The look of awe on your face throughout the video was priceless. That was basically me the first time I saw it on MTV. This song feels even more relevant today than in '88 ... unfortunately.
The riff is absolutely insane... And soooooooo different than anything on the radio at the time. The guitarist is really the reason I continue to play guitar, to this day!
This song was way ahead of it's time, or should i say instead -- this song is timeless. I remember when i heard it when it first came out -- still have the original cassette tape -- and man, Living Color hit it good, bangin, and a real and total commentary on how the world worked then and still does even moreso now. Glad you took the chance to listen to it, Salvo
They are so very diverse in their music. "Love Rears it's Ugly Head" is funky and jazzy while "Glamour Boys" is pure pop gold. They do whatever they want and it works.
I remember when this group started out - a lot of people thought they were just a vanity project because the leader was an actor - but they were so GOOD.
Saw them just a few months ago and they still throw tf down. It’s amazing that they’ve stayed together this long and are still out there doing it. Vernon Reid is a bad man. And Glover still brings it. Awesome 🔥🔥🔥
The thing about the cult of personality in this song is that it is not necessarily bad. That is why they speaks about Mussolini and Ghandi. It can be very bad but can also be used for good. It seems like more of a statement about how the world works. What motivates people from the outside.
Cult of personalities is usually applied to fascists and dictators it’s an excellent descriptive. It can also apply to cults and fans. Timeless this song, and its relevance
The opening rifts are pretty much iconic. The wrestler, CM Punk, when the this song hits the arena roof pretty much blows of because the cheers are so loud.
I discovered this group/song on a bootleg mix tape I bought in Bangkok in the late 80s. What I really loved about it, besides some great rock, is the clear message in the lyrics. A classic.
Thanks for doing this one. Although Living Color ae fairly well-known and won a Grammy they nevertheless should have been way bigger they were. Killer musicians, great front man, amazing and intelligent songwriting that has something to say, and a varied and diverse body of work. I saw them live and up close in a Portland club and they were just unbelievable. So tight and solid. I still listen to their music often. You should check out "Open Letter (to a Landlord)."
I saw them open for the Stones in Atlanta on that same tour. I went for the Stones and left a huge Living Colour fan. I used this song to teach the concept of “cult of personality” to my high school history class. Better than the textbook.
When 'Living Color' got a Grammy for 'new rock artists', one said: "...& we're *'In Living Color'!", so 📺*Wayans brothers sued 'em & won $4M for Trademark💸infringement!
This song STILL has the power to blow people away. What a powerful and pertinent message. All four of them are monsters here. Imagine what it was like to hear it when it was released way back when, and by an entirely Black band!?! Amazing. Plus, they totally rock live. Just saw them this year in Paris. They still killin’ it. And the message is still pertinent today. Check out more from the album Staind, which is my favorite after this one.
@@BAD46660 I agree with you, but you must admit, being an entirely Black and hard rock band was totally unique and unexpected - reactors also say it over and over. So many people didn’t even realize until they actually saw the video. Although, the musicianship was and is remarkable and what drew me to the song initially. Didn’t shock me at all, but I think it did shock people from certain areas of the U.S. I’m from the South, so I do know.
this song, "Fuel" by Metallica, "Kickstart My Heart" by Motley Crue , poor decisions and a Rent-A-Center Yamaha stereo got me evicted from my first apartment. good times, so worth it
"Vivid is an open letter to rock & roll itself, a demand for equal time and respect from a music that is Living Colour's birthright." -- David Fricke, Rolling Stone Oh wow, Fricke with the deep insights as usual. 🙄 Well, if their motive was to get equal time and respect, they got it. I don't know if they struggled with record labels and such, but they made killer rock music, and those of us who liked rock liked Living Colour. We didn't give a shit what color they were. For whatever reason, black musicians basically stopped playing rock and roll in the '60s (with some exceptions, e g. Jimi Hendrix. And no one gave a shit that he was black either). Black folks gravitated toward R&B, soul, funk, dance pop, and later hip hop. It's not white people's fault that happened. If black people want to play rock, I highly doubt most people would be saying "what? A black rock band? Hell no!" Most people only care if it's good, not the race or ethnicity of the musicians. The focus on Living Colour being a "black rock band" came mostly from the media, from what I recall, not fans. I remember thinking it was cool because you didn't see many black people playing hard rock. I was kind of hoping they would start a trend, which didn't happen. Mostly I just thought of them as a kick ass rock band.
What just happened? Greatness just happened! Vernon Reid shreds in a way that SAYS something.... he slips in and out of melodic and frantic at will in this solo; truly awesome. Saw a more recent clip of them performing and Corey Glover's voice is even BETTER than back in the day, if that can be believed....!
Biden and Kamala didn’t reach thst level. Obama, definitely. But Trump is the master at manipulating the masses with empty promises of a return to something that never existed.
Nice. The late 80's and early 90's saw a lot of serious genre blending: rap, electro, hard rock, funk. Nothing quite like it. Check out the "Judgment Night" soundtrack for more great examples.
I think you should dive down the rabbit hole that is Muse. I recommend you start with Stockholm Syndrome at The Mayan. They really are something else..❤❤❤
I'm not saying this because I'm old, but I've noticed something watching the commercials for the Grammys or some Music award thing coming up. The Music you younger ones listen to what's coming out now lacks the passion that what we listened to back when I was young.
I am gen x. Living color and rage. Floyd and beasties. Metallica and the beatles. The eagles and the red hot chili peppers. This song is the explanation of the ignorance of the masses. Vernon Reid...criminally underrated, underappreciated, overlooked guitarist.
Very cool dude as well.
Totally shreds! Absolutely underrated

