My best tip: If I am unsure if I should de-clutter an item, I wear it to work that week. By the end of the day it has become clear if I like it or don't. Almost always I de-clutter it. If you don't know you love it more than likely you shouldn't keep it!
That's a great idea! I am going to try that soon for the things I wear less often.
That's an excellent tip! You don't even have to suffer through a day at work, I will often just wear an item for a short walk and it becomes clear why I don't wear it and I can let it go.
Yes! I do that too! I make myself wear it, then if becomes obvious why I never wore it before haha!
Wow this is great!
Wow... this is the tip that I need to declutter my clothes.
I've decluttered my closet 3 times so far. There's one blouse I got in Italy that is special because of where I bought it. I've only worn it once in 6 years. Today I put it on again, and took it off. Today I am going to part ways with this blouse after reading from a commenter "Would I buy this right now". The answer is no. Arrivederci blouse!
That is awesome!
I liked when you said “ Let your style evolve”. This is such a hard thing as we grow older. We see ourselves in a certain style ….
I truly enjoyed your video and I laughed so much when you showed the video clip with your mom. Such fun! Great video, Shannon.
Thank you Ann! I completely agree it can be hard to realize our style has evolved. But I think its ok to embrace the fact that we are allowed to change our style or our size for that matter. =)
Yes! We evolve!! I gave away this pink beach dress last year and was regretting it just now because I now have to buy a replacement for our upcoming belated honeymoon. But you know what? I hate pink! Especially on me, it washes me out. I got the dress for free and used it. But the one I'm going to replace it with something of my taste today.
I love wearing dresses in summer. Have lots of sundresses but I only keep 4 dressy dresses. Two dark for funeral...1 for summer, 1 for winter. And 2 for weddings or other celebrations. 1 for summer, 1 for winter. I dont have a lot of room but have a huge extended family. So fortunately weddings happen often, unfortunately funerals also happen often.
"Would you buy this again" is a good question to ask yourself. I like your process! Thanks.
That is a great question to ask!
I love your hair 😍😍😍
Thank you! I hope you have a nice day =)
Quickly becoming one of my favorite minimalism channels 🤍
Yay! Thank you!
For "fantasy clothes" I made myself wear them. Then I could see if I actually liked them or not. I either ended up with a cool piece that I actually loved or I felt no guilt at all about letting it go. Often the fantasy clothes turned out to be uncomfortable or not suited to my lifestyle as a preschool teacher & Mom of a young kid. Now I know!
I really like the way you always put a different spin or angle on how to minimize or get organized. Other videos get very repetitive. I always learn something fresh, new and beneficial from you! Much appreciated.
Awesome! Thank you!
I sure appreciate your presentation. Just a good pace and voice level…some youtubers create disturbing drama and loud voices to get attention. Also, appreciate that you don’t play music! This was so informative, I really appreciate enjoyed your ideas. Thanks for the inspiration!
Wow, thank you!
Lots of great tips in the video! I would add that you may not need to get the stuff from the laundry before you start as you already know those things are things you actually wear (unless you wore them and didn’t feel great in them then you can possibly let them go after they are back out of the laundry)
Great tip!
The revisiting is what I do. I also pay attention to how I feel when I put on each item of clothing. If I don’t feel awesome in. If I don’t feel awesome I don’t reach for it.
I agree revisiting your wardrobe over and over helps so much! I hope you have a great day.
When I found my style it was easy to throw out everything that didn't align with that style. A RUclipsr called Marie Anne Lecouer really helped me develop more of an eye for what suits me. Now, everything in my wardrobe is what I wear and love.
Love Marie-Anne’s channel🙂
Pretend you're moving to a different country. What clothes would you take? It also works for decluttering items other than clothes.
I love that idea! Since I have moved to another country I know that does work.
I did just that, but it wasn't exactly pretend - I moved to the US, "lived" there for a month and came back to Brazil. A very expensive, somewhat stupid way to declutter, but it was very effective.
Actually this is a great idea! Definitely trying it!
The best time for me to declutter & organize my closet is when i'm way behind on the laundry. All my everyday keepers are in there (in the laundry room) so all thats left in the closet & drawers is stuff that doesn't get used and needs some purging.
I have a fear of not affording to replace what I get rid of.
So I pretended and gave myself a simple budget each month and saw I could easily buy more then what I needed for my life right now. I also noted places I could go to get discounts on nice items.
I think its a good idea to ask oneself… what am I afraid of right now?
Then combat it, because there is nothing to be afraid of.
