Gotta say though, the Daleks mustve been hella confused when one of their own suddenly started ranting about some old egyptian god before killing them all.
I like how their search for rubys mother across time and space, turning the church into a fixed point, wove her into a legend, because Sutekh couldnt comprehend why Ruby would be so desperate to know the truth. Plus Osirans seem rather obsessed with plots, games and puzzles.
Ok the cloak thing should be explainable, she is in the middle of winter and she is trying to hide her identity as a teenage mother, It's weird to wear a cloak but i can understand the reason And the second thing i think the "because she important" is probably a mythic/spiritual thing idk since it's been there since the first episode and the 73 yards, idk i'm still learning the lore of Doctor Who, that's why i like watching everyone's reactions on what they think
You literally had the same reaction as me with the ‘grand’ reveal of Ruby’s mum all that build up from Christmas till now only to be some random normal human which than begs a bigger question why couldn’t Davina find her in the Christmas episode when they used Ruby’s DNA Also Sutek was massively underused in this episode and was than taken down to easy when you consider The Toymaker refused to play his games with Sutek Russel has has completely dropped the ball and I’m sick off these constant attacks at original Doctor who episodes
What I’m not loving is the fact it’s not just doctor who, they keep having to throw be who you are in everywhere, Bi this Bi that, be who you wanna be 100% but it’s being shoved in our faces a bit just to keep a minority happy and included.. it felt a lot more doctor who that some previous series have, but sometimes I cringed thinking why was that comment relevant to this show, they definitely needed a few more survivors for this ep so they could have a big showdown a bit like what Martha did maybe, this was to easy but I personally did enjoy it, hoping they ramp it up a bit next series, sad to say goodbye to ruby I loved her a lot more than I thought I would
I was prepared to be underwhelmed by the defeat of Sutekh because how can there be a satisfying solution to defeating what was the most powerful creature that ever lived. The fact that Rubys mother was an ordinary person to me was a plus it was certainly a twist no one saw coming. There are so many people that are deemed to be more than they are in real life. The one thing that made Sutekh the God of Death was is fear and paranoia that someone would take his thrown and to have it be some one that was no danger to him that he ended fearing most was brilliant IMO.
I think it would’ve been better if Rubys mum and the hooded woman were revealed to be two different people so she could’ve had a satisfying ending and we could’ve had a good mystery reveal
They didn’t stick the landing at all - Sutekh was defeated with a whistle & dog leash and the reveal of Ruby’s Mum was so disappointing - shame after last weeks excellent build up
Well maybe you could have given the production team about $50 million. Then they could have extended the season. It ended just fine. The Doctor finishes off the "bad guys" quick in every episode. And Ruby's Mom took all season to be revealed. Was NOT quick at all.
I think most of your criticisms are valid. I wasn't quite as disappointed as yourself but I do think it was a very weak episode. One thing that bothers me that I haven't seen addressed much is Ruby's arrogance when it comes to contacting her birth mother. Even though the Doctor specifically pointed out to her that her mother hadn't tried to find her for nearly twenty years. There could have been a very valid reason why she hadn't. Ruby ignores him and more or less confronts this unsuspecting woman. This is why this sort of thing is handled through third parties IRL. It can get very messy. Yeah, it paid off this time but is putting unfair expectations on people who didn't want to be parents through choice or circumstance. It may be too late as the second series is already recorded but I think RTD should take a step back, especially when it comes to writing. A whole generation of adults has grown up watching the revival era of the show. Perhaps, he should consider getting those younger experienced writers who are also modern fans to do more of the writing duties. Maybe even have a script editor like they used to have in the classic era who can provide some oversight and avoid the pitfalls this series has fell into.
See my expectations of New Who have been rock bottom for well over a decade, so this episode was just fine to me. But I can understand if people were hyping it up they'd be disappointed. Personally I see this as a very typical RTD finale, rubbish conclusion and all. But I enjoyed the lead characters and it had a few nice scenes.
