The next vesion is due for launch in October. Only mention Acceleration 3.4s - 0-50 km/h, and Performance 135kW / 280Nm Nothing about 0-100 km/h or 0-60 mph But the next version has more range, and I expect more battery weight to slow down acceleration.
@@thorbjrnhellehaven5766 yes, i believe they have stated that it has been set up with far lower performance to get slightly better range...bit naughty...we need same performance and another 100 real miles of range to make this into a holidaying tourer in the good old tradition of a Brit Estate car
@@davidstuart4915 I believe the new MG5 has acceptable performance, but what I would like to see is an added second motor for AWD. Maybe just 10-20% of the main motor. Not to add signicicant power for acceleration, but to add more traction on ice/snow. Just adding some traction to the second axle, if the primary axle starts to spin can be just the little extra nedded to not stop, but get up a hill after snowfall or an icestorm.
@@davidstuart4915 but then some people prefere a lower station wagon for daily commute rather than an SUV, but still wants AWD, not for terain but just for better traction during winter.. There is still no AWD option for electric station wagon. Only 2WD or SUV. I think it would make sense to have the option. My parentes have had AWD Passat/Golf station wagon for decades for convenience during winter, not to go off road. 2WD is a definitive deal breaker to them. Then the Marvel R is a higher price range making the argument harder.
Got one, can’t fault it and it does what it says on the tin and definitely exceed expectations for I am paying for it. Does it fill me with excitement: no, but it doesn’t drain my wallet either.... it does the job and does it very well. No tax, cheap servicing, and best of all no need to visit petrol station.
According to my MG dealer servicing after the first year will cost me £99.00 GDP & £199.00 GDP the year after, then repeat costs for third & fourth years respectively. I'm finding that the MG5 is a real long legged car, but like all cars EV or ice the harder you drive them the more power or fuel use, on a recent cross country trip I was averaging 240 miles per charge.
@@stevezodiac491 I have the standard exclusive model not the long range, my wife & I had to visit the dealer approximately 120 miles away, we went the country route entailing twisty roads & steep hills up and down, we started with 100% & arrived with 50%, by my rough reckoning if I can get 120 miles from 50% then under good conditions 240 miles could be feasible. I tend to use eco mode & kers 3, not quite one pedal driving but pretty close.
It's not cheap....it is what supposed to be the price for an EV.........Other manufactures need to bring their EV prices down in line with reality.......
Decided to buy the MG5 as a first EV as it was practical and at this price I could convince my wife that electric was a good idea without the financial risk of more expensive cars.
Great review, lads. Thanks! I've always driven an estate and this is the only EV estate on the market - and it's one of the cheapest EVs on the market! What's not to like?
Just bought the upgraded long range version. The roof bar, boot, battery and new safety pilot tech has made this even better. And car looks better in person I think
Three months on & I still love this big car, even in eco mode & kers 3 putting pedal to the metal it goes from zero to 60 in 7.3 seconds, it leaves ice cars in its dust, its comfortable on all types of journeys, my go to garage thought it was a Passat!! It charges from 20% to 80% in 4.5 hours with a 7.2 wallbox or 40 minutes on CCS where we live CCS is free? All hail the MG5 long may it reign.
I had a test drive in the ZS Ev with my parents and it was very good. To all those badge snobs out there: Why don't you keep an open mind for once. You might just surprise yourself.
I had one of these for a day while my ZS EV was in for a service, thought it was definitely a step up from the ZS in ride, handling, range and having a battery % display.
As somebody who part exchanged a Golf R estate for an MG5 just a week ago, I do not regret the decision at all. I wanted to go electric, couldn’t afford a Tesla and needed something family sized that also wasn’t an SUV. Build quality is fine so far but we’ll see how it fairs over the coming years. VW build quality ain’t all that either as I discovered in the last 12 months so I have realistic expectations.
I don't really agree with saying that it looks very 90s :D more like 2008ish which is a good thing! If I were in the market for a new car, I would strongly consider this car. It does everything what you need from an average car- quite spacious, efficient and has basic equipment which makes your life comfy
Great review because this is an EV I can see myself buying - especially as, if I climb the tree in my back garden, I can see the Warrington dealership - 5 mins walk away. They are selling a lot of MGs that's for sure. I agree with the VW Passat likeness mentioned by Chris below. It was the first car that came into my head.
Looks like a passat to me. One thing I've seen with mg is they are bringing out cars but there does not seem to be an ongoing theme like with other manufacturers.
I've just taken delivery of a 2021 MG zs ev and sod the snobbery it's a good car. Comfortable, every toy you could want and this will upset some people....its a damn sight better than the 18 plate ford I traded in and 5star ncap too.

