BEST NINTENDO SWITCH D-PAD (...is a PS4 controller?!)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 авг 2024
- Nintendo Switch! Why is it so difficult to find a good controller for using Switch when docked? Until now we've had the fairly good Hori D-Pad Joycon but it only works when handheld leaving us to need a different controller when the Nintendo Switch is docked. Is it really necessary that we buy an adapter and use a PS4 controller to make up for the lack of Switch Controller options?!
What do you think? Would you use this Hori Fighting Commander for playing platform games or fighting games? Tell me in the comments below!

Just wanted to let you know Hori made a native version of this controller for the switch now! I was thinking about picking it up hahaha
Did you ever end up grabbing this controller?
I use the PlayStation version with a converter so I’d love to be able to use something native to the switch but I have some serious concerns about the shoulder button setup of the switch version
@@dojomama I didn't because it's dummy expensive in Australia, just like all other peripherals :(
i might pick one up because i hate using the pro controller Dpad and my stick is only for PS4. It's like 40€ here
Would be perfect if it was 2.4ghz wireless bluetooth

NihongoGamer 2019
i have one 3 years very good will buy a other if its damage
Some tips for people using these controllers:
-On the PS4 version used in this video, use "PC" mode whenever possible. It has the lowest lag in that mode, and is actually one of the fastest pads available because of it. Avg of 1.3ms with 1000hz polling on MiSTer FPGA.
-When playing non-fighting games or games where you would only use 2-4 buttons on the front of the controller, try using the right side 4 buttons instead of the left/inner 4. This can make moves easier and be more comfortable, depending on the size of your hand, and perhaps alleviate complications with techniques like the Mega Man dash jump demonstrated in the video @ 13:20
Great video overall, and reflects my own personal experience with this controller vs the other options you showed, including the 8bitdo M30. The m30 is great in some games, but those non-uniform buttons on the front make it less desirable in fighting games, and the classic saturn d-pad style isn't as good for charge characters and certain moves, because of the easier-to-hit diagonals at times, I've found.
Keep up the great content amigo. Appreciate it.
There are so many "faux-reviews" of these controllers it's unreal. Seeing controller movement data on-screen and actual real-world performance in a variety of situations besides the common-and-lazy "I can do hadokens" that most other videos limit it to, is important. 👍
Do you happen to know how the controller shown in the video performs on the PS5?
Sending a thank you from the future! These tips are very helpful. Just ordered one of these in anticipation of the MVC Fighting Collection :)
The 6 button layout was how all the street fighter arcade games were arranged. No one I knew ever used the 6 button controller with their index fingers in the 90's as far as I know
You can use the Nintendo Switch version on PS4/PS5 on Street Fighter V under the “Legacy controller” option. I know this is from a year ago but I thought I’d let anyone know
I feel like you buy a new controller every video. Can you make a video where you show all your controllers?

I wonder if the dpad works well in tekken..........
This Hori Fight pad has been my #1 choice for the past 2 and a half years for Tekken tag 2 and Tekken 7. No issues at all though people say it only lasts for a few months. I've dropped it like a 100 times. Plus its a great Raspberry pi controller for retro games.
Hi man, I was just curious, does your controller still work? I'm thinking of getting one but people say that they mostly fail after a few months or in a year.
@@mendozacarlosfelipew.3055 my brother has it now though he's not using it, it's is working still as far as I know.
As for the one who have them not working it's a mystery really. The electronics are not under any electrical load, it's a simple controller after all. And Hori has been making controllers since the Super Nintendo, I think they have the experience making electronics. I guess people simply don't take care of their stuff. I'd definitely give it a try I totally recommend it.
@@Eth3realwarrior is there a wireless version?
@@mendozacarlosfelipew.3055 I have 2 of them one for Xbox and one for PS4 and they have both lasted me over 3 years. I take good care of my stuff.
The Brooks adapter is very expensive. You can get a Mayflash Magic-NS and it will serve the same purpose for cheaper
I think brooks is the only legal adapter for evo, not sure how important that is
I second this, works great on pc as well
My dad who was a teen in the arcades way back then actually prefers using home controllers with the 3 fingers style, even if it only has 4 face buttons.
Thank you so much for demonstrating instant air dashes, clean iads are my main criteria for judging a dpad. It's also the reason I want a hitbox so bad.
When I'm shopping for controllers, I typically check here first. Thanks!
For me, I love the Sega Saturn controller. It is by far the best controller for fighting.
