MG Krill Sifter - they really missed a trick with that name! Great review but why oh why do you have to have pimp tints on so many cars these days if you don't want poverty spec. My kids aren't that ugly...... and an EV without heated seats in the base model - madness.
As far as the heated seats are concerned; not everybody really wants them, or lives in a cold country. I've had several cars with them, but never, ever used them (but I live in Spain). I was also in the uk recently, my hire car had them... but I still didn't use them. And they are an added cost that quite a few really don't need.
@@davidcolin6519 I have heated seats in my old Jaaaag - and I do use them, from time to time (well, the one I'm sat in anyway!) and they're great, except when you really REALLY want them is the instant you jump into your cold car on a cold frosty morning and everything's freezing cold.... they take so long to warm up, that the heater is already working by then. Actually, one of the things that's really got me keen to go electric (other than the cost of running aforementioned Jaaag), is the idea I can use an app to pre-warm & defrost the car while I'm having a nice cup of coffee in the morning...
My point is that they are important on EVs with their inefficient heaters. Even on a much more upmarket IONIQ 5 a heat pump is a £1k extra. I never use them in ICE cars.

I have a neighbour, that will never buy a MG Because it's made in China.. but? He drives a Tesla Y, made in China, and uses a iPhone, made in China.. so many people are uneducated...
Surely, you are inteligent enough to identify the difference between supporting the r and d of Western economies vs that of a tyrannical regime we are in a cold/warm war with? The difference is VAST and is the difference between your loved ones having a future or not. China are entirely hostile to western freedoms and want to see them eradicated. If you have any kind of job in the West buying Chinese designed and engineered products will affect your future and diminish it. It will trickle down to you.
@@craigo2656 that sounds a bit try hardy to justify. You can cope, but that level of hypocrisy is quite funny. Look, it's ok to drive an MG here because after all you are paying VAT to HMRC, paying for the electricity in the UK (it's fine, just EDF, your fellow white European brethen takes a cut...) , Driving on British roads, doing British things. This makes a much sense as what you just tried.
Tesla fans deny that Tesla has been given billions of dollars US, in subsidies. Instead trying to claim Elon built Tesla from scratch. He didn't, and he's not even it's founder. 🤣 ...Also, Tesla cars are of wonky design, and Tesla has a poor QC. It's only a matter of time, before Tesla just isn't the "leader" any longer.
Hi Jonny - thanks for the review - I was especially interested since I bought an ex-demo MG5 in September 2021 - it was originally registered in March of that year. My previous vehicle was a 2004 Range Rover Vogue with an LPG conversion - I'd never have been able to afford to run it without that!! I have been thrilled to bits with the MG - never get out of Eco mode and use max Kers and in the summer was getting on average 4.6 miles per kWh. Since I'm retired my annual mileage is around 7000 and although I had a home charger fitted I hardly ever use it - the 'granny' charger that came with the car is adequate - I have 'economy 7' so only charge it overnight (00:20 - 07:20) and that adds about 20% to the battery charge. The boot capacity makes fitting my wife's mobility scooter easy with room to spare. The heating and ventilation is the best that I've had on any vehicle - it's warm straight away without having to wait for a petrol/diesel engine to warm up on winter days and window demisting is superb. The ease of driving makes going on journeys a joy and sitting in traffic jams makes one a bit smug since you're not wasting fuel!!

A lot of owners of the old MG5 used the under-bonnet space for cable storage etc - they simply bought a plastic 'storage' box that fitted neatly in to the space - as with James' (from James & Kate) MG5 Service Vehicle.
I'm with you, Jonny, we need many more EV estates / sportbacks / fast dog wagons! Not more SUVs. I love lowered performance estates, like my old VR4, just want a modern low maintenance version with variable suspension height that the dogs will be happy with. Great review, I think the facelift really works better than the original, which to be fair wasn’t bad. The fact that MGs EVs haven’t taken a wacky styling approach and by not calling it Coffee or Cat or something similar can only widen its appeal to current ICE owners.
That Dark Crystal lady was upset she hadn't waited til the MG5 Estate came out and is now stuck with the Kia until her lease runs out. You'd have that face too.