Melted our faces off in concert. The show was so tight. Lightening in a bottle for sure.
"Open Letter to a Landlord " is another great song of theirs
I think it's criminally underrated!
Single most underrated band of all time!!!

Love your reaction Salvo, I think we all had the same reaction the first time we heard this song!
Absolutely! It totally blew my mind!!!
Corey Glover is pure energy on stage. Couldn't take my eyes off him.
This song is always on my thumb drive. Its a staple song for me. Fantastic. and it helps me drive 80 MPH
😂😂😂😂 I don't need help doing 80...but this tune does kick a$$!
Man, you have to hear Living Colour do Blow Up The Outside World (tribute to Chris Cornell). The emotions are HIGH!
The thing about the cult of personality in this song is that it is not necessarily bad. That is why they speaks about Mussolini and Ghandi. It can be very bad but can also be used for good. It seems like more of a statement about how the world works. What motivates people from the outside.
Such a great song! Have loved it since it was released...and It's even more relevant today. Awesome guitar and fabulous vocals...killer lyrics!!

Current. Relatable. Scary.

The same face I had when I first heard this song when it came out in 1989. Jaw on the floor. Masterpiece ❤
Had the pleasure of seeing them live not too long ago, best show I’ve been to
My Dad watched them open for the Rolling Stones. Man, I wish I could have seen that.

Not in all of recorded history. Unfortunately it's the same old same old on a constant loop.

Saw them in 89 opening for Rolling Stones in Toronto Ontario Canada, great show,
Living color, Guns N’ Roses and the Stones ?
After that tour, Mick Jagger asked Vernon Reid to play guitar on his following solo album
I saw them open for the Stones in Atlanta on that same tour. I went for the Stones and left a huge Living Colour fan.

This is a banger they actually have some other good songs as well I saw them open for the stones at Shea Stadium Steel wheels tour
that guitar 🎸 solo, 😳 WOW!!! 😮😊
One of my favorite bands back then! And they suddenly disappeared, so it felt. Great song! Love the whole album it came from...
I was 12 when this song hit the radio and I ran out for the cassette tape and wore it out. Vernon Reid is a BEAST on guitar.

There is a fairly recent(ish) rendition of this song from The Howard Stern show -- might not be worth an upload, but definitely worth a watch.
Many a guitarist has been broken trying to master that Reid solo. I love Corey Glover’s voice.

Vernon Reid is an under-appreciated guitarist imo. I've loved this song since the first time I heard it in 88. Trump is personified here.
So is Biden and Kamala. But then again so is MLK and Ghandi.
