Move or Rearrange Your Hard Drive Partitions in Windows

  • For most hard drive formatting, partitioning and drive letter changing tasks you can use the built in Windows Disk Management utility. But if you need to do something like extend your system partition then you might not be able to if there is another partition between the system volume and the new disk space you have allocated to that hard drive.
Fortunately, there is a free tool called Niubi Partition Manager that will allow you to move your partitions to different locations, allowing you to do things such as extend your C drive with your new space. Just make sure to backup your data before running a tool like this just in case!
Here is a link to download the software

What a life saver you are! NIUBI saved me hours of aggravation in doing the task of moving unallocated space to where I could use it. I had 167.67 gigaybytes I wanted to move so I could allocate them to the C drive, but the damn Recovery Partition was in the way. It went slick! Took me all of 30 seconds to get the task done. Thanks so much! I wish all RUclips videos were so concise and straight to the point. You are to be commended. I'm subscribing now. - Richie

Amazing video! After cloning my M.2 to a larger size, discovered that the recovery partition is located between the boot partition and the unallocated volume. It took only few seconds to rearrange the partitions and claim the unallocated space. Thank you very much. This is a 5 stars video.

Worked for me! I cloned my MSI 15M SSD and had 2 partitions after the Windows partition that blocked me from increasing the size. Niubi free portable allowed me to move the partitions to the end of the drive after which I was able to expand the Windows partition to take up most of the new drive. Thanks a million!

I've done this sort of thing; it works fine. But the nuisance I've experienced is that diskpart's volume numbers (NOT volume ID's) did not change. In other words if I have three partitions, and swap the last two, the partitions would be numbers 1,2,3 in the physical order the partitions exist on the disk, but the *volume* numbers would be 1,3,2 as they were originally assigned when the partitions were created. diskpart's list vol shows items in volume number sequence, while list part shows them in partition number (physical) sequence. It's confusing and you really have to be careful. I haven't found a way to change the volume numbers but I'm still looking.
