"Cult of Personality" refers to the manipulation tactics that political, religious, and social leaders use to gain the trust and support of the masses, and maintain control of a population. It's about how easily we as a society give away our power to those we see as "charismatic" or "influential".
This was 1988/89 and along with bands like Jane’s Addiction, Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Living Colour the groundwork was laid for what was to come with Grunge, 90s alt rock, and Nu metal! Another great reaction!
Man what a MASSIVE song, the entire album is fire. They were really popular on University Campuses, blowing everyone's minds with their Music. I know for a fact they are a Socially Conscious, intelligent, incredibly talented group of men. Still on my Playlist for when I'm cleaning house lol.
Powerful lyrics. Especially the last couple of verses: "You game fortune! You gave me fame! You gave me power in your god's name! I'm every person you need to be!"
Living Colour were really big with this in the outgoing 80s, eraly 90s. Beside Bad Brains and Body Count one of the rare black rock bands and therefore exceptional. For some reaosns I don't know and recalll, they never made it big beside this one hit. But they were really good. Though maybe I know why, and I fear it's the being black part…bunch of white guys from Seattle came up and went great.
Absolutely delighted to see you hearing this and getting the awesome of it over 30 years after these guys blew my poor little mind!! Back then, popular music had got so damn bland, and crassly played punk and vacuous pop music had kinda relegated technically brilliant artistry and musicianship almost to extinction and when I (and other 20-something year old musicians I knew/played with) were almost feeling like being damn good at your instrument was getting to the point of being considered old fashioned in an age of near ubiquitous bullshit synth/sequencer/pretty nonsense, these guys stirred us, gave us faith in the art, inspired us! (not to forget plenty of other 'musician's musician' bands you had to really search for 'cos they never hit the radio like Rush etc) An excellent song of theirs that grabbed me and showed me musicianship wasn't dead (while cleverly disguised as a throwback pop rock track) was 'Love Rears its Ugly Head'... As a player who still values instrumental/musical technique/awesomeness it still blows my mind just how good these guys really were. For another almost forgotten band of unsung genius from around that time I STRONGLY recommend Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, starting with 'Television (the drug of a nation)' and 'Music and Politics'
I remember this one as a bit of a one hit wonder.. but really good song. Great reaction again, I love how you guys really let yourselves get absorbed into the music, regardless of genera. You guys really give it a listen and then just offer us your authentic take on what you thought of the song. I think these days they would have a few more names to add to the list of Cult of personalities. This one will always stand the test of time.
Corey Glover is an incredible vocalist, and Vernon Reid is one of the best guitarists in rock (not saying he’s god level or best of the best, but he’s incredible) - they had a few other “hits” but I don’t think any took off like this song. Great reaction, thank you!

Vernon Reid on the lead guitar. My mind was blown the first time I heard it on MTV. I went out the next day and bought the album.
This band is amazing. Corey Glover, Vernon Reid, Doug Wimbish, Will Calhoun. Every one a master of their instruments.
Its clobbering time...
Well this brings back some memories. Haven’t heard it in an age
