RDJ got nominated for an OSCAR for this role. Also, the Les Grossman's character was almost entirely Tom Cruise's idea. "I want fat hands, and I'm gonna dance."

Tropic Thunder is satire at its finest! They really showed the craziness of Hollywood and some of its actors. 🤣

Tropic Thunder is the greatest comedy that was ever attempted. The whole movie is a self-depricating look at everything wrong with the entire movie process, from actors to executive production, including casting an A-list actor as a black person just to get them in the cast. RDJ nailed it, but everyone was scene stealing in the movie, including Tom Cruise, Danny McBride, Nick Nolte, Mathew McConaughey, etc. Absolutely epic. And, true to form, RDJ kept in character through the DVD/BluRay commentary. And for those that haven't heard the commentary, it is well worth it to hear about how this all came together. There are even extras featuring RDJ as his character.

"Man, I don't drop character 'till I done the DVD commentary."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Brandon Soo Hoo and Sandra Valladares.
Cameos Cameos Fact: Tobey Maguire, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lance Bass, Jon Voight, and Jason Bateman play fictional versions of themselves.
Method Actor Fact: When recording the audio commentary for the Unrated DVD and Blu-ray, Robert Downey, Jr. actually spends the entire commentary as the character that appears on the screen as the movie progresses.
Historical Fact: The South East Asian gang Flaming Dragon, led by a pre-teen boy, was modeled after God's Army, a guerrilla army in Myanmar. The group was led by twin brothers Johnny Htoo and Luther Htoo, who were nine years old when it was founded in 1997. Johnny and Luther Htoo were fond of American action movie heroes, especially the Rambo franchise.
Cruise Unbound Fact: Ben Stiller said nearly all aspects of the Les Grossman character were developed by Tom Cruise, including the dancing and the look of the make-up. Stiller said that in addition to the more obvious make-up effects applied to Cruise's face and head, and the extra hair on his chest and arms, Cruise also decided to play the character wearing oversized prosthetic hands.

I've seen this movie a couple of down times and I still stumble across stuff each time I watch it. I'm amazed at how many people don't get some of the lines like "Tropic Thunder; it's kind of my Catcher in the Rye" - I mean that's a highly-suspect statement considering that's the book that Mark David Chapman had on him when he shot John Lennon and claimed that it was the influence for the shooting.
In addition, the cinematography and soundtrack were awesome. The backlighting on Nick Nolte in the early scenes, the shots of the choppers coming in the opening scene, etc.

This movie is a perfect test to see if you can get along with someone or not. If a person gets even a little bit offended or takes any part of it seriously, then I know there's no way I can ever be friends with that person!!

RDJ playing a black character is satire of Hollywood and how far method actors go in movie roles.
He's not playing a black character to mock black people. His character in this movie is a method actor who goes over the top to immerse himself in his movie roles. It's supposed to be over the top and ridiculous.
It's funny because it mocks real life Hollywood method actors.
That's the important thing that people who want to be offended by it overlook.

"You?!! You... Hit that director in the face... really f*cking hard."
Great reaction, bromigo. Thanks for the laughs.
"I know dude died... I don't know if he meant to..." 😂

The great thing about RDJ in this movie is that his character's whole storyline isn't done as a joke to put down black people through blackface. It's done as a joke to put down the act of blackface itself. And in a broader sense it's making fun of self important serious actors who profit off of other people's stories without respecting it.

How the hell is this movie racist?? Seriously, how? That word has been thrown around and misused so much the last 10-15 years. It has completely diminished what it actually means now! That goes for all of the other "ist" and "ism"s" as well.
