After covering a few hundred miles in a Hyundai Ioniq 5 here I give my verdict including the things i like and do NOT like about the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
It's a great car but there are a few niggles along the way so here i will explain. I am very used to driving a Tesla Model 3 plus I've also spent some time with the Model Y so I can show some direct comparisons along the way...
Let me know what you think.

I too have a P45. There are a number of assistance systems. I agreed with your initial assessment about the slightly modulating steering. But after using it on several long journeys, I have got used to the slight wobble. I think this is to keep you aware that the system is still active and working. As you have to keep your hands on the wheel. So I got used to it. I find the graphics and infotainment fine. Look of inside and outside fab. Very glad I purchased the car. It is good to have EV choice.

I turn off lane assist when I leave home as I live in the countryside and it doesn't work on rural roads. But in order to get the crash safety standards, you can't turn off lane assist permanently. But it is easy to switch off via the dashboard button. The software/infotainment is the same format as in our MY20 Kona, since its update its July 2021 update, which was a big change from the software the car was delivered with.
Yes, we get a lot of LKA warnings.
I see you've changed the dashboard screens from white to black, which is a good feature as the white is very marmite.
Agree, it is a great car, Hyundai/Kia certainly thinking out of the box with their new EVs... Many models planned for the versatile EV platform the Ioniq5 sits on!

Great video. Out of all the IONIC 5 videos I’ve seen, I like how you are telling Hyundai, directly, your straightforward opinion about the things you like and don’t like. The “bold design,” and the choice of a lot of grayish bits of plastics, etc.
I am glad Hyundai is bold with their designs. I prefer a vehicle that stands apart from the rest. I hope they continue to have great designs and offer a lot of features for the money.
I, too, was surprised there was more plastic areas for a vehicle that seems to give the vibe that it has a higher standard of quality.
The launch video of Hyundai, made me think the interior was going to be a bit more quality.
    I want one.
Hope you can do tests on the charging.
And seeing if you can get full performance from the battery.
A different RUclipsr noticed the IONIC 5 doesn’t give full performance/horsepower because the battery temperature is affecting it.
I don’t like that. I want to just unplug and go with full performance regardless of battery temps.

IMHO, IONIQ 5 vs TESLA MODEL Y... :
Tesla great job, max speed, range especially leveraging its shape and weight. Still prefer, being in Europe, comfort. 99% of my trips are within 200kms one way. With the Hyundai IONIQ 5, I do look forward to ventilated seats, Android Auto, the roomy and comfortable interior, and HUD. Also like reclining seats with foot rest and reclining console for arms rest, all electronic aids especially against collisions, automated parking (Executive version), blind spot cams on dashboard when turning, V2L, sun shades integrated in back doors, electric sunroof shade, wide space available inside with good visibility through the back window etc.
And the obviously efficient 400V to 800V internal battery inverter for fast charging.
Other bugs with Tesla : Model 3 too low on the ground (Model Y is a perfected Model 3); door handles too complicated for kids and scratchy with persons with long finger nails; blue jeans bleed on those too white seats.; simplistic navigation system(whereas under ANDROID AUTO: ABRP beta notably has settings for car weight, or TomTom Go 's use of all offline maps and charging stations etc. ); quality of paint jobs ; mediocre internal lighting; loud alerts and other things not so compatible with family driving.
Also 5 year car warranty illimited kms (Max 80 000 for Tesla... Reliability issues?), and 8 year battery warranty (same as Tesla).

Tesla efficiency takes SOME beating, for sure - but, then they have been at the cutting edge of battery and drivetrain tech for a decade now.
But, it's great that consumers are getting a wide and varied choice of EVs now - at pretty well all ends of the spectrum.
And, once China finally decides to export to Europe and the UK, then we'll start to get such affordable EVs that, literally, no one will have the 'EVs are too expensive' excuse anymore...

Took a 24 hour test drive of the ioniq 5 a week after having a model 3 long range for a weekend. The steering wobble when in lane keeping was the same, also it would sometimes just disingage without any notice whatsoever, Basically making the feature not something you could rely on. Tesla autopilot way better! Also The lane assist was annoying as hell down country lanes and I couldn't figure out how to turn it off, To many buttons! The regen had to be reactivated every time I got back into the car with the padal shifts which is annoying. Voice control useless unless for calls. When accelerating off the line there was 1-2 second delay even in Sport mode. A couple of times it would say the key not detected in the car even when it was. I had to jump out lock it and unlock to get it to recognise the key again. infotainment I found decent with Android auto and apple car play. Plug socket under rear seat is a great feature.
Nice smooth ride and better sound proofing then the Tesla but ultimately the ioniq 5 didn't feel special to me where as the Tesla did. Good car and I'm sure it will sell well as many will be happy with it. Good to see Hyundai embracing the future.

Too many buttons? you really had 24 hours and couldn't figure out how to turn off lan assist? Really, I get it :there are better lane assists out there (including Tesla’s) but saying it has too many buttons is clearly a Tesla fans perspective. Most people dont like the absolutely minimalistic stuff in the Tesla.
Also: Regen stays where it was unless you are not in I-Pedal. The delay though is sometimes odd. Sometimes it’s instantaneous, sometimes it has a lag to it. Maybe a thing that can be fixed with an update. Also: did you check Bluelink was connected? Without it, it’s crap-
Sorry, but the way you experienced it does not apply to people who are seriously interested in a car. Before I test drove it I knew the stuff you are complaining about.