Ah, that answers the question both my husband and I have asked ourselves. There's an MG5 parked near our home, where we would often walk our dog. I love estate cars. Hoping to be able to pick up a used MG5 at some point now the new one is out. Shame it only has 500kg towing, would be good if it could tow 1000-1500kg one day.
@@Mardy72 My current car is 110kW and it has a towing capacity of 2000kg. But that is not my point. My point is that it would be nice if the MG5 was developed to be able to tow 1500kg one day. Also it would be really cool if cars were developed to be really good at carrying cargo and pulling trailers in much the same way as they are developed for quick 0-60 times and 150+ mph speeds. Neither of those 'performance improvements' are as useful as the car being able to do some real work with passengers and cargo.
@@Maker_of_Things may I ask what vehicle you drive, Alfred? I have a Subaru Outback, and even with the 180kw EZ30R it's only rated to tow 1800kg braked. I agree tho, towing and weight capacity are important. I regularly tow my boat and camper trailer. The Subaru flat six does this with ease (although likes a good drink when it's towing) With that said, I'm not sure what EV I could upgrade to that would match this towing performance. A Rivian would probably be the only decent choice... albeit an expensive one.
@@Mardy72 I am currently driving a Skoda Octavia Scout 2.0TDI. I think a lot of the towing capacity if down to the tow car weight and its ability to break the trailer load, and restart it on differing inclines. Mine is good for 2000kg on 12% and 8% inclines where as the 1.6 TDI, with only 81kW, can only offer 1700kg on 12% and 2000kg on 8%.
Brilliant, thanks Jonny and TLBS gang another great episode. Cracking honest car, let's hope the MG5 makes more of the manufacturers realise there's more to EV driving than SUV's and bats#!t quick sporty numbers. Come on Ford, Skoda, Volvo etc, be brave...😄
i really want this car to do well, i love estates and just have no desire for an SUV, but when you have a dog and a kid you need the space and practicality. there was the old model parked down our road for quite a time and it wasnt worth a second look visually, where as this is at least nice to look at... I was really encouraged driving in Germany this summer that there were lots of estates, noticeably more than anywhere else in Europe so i hope that the success of this will convince the likes of merc, bmw, and vag to put more into a nice looking practical estate, especially as an EV.

One HUGE gripe is that the passenger seat does NOT adjust up or down and it's set very high up, so much so that even shorter people feel like they're rubbing on the ceiling, it's a very strange choice and a complete deal breaker for me when I tried this car.

I seriously considered one of these last year (old model of course) to replace our Dacia Logan Stepway (great cheap car). However several things put me off at the time: 1. Could not confirm if the roof rails can be used for top boxes (essential). 2. Could not confirm a Towbar can be fitted for bike-carrying (not towing). 3. It’s a bit small compared to the Dacia - boot isn’t that big for an estate really. It did drive well though - plenty of performance. Not sure if any of the above have been addressed in the new model but open to persuasion!

Thanks for this review, good to see the changes in the facelift version! We've had our MG5 "MK 1" for over six months now. We've regularly achieved 4.1miles per kWh on our monthly 200 mile motorway drive in summer temperatures, which I think is brilliant; I expect winter temperatures will reduce the efficiency by 10 to 15%, but still a very usable range and the soft ride makes it very comfortable for long journeys. Definitely the best value family EV

I’ve had a 2011 Mazda 6 Sport estate for nearly 7 years and I adore it. For 5 of those years it’s had a Thule top box on it. The rear seats are permanently folded flat (properly flat as well) and we have a double bed (two single Vango self inflating mattresses, sleeping bags and duvet) which we can lay totally flat out on with space to spare. Loads of space for us both and our border collie for a quick bolt up to the Lakes, Peaks, Snowdonia, Highlands. I had an RB5 Impreza for many years, and so much fun when the time was right, but the Mazda offers so much more, more of the time. It’s changed my perception of what a car can be. I don’t care about the status, I don’t care about the badge. I’ve got to get rid of it within the next couple of years to keep my car allowance, and I’m struggling to see what I’d replace it with. The MG is so close to being perfect. Similar size, virtually the same performance….but the rear seats don’t fold totally flat. And that’s a big deal for estate owners.
I have to admit, MG are really making strides. We have a 2021 Honda CRV Hybrid, and you have to remember back in the 60’s and 70’s Japanese cars had the same stigma that Chinese cars are shaking off right now, the only difference is in fact the majority of the components in my Japanese CRV are also made in china too😂

In my mind it is not really an estate unless you can easily get a six-foot fridge-freezer in the back. That looks near impossible on this MG (and a lot of other modern cars). This is why I am still driving a 30 year old Volvo, that I've owned from new.
You shouldn’t put dogs in the boot. If you get smashed in the boot with a dog in the back, it’s dead 💀 as the boot space is a crumple zone?! What is with all these EVs that have a huge hood like a car with a big v8 up front but when you open it up there's no storage in there. So dumb. Either design the car like a mid-engine / rear-engine sports car or give us 100L of secure storage up front since all you make is SUVs/crossovers/hatchbacks that make you carry everything in the cabin under glass.

