  • We have two MG5's, but the older pre-facelift models. They've been ace, saved us money on tyres, maintenance and are 1/4 of the price of an equivalent fossil fuel car to run. So we've bought another, but the facelift model, and we're hoping it's as good as the others.

I’ve had a updated MG5 LR luxury in France since September - it was James’s reviews and work videos that gave me the confidence to get it! It’s doing great - very practical for visits to DIY stores or IKEA. The MG forums showed me how to reduce the volume of the indicator clicks, which was my only annoyance - the dealer didn’t know how to!

Salut! I am also in France, equidistant from Poitiers and Angouleme. What was you buying experience with the concessionaire? A friend of mine who owns a 2017 Ioniq said he saw an MG dealership being built in Poitiers last year when he had his car in for service.

@@kiae-nirodiariesencore4270 Hello! The MG concession is part of a garage group (Courtois) that also sells Peugeot and Kia in the same place. I had a good relationship with the sales person. As the car only needs an inspection every year or 24k km I haven’t needed to return yet, but as it part of a larger group I hope it will be ok…

@@Jamesandkatesame on my side from Germany. I bought as well a MG5 after seeing the review of your older Model. BUT: For me, the new design of the Tachometer is really bad. The position of an arrow is easier to see out of the corner of the eye. Also the cost of running app and background cloud services comes into it. I also agree about the tyres and efficacy so will look forward to any tests you carry out. Also I would be interested in any SE owners efficiency results. Thanks again for the content.

Now we have a whole new generation of cars that force you to use a touchscreen even for essential functions like ventilation and airco. The safety aspect of being forced to use a touchscreen for everything is not to be underestimated. I really hope that the manufacturers come to their senses about this.

I'm Glad you said Cheapish. They could be much cheaper but it's the Old Whatever the market can bear or is use to. An older Example Dyson Vacs went to China and not one cent was dropped off their price. A more recent Car example in Australia was the BYD Atto 3. I've imported Cars from Japan so well aware of Taxes, Exchange Rates and Regulation Compliance. Currently it's around $10,000 AUD to import/ship/and a Profit for Services. You could buy an Atto 3 in China for $28,000 AUD so a $38,000 Car less if you importing in Bulk so could be a $40,000 Car. But what we got was a $44,000 starting price to match the market gouging..sorry pricing by the MG ZS EV. And then Miraculously it has gone up again by $3,000 coincidentally NSW (our Largest Population State) offered a $3,000 rebate for all new EV's under a price I think was $60,000.

Have got the 5 Trophy in Hampstead Grey ( moving from Ioniq Hybrid) absolutely love it,looks premium and perhaps one other thing to mention it sits high on its wheels which enhances its presence. Agree about range issue, had to do a 90 mile airport pick up and thought on a cold December day 170 mile available would do the first half easily. Had to stop at services 2/3 way there. First charge points occupied and round the way at BP garage the others were being upgraded so torn out. Then hunted around Manchester airport perimeter for available chargers, leaving my family waiting for an hour an a half at the airport. A bit of a mare to say the least. However return journey much better. Getting used to charge drop and managing/ planning a journey. Back in love with the car.

Love the review style - - not preachy or punchy, or trying to be cool, just a great relaxed informative watch. Having now sat in the new 4, facelift 5 and facelift ZS ( trying to see which car I will buy or lease when my current motability lease runs out) the big concern for me is definitely that console. I actually find that although the 5 should be better than the 4 from a wheelchair user point of view the console issue is potentially the decider as there is such a big danger of me trashing it when passing the folded chair across my lap and stowing it on the front passenger seat.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  Год назад +1

Ah man, I see the issue. Is there something you could use to protect it just in case that happens? Maybe some kind of hard plastic container that in the event of contact, it will take the flack, not the screen???

      @thelaserhive3368 Год назад

@@Jamesandkate Possibly, but such a pain to have to temporarily protect stuff every single time that I get in and out of the car. Imagine doing this in the pouring Yorkshire rain while an impatient dog is barking at you from the rear…..the incorporation of ever bigger more prominent screens and huge centre consoles is in danger of becoming a very big issue for independent wheelchair users.

I’ve spent the last five weeks using a new pre-facelift base model MG5 (covering over 1,300 miles) as I was doing some research for Motability on the accessibility of the public infrastructure.
Overall I was very impressed with the pre-facelift MG5 although the boot was too small to fit my wheelchair and a pushchair in easily. Charging at the front was a big bonus for me access wise.
The newer facelift model looks like a good improvement but I’m also not keen on the bigger centre consul and moving the climate control into the screen; I prefer physical controls so you don’t have to take your eyes off of the road.
    Thanks, Ian :)

Good to hear that Motability are showing serious interest in EV's. That will be a real plus for users with limited mobility, which will save them money whilst reducing the negative effects of exhaust fumes on health. I don't qualify for the scheme, but do have a good friend who depends upon Motability, and who really dislikes having to travel in the back of a Diesel-powered van which will take her wheelchair and ramp.

Electric vehicle charge point target is ‘20 years behind schedule’
There is now one for every 30 EVs compared with 16 at the start of 2020
Fewer than 9,000 public electric vehicle charging devices were installed in the UK last year.
    Ben Clatworthy

    Wednesday January 25 2023, 7.45pm, The Times
Ministers are set to miss their target of installing 300,000 new electric car chargers by 2030 by 20 years, opposition leaders have claimed.
Labour accused the government of being “asleep at the wheel” after it was revealed that fewer than 9,000 public electric vehicle charging devices were installed in the UK last year.
There are now 30 electric vehicles for every charge point, compared with 16 at the start of 2020, according to Times analysis, fuelling fears that infrastructure is failing to keep up with demand.