I-pedal had to be re-engaged every time I got in the car.
Yes I knew enough about the car before I drove it but no I didn't read the manual first which with the size of it would have used up the 24 hours I had.
Ultimately the car was very good. My negitive points are my personal dislikes. Also 3 out of 5 charging stations I visited didn't work but that's wasn't the cars fault but that added to my experience overall.

      @carroux4050 3 года назад +1

@@dannyspeed Hey Danny, I get it that people have their favorites. And I guess thats perfectly fine. But as you said in your first paragraph this is, yet again, due to driver not knowing better. The Ioniq automatically goes into Park if you open the the door. This applies while the car is turned on and you open it or the car is turned off and is not in N. The start button: ok. But I guess this can't be a dealbreaker since a lot of EVs nowadays still have this button (which I assume is because of drivers used to it).
Tesla is a great example wheres design is before functionality: why'd you think Model S and Model X still have a driver dashboard? It's not about minimalism per se, but to save cost. Also one might say for a Tesla you need to get an introduction as well. How the hell should someone know how to engage Autopilot or just SCC. Even setting back the indicators can be a challenge when you start out.
I think it's unfair to report your dislikes when 80% of them are due to not knowing better...
Don't get me wrong. I like Tesla (even though you might think I don't). Model 3 and Ioniq 5 were on my shortlist. And both are excellent cars. There are pro's and cons on both sides. Viewed objectively there is no winner. :)

    • @dannyspeed
      @dannyspeed 3 года назад +3

@@carroux4050 Its not about the driver knowing better its about how intuitive the experience is. If i put the car in park that means i'm parked if i'm in neutral then i'm obviously not parked. When on an incline you have to engage a hand-break. Otherwise why have you got these options. No experience is better when you have to put more input in to get the same result. Like the Charge port wouldn't open unless you turned the car off, but i suppose there was another obvious thing i missed on that.
People are slow to change, they like the old way of things. I had the original iphone when it came and people/media were saying they like buttons on a phone and we all know how that turned out. In my house I have Alexa controlling my lights or i have other lights on PIRs. I adopt technology quicker the most and i embrace it. When i hear people say they hate having controls on a screen yet you never see any reviewer using voice control. Most of the main stuff is automated anyway and if it aint it should be. I test drove a BMW i3s recently and told the salesman the i-drive system is terrible, his reply was its regarded as one of the best infotainments on the market. I don't want a dial to control a map i want a touch screen.
Tesla didn't save cost they embraced a different approach like Apple did under Steve Jobs and it works. You think to get software to control every aspect of the car is an easy feat? Yes down the line it saves money on buttons ect but you get better user experience imo. Some disagree and thats fine. The model 3 had short videos within the infotainment on how to engage autopilot, i admit the model S i had to google how to turn it on. Agree about the indicator stalk also that does take getting use to. I like how the ioniq automatically re-engaged auto-steer when you changed lane, where as basic autopilot you need to re-engage it.
My negative opinions obviously came out strong. If someone asked me what car to buy i would always say to get a long test drive/hire in both. At the end of the day both are excellent choices.

From other reviews....Tesla ADAS is far superior. Navigation did a poor job of identifying charging locations. Not nearly as fun to drive as a Y and not nearly as powerful. Some say the lack of ventilated seats in Y leaves them with a sweaty back and some say the aircon on the Y is lacking in a hot climate. My Kia PHEV has great aircon but the ventilated seats are a disappointment. Also, the Lane Keep Assist on my Kia does not work on a sunny day with shadows on the road. Is this also a problem with Ionic? Software updates? Really concerned, my Kia has had NONE in over 3 years. Waiting to see the Genesis version since it has powered steering column, hope it will work same as Tesla. Also, my Kia Easy Exit only moves the seat rearward and does not also lower the seat. I find my driving position in my Kia very awkward/uncomfortable. I like the blind spot camera view in dash, but does it also make a sound if someone is in your blind spot? On my Kia, Lane Keep Assist is not available below approx 65 kph, how about the Ionic?

Model Y LR has pretty much the same acceleration from 0-60 as the AWD Ioniq. What are you talking about?
If you’re talking about the Y Performance then consider it has also a much higher price tag and it’s Match will be the Ioniq 5 N

@@carroux4050 I watched a Swedish review that compared the Y LR with the Ioniq 5 and also one of the (Czech?) ID 4 variants we don't get here in the US. I think the Ioniq 5 might have been the single motor which would explain its being slower. He did mention the Ioniq 5 had a larger turning circle than the Y which I found surprising since I thought the Y was pretty bad based on what I heard.

It is annoying to have to turn it off every time, but it’s like this on all modern cars. It actually takes just 2-3 seconds of holding the dedicated button down to disable it. Compare this to ID.3 / ID.4 / Enyaq where it is three button presses on the laggy main screen.