Much better way of decluttering thank you. I can’t do this in a rush , it’s taken me a month so far but it’s working for me. 😊
That is awesome!
I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one who has a bridesmaid dress hanging in my closet. I’m ready to let it go!
If you know a teenager it fits, they can use it for a costume. I gave away a dress like that and she used it for a prom!
Appreciated dear for tips I am grateful that for 2 years back I faced Tins of cloth for my kids then I asked did I am alone face this problem?then started search and I founded one of your videos support me since that I founded time to do it clutter now I have all my cloth in one location as well same my husband and kids.thank for support
I pull out only 5 to 10 items at a time. It’s less overwhelming, and if I’m interrupted, I am not left with a big mess. My favorite questions: Does this fit within 2 sizes? Do I feel good in this? Would I buy this right now? Do I have something similar? If I regret getting rid of it, is it replaceable?
Great Questions!
Hi ....I am from Nevada and I am new to your channel 😊
The one thing I do to help me with my closet is I turned all my hangers around. Now as I wear my clothes I put them in the normal way. Every June I go through and take out everything that didn't get worn and turn all the hangers around again to start over.
That is such a great idea, I like to do that too especially when I first started decluttering.
Thank you Shannon! This is excellent practical advice!!!
One of the BEST examples of How To tackle our closets!!! Thank you for this!
Raven
I've found if I try everything on, even if I think I want it, I can get rid of more clothes. It's surprising what no longer suits you or looks frumpy or no longer my style.
My problem is always going up and down in sizes. I am working on shrinking again, (WW), so I am going through my closet again and just packing up the smaller sizes. It makes me sad to see them right now, so I am packing them up. If I decide to wear them again, I will get rid of larger sizes as a shrink (hopefully) & pull from the bins for smaller sizes again.
This is such a great idea!
I so relate to this! I usually gain weight before and during winter and then shed during Spring and summer, the difference being around 20 pounds... I only accepted this recently at 42, I guess that is my destiny. I therefore keep clothes from size 6 up to 12... Wonder if any of you experience sth like that. Not so good for skin, belive me...
Just what l needed to see today thanks
Glad to help
Your last tip, if you take it off don't hang it up again there was a reason you took it off. Great tip I am very guilty of hang it back up thinking I will wear it next time but I don't.
I just found your channel and this video is just what I need to hear! I love the idea of taking out your favorite/most loved items first. I’m doing this tonight!!
Thanks Shannon, our closets are for sure one of the harder areas to tackle. For me, After the easy obvious gotta goes, I now switch all my hangers backwards for the upcoming 2 seasons. When I wear it and want to keep it, it goes on front facing hanger. If not, out it goes. It really works and is super easy.
So true!
Great idea to go back and declutter, sometimes it can be so overwhelming
Yes it really can especially if it's the first time ever decluttering. =) I hope you have a great day.
Great advice and tips. I did have my wardrobe pretty well figured out; until we moved to a State with 4 seasons, including very hot summers, and snow in the winter. Take a bit more seasonal clothing. One tip I have done on items I am afraid I will regret decluttering, is to pack them in a box or tote, and label. If you didn't miss or get into that box to retrieve anything in 6 months, donate or recycle.
That's a good idea Jan! Living in a state with 4 seasons is a lot harder than a place that really has 2 seasons.
I would sometimes hang onto items that weren't my style anymore. The reason is...I feel youthful, but in reality I'm not. Lol. I wish I could pull off the same look I had in my 30's. But sadly, nope. And I don't want to feel like I have to wear clothing that looks older than I feel. Does that make sense?
I don't have a huge wardrobe, but I only declutter small amounts at a time. Just in case I end up with nothing to wear. But actually it's still items I don't reach for.
This spring I bought myself several new items. I felt like I just had to embrace the size I'm in now. It has made a huge difference when I open the closet door.
Love all your videos! And I agree with another commenter...your hair is beautiful, you look so youthful with your hair that length.
Enjoy your day!
I completely agree with what you said about age and clothes. I finally decluttered some really short shorts LOL. It just felt like it wasn't right for my age and I rarely wore them because of that. Thank you for being here! I hope you have a great day.
@Taniayoungson you’re right These are all great tips! I do t call it declutter. I just call it getting rid of stuff I don’t like it use for various reasons. That way it’s not a big chore. If you want more style advice and the encouragement to do that for yourself check out Christie Ressels channel and podcast. She is a professional stylist in Canada. It will change the way you think about these things. She is truly inspirational, and at the same time practical. Really incredible!
Very useful video. Love your character and approach to minimalism. Love you Mom videos too.