Not to mention all of that extra gear it is pulling as your mobile EV workshop.
The early savings gained on the first MG5 over using a ICE to do your job, must have gone a LONG way in funding the new MG5.

I was a fan of the previous MG5 as unpretentious transport and a value for money offering. To me, the changes do not warrant the additional cost (though the previous Gen car had it’s pricing set at a time where all cars were lower cost), especially given the apparent drop in efficiency. It’s still a great offering, but it feels like that money has been spent trying to lift the car into a segment where it’s competition is much more polished. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Excellent review from 2 experienced MG 5 owners, I really think it is so valuable how your 2 views complement each other! It will be interesting to see how the MG 5 is performing as a van in the future, please compare it also with the e-EV200, it will be nice to get some idea about the difference in consumption. And I'd be even more grateful if you could do a review on the new MG 4, a car I am seriously considering myself:) I could be wrong but I think it will be the breakthrough car for MG and will be selling in very large numbers in 2023.

    Interesting stuff. Thanks.
I am surprised that they haven't looked at a bigger battery option (or at least I haven't seen anything about this) but other than that centre console the only thing I would change is the price. Just too much in my opinion.
Seven grand equates to over 30% increase if my mental maths is correct which even in the current climate is a bit excessive. Whatever happened to manufacturers managing to freeze or even reduce the price on a revision model of a car?

I have ordered my new mg zs and will most likely get it in a week or two. In the meanwhile I have the new mg 5 and I agree it is not as efficient I am driving it with the 16” stud tires as I live in Sweden with snow and ice.

12:06 Is the max charging speed the same on the new and old model? What did you mean the charging speed has been reduced? Compared with the old MG5? Or they've downgraded the new MG5 because of some charging issues? Or something else?

Hi. They’ve reduced the charge speed from 100kWs to 80kWs but it will charge at 80 for longer. They’ve basically worked out that at a slightly slower speed it charges quicker and is better for the battery 👍🏻

Thanks for your pacey review. I' m driving the new Trophy and am loving most of it. Could be betters - heated steering wheel; app needs persistence despite 2 x Dec upgrades; lots of driver assist features, but lacks the blind spot alert when reversing out of your suoermarket parking slot; defaults to Comfort mode and I want Eco most of the time; rear view camera is mounted on a stalk and catches the dirt; driver's electic seat needs a memory as kike you guys my wife and I need different settings; floating console helps me lose stuff. Upgrade is sharp, but £7k more is pushing it. Thanks!

Thank you for this review. Looks like a good value estate car. Only thing that puts me off is the lack of a heated steering wheel. I have checked the specs again, as i thought the updated version would include it, like the MG4 does. Can you confirm if it does not have this still?
I know you can wear gloves, but if you have poor circulation you really need a heated steering wheel, it is essential really.
Which is a shame as the bigger space of MG5 would be better than me. But if no heated steering wheel id have to go for the MG4. Thank you.

Hi you two, my name is Les from Wigan I’m a member of the podcast crew on the MGEVs forum podcast you may have seen, and I too have come from a MG5 SR 50kw which I had for around 20 months and it was brilliant 18500 miles averaged 4.4 mpkh over that time with no problems totally great car it was.
But I now have the new facelift 5 trophy model and I have to say not as happy with this as my old car the efficiency the handling and the steering is awful in comparison and only feels somewhere about right in the sport mode which I don’t use because the efficiency is not good to kick off with.
My old 5 felt far more planted on the road than this new one.
I have watch all your videos over the years now and always enjoy them now in this currant one James you say you may try replacing the wheels for the smaller 16 inch ones which I thing the face lifted SE comes with and of course all the older models only had 16 inch wheels fitted, so I was wondering if you did try this and what the difference was ? as I have a feeling this is why I feel the handling and steering feel so poor on this trophy model.
I remember a short while ago on your first 5 at around 41000 miles you had a wheel off it and commented about the total lack of wear on the brakes even at that mileage, I bet James you won’t got that mileage on this new one because of the MG pilot systems using the brakes to slow the car drives me mad that MG Pilot not a fan at all, please give me plain simple cruise control as my old car had and let the driver control the slowing down.
So as you can tell not really that impressed and feel like I have wasted a fair lump of extra money for nothing really to be honest apart from much better lights and the app Ismart great on a cold morning feel like I’ve made a big mistake.
Keep up the great work and videos.
    Les

Great review, thanks. I am looking for an electric estate car. However, the one thing that puts me off the MG5 is the high lip at the rear. It makes it difficult for my dogs to jump in. If they were to change that (and the centre console!), I would go for the MG5 in a shot. As it is, the Skoda Enyaq looks better (for the dogs) though somewhat more expensive.

    Justifying £7k increase..totally disagree.
Missed opportunity to sort many things out.
Controls buried in screens..People always make the mistake of saying 'you get used to it'. Yes you do but it's still a driver distraction, slower and not intuitive compared to a control which 'falls to hand' without having to take your eyes off the road multiple times.
The rear headrests still block the rear window.
Designing the perfect car is possible, unless you un-learn what has been learnt over many decades.
Cars like the MG5 should be hard to criticise, but you've proved it's easy, so people inside MG have failed.
It's almost as if being trendy has priority over practicality, common sense and safety.