I've seen many people say that the sega saturn and sega genesis controllers are almost if not the holy grail of dpad's for fighting why is it so good ( looking to purchase a good dpad controller)
@@blank9373 the dpad is not sharp like Ps but rounded in shape and smooth. It's continuing direction in any direction. You can play any fighting games without getting a blister. This is just the dpad.
The 6 buttons are all on pad as if it's a miniature arcade style button. Majority of gamepad has only 4 buttons and 2 on the shoulder button of the controller. Using both these 2 buttons are harder to do especially the left shoulder button. Try doing a fireball on sf with the left shoulder button. It's dam hard and uncomfortable. So majority of any pad beside Genesis and Saturn uses the 4 buttons instead.
If you want to try it, go to any retro game store and ask for a Sega Genesis 6 button controller and Sega saturn. The Sega Saturn is an improve version of the Genesis 6 button layout. Some people like the Genesis better but for me, I like the Sega Saturn controller for fighting games.
@@tr1bes OK it does sound reasonably good but if you want to play a wide range of fighting games would it be better to get something like a stick or a hori fighting commander would the hori even be good at alot of different types of fighting games
@@blank9373 There are 2 types of fighting preferable. One is either the stick that resemble the arcade version while the other as a casual gamers on a pad. It's up to your preference. Majority of Pro use the arcade stick. I believe one Pro player use a pad. Just take a look at what the Pro use on pad and or stick and use that brand instead. They are the one with the most knowledge on fighting controller.
@@tr1bes OK thanks I'll think about it a little bit longer and do some more research on the topic thanks again 👍
I've been using this controller for all my emulation for the past 2 years. I cannot recommend it enough. The D-Pad is the best on the market.
I've been using the 8-bitdo SF30 PRO for emulation, and it has been such a disappointing experience. I mean, it's not that bad, but it's barely average, and for €40-€50, it's unacceptable. I can't wait to get the Hori.
Ye these or ps4 controller have good d-pads. Another one i can recommend that has a really gooddpad is the logitech f310, for pc is but the one has a really stiff bumper for 6 button fighters.
This year there is a "Fighting Commander" for Nintendo Switch.
This is laid out like the Sega Saturn controller. The shoulder buttons can be used for 3x punches or 3x kicks.
6:58--Ask, and ye shall receive.
I bought this controller early last year when DBFZ came out and I absolutely love it. I played DBFZ and SC VI and I use it for emulators all the time. It's the best controller I purchased since the Switch Pro controller.
Did you buy the controller for the switch or the ps4? I have a switch and I’m thinking of buying this controller along with a magic adapter for my switch to play DBFZ.

Pokken controllers are awesome, but sadly still iffy for fighting games.
Yancade hand built games machines so you wouldn’t recommend it for a game like dragon ball fighterz?
@@prisonmike3605 It would probably be o.k for DBF, I have issues when playing street fighter in making certain movement points.
Yancade hand built games machines gotcha man. I’m thinking of picking up this hori fighting commander controller so I can play dragon ball fighterz with but I need someone’s insight of how well the controller works with the game.
You should try the PowerA switch wired fightpad. I'd really like to know what you think about it it's like a $60 buy but it looks very similar to this one.
The PowerA dpad feels better than this hori imo. It has a rolling dpad and is smoother for circular motions. The Horis are also known to not be the most durable long term. Jury is still out on PowerA since it's new.
Downsides to PowerA are the super sensitive shoulder buttons for L and R, and the fact that its 59.99 when the hori is usually only around 40. Since you need an adapter to use the hori on switch, if you dont already own one the price probably equals out. I personally like the PowerA feel better. Both are solid buys though. If you've ever use that single hori joycon or the pokken controller, the dpad is exactly the same
@@misterkeebler I mean my hori controller like this one died in the first year.
@@BGRecon ya I'm not too surprised to hear that. I've heard similar stories from buyers of this particular Hori model
He should, the Hori breaks in a year + the Power A Fusion has a better dpad.
a long time ago, snes era, i had a controller with a 6 button layout called "Capcom Pad Soldier" it had a handle on the d-pad side and you use your fingers on the button side, it had no triggers. I wish i could mod one of those to work in today's games. the handle just made the difference.
Yes, you're supposed to rest the right side of the controller on something (usually your leg) when using the claw grip for the buttons.
lil majin :()
Dude, you should review the PowerA Fusion fight pad controllers for the PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
You seemed so thrilled with the 8bitdo m30. As someone who just got one I'd be interested in hearing what issues you encountered.
