  • When it comes to comparisons, it's hard to top the experience of real-life owners. While we automotive journalists love to compare vehicles, it's just not the same as living full-time with them. But in this week's video we've found an owner that has both the Tesla Model S and Hyundai Ioniq 5 in his garage.

    I have owned a Model 3 for over 5 years, and am now hoping to move to an Ioniq 5 Limited. Recent upgrades in my Model 3 have made Autopilot much worse with phantom braking, red steering wheel alarms, ping-ponging between lanes. I also prefer a hatchback instead of a trunk. The observation about energy efficiency is spot on. Miles-per-kWh in all other EVs makes much more sense than Tesla's watts-per-mile. Imagine if your gas car displayed "ounces-per-mile" instead of MPG! Derp. The only real advantage with Tesla at this point is the Supercharger network, and with Ford and GM moving in that direction, it wouldn't surprise me if Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, VW, etc., also get on board in the near future.

      Hi Mark, I think you're guess is spot on about the other automakers joining with Tesla as Ford and GM recently announced. But, I'd be hesitant to buy a car on a hunch about what an automaker might do in case Hyundai ends up being a stubborn holdout. If the Supercharger network is a deal breaker, I'd hold off until you see Hyundai commit with an official announcement. Since Ford has already committed to NACS, I'd also invite you to watch this review of the Mustang Mach-E: ruclips.net/video/wabAo-0wjCM/видео.html

    • @Yanquetino
      @Yanquetino Год назад +1

      @@EVRider That's exactly my intent right now. Gotta wait and see how this plays out. As for Ford, I already took a Mach-E for a test drive, and really liked it. Its BlueCruise is much better that what EAP has now become. My only hesitation is that its charging speed and curve is slower than either my Model 3 or Hyundai's latest EVs. That might change with this Supercharger deal…?

    • @EVRider
      @EVRider  Год назад +1

      @@Yanquetino No question, the current gen Mach-E charges slower than the Ioniq 5. I've seen a peak speed of 163kW in the Mach-E and well over 200 with the Ioniq 5. While Ford may continue to tweak/improve the charging curve a bit, I wouldn't expect to see a big jump in speed until either a next-gen comes out or a mid-cycle refresh takes place. Until we see more testing, its too soon to say with certainty how CCS cars will perform in the real world at Tesla Superchargers.

    • @rinbine2713
      @rinbine2713 Год назад

      It is just your ideas.
      In real world? Do you remember why Tesla banned other EVs from using superchargers?
      So many Tesla users complained it.
      It will repeat.

    The big clunky looking computer screen on the Tesla looks like an afterthought, almost like someone glued on a laptop screen. The Ionic design is much more user friendly IMO. I much prefer the buttons for heat and AC control versus menu scrolling.

  • @ricco123tube

    I recently test drove both and I'm glad I did. I was leaning towards the Model 3 but I am now looking at the ioniq 5.
    Both good cars but the cut backs on the model 3 are too much and I just feel like the ioniq 5 is easier to park, manoeuvre and drive here in the UK where the roads are tight and twisty and parking spaces are notorious for being small.
    If I were driving long distances on a regular basis I might prefer the Tesla supercharger network, but this isn't a consideration for me.

    • @EVRider
      @EVRider  5 месяцев назад

      Concerning the Model 3, keep in mind that since this video was produced Tesla is in the process of introducing its Model 3 Highland mid-cycle refresh. Although I haven't personally experienced one yet, it has received numerous upgrades.

    I have an Ioniq5 so I'm biased but one of the reasons I wouldn't consider a Tesla was because of the monolithic center screen. I just think it's stupid and a safety issue. I know other Tesla models now have a rudimentary "gauge" cluster in front of the driver But I just think the Ioniq5 and other EVS with a more car like instrumentation are better and safer. I don't want to have to be swiping through screens while driving.

    • @EVRider
      @EVRider  11 месяцев назад +1

      For the most part I agree with you, although I'll add some automakers - including Tesla - making large screens are doing a wonderful job with interfaces to make them intuitive and the touch points easy to hit. But no question, if a driver has more than one touch or swipe to do what a knob or button can do with one, it's a step backwards. The one area where touch may never equal physical controls is feel. With a good jog wheel or button, my eyes don't need to move to execute a function, but with my Mach-E's touchscreen I find myself glancing away momentarily to hit the touch point even after owning it more than a year.

    I was cross-shopping a Y and an Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 is the best-looking EV available in the US but everything else is a win for the Tesla, including the interior. If I could make a Frankenstein vehicle, I would replace my Model Y's body with an Ioniq 5 exterior body in shooting star.

      100% this. There's a couple gimmicks Ioniq 5 has that I'd love to see Tesla have, like the ventilated seats, rear sunshades, rear column fans, sliding console, etc. but they're mostly just gimmicks. I love how both cars look, but Ioniq 5 is really unique and interesting.