Am I the only one not bothered about the cloak? I'll be honest, I never gave it a second thought, beyond it being an unusual piece of clothing. Does a cloak necessarily signify a supernatural entity, or were people simply investing too much thought into something so innocuous? Regardless, the other idea that Ruby was her own mother is a very silly one, and one that was done a lot better in Red Dwarf. Personally, the fact that Ruby's mum is an ordinary woman is perfect, as a super-special companion simply isn't that interesting; in my view, at least.
Yeah I saw a theory about that on twitter. It would definitely be better than what we got but it's still a season with a shit finale at the end of the day
This episode was amazing up until the doctor said death plus death is life. Then from that point, the dog leash (ok intelligent molecular bonding rope) then the doctor being a "monster", then rubys mum being ordinary. Just no... Hated it. As you say rubys mum being ordinary is actually really nice twist, but innthe cobtecf of the series it diesnt work. I guess its the opposite of clara, the twist is that ruby is just nornal. I feel like ive been trolled, it's too meta witn sutekh representing the fans, and the episode saying haha f u.
To your question, which I keep hearing, Why did the mother wear a cloak? Because there were CCTV cameras and dropping a baby off on a doorstep is abandonment and it’s a crime.
She's a 15 year old girl abandoning her baby while wearing a wizards cloak. She could very easily have done that wearing any other clothing that doesnt deliberately bait the audience into thinking she is a mystical character with an interesting sci-fi reveal. 15 year old girls don't have wizard cloaks. That kind of outfit would have made her more conspicuous than if she just wore normal clothes
@@MurkMoviesI just found out apparently she was never wearing a cloak and according to rtd time was protecting and cloaking her?? Which just makes this episode even worse for me
Basically, the entire season was garbage. Storyline was full of holes, and the acting was, at best, wooden. Gatwa couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag full of holes. Having watched the Dr since the mid 60s, this season has seen Dr Who thrown of a cliff into a bottomless cesd pit.
You have THAT problem most people have today. It all has to be your way. The writers put Ruby's Mom in a cloak because they wanted to. Sorry they did not ask you. But my guess is that you are not that important. Also, some people wear cloaks. Maybe she was returning from a local production of "Let's all wear cloaks tonight". I bet that is what happened.......... Prove me wrong! I love reactions. Yours was great. But when they turn into "rewrites". I lose interest.
so whatever the writers choose to write into the script is correct and nothing better could've been there in place of it? and i'm not allowed to make obvious critcisms about a piece of media? I don't see an issue with criticising the media. would you rather i just lied about the objective issues and subjective things that i don't like about the media i watch? and to clarify, it doesnt have to all be MY way. I would've been perfectly happy with elements of this episode being something i didnt expect if they weren't shit lol
RTD is the one who created a whole mystery around Ruby’s mother. The viewers were led down a garden path and the twist at the end is to say that “we” the viewers imputed meaning to the bizarre events (supernatural snow appearing; her mother wearing a cloaked outfit; the dramatic pointing at the road sign so the CCTV camera can be used to name her daughter. Why not leave a note in the basket?). Also the “god of gods; the god of death” is put on a leash and taken for walkies in the time vortex as a resolution? What sense does it make that killing the god of death brings life, how authorially convenient. We can criticise the fan-baiting and the deus ex machine resolutions when it is this bad.
Gotta say though, the Daleks mustve been hella confused when one of their own suddenly started ranting about some old egyptian god before killing them all.

Yeah compared to the other RTD finales this is the weakest one
Nah Last of The Timelords is the weakest by far.

I enjoyed the episode but the resolutions were so lame like how Sutekh got defeated so quick and Ruby's mum reveal
Davies has always been weak at endings, quick contrived explanations and all hype.

Men not understanding the point of Doctor Who twists because of lack of emotional inteligence should be genuinely studied bruv.
Explain what I don't understand 🫵
I'm a bit sad to say I really didn't like this episode. It kinda flopped everything for me.

Enjoyed your reaction. I sadly thought it was mostly garbage!
100% everything you said. So many holes and questions. So unsatisfying. Really lets what was otherwise a decent season down.
I think there's more to the story. Maybe it's a big fake out. Ruby could be the 15th doctor story arch....
Yeah I saw a theory about that on twitter. It would definitely be better than what we got but it's still a season with a shit finale at the end of the day
