  • Chrissie Watkins' fatal shark encounter's is one of, if not, the best opening scenes in movie history. It is a classic example of less is more. When Susan Backlinie (Chrissie Watkins) passed away earlier this month at the age of 77, The VFX team at CKVFX put their skills to use and created a CGI updated version as a tribute to Susan and her terrifying scene.

Pretty cool but it works so much better when you don't see it. That unseen force of nature is truly terrifying. Bruce constantly malfunctioning was the greatest filming mishap to ever happen that turned a typical monster movie into a classic that I would argue is one of the top films ever made in ANY genre. That was brilliantly done. It looks great. I consider it a good "what if", but agree that the way things were done in the existing movie are perfect, and should stay as they have been for the last 49 years. The VERY talented Mrs Backline's performance sold the hell out of that scene, and that's what made it the cultural juggernaut that it is. If she had not sold it as well, or was in the hands of a lesser actress, the movie would not have been as successful. And, watching the interviews she's done in the years since that movie, she was, in my opinion, very sweet and likeable, and has always looked back on it with fondness. It's an unfortunate loss to the world, but her star will be shining brightly down on us from the heavens. She will always be a major part of cinema history. The only bad thing I can say about her is, back in 1975, when I was 8, and saw the movie in the cinema, SHE GAVE ME NIGHTMARES FOR MONTHS.!!!!

This was great. A combination of the book and movie. TBH, the Book's description is terrifying in its own right.
First he detects her...he glides just beneath her, raising her up in the water and slowly back down..he comes up to the surface, his dorsal fin cutting through the water before sinking back into the darkness... Chrissie suddenly becoming frightened (after he passes beneath her) the quick and sudden bite, her terror of discovering her leg is gone and finally the massive body rising from the black with her in his mouth and then slamming back down.

Of course we all wouldn’t change a thing about the original opening scene but I enjoyed seeing another take on it. The original has to be the most iconic opening scene ever from a movie. I had the honour of meeting Susan once at a jaws convention and I actually got emotional 😂😂 this iconic figure I grew up with on tv and there she was in to a flesh. Absolutely remarkable performance that STILL gives me goosebumps to this day after what must be 200 times I’ve seen the movie. Thank you for posting this. My favorite movie of all time. To me, the best movie ever. #1. Thanks to JAWS, Spielberg became my favorite director and I his big fan. And JAWS became my favorite movie. I met Spielberg March 1986 at academy awards inside Dorothy chandelier pavilion on stage after ceremony and talked to him for awhile. He is my fav. I always wanted to meet Backlinie. Never did. I’ve seen JAWS like over 40 times. First December 1975 at theater #3 sunrise mall, massapequa, Long Island, New York. Own every issued version: on laserdisc (CLV, CAV)-DVD (regular, collectors, etc)-bluray-4K. In summer 1973-1974-1975: I used to swim way the hell out - so far that could hardly see people on the beach/shore. Was tiny dots. After seeing JAWS in December 1975: never again. Especially now with all the sharks coming up near shore-beach NOW. Don’t go to beach anymore. And if do, ever do, don’t go in water or just up to waist. I did meet Richard Dreyfuss at 1986 academy awards: asshole; saw him inside Chandler pavilion and outside, and said HELLO. He just looked, ignored and annoyed. Hate Dreyfuss after that. Especially after what he said lately. But love ❤️ Spielberg. Own the soundtrack of JAWS on vinyl record. I did spoof of jaws in high school in 12th grade for filmmaking class at pool. Read the book too. MOVIE “MAKO: JAWS OF DEATH” showed real sharks with actual people, like when shark bites down on leg of female in the pool scene. They used real sharks in that. And also in TINTORERA: TIGER SHARK movie. Real sharks.

It loses so much momentum and suspense every time the shark is shown (if anything you may get away with a quick, and very shadowy glimpse of the shark ONCE that you question if that’s what you saw in the first place - establishing shot). Just shows how powerful the final scene ended up being. Great animation by the way. I’m just very happy the original idea had to be worked around and we got the complete suspense without seeing the shark at all. Spielberg pulled a rabbit out of the hat.

