I decluttered one room at a time, once I was finished and I knew what I did n didn’t want but didn’t know were to put the keeps. I put it in my spare room. One side keep other side throw, which meant once I was throwing out I ended up throwing out some keeps too. So brilliant job done.
Your advise : not to organize while decluttering is excellent, it was my weakest point, also staying in one area especially since you might be interrupted . thank you so much Shannon, I needed this tuneup .
I remember keeping a tea set for years after a friend gave it to me and never using it. A few years ago, I gave it away as a wedding gift. The recipient was thrilled as it matched her wedding color theme! And we saved money that we would have had to shell out as a cash gift. We only do cash gifts so someone can just use it wisely.
I would feel terrible if someone ever had the impression they were obligated to keep all my gifts to them. Sometimes I don't even know specifically what someone might want, but I just wanted them to know I was thinking of them. Lately, I go mainly with desserts, flowers, or something else consumable... as in visitors, not tenants! 😜
Same. I'm a strong supporter of regifting as well. As a teen, we regifted so much, we'd sometimes accidentally regift a gift to the person who gifted it to us 🤣 it was all good laughs though
I actually think I prefer the opposite of 6. I prefer to have 2 bins out for stuff, one for donations and one for things I want to try and sell. And then of course a bag for trash. I find that I’m less likely to go through the things I’ve decluttered if I organize them right away, rather than having to go through them a second time.
Shannon, your videos are the best and I hope you get many more subscribers - people need your help! My husband and I are seniors who have done a lot of minimalizing, but we still want to do more. I do have a problem with handbags and jewelry because accumulating them has helped me deal with pain over the years. I could have sold so many of these items before, but I don’t have the physical ability to get that done now. Looks like we’ll end up donating several thousand dollars worth of items accumulated over a lifetime. I guess the lessons here are: Never assume you will remain healthy, able bodied or financially comfortable. Figure out the amount of stuff that is actually workable for you to own. Don’t bring more stuff into your home than is workable for you. Deal with the excesses of your life before you no longer can. Think of unburdening your survivors from your stuff when you’re gone.
It took me eight years during 3 serious stroke to throw out most things his mother and father accumulated over 65 years. Also we cared for invalid father for 12 years prior. My advice does keeping an item make more work. Decluttering takes time. Eight years went by in a blink. In your late fifties and early sixties you will face many life challenges the last thing you need is too many pie plates and muffin tins. At that age you are better off to sell them for health reason and use the money for a pair of walking shoes and a bag of salad veggies items you would not regret purchasing. Reclaim your health put on those walking shoes sell.you junk and downsize before you are 6 foot under. This whole decluttering thing happens because women are responsible for everyone's happiness in the home. Why are men not involved in decluttering . Or for that matter cleaning the house. This happens all over the world women are the caretakers of material objects. Do not wasteful spend your money on stuff. Men do not have the patience or desire to help maintain it. Just saying. Reality will hit at about 50. Why didn't some one warn me that my healthy lifestyle is not protection in old age. You do not have the same energy at 55 and 65 that you do at 35 or 45 and you dont have 20 years to figure it all out. Do not collect or accept castoff things. from other people. It is not pleasant to find a use for it. Speaking honestly that amounted to twenty years of hard work. My husband could not help his parents out he had to work. After you are obligated to take this on everyone forgets that's how you lived your life and spent your time. Beware.
I so agree with "don't feel bad!" The way I see it, it'll only get harder to part with items when these unwanted items (especially gifts) earn their seniority. Then it'll feel like getting rid of memories of deceased family members. Do it now when they are healthy and alive!!!
Great tips. I did the one room until done at a time. My system was to do my regular run through of morning chores so my house was straightened up, kitchen clean; then started with the declutter of one room at a time, even if it took more than one day. It did take longer to declutter the whole house, but was pretty much stress free.
You are SO right! Nothing is truly wasted as long as it is being used, no matter who paid for it. I am a new subscriber and am really enjoying your channel, especially the ones with your mom and when you helped a friend declutter their space.
Great suggestion to try really hard to not multitask. One thing at a time with intent and focus goes so much more smoothly. I do like to have background music playing to set the mood. Thanks for all your great shares Shannon!