Test drove the Exclusiv in Dec 2020 - re: appearance - Front :I thought 2016 VW Passat; Side: New shape Astra; Rear: Ford Focus. but the wheels look too small - another inch and they'd look OK. Re Nissan Leaf - the MG5 has battery temp management so there's a one up already. And the SEVEN year warranty!! I'd buy this over anything French any day.
Now that your channel has grown and the number of views your reviews get is high, I think you carry a responsibility to give honest reviews and cater to people with less money to spend on EVs. I wasn't expecting you to do this with this review but you certainly did 👍 It's not a car I'd ever want but if EVs are going to take over sooner rather than later people need to be encouraged to go and buy. Great review.
Great honest review guys. I replaced my 2014 Leaf with an MG5 a month ago. It's a great car and is unbelievable value for money. I have a 50 mile round trip daily commute and with the Leaf I used to charge it every night but with the MG it's now every third night. The display that shows the miles remaining is much more accurate than the Leaf. I am confident that driving it normally in Eco with maximum KERS I will get 180 miles range. The maximum KERS is like the e Pedal on the newer Leafs and is almost one pedal driving. You hardly have to use the brakes. My car is identical to the one in this review. It looks good in the Westminster Silver colour but that's my personal choice.
Thanks for doing this review, there aren't enough around yet. I love my MG5. You do make it look massive in the video some how, it took me a while to get used to dropping into a car rather than climbing into an SUV.
Comment about MG Dealers. Before buying ours we spoke to three dealers, two were classic hard sell on the extras and just wanted to close the deal ASAP and make as much money for themselves with as little effort on their part. However we found Ellie at Thompson First in Stroud absolutely amazing, not pushy and happy to answer any questions and talk things through. If you are around this way then go with her!
Totally agree with you, Luscombes in Leeds, and Chorley Motors in Burnley. I was treated as a buyer and not being sold to, and they understood the car and had experts to answer more complicated questions.
Love my ZSEV which has proved to be a great ownership experience (I have some good dealers near me). I can see the MG5, with it’s longer range, being even better for some people - including taxi drivers. The last I heard the roof rails were rated at 35kg but maybe someone could confirm that.
This car is a no brainier for me, not tax, no road permit, no ulez, no congestion, free fuel ( through solar panels), total anonymity when driving, all for £22k bargain well done mg just needs a panaramic sunroof, better roof bars and rear seat tables and it would be perfect.
Using one as a Taxi since 2nd week Jan. Now 9000 trouble free miles. Easy 160+ winter motorway miles loaded with luggage. Fast smooth quiet almost VW quality (many shared parts) great value 7 year warrantee.. whats not to like.. well anything but a bit hypocritical for buying a Chinese car. Recharge on ionity 73KWh from 10% to 45% then 48.8KWh to 60% If outside temp is over 10°C 4 miles per KWh is easy around town and 3.6 motorway miles and speed.
Just bought one. Loved it on the test drive I took. Surprisingly rapid and super cheap for what you get. Plug your phone in and the infotainment is a moot point. Will save me 100 quid a month on fuel over the crappy engined Dacia that I traded in. It’s brill
Finally, an electric estate that isn’t an SUV. As a recent Audi A4 estate owner, I would say there were a lot of styling choices taken from Audi especially the inside as the layout is almost identical or do all premium cars look the same inside. Definitely one to consider when I buy a new second hand car.
I am a car guy and i love this car. Horses for courses. For my everyday use this is perfect. Practical, economical to run and more affordable to buy than similar options. Its a good enough car. Currently have a 2014 Octavia 1.6 TDI Dsg and i feel it has a lot of the same qualities with the huge bonus of being electric. Just hope MG improves the next generation in the small details (bigger battery, better infotainment, better noise isolation) and doesn't try to go too posh like their Marvel X and make the 5 EV more expensive.
The manufacturers who price their electric cars sensibly, like MG with this one, deserve to do well. When £10k is the general premium to buy an EV over ICE, manufacturers are taking the piss. The second gen of this and the ZS EV will make the European manufacturers crap themselves. Also, amazing how quickly Kia, Citroen and Vauxhall were able to drop their list prices to still get the PICG. 🤡
I have had my second hand MG5 for over a year now and just had two davanti tyres fitted to the front l. They have improved grip, handling and are so much quieter. Some of the crazy wheel spin was due to the bad, factory fit tyres. I am very happy with my cheap EV. New tyres have transferred it.
we have had our mg5 for about 2 months now - and it is amazing, 100% reccommend. If you have any questions from an owners perspective please feel free to reply to this comment ! ( we have also had the zs ev for nearly a year now so are fully electric and fully mg ! )
Thanks :) - keep us posted / do an owners vlog - how would you rate ride comfort and motorway noise level compared to a mk3 Mondeo / similar? - Is driving position good for 6ft - st wheel adj for both rake and reach? - could u sleep in cargo bay (having matched levels) with front seats simply tilted (without needing to interfere with base position) - Since B&Bs now consider themselves same as hotels when it comes only to rates, I can no longer afford them on my National Parks holidays - Can u pre heat cabin via cellphone app (not exactly essential!)? - Is the steering and brake feel good enough? - Keep us posted re best range, 1 up in warmer weather on motorway - over 200? thanks
Come to Shanghai you can see loads of GM5 running as taxis for years now. We call them Roewe instead of MG here in China. Glad they are exporting the car to the UK!
Had one two weeks / 150 miles. It drives lovely. Getting 4 miles/kWh at a push. One issue for me is there doesn’t appear to be a cabin pre-heating option. Going on a family 600-mile trip as soon as we’re allowed.
I came from a preheating car, but to be honest the heater in this is brilliant and within a couple of minutes it's all clear and with heated seats as well.
The look is nice. I am currently looking to buy the new ZS or the MG5 (I am in France, so it is not yet sold). We will see when I can test the MG5 which one I will buy. I don't care about badge or how the car looks.
For me an estate needs to have flat loading with no lip otherwise it's just not easy to load and unload big heavy items. But it's still more attractive than any other ev out there for my needs uf i was considering it as a main car. People mention getting it for 20k so much more like it. In 3 years time when its second hand and in my price range i will consider this
The Mg5 is not cheap, Its just much more affordable for most people, In China the equivalent of Mg5 is probably 10k less, Thats what i call a fair competitive market.
Great review, I enjoyed listening to the banter between you two. You guys seem like you are having a laugh. I might be taking the EV plunge in the summer, and this is a contender. Thanks again
This may be my next private hire taxi. Looks damn fine in my opinion. I like the flat rear floor like my CRV. If it's got decent boot space I'd be happy, and at that price you can't complain .
The MG5 is to the EV world, what the Dacia Logan MCV is to the ICE world. Where I live in Llanelli, one is already being used as a Taxi. Incidentally a Tesla Model 3 is also being used as a private hire vehicle.
You guys sum it up admirably, it's a car with a purpose, that does does all you expect of it. Priced nicely, forget the marquee badge, will be viewed as a classic medium sized EV estate, no doubt in years to come.
I love your comments about the hypocritical comments it's completely true people saying they won't to drive a Chinese car when all the electric cars will be made now in China just like their phone or the computer... Your chat is funny! Subscribed
I feel sorry for people who care what the neighbours think. But then I regularly shop at Aldi, and have even shopped at Lidl. I also shop at Tesco, because it's delivery service is excellent, which sadly Asda's is not. And, I recently shopped at Sainsbury's only to be very disappointed by the quality/freshness/longevity of the products I purchased. I don't think it was about expectations; Sainsbury's quality was simply below Aldi, Tesco, and even Lidl. If indeed I had expectations, it was simply that I didn't expect Sainsbury's to deliver a consumer experience below the cheapest of the other chains. If it had equalled Aldi I'd have been happy enough, even for the extra money, because the fact is that Aldi generally impresses me...except for the 'relatively' limited range. Anyway, I think there's nothing wrong with Skoda, and nothing inherently wrong with MG, especially for the prices you can get one for. Also, as the technology is going to improve rapidly over the next few years, I think there's a certain logic in just getting the cheapest, as long as you can live with the range and can keep it charged easily enough. If you live in London, it's pretty much a no-brainer that any new car purchased for everyday driving should be an EV. Whether an MG is for you, comes down to whether you can keep it charged easily enough. If not, you're probably going to have to more than double the budget and get a Tesla, simply because if you don't have off-street parking, the extra range and the Tesla infrastructure is for sure going to make an EV far easier to live with. Lastly, remember that Tesla has only just got its quality up to a good level, nearly nine years after the Model S was first launched. MG is doing a decent job of bringing decent enough EVs to market at the right prices. And, importantly, the MGs are available to buy. No announcing and then no availability. Or the need to pre-order for delivery in one or two years time. It's also worth noting that many of the EVs currently offered by manufacturers have relatively low ranges and fairly ordinary performance levels. For example, VWs often hyped ID models are really nothing to write home about. For me, at the moment at least, it's either MG or Tesla. As always, YMMV.
Funny isn't it - I also shop at Aldi... AND Sainsbury. And I found the quality of fresh food at Sainsbury to be excellent!! It just goes to show that most people's opinions are generally COMPLETE NONSENSE -and should be ignored......!!!
Funnily enough MG has now made its second good above expectation EV. What will be interesting is if they make a MG3 sized EV with either this battery or their 44kwh battery. Based on the prices of there current EV range this hypothetical car could be below the 20k mark, still a lot but significantly cheaper than models such as the Corsa E and Honda e
Needs 17" wheels. They need sort out the roof rails ( going by MG's own site they are not for using with roof bars "For show only" ) and it needs type approval for towing other then that its a cracking compact estate (it looks the best in Red; shame about the other colours) its a strong contender.
Has it got 215/60/16 tyres. A lot of the large cars seem to be using this on the lowest models of large cars. Superb, mondeo, passat etc. They are absolute balloons!
The roof bars are for decoration only in China too they were never designed for loading, I can only assume there was a cock-up between SAIC and MG UK when it was imported. This issue and the issues regarding the BMS updates to the ZS put me off the MG brand a little so we went for an ID3 instead, I know, I know but it's been fine for us so far touch wood! Got to agree with the conclusion though when we were buying ours it was working out at something like £23k+ and the ID3 wasn't much more in the end so the monthlies worked out the same but at a lower price it makes sense. If they can keep the same price when they bring out the newer face lift model with more range and more tech I think they'll be onto a winner.