Boot lip = hatchback. Sorry, not an estate. Crying shame for the want of $5 of plastic moulding to make it flat and swap some boot space for under boot space. Utterly ruins its potential for hauling heavy loads if you have to haul them over a lip IMO
"...just way the world is..." Nope. Sorry. The reason your iPhone or TV or toaster is made in China is because we as consumers don't have any choices anymore. I do prefer this face-lift. Looks at lot less cheap and chintzy than the original. I still can't get over the under-wheeled look of them though. Same with the MG4. I know this segment is all about practicality but I wouldn't want to spend over 30K on a new car and have it looking like it's riding on Sunday market stall wheel trims. Fit 18s, lower it 40mm or so, spot on. If only someone at MG was enthusiastic about the old Zed car days!
I’ve had the original MG5 for 2 years, it’s a dog carrier and brilliant for what it does. In my opinion the best value EV out there. It’s not perfect and im sure this new one will be better but I love mine
Prefer the look of the old model. Not everyone wants a sporty looking car. The old model looked more fit to purpose... Really love everything else about it. Can't wait for them to be available in Portugal with a good dealer network.
I have a Chinese phone. I don't trust it. It is watching everything I do. It is listening to everything I say. I can't imagine what it would do if I bought a Chinese car and they both ganged up.
All phones do that. If you think an IPhone or Samsung doesn't then you're in for a shock. Have a conversation about something with friends, and the very next advert you see on your phone will be related to that conversation. It's called AI, and it's everywhere.

As someone who drives a MK7 Golf estate, I never understood why VW never made an estate e-Golf or at least a PHEV. At least Peugeot will make the e-308 in estate, too, for which I'm super excited.
Well it's an MG by name only and TBH I do not want a car that's made in China, in fact I go out of my way not to buy things which come from China although that's becoming increasingly difficult and don't get me started on the old iPhone argument because it's not as though they are cheap.... A survey was undertaken in the states and they asked end users if they would buy an iPhone made in America even if it were $200 more expensive and guess what, many said they would prefer that and would be willing to pay the extra. We consumers don't get a choice and some of us aren't looking for cheap. These guys are turning out vehicles like sweets so even with a 7 year warranty you try finding spares for these cars in a few years time. If you have no conscience and you don't care about any kind of loyalty then go ahead and buy it. It may as you say be "the way of the world" but there will never be one of those on my drive.
What the survey asked people bombarded with anti-Chinese propaganda if they had a negative view of a country they had been indoctrinated to hate?, how very surprising.

Sorry, but the comparison with Volvo was a bad one. Polestar would be a better comparison. Volvo is designed and engineered in Europe and built in Europe by workers getting Belgian and Swedish salaries. Only the S90 sedan is being built in China and shipped. In addition, add the CO2 footprint of shipping cars from China...
@@TheLateBrakeShow but then he should have said Geely group and not Volvo. Volvo only has Polestar, Lotus has nothing to do with Volvo. The point is that he compares apples with pears... Even if Apple phones are made in China, the profit goes to an American company, a Volvo made in Europe is Europe/China, you buy a Nissan Quasqai, UK workers build them even if it is a Japanese company but MG is China/China. So when people say they don't want to by Chinese, then that is a fully valid argument. Also buying a car is a completely different investment then an iPhone...

I was very keen on the mg5 after i watched your review. However why are you not exposing the 7 year warranty with all the exemptions and the rate of deprecation with in the 1st year. ?
@@theelectricmonk3909 I can see that. My point really was that not everybody considers them such an important factor.
My point is that they are important on EVs with their inefficient heaters. Even on a much more upmarket IONIQ 5 a heat pump is a £1k extra. I never use them in ICE cars.
Yes, heated seats is important in an EV.
This is the direction I have been waiting for EVs to go in. Sensible, practical, no excessive frills.

I have a neighbour, that will never buy a MG Because it's made in China.. but? He drives a Tesla Y, made in China, and uses a iPhone, made in China.. so many people are uneducated...
When is he telling you about his Chinese wife too. 😂.
The iPhone is not made in China it’s assembled… it’s a different thing

The seats not folding flat is a deal-breaker... (Did you try to grab between the seat back and "seat" portion? Sometimes it's hidden). Also by raising the back seat they could have had great leg support and flat entry boot since they have lots of headroom

I love estate cars. Hoping to be able to pick up a used MG5 at some point now the new one is out.
Shame it only has 500kg towing, would be good if it could tow 1000-1500kg one day.
Totally, totally agree 👍🏻
115kw would struggle to tow 1500kg
The Subaru flat six does this with ease (although likes a good drink when it's towing)
With that said, I'm not sure what EV I could upgrade to that would match this towing performance.
Cracking honest car, let's hope the MG5 makes more of the manufacturers realise there's more to EV driving than SUV's and bats#!t quick sporty numbers.

i really want this car to do well, i love estates and just have no desire for an SUV, but when you have a dog and a kid you need the space and practicality. there was the old model parked down our road for quite a time and it wasnt worth a second look visually, where as this is at least nice to look at... I was really encouraged driving in Germany this summer that there were lots of estates, noticeably more than anywhere else in Europe so i hope that the success of this will convince the likes of merc, bmw, and vag to put more into a nice looking practical estate, especially as an EV.