M30 was a bit strange for 360 motions. Not exactly sure why. Also no shoulder buttons. Other than that though quite a nice pad
@@NihongoGamer but there ......are....two shoulder buttons?!?
@@dneck No there aren't.
This is helpful because,
A) I've always had a PlayStation since. PS2.
B) I'm into fighting games (going to evo next year possibly)
C) I've been wanting to get a Switch for the new Sword & Shield pokemon game.
So thanks. I might get this aswell
I've always played "crab claw" style on a pad, with my fingers on the face buttons. That's just what came naturally when I picked up the controller. I hold in up with my thumb underneath, but my brother (who also plays crab claw style) rests the pad on his leg. Just gotta go with whatever feels right for you
So, the best of all is a sega saturn copy paste.😆
We gotta go out of our way to use better controller layouts that Nintendon't make.
@@CyberVirtual pro controller
Exactly.
Best of all is the wii classic controller, no cap. I still use it with the 8bitdo adapter on switch and pc, i think it's still the best one to date
I love the Fighting Commander 4, but prefer the previous Hori release the Fighting Commander Pro. The D Pad can be adjusted. The drawback was you needed to tighten the DPad In place once you got it positioned where you like and excessive play would loosen it. If I’m not using a stick I use my PS2 Saturn Controller with an adapter.
HORI makes some good controllers imo. I love my RAP4 Kai. If I had to use a pad for fighting games, I’d buy the one in your thumbnail. Gotta have 6 front facing buttons.
Back in ps2 days, mad catz made decent controllers too. Especially fighting game arcade sticks. Fighting game pros still use those mad catz to this very day
I've had a Hori FC for a while, and love it. Easily my go to for 6 button fighters.
The Brook Adapter is the real mvp of the whole video.
In DBFZ you can reset training mode (touchpad) by pressing L3 and R3 at the same time so this controller is good for that
Just order this gamepad now with express delivery today. I’ve seen this video twice before and brought a new improve madcatz StreetFighter V fightpad pro. I’m not happy with the design layout and triggers which has a little to much travel. So hopefully I get some better results with this pad. I’m not ready to spent $300 on a fight stick as of yet.
I have it and use it for dragonball fighterz. It's awesome, it takes the best out of a controller. However, my only complaint is that no matter what controller you have, if you play d-pad your thumb is gonna hate you.

have you tried the Pokken Tournament controller? its has a great D-Pad and is native for Switch
Also 8bito has the SN30 Pro Plus much improved D-Pad and my go to for the Switch , I mostly play Mario Maker which also requires a very accurate D-Pad just like fighting games and its the best ive used so far
Which version of the SN30 Pro + do you have? I have the SNES version and I still get incorrect inputs with it. For example, if I move the D-Pad left-and-right it sometimes inputs downward by accident!
@@AquaTwist_ I have the grey one with the red buttons
ValhallaOutcast Hmmm. Maybe I should return mine and get that version then? I heard that one doesn’t have any problems with the D-Pad.
Hey Nihongo, I always wondered why you didn't consider controller converters earlier since you've been collecting so many Arcade Sticks and controllers already.
if you're searching for a proper (native supported) DPad Controller for the Nintendo Switch, try the "Hori Pokken Tournament Pro Pad" (Wii U & Switch edition, both will work since they are internally identical). These share nearly the same DPad as the Fighting Commander (slightly mushier). Since the Pokken Pad has a 4 button layout with very large shoulder buttons, it resembles a modern SNES Controller (with comfortable handles and weirdly placed ZL and ZR buttons on the bottom, next to the right of Start and Select).
I would also recommend the new released "Hori Split Pad Pro" as an Handheld-only JoyCon replacement. The left Pad has the exact same DPad as the Pokken Pad, the feel of the buttons (size, amount of travel) and also - which is usually the biggest reason to buy them - proper Analog Sticks with a lot more travel than the small, unreliable JoyCon Analog Sticks (which also often suffer from Stick drifting). The DPad of Pokken and Split Pad Pro feels quite a bit better than the Hori DPad JoyCon because of the bigger size and bit more tactile feel. The Fighting Commander still is Horis best DPad, I'd say.
- Do you still play Street Fighter: 30th Anniversary Collection online on Switch?
8bitdo SN30pro+ for me for the d pad. but yeah that configuration of face buttons is something i would prefer
Sn30pro+ is the best
I got the Mayflash adapter for my Switch. It's way cheaper and works just as well. Also, my Fighting Commander is the Blazblue Special Edition!