  • @SkaBob

    We have a 2022 Ioniq 5 AWD and never really considered going with a Tesla. We mainly charge at home or work so Teslas improved charging network wouldn't have been much use for us. And the Ioniq 5 is a good looking car with a lot of usable room inside. Teslas all seem look about the same, just different sizes of the same overall design functional but becoming boring and more dated every year. Tesla needs some new models and new designs.

    I drove a Model 3 LR AWD for 4 years but now own a 2024 Ioniq 5 Limited. No regrets. Ioniq has much more customization options. I also can do infotainment hacks like add a full Android experience to the touch screen, so I can watch everything you can watch on an Android tablet. The ride is better, it's still about as quick as a Model Y, I have a sunshade, ambient lighting, ventilated seats and heated seats/steering wheel, and SiriusXM radio for starters. The seats in the Tesla are unbeatable, but the wipers were always annoying. The Ioniq are much better. I also can run my house in a power outage. Both good cars and have their pros and cons, but so far, so good. I also am tired of Elon and his nonsense.

      That's one of the great things about Android and Android Auto. Even without rooting, thanks to sideloading, it's so flexibile. I'm using an app that allows a variety of side-loaded apps to show in Android Auto and of course there are ways to run full Android on car screens. I own a Tesla Y performance 2020 and it’s hard to beat for trills (0-60 in 3.7s). Rattles are bad, suspension and 21inch Pirelli tires is bad for bumps and cracks but great for road control. Road noise is too high in Tesla Y. In addition to the Tesla super charger network, I can charge anywhere with my CCS adapter!
    My max is 250kW/he (best real results 192kW/he). Let’s face it, the Tesla charging network is second to none and far better than any other. Hey if Ford and GM are changing to Tesla’s form factor, that says a lot. I like the retractable foot rest while charging. The sliding console is not a deal maker. I would recommend watching Munro live as they are reverse engineering a Ionic 5. I have FSD since 2021 and it works better and everywhere and all the time with every update. Talking about updates, at least 1 a month with added features and improvements on current ones. The after market products are by far the most creative and available for those that like to custom their vehicles and the wrapping industry has grown exponentially because of Tesla’s bad paint job 😢. Availability is another issue with imported EVs. 8-16 months for any German brand. I always though the Hyundai group would gain 2nd EV position world wide and was hoping they would adopt the Tesla charging form factor in americas. Let’s see what happens.

  • @kyleb8117

    I like the realistic perspective and comparison, but the price difference between the two of these makes it a bit unfair of a comparison. It's just about a $20,000 difference in price. That's HUGE. To give some perspective, you can get a performance Model Y and still have $5k left over with the price of a Limited trim Ioniq 5 (which, let's be real, is the only trim of Ioniq 5 to bother with). I can get a used Model 3 Long Range with FSD for nearly half the cost of an Ioniq 5 Limited.
    It really upsets me how many features that I want in the Ioniq 5, including basic safety features like the turn signal video and some sensor warnings, are only on the Limited trim. Who puts safety features for their car only on the most expensive trim? Insane.
    It's also interesting to me that when you asked what they miss from each car, there was zero mention of the gimmicks of Ioniq, like V2L or the AR HUD. You'd also think there'd be mention of Tesla not needing to be started/stopped/locked because it's done automatically. Maybe they haven't owned them long?

      Keep in mind this was one owner's perspective. Different people have different likes and dislikes. In terms of it being "a bit unfair of a comparison," it is common for some people to cross-shop vehicles at different price points - if they can afford to. Not everyone is drawn to the cheapest - or conversely - the most expensive car.

    • @kyleb8117
      @kyleb8117 10 месяцев назад

      @@EVRider I think if there's a price difference that's considerable (like in this case being able to buy a second car with the price difference between them), it doesn't matter what some people do when shopping. I think if it's going to be a comparison, to be fair, it should at least be pointed out the difference in cost. I never said people are looking for the cheapest or most expensive car. I'm simply pointing out that a comparison should be fair and actually compare things that are relatively equal, otherwise why compare them? Someone buying a Model 3 on a budget for a Limited Ioniq 5 is going to suddenly have a lot of excess money that could've been spent on upgrading that Model 3 or maybe finding a different EV that costs that difference and maybe has more features they want. Why isn't there a comparison video between owning a Nissan Leaf and a Lucid Air? Is it maybe because that comparison would be a bit unfair and pointless?
      Yes, I get that different people have different tastes, but it boggles my mind he doesn't mention really obvious stuff that affects your every drive with the cars and are very noticeable. For instance, I saw someone compare a Model Y to Ioniq 5 they just bought. They had a funny story about how they accidentally left it running multiple times because they were used to Tesla shutting the car down and locking it automatically. That's something you'd notice, no matter who you are.
      *Edit:* I typed an extra word. (Also probably should've pointed out the comparison is also unfair with the M3 being a sporty car versus the Ioniq which is meant to be a more chill family SUV type of car in my original comment, but oh well.)

      I haven't driven the Ioniq 6 yet but since their underpinnings are the same I would expect to be just as impressed by it as the 5. Between the two it comes down to styling/body type preference. The 5 will be a bit more practical since it's a hatchback.