I've got a Skoda Octavia estate, and it looks like the closest EV to that car - unpretentious, practical, sensible, spacious. Really wish there was more choice in this space, but I'm very happy this exists. Thanks for the great review (as usual) - keeping it real.
Unfortunately the boot is smaller than the Octavia (although the data in this video suggests bigger than I've seen elsewhere)
One HUGE gripe is that the passenger seat does NOT adjust up or down and it's set very high up, so much so that even shorter people feel like they're rubbing on the ceiling, it's a very strange choice and a complete deal breaker for me when I tried this car.

people seem to have a thing for 0 - 60 times, about 4 or 5 seconds is plenty. range is more important.
I seriously considered one of these last year (old model of course) to replace our Dacia Logan Stepway (great cheap car). However several things put me off at the time:

For me the only let down is the size of the rear door, ideally it should have been much larger, giving a flat floor entry and maximum width at the sides! The Volvo 200 series had it perfectly sized! as did the original Subaru forester and Legacy(Outback)!
I love that it's an EV estate car, but I probably still prefer the look of the MG4.
But if I were to own an MG4 I'd *definitely* take off those huge badges and put on the ones for this model.
MG as a brand are great. I can't help but wonder what you would make of the MG3, as it's one of the cheapest cars on sale. Dad bought his Hello Yellow Excite brand new in March this year, and we all absolutely love the thing.
I am always wondering why MG doesn't convert the MG3 to be an electric car. It will make a perfect city EV.
Keep supporting the CCP brands, akin to Germany buying Russian gas. It wont end well
@@dt8101 I think they have plans to launch an electric replacement

Thanks for another good review. Ref your comment on people not buying a car made in China, it would be great to understand if MG factory carbon neutral and if recycled materials are used? What about carbon footprint on shipping car to UK? I have just ordered a Megane etech over a MG4 for these reasons. Head says MG4 but heart is my comfortable with Megane. Cheaper is not always the full picture.
Don't eat, don't live. Too many produces are from out side the UK.

Fantastic review. Thanks Jonny.
In my mind it is not really an estate unless you can easily get a six-foot fridge-freezer in the back. That looks near impossible on this MG (and a lot of other modern cars). This is why I am still driving a 30 year old Volvo, that I've owned from new.
Yay. I want one of these for family use. SUVs suck and I never want to buy one!
You shouldn’t put dogs in the boot. If you get smashed in the boot with a dog in the back, it’s dead 💀 as the boot space is a crumple zone?! Love the MG5, but liked the ZS more, however, I have just cancelled my order, as I was advised the car I ordered in March ‘22 hadn’t even been build 🤷🏻♂️ So, I have ordered an MG4 Trophy LR instead 👍🏻 That is due end on Jan ‘23 or beginning of Feb ‘23 🤞🏻
There seems to be an increase in self-righteous dog vigilantes telling us how we should or shouldn't care for our dogs. I'll unapologetically put my dogs in the boot until the end of time, crumple zone or not.

I'd totaly daily that. I'd need to treat it to some lowering springs and some nicer wheels though. I'd much rather have that than an SUV. Nice review as always Jonny.

Great video, loved the pink nails when you were demonstrating the app (22.19 if you want to check them out). I am sure you will say it's B roll OTSOT's. Must be hard change the spark plugs on your VW with nails like those.