Hori - a FGC player's Best Friend!
ahhh i really want that pad to play in my pc but it cost like 100 somthing euros in spain, its sooo expensive. if i ever go to japan im gonna buy that pad.
I bought two of these when they first came out and they are still going strong. Funny thing was play asia and other places use to sell them for 30 dollars and when they found out how good they were, the raised the price to 45 dollars due to the high demand.
In my humble opinion, Sega Saturn Model 2 Controller is still the BEST CONTROLLER for fighting games! It is the ONLY controller I use for ALL of my fighting games. Either I can use it, or I will not even consider playing the games if I can't use the Saturn pad.
Notice how he didn't try the double 360 for Zangeif...D pad buttons are too large and require wide circles, too steep and angled for pulling off 360 motions, and too stiff
Really like that you test controllers this way but I think super thorough as the best ways to find out if the controller can handle any game particularly the directional pad because that came had the hardest and plus I think the games that you were trying it out on your way simpler than that game in my opinion so if you could do it on super sale bro I could do it on any fighting game or any performer or anything else basically
Hori's Fighting Commander for Switch comes out this month.
Is the controller of this video being used on a n.switch?
What about input lag ?
And how is it for Smash Bros on Switch ?
Thanks for the video btw.
I'd imagine that for smash you'd be better off with a pro controller or game cube controller because having a stick for characters like fox or pikachu and you won't have a c stick for smashes or tilts
If it means anything, 8bitdo and Mayflash has their own adapters that not only cover PS4 controllers, not only cover more controllers from other consoles, not only cover more platforms(with the switch being the intended platform), but they also is around $20 and work beautifully.(Amazon has these controller converters)
well not really ideal for 8 button fighters, but there is a pokken tournament controller fightpad, and is the same controller that they used in the arcade.
Dont know if you noticed, but Hori listened and they made the same controller for the Switch.
Hey. I've watch most your videos, man. I love all your reviews. I was hoping if you could make a review about the new RAZER RAION FIGHTPAD. I'm planning to get one if it's available in the Philippines.
Can't wait to see a review on the new powerA fight pad 👍
Bought this 4 months ago. One of the d-pad directions stopped being responsive and the rubber underneath a button has a cut making it loosely jiggle around and get unintentionally pressed. Would of been a good controller if there wasn't major quality control issues.
Have you tried retrobit sega controllers?
GREAAAAT controllers! SEGA saturn is the best pad ever made. I have the Hori pas ad I can garanty that it not even close to SEGA retrobit one.😍!
They break easily, the Power A Fusion is better.
I second the fact that the Retrobit controllers break easily. My Saturn controller broke after 2 months
Well, I bought 3 of them (2 Saturn and 1 Genesis), and yes, they were the 2nd models, and they all were faulty. I'm sure some of them are good because the designs are the old SEGA designs and the Saturn D-pad is the best DESIGN ever, but yeah, HORI is killing it these days.
8bitdo's M30 is much better, its d-pad feels closer to the japanese Saturn controller.
Foe MMX you just need to set either dash or shoot to right button. That makes these moves doable. I could never dash jump and charge all on face buttons, that is three buttons at once but not all at the same time, tricky.
Can you play smash bros ultimate with that ?
I'm looking to play the game with D-pad, since Terry bogard has joined the roaster.
It's pretty hard to win only with taunts...
Since you can set the d-pad to left analog stick it should work, downside is you don’t have a c stick for flicks
VatX Vat well then in that case I’d just recommend a standard GameCube controller or one of the pdp GameCube style controllers (if you’re already using one of these just ignore me haha) as the notches around the left analog make using the command inputs much easier and more accurate
@@colbyboucher6391 I think since my question, I just trained so hard, that I just became stronger with adaptation. And I totally understand what you means
This controller has some iffy durability from what I've seen in reviews. I'd use the 8bitdo M30, it's cheaper and just feels amazing
For the Do it Yourself people. That controller is the easiest control to transform into a fight stick. The face buttons have nice big soldering points to attach wires to.
Hori does have a lot of Switch controller support, the FC4 is just older and they may not want to use that anymore on other consoles. I'm using mayflash adapters for my fighting stick needs.
Also, get the FC4 with adjustable D-Pad angle and tension.