Great video. Decluttering my garage today...again! These tips have come in handy as a reminder. My older son moved out months ago so I will be boxing his things then he can go through it himself. Keep making these great videos Shannon. You are my favourite minimalist on RUclips.
Thanks for the advice.. so difficult not to move to another area while I'm busy in one room. It's much more easier for me to know what I'm going to do with all the decluttered things before I start. Always dropping it off at a local charity shop
Another point to make is not to feel guilty about getting rid of something a family member gave to you that doesn't fit into your lifestyle. Or, holding on to an item a departed loved one gave to you. We can have emotional ties to things and, in my experience, those are the hardest to let go of when downsizing. Your heart will tell you when it's time to let it go. My friend gave me the idea to taking a picture of the item to go back and remember my loved one by.
Great ideas! I appreciate your segments about helping your mom declutter... I’m probably close to her age and am also in the process of decluttering my home. ~ Maria
It is impressive that you learned to live on one income. I was encouraged to do that when my kids were young, but I did not do it completely. It always seemed like I should work, so I did. Thank you for sharing your journey to minimalism. 🙂
These tips are tremendously helpful. My house is a disaster because I’ve been doing all the things you say not to! 😂 I will implement your ideas right away. Thank you! You have earned a new subscriber. 🥳😉
I'm highly impressed about the reality and the survey you took in a very systematic matter to put forth this content. it has taken gigantic efforts, yes.! many thanks for this.
Love Nbr 3! You give such wonderful tips! Thanks for sharing your insights. These gems of wisdom helps! I’ve set a goal to work on my kitchen/dining area through the Summer. Then I’ll tackle my son’s room.
I love all these videos Shannon! I’ve already decluttered my space but I’m watching these for tips to help my mom at her house. So much stuff to go through!
I'm a new subscriber and I would like to thank you for a precise. thorough and informative direction to take when decluttering. I have been overwhelmed but you have truly helped me. Take care and stay safe👍
Thanks Shannon. Great ideas., especially the one about not feeling bad. We do feel bad when we’ve spent money on something that doesn’t get used. Hope to see your mom in a video soon. 😊
I love your content Shannon! Congratulations on your success with your decluttering your home looks extremely peaceful like a vacation home but more cozy! That must feel so good I'm sure you put in a lot of time and effort Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks I would love for my home to be transformed into a relaxing environment that's focused on family time. All the things in my home are all telling me that I suck as a mom and that I don't have time to do family stuff because I need to do a B&c because everything is talking to me. Watching your videos is really inspiring and I've been so confused on how to start because everything is a mess but I can't clean because I have too many things and I also can't find anything cuz nothing is organized. Maybe starting with just one drawer and one drawer only with some of your other tips is where I can start!
Yes just starting with one small area is great that way it is easy to finish and feels like a win! When I first started I picked cups. We had so many cups and I only decluttered cups in one afternoon and it felt so good to open the cupboard and see space!
Ok, some of these are really helpful reminders, like don't try to clean/organize until you're done decluttering - that is KEY! ...and something I'm totally guilty of. But I really disagree with not putting things away in other rooms right away and not deciding what to do with decluttered items right away. If that works for you, awesome! But if I don't deal with each item completely right away, I probably won't come back to it for a WHILE, then that "keep box" or "donate/trash/sell/IDK pile" just becomes another overwhelming mess that I have to come back to and figure out all over again. This makes me less likely to follow through because it feels like I'm having to go through the stress of figuring out what to do with each item twice.