Thank you so much!
Great advice! My favorite tip was the one about visualizing the final result :)
Glad it was helpful! I hope yo have a nice day.
Wonderful video Shannon! I'm new to your channel and I feel that I hold on to my past with all the clothes I've accumulated. I'm trying to declutter and will try your novel approach to pick out what I love to wear first! This makes total sense as I over think my decisions and then become frustrated. Then nothing gets declutter. Thank you for your uplifting and inspiring video!
Thank you for all the great tips! Your video inspired me to finally get rid of my blouses. Everytime I wore them I felt matronly! Off topic here but your hair is so beautiful!
That is great! Thank you and I hope you have a nice week.
@@shannontorrens1 Thank you wishing you a nice week as well!
You just gave me an idea and I was able to save a dress I liked that the top part was ruined fromwear. I made into a skirt just by cutting of the top part.
That's a great idea!
Hi! Can you make a hair care routine video? Would love to see how you keep it minimal and how you keep your hair looking so great!
Great idea!!
Since Friday, four tees, socks, undies, and one pair of jeans have left the premises! I have an easy time being minimal with personal items, except dishes! I treasure my dishes! Did I say how much I love your Mom?
Thanks for sharing!! I hope you have a great day =)
Great, new tips! I’m going to try this!
Have fun!
Your hair is absolutely gorgeous 😍
Thank you so much 😀
I declutter every now and again, but it's amazing to see how much I still have left. >.< It's definitely an ongoing process, and each time I get rid of things that I might have chosen to keep the last time. Some items just weren't needed anymore and I occasionally think back to them, but with most I was glad to let them go. I love seeing a bag full of things that are no longer taking up unnecessary space in my life, some which will be enjoyed by someone else!
I'm also careful with what I buy, making sure my new clothes will be worn often and actually match clothes I already have.
Very good points. Have to say that ur hair looks so thick n beautiful. Please do an updated video on the kitchen. Thank u for ur valuable advice.
Thank you! Will do!
I was just thinking something motivating is what items would you sell to get that dream piece or thing you want? Those are the items you don’t really want.
Great video Shannon....
Thank you Cynthia!
Hey Shannon, great suggestions! I am due for a closet clean out here soon. This is the toughest place for me to be minimal!! I want to be more ruthless this time around!😊🙌✨
You got this!
This was excellent really helpful thanks 💖 btw you look younger & prettier now than in some of your early photos 💖💝
Oh thank you! I hope you have a wonderful day =)
I think it’s the absence of the bangs.
Love your videos and content!! 😀
Thanks so much Katie! I hope you have a nice day.
I needed this,, its so hard for me to get rid of stuff,,TFS😊😊😊
Thank you Madi! I am so happy this was helpful, feel free to share it with anyone you think it could help =)
I also find it hard to get rid of stuff. But I have been training my decluttering muscles and it gets easier. I keep getting rid of items. I donate and recycle as much as possible. Do take a before picture!
Great video
Thanks for the visit
I’m the first like, at work love 💕 these kind of video
Yay! Thank you!
I go through my closet every 6 mos and y whatever I haven’t used on a long time I donate
Great idea!
I'm good at diclattering my problem is excessive shopping.
Off topic but your hair is looking beautiful.....I’m jealous.😊💖
Oh thank you!
Have you ever thought about using the free dryer...the sun..a clothesline is wonderful...using a dryer actually beats your clothes...that is where lint comes from.
I hang all my clothes.
Do you have only current season clothes in your wardrobe
Yes I have many videos on how I switch out my wardrobe. I like to only see what I will be wearing that season. It removes all the visual clutter.
Any tips for the “I’ll wear this after I lose weight”?
One thing I will add to this thought is I have been there and lost the weight and still didn't wear it LOL. So I like to really question if and when I will lose the weight and if I will actually wear it.
Ruffles, pleats, pelmets, frills put in one pile. Discern. Anything floral put in one pile. Discern. Vag and get rid of. Then gently forgive yourself and surrender to the new choices whilst bathing with salt in your bath water. Let it go. Let it be. Cycle of accumulation shall continue.
❤️🌻
Hi Mary! I hope you have a nice day.
Lol she looks better older now; than then 😂
Haha You are funny! I think its just what I was wearing in those clips LOL
Put all your hangers back the front in the wardrobe. Then anything still back the front a year later - get rid of it !
Красивые длинные волосы! Красивая женщина! В доме порядок и уют! Лайк!
Thank you! I hope you have a good day! =)
Stop buying so much stuff in the first place.
Good for you =)