Regarding autonomous driving systems. My suggestion is the manufacturer can nominate a percentage of how effective they are. Then, where there is an accident which the autonomous system did not avoid, the manufacturer and driver can split the bill in accordance with the percentage nominated by the manufacturer. E.g. if the manufacturer says it works 10% of the time the manufacturer pays 10% of the damage. If the manufacturer says it works 90% of the time the manufacturer pays 90% of the damage.
This car has one fundamental benefit over other EVs which it is an estate - where are it's competitors in this sector? For anyone needing to use a children's buggy or wheelchair, this is the only vehicle that fits the bill.
what's kind of crazy is ALREADY MG have released a video showing what the newer MG crossover and refresed MG estate will look like - and the front end looks a lot better. Some really impressive specs. Guaranteed more range - as they didn't mention it in the video. So if they're refreshing this in 6 months then this will hammer the resale value of this one. Likely the newer, longer range one will still come in under the £35k goverment grant too. The new looking one I would buy on looks alone!
MG5 refresh will not be in UK until Q2 2022, only being released in Europe LHD in 2021. It was released as a market tester here after customer/dealership feedback.
There is a big difference between sub £35k and £20k. It’s why I bought the MG5 now as it was clear they would do a proper refresh soon after and would charge more for it, this model is a bargain and we won’t see anything like it for this price for years to come.
I'm sad this version is not available in Norway, but the new version will. New version due for launch in October 2021: 400 km WLTP 500 kg trailer 75 kg roof load 11 kW AC-charging 2.5 kW V2L
I almost want to need an estate car just so I can buy one ! Sat in one at the EV Festival in Gaydon, and impressed with the seat comfort and general interior.
As an MGZS driver... I’d have gone for the MG5 and not regretted it, although I’m glad I didn’t - MG pilot is awesome for me (disability makes the assistance on motorways really awesome). Not sure the boot opening is quite good enough for a wheelchair though...