Obviously I think it worked better leaving stuff to the imagination but you really had to suspend disbelief quite a bit because a lot of the motions and such that she was being dragged, there's just no way that that could have happened without you seeing a shark that big. Obviously it's a movie and it worked out amazing like this but if a massive shark is working its way up a tiny woman's legs there's going to be parts of it coming out of the fucking water. Lol. But you did a good job of lining up the bites with the movement in a way that was plausible. And it was still really disturbing. I always liked how she's begging God to save her. But in a situation like there's nothing that is going to save you that you could potentially even give credit to a god for. Nothing will stop your death now. And that's how the real world is too. She did an absolutely phenomenal job. And the only film with an opening scene that I like more than this is scream. This shit is truly terrifying

Bruce was never scheduled to be used for any of Jaws until July 1974 out at sea for the Orca based scenes.
The beach attack scenes were filmed in May and June. The first scene involving the shark to be filmed was the pier/holiday roast scene, filmed in late May. They didn't even know Bruce was going to malfunction until late June.
The shark was hidden on purpose for the first half of the film. Spielberg was a suspense director, as Duel and Something Evil proves.
      Cheers.

It reminded me, unfortunately, of the 2023 attack on a Russian man in Egypt; a tiger shark ripped the guy apart and it was all captured on camera. The shark flipped him upside down, lunged out of the water and bit down on him hard, over and over. In 1975, no one knew what Great White sharks acted like- Shark Week wasn’t invented yet. So even though Spielberg’s intro was more Hitchcockian, your version ends up being more realistic in that the shark WOULD in fact be seen on the surface in an actual attack.

@@OffBeatLondon101 I think my perspective was just different to most. I loved sharks before I saw jaws so not showing it just frustrated me. Especially when they told us and showed it on the cover. But each to their own I think. Still amazing movie regardless

They already filmed the holiday roast/pier scene and the Kintner attack scene before they even knew Bruce would malfunction. Bruce was never scheduled to be used in either scene, nor the Chrissie attack.
Sure, early in the storyboarding but not after the design of Bruce was finalised and built. The water was way too shallow. They didn't even want to use the perfectly working fin contraption until the pond scene.

He never planned to use Bruce. Even Susan Backlinie said the original plan was to use an electric winch but she asked for man power.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the feedback. I animated the shots here and it was always a "if the shark had worked what might it be like" moment and we thought we'd share the idea. BUT Susan was brilliant and didn't need it. So while it was a fun experiment the film did it best.

This edit was honestly a garbage heap of wrong decisions. You took a classic, near PERFECT film and thought you could improve it......and successfully made it worse than "Sharknado". Congratulations on your hubris. Leave it TF alone unless you gain a Spielberg level vision. What next....Citizen Kane? I CAN"'T WAIT. You will probably turn the sled into a jet-ski......

Seeing the shark, it actually detracts from rather than enhances the scene. Was interesting though.

I swear this opening scene scared the shit out of me ´ when I was a boy and never took a midnight bath elsewhere than in a swimming pool or my bathtub ☝️
I particularly loved the interview where she explained they attached a cable to her ankle but didn’t tell or intentionally forgot to tell her when they would pull her under water so her surprise would be total and it did work and afterwards she was told to throw her arms to the left when pulled to the left and to right when pulled to the right ‘ this scene is hell of a genius and she nailed it 💯 perfectly ´ best opening scene ever
Jaws is and will remain a masterpiece and without Chrissie opening the movie it wouldn’t have been the “Jaws “ ❤️ 🦈 🎥

The visual of the shark doesn't add anything to the scene, in fact it detracts from the intensity of this sequence. Speilberg's setup--the quiet serenity of the swim--contrasts starkly with the violence of the attack. Clearly something large and powerful has a hold of Chrissie and our imagination is left to fill in the blanks of that which we do not see. So many similarities between this scene and the shower scene in Hitchcock's Psycho: a nude, solitary bather assaulted by a deadly yet indistinct attacker. Classic and gripping still nearly 50 years on.

The first bite with the shark's jaws added made me jump ---and I've seen this film countless times. I would have cut back a little bit on the rest, but I like that you kept it zoomed in on the sharks mouth with her in it. I do think it is scarier seeing those teeth biting her. It complements Susan's brilliant acting very well. Nice job!
