The Enemy of the World being the next story is such a big jump in quality overall from Abominable and Ice Warriors. Let alone the back to back really good stories to come after Enemy of the World

A classic example of a story that would have worked better as a 4 parter. The warriors themselves are realised well, but the B plot about heartless machine-like people vs those with independence and instinct, goes on way too long and doesn’t grab me!

"work 2 hours a day" .. yeah would be maybe possible if we didn't hat capitalism and consumerism and instead would use all the tech just so that people have to work less instead of let them produce more and more shit that is only needed to make the riches richer.

These 60's stories are really meant to be watched one episode a week. They don't really work as binge watches. They were only ever broadcast one time only, so there had to be recaps and reminders in the story, as well as catch ups for those who had missed an episode. Perhaps a re edit would work better for modern viewers?

I enjoy this story, but it is odd that they had three icy/snowy stories in a row. Also the Ice Warriors are a very similar concept to the Cybermen, except that they’re still emotional. But the story has a strong theme of nature v technology that is threaded well through the characterisation and the alien concept and design.

The four film episodes were rediscovered in 1988, In a building in England. In the autumn of 1990, I was at College, here in my native Ohio _I had two friends who were fan of Who (episodes were shown on our PBS channel -the surviving episodes of Hartnell and Troughton were shown here in 1986; video record at home; only stories from Season Six were the Troughton package, the surviving random were not for viewing) So, my friends who were Who, found through a "contact" a guy who had a video copy of the four Ice Warriors recovered. The video we had to go watch at this Guy's house, off campus, one time view, no chance to copy the video,....Ok, deal. The tree of us went, two of us were Troughton fans, helped by the Target novels. This was the first view of Season 5, had seen,....two years before the return of "Tomb of the Cybermen"! The video of this had a burned-timecode, and the image was at least a generation down - yet amazing to view! The offical VHS tape didn't get released until 1998, with a 15 minute telesnap/audio version of episodes 2-3, and a great documentary "The Missing Years". While this story doesn't get as much praise by some fans, for nostalgia, seeing the bootleg, I am a fan.

I do love the idea of a stately home with wood panelling and posh doors being kept in a protective dome in a future ice age where the glacier-monitoring team are stationed and invaded by ancient de-frosted Martians and a time-travelling alien with his 18th century piper and Victoria lady companions. Very Doc Who. Though who knew Victoria was packing continental-racism (...)

Fun fact: the Ice Warrior leader, Varga, was played by comedy actor Bernard Bresslaw, who appeared in 15 of the 31 Carry On film series, usually playing the thick but lovable side kick to his mate, Sid James. Bresslaw was no doubt cast in this part due to his 6’ 7 height and his big frame, which works brilliantly when paired alongside the much smaller Patrick Troughton. This story was written by Brian Hayles and the comparison between it and the film, “The Thing from Another World,” (1951) is obvious, with men working at a base in freezing arctic conditions, uncovering a spaceship buried for thousands of years under the ice, then finding and thawing out an alien creature who soon realises that to survive the “kill or be killed” dictum must come into play. I agree with you about the 2nd half of this story being less slower than the first half, but IMO it’s still a Doctor Who classic. The Ice Warriors, with their deathly soft whispering voices and their wonderful reptilian costume design are simply fantastic Doctor Who monsters. Add to this another ‘base under siege’ scenario with the entire world at peril if the Doctor fails, and you have all the ingredients of a perfect Troughton Doctor Who story.

When this story was produced, the general consensus was that we were heading for a mini ice age. That is what we were taught in geography O level in the 70s anyway....

Venkman in the first scene is trying to sleep with the blonde girl , its to show hows he's scummy and doesnt actually take the paranormal stuff seriously like Ray and Egon

I read the novel of Abominable Snowmen as a kid and loved it- but it was faster-paced with better effects... V cool seeing someone watch Classic Who without knowing the stories already. The 6-parters drag less when it's the original live action bc Troughton is so great to watch. Next season is peak-Jamie/2 bromance [chef's kiss] but Web of Fear is some of 2 at his finest...

I liked the peas joke however I also think the chibnall era is canon. Any future production team can though change it for better or worse. Great setting for this story. The yeti were very popular and were frightening to me as four and a half year old boy back in 1967.

The Chibnall series is fine it's just different which is what the shows always been about.

It's a great story i'm but not a fan of the animation and making things up in the animation for cultural sensitivities instead of making it accurate to what the original episodes would had looked like.

60s Doctor Who usually ran to around 40 episodes a season, or 9 months of the year, so filling that number of episodes with 2, 3 or 4 part stories would mean the show’s producer and script editor having to come up with lots more stories than the 7 or 8 (on average) number that was in seasons 1-6. Another reason for longer episodes was the cost. Until 2005, when the show was brought back, Doctor Who’s budget for a season was pretty poor. When you factor in the number of sets, costumes and location shoots for each individual story (excluding actor fees), it’s much more cost effective to provide all of that stuff over 6 or 7 episodes, than it would be over 4 episodes. An example would be the monastery set in this story. The cost of building it would be the same, whether it featured in 4 or 6 episodes, so the longer the story, the better the budget has been used to gain another 50 minutes of television, for the same cost. Another reason for longer stories is that sometimes 1 or maybe 2 stories would fall through, during the writing stage. When that happened, those X number of episodes still had to be filled to give the BBC the already agreed 40 episodes a season. Sometimes those episodes could be filled with other stories that were previously abandoned (for any number of reasons) but which are suddenly dusted off and used, but which might be altered by the script editor to add something they want. Sometimes when there wasn’t any new stories to fall back on, existing stories were re written to make them longer to fill those episode gaps! Season 6 of classic Who was a very troubled season for all of that, with stories falling through, etc. and 4 of the 7 stories were affected. These stories had episodes which were reduced or extended to fill the quota of episodes required to fill an entire season.

I think the lack of any incidental music in this story really adds to the drag factor. It definitely should have been a 4 parter. I also think the story would benefit from it actually surviving for a start.

Originally, when Padmasambhava died at the end, they were going to have an effect where his face would melt away off his skull, but when the director, Gerald Blake, saw the finished effect, it was decided that it was too gruesome for them to use, so the footage was destroyed.

This was quite a special story for Deborah Watling, because the actor who plays Professor Travers was her father Jack Watling.

The location filming was in Snowdonia, Wales, Filmed in late Summer, over a week. Snowdonia is a wonderful location,....yet, now snow, as you can see in the one episode. The animation, they can do as they want. The actors playing the Monks, were all British -this animation does make the Monks Asian; justice.

Of course the main Tardis sound effect is unchanged-the BBC spent good money on that back in 1963, so they’d hardly throw it away after just 60 years… 😉

16:52, Sadly, no. Besides, while the show did come out the same year as ‘Ghostbusters’ over here in the U.K, it didn’t reach the U.S until 1989, plus I doubt the original books were a thing over there.

No, the ending: someone from spain on behalf of the roman vatican is attempting to develop a vaccine via an isolated enzyme specimen, as a girl (patient zero) became possessed by Satan. For some reason, she was able to infect others via saliva, and have them turn into possessed minions. The church and this scientist were trying to resolve the situation, and kept patient zero sealed somehow in the penthouse.
