  • In 1964, Samaria “Cookie” Mitcham Bailey was among the first Black students to desegregate public schools in Macon, Georgia. Sixty years later, her 13-year old great-granddaughter, Zo’e Johnson, attends First Presbyterian Day, a predominantly white private school that opened as white families fled desegregation.
Researchers call schools like these “segregation academies” and say they have diverted funds from public education, perpetuating poverty and inequality.
Cookie hoped that her work desegregating schools would lead to more equal educational opportunities for future generations. Yet, when Zo’e began to have problems at her local public middle school, her family searched for options. Almost all were schools that remain largely segregated.
With the help of a state voucher-like tuition grant, Cookie has paid for Zo’e’s seventh grade year at the school. But she’s not sure she can continue to afford it.
This short documentary explores the challenge the family now faces.

If the private school is publicly funded or takes money from the state it is NOT private. Financial aid = STATE money.

She said 60yrs later and racism is still going on. Yes it is because parents are teaching their children. what they were taught, and the cycle continues. Today's children should be talking about racism as a history lesson, not an experience.

Vouchers are segregation. Stop state and federal funding of private schools.

Let us not rewrite history. FPD “was established” as a “segregation academy.” As a taxpayer, I am adamantly opposed to state and federal funding of private schools.

This video was well done but heartbreaking. I wish I were a millionaire to sponsor Zo'e and other students like her. I hope the other segregated private schools follow FPD, but they need to hire black teachers. Come on. I hope you do a follow-up. Zo'e and her family are beautiful. I loved the last scene: "It's a great day for tennis!" Beautiful, strong women like Cookie are remaking our world. I cannot even fathom what she went through. We need an end to racism, and we need people who will lead us out of this darkness.

Zo'e's family can't fix the system, but raising her with good values and ensuring she gets a good education is a step towards making things better. Children are the future, after all. Zo'e will grow up to be a successful black woman and if she has kids, they'll benefit from her success. Hell, maybe she'll even get into a position where she CAN change the system.

At the end of the video I said, “I hope someone who can afford to will pay for Zoe’s tuition. I wish I could.” It’s sad that not all children have the same opportunities as other children.

@@debbiewheaton5528 At least Zo'e is only going to miss a year. Kind of sucks, but it will just be a little bump in the road.

What an amazing kid! She seems so wise and mature. I hope she goes as far as she wants to go with her tennis.

Sadly, social problems that have been around for hundreds of years will rarely disappear in a few generations.

Beat me to it! Hell, one Georgia high school finally had an integrated prom like 7 or 8 years ago.