A good standard to set other EV makers, if nothing else it will shake things up and show how much they can be sold for. looks like a good car- no frills and cheap ( what most family's want who anent into cars) I also believe there is a revamped model coming later this year which looks a lot better and roof rack that can hold 75kg iirc )
It will also have the ZS's driver assists, a (trailer) towing capacity and slightly higher range. I'm betting the price will rise though. I did go and look at one of these today and I must say they look better in the tin than on screen. In terms of lifetime ownership it would be cheaper than my Dacia. I'm sorely tempted.....does ebay still have rules about selling children?

Was thinking about almost straight swapping my Golf GTI for one of these due to imminent retirement, there’s even a dealer in my town. The singular thing that has put me off is the word ‘taxi’, because even though I’ve got a VW, the badge really doesn’t come into it, reliably is now my biggest must have. I’ve had cars in the past that taxi drivers choose, (because they have to buy cars that need to be) and now all my kids are grown up, the GTI purchase was a break from that.
I’m amazed how cheap the servicing is, having come from a VW Golf we are now looking at less than a quarter of the servicing cost!

It charges from 20% to 80% in 4.5 hours with a 7.2 wallbox or 40 minutes on CCS where we live CCS is free? All hail the MG5 long may it reign.

I wasn't expecting you to do this with this review but you certainly did 👍
It's not a car I'd ever want but if EVs are going to take over sooner rather than later people need to be encouraged to go and buy.
Nope MG released a statement to their dealer network saying they could take 35kg and then retracted it 2 to 3 hours later!

That is a Rover 75 ... complete with roof bars. You can still get the fittings to make it a roof rack.