I have the Retro Bit Sega Saturn USB controller and I play fighting games, arcade beat em up and shoot em ups with my fingers resting on the six face buttons and I don't usually have it resting on my lap. On any Playstation style controller if I play any Tekken or any Soul Calibur, I would have my fingers resting on the face buttons. If I was playing Soul Calibur II on a Gamecube controller, then I would hold the controller in the usual manner. Guilty Gear it depends on whether I play on a Playstation or Nintendo style layout or a Sega 6 button layout. Of course on an Arcade Stick, it would be a different story. For any fighting game with a 6 button layout like Capcom fighters or Skull Girls, I would use the Sega Saturn USB controller since I have access to all the punches and kicks on the face buttons. Retro Bit does have the Bluetooth and 2.4GHz controllers which both work on the Switch but I would get the Sega Saturn version of those since the Saturn controller looks easier to hold than a Mega Driver/Genesis controller. The 2.4GHz would probably give you less lag than the Bluetooth even if it is a small amount of difference in lag, it means a lot in fighting games and could lead you to a victory with a bit less lag. BrawlerGen has a USB Genesis/Saturn controller with bigger handles, meaning you can hold it easily with one hand and one analog stick and can work on a Switch and PC.
There are newer models of the fighting commander you voice used, I have the 4 and you can tilt the D pad
I like this layout specially because you can remap it to have all 3 punches or all 3 kicks pressed with only your thumb. I usually remap the top to be LK, LP, MP and the bottom to be MK, HK and HP. This way you get 2 small "triangles", one with punches and one with kicks.
Yeah I haven’t tried that but I was considering trying it!
Buying a Pokken controller for fighting games on the pc was one of the best decisions I've made. Having a good D-pad can make all the difference between enjoying a game or not.
I'm not too sure about the overall shape of the controller, doesn't look like too comfortable of a grip for long periods of play
8:22 that was so funny you said the wrong thing, i LOL'd in real life very hard & loud
thank you for making my day, kind stranger (;
Most Tekken pad players put the thumb under and use the index and middle for facebuttons. We call it the claw grip
put it on your knee and the 6 buttons are like your arcade stick just like the orginal streetfighter2 arcades. classic tekken arcades would only have 4 buttons making the transition from arcade to pad pretty natural on a playstion controllershoulder left can be used for the other 2 buttons that normally are macro commands in fighting games that can be done manually by pressing multiple buttons with your right hand.
I'm looking to get this controller soon, but heard that it can lose sensitivity after a while, would you still recommend it after a year?
If you have a chance to check it out I recently picked up the PowerA Fusion wired fightpad for Switch. I loved it enough to pick up the one for my PS4 as well. It’s close the Saturn design. It’s a little bigger, but the D-Pad is fantastic.
Yes, HORI has released an XBOX One/XSX/XSS version and a SWITCH version now!
This is the pad I use for tournaments. It’s honesty the best I could find for any fighting game.
Here's a tip. Set the controller so that you have lp mp hp and lk mk hk on the face buttons on the pad. With this pad, you can rest it on your lap and play that way. You're pressing the buttons in much the same way you press them in the arcade. Then when you switch to an arcade stick the change isn't as jarring.
This controller is my go to controller even prefer it over my fighting stick
I got that same controller as a Christmas gift to myself last year. Best fighting game pad I've ever had, changed my LIFE! 😂 Overemphasis aside, it's pretty awesome. Reminds me of the Street Fighter IV branded 6 face button controllers from Madcatz awhile back during the PSS3/X360 days and I loved those as well.
I have one of those hookups for using a Gamecube controller on my Wii U/Switch, but I also have this ridiculous old school piece that can hook up a PS2 controller to a Gamecube. I have, indeed, used both at once before. It feels a little ridiculous, but also pretty damn sweet.
Great video, good analysis. Could you do a review of the SN30 pro? It's a 3rd party controller from 8bitdo, d-pad on top, analog (both) on down. Looks like an upgraded Super Nintendo controller with triggers and grips. Costs 50 dollars, I'm thinking of buying one, since had analog drift from both joycon and pro controller.
I think you mean the SN30 PRO+. For me, the up and down bars on the D-PAD would often misread as a left or right input. It's unacceptable. I got a "MINI" Lite Controller from them and the D-PAD works perfect EXCEPT the controller itself is uncomfortable and the xyab buttons are too close together.
@@johnpolishimpossible2say191 I have one as well, sounds like a factory error bc my D-Pad for the SN30 Pro+ works perfectly. I switched from the Hori Fight Commander because I wanted to play on the switch.

The 8bitdo SN30 Pro and SN30 Pro+ actually feels great and if you have the nunchuck like Wii controller there is a SNES version from Hori which is wireless and only had the dongle for the SNES classic but if you plug in the dongle into a Wii controller and plug it into your Switch it would register.