It might be a fine car however I'm not buying Chineese from an ehtical standpoint. A car is probably the second most expensive purchase you make not like a phone.
Car manufacturers do that. The frunk just needs to store the cables. Else when you load the back up the cables cannot be under the floor in the rear.
Another brilliantly paced review, always honest and entertaining. Genuinely interested in this car now, as looks well, and would suit the 2 dog family 😁
Estate car fan here. Currently I'm running a Skoda Superb estate (great car). My wife has a Skoda Karoq which she feels is too big for what she needs now. We want to get an EV next year but which of the current cars do we let go? Originally I thought about getting a small hatch EV for my wife (MG4 or smaller used E208 etc). However, I'm now wondering if I could forgo a bit of space & consider the MG5 instead of my Superb? Decisions decisions. Great review as always Jonny.
i actually love the mg5 from when was first lauched. and this new mg5 i like it even more. mg are getting a good reputation for ev vehicles and its not hard to see why practical affordable with decent range and specs to there vehicles. if i could charge up at home which i cant mg ev would be my choice great videos

They have done a fantastic job with this facelift, I could use one and it would be a good replacement for my Stilo Jtd but I can't afford one.
MG5 is a good effort out the gate but when is the Volvo V70 / or equivalent electric version coming out.
I'm sorry all other estates are pretenders to the throne and Geely are really missing a trick. Context, V70 flat load area enough room for 2 washing machines (just).
the front looks like KIA EV6.

Had a go in mg zs ev when they were first launched. I was really impressed by it except the info screen. It was glitchy as hell and wasn't the best looking thing. However that info screen looks and operates far better
Boot lip = hatchback. Sorry, not an estate. Crying shame for the want of $5 of plastic moulding to make it flat and swap some boot space for under boot space. Utterly ruins its potential for hauling heavy loads if you have to haul them over a lip IMO
Thank you Mao's Garage.
"...just way the world is..." Nope. Sorry. The reason your iPhone or TV or toaster is made in China is because we as consumers don't have any choices anymore. Essentially all of those devices are made in China. With cars we still have a choice, and I'll be damned if I buy an MG, Volvo or any other Chinese brand car.
You are good at your job John great review and in-depth. I personally think that MG’s are very upcoming they’re looking better and better if I had the money though I still wouldn’t buy a new car. I’m curious how it gets on in the second hand market could be a bargain. Bless you and keep up the good work.
Great vid Johnny! Don't know why MG didn't flat-floor the tailgate??? Good conclusion too - Can you imagine how good a Tesla Model 3 station wagon would look? (Can you hear me Elon?).
First thing I said about the Model 3 was that they ought to not bother with the Y and just make a 3-SW

That barely deserves the name estate. No flat entry, seats don’t fold flat, what’s the point? It’s just got a bit more space than a hatchback.
Hear, hear to more estate cars. So much more practical and better looking than SUVs. I hope the masses will come to realise this sooner rather than later.
Estate, meh. Give me a proper MPV. Not your fake Range rover wannabies, not a van with extra seats, but a real honest to goodness MPV like a Zafira or a Grand Scenic. Why are there no electric MPVs?!
Amen to that.

Funny how we think 0-60 in 7.7 seconds is 'OK' now. That used to be very hot-hatch/supercar territory.
Yep - It's completely ridiculous, unnecessary, largely unusable - and frankly, dangerous in the hands of some drivers... !!

😆 🤣
All phones do that. If you think an IPhone or Samsung doesn't then you're in for a shock.

MG are doing great things to drive EV costs down and real-world driving ranges up. MG 4 & 5 are really stirring up my interest in EV's. I even like the very distracting luminous lime green "look at me" trainers. Proper bobby dazzlers! 😁😁
going through all the settings whilst driving.. don't.
We are simply reflecting what drivers are doing in the real world. Is it progress? No. Is it the new normal? Yes.

KIA EV6 is classified as a Wagon in the USA. "SMALL STATION WAGONS range from 25 to 120 MPGe." on EPA DOT Sticker.
The old black car at the start is better than the MG.
As someone who drives a MK7 Golf estate, I never understood why VW never made an estate e-Golf or at least a PHEV.
At least Peugeot will make the e-308 in estate, too, for which I'm super excited.
I think part of the original eGolf brief was to test customer reaction, and it was perhaps deemed unnecessary to produce an estate version...
@@Brian-om2hh yeah, probably.
And we didn't get a GTE estate because of the Passat GTE.

I think he was referring to Volvo Group cars - so Polestar, Lotus etc
@@TheLateBrakeShow but then he should have said Geely group and not Volvo. Volvo only has Polestar, Lotus has nothing to do with Volvo. The point is that he compares apples with pears... Even if Apple phones are made in China, the profit goes to an American company, a Volvo made in Europe is Europe/China, you buy a Nissan Quasqai, UK workers build them even if it is a Japanese company but MG is China/China. So when people say they don't want to by Chinese, then that is a fully valid argument. Also buying a car is a completely different investment then an iPhone...
Johnny is one of the best car reviewer but love to see him and Rory together for amazing mashup challenge what do you say? @thelatebreakshow 😅
I think you’re confusing this channel with Jonny’s other (imaginary) channel, The Plate Break show, in which he reviews boisterous Greek restaurants where they consume unusually large quantities of crockery.