Having RUclips decluttering or spiritual videos or audible book playing in my earpiece helps me be in the zone and makes overthinking what I'm decluttering impossible. I can really get alot done with music or discussions
That’s exactly how I declutter. I mess up every room.🤦♀️ I always say I won’t start any other room but I do it every time.....😫 My husband is used to it... Lol 😂
Thanks, Shannon ! Love you & your Mom ! You are both so beautiful : inside & out ! This video was perfect ! Especially : “Don’t Feel Bad ! “. Amen ! I just decluttered / donated 37 items yesterday ! I have been faithfully decluttering periodically for years ! (thankfully!). But still have MORE to do ! I was proud of myself yesterday ! Yet ... HA ! Now it feels as if I did not declutter ! ( well .. it does a little bit). Funny how quickly we adjust to our “new decluttered normal”, eh ? But... thatz good ! I have now made a pile of CDs that need to go (happily, I’ve done so several xs B4). For some reason, THIS time , I am requiring myself to listen to each 1x first ! But just have on in b’ground is fine lol ! Getting it done ! I down sized in early 2020 ( purged lots!) , & am moving again a bit down the road ... to be near my daughter. I am super motivated to let go of MORE ! Love it ! Happy Mothers Day to you & your Mom ! You guys are GREAT ! Liz in Buffalo, NY
I set my husband free to declutter the garage - I said "nothing out there is precious." He opened the hatch to his car and filled it up. I stayed inside. Our garage wasn't bad but now it's only what we need - easy to see and find anything.
I prefer to have a film on if I am doing a big declutter which I know will take a few hours.. It just makes the whole experience more enjoyable. I always choose a film I know well so I can just listen to it most of the time and only look at it at my favorite bits. But I agree for a 10min declutter it is better to have no distractions.
A familiar movie is great background noise for me too. I also like to put these decluttering videos on. If I watch other people clean up, it motivates me to do the same.
Same! When I try to bring something back right away... i find something else and i tend to go from place to place putting things back but never fully be done with one area. Some items don't have a home yet....since its home is still currently full of boxes 😅
I declutter best with worship music playing in my ear buds. It's more enjoyable for me. I like to have a trash bag for trash, a box for donations & immediately replace items I keep. Taking everything out of a closet doesn't work for me. I tried emptying everything from my closet, placing items on the bed & all over the room. We had an emergency issue arise during the declutter so I had to stop. The stuff stayed there. When it came time for sleep that night, we had to take everything off the bed. I got overwhelmed. Needless to say, I like to declutter a drawer at a time. It works best for me.
As a 50+ year old lady I don't do Xmas or birthday presents anymore for anyone. My family and friends we now buy each other tickets for a show/exhibition etc. No additional clutter and a lovely memory of a day or evening out instead
Your mom and I are two peas in a pod when it comes to China buffets. Lots of pretty things! Great tips! I haven't seen a video about what not to do. Have a lovey week, Elizabeth
Thank you for your post. One thing I know I do is have something going in the background is maybe have the telly on or even listen to a podcast, so your advice was timely. The making piles for later definitely depends on your personality. When I make piles I run out of steam to put the piles away later. I personally make the most progress with Dana K White’s “take it there now method”.
My add would have me going everywhere. Now I focus on just my clothes,, or my child's ect. ....My phone rings 50 times a day so I get distracted and I have no choice, most of these are telemed or phone - zoom ect appts.i love listening to relaxing music on utube , while decluttering or cleaning!
When watching your videos I was always thinking you remind me of someone 🤔 and now I know you have something in your look from the actress Julia Roberts 🤗
Buy less (plastic) then you won't be so concerned abut what happens to the item after you're done with it. Ethical consumption leads to stress-free living!
Thank you for watching! Check out more decluttering tips on my blog: shannontorrens.com/things-not-to-do-when-decluttering/

I am so happy that it might help =)
Your first tip is brilliant. I love organizing and that really does keep me from getting other things done 🤣

Same. I'm a strong supporter of regifting as well. As a teen, we regifted so much, we'd sometimes accidentally regift a gift to the person who gifted it to us 🤣 it was all good laughs though
I have also moved on to gifting consumables, mostly a bottle of wine or if I've hand the time, then a home baked dessert or cookies etc.
I've discovered that for a gift to anyone, they appreciate a can or bag of their favorite coffee as much as anything! And of course, it's foolproof!
absolutely! I always ask for consumable items, my family have trouble listening though 😆
I actually think I prefer the opposite of 6. I prefer to have 2 bins out for stuff, one for donations and one for things I want to try and sell. And then of course a bag for trash. Perhaps you can contact an auctioneer. Good luck🙏

I am a new minimalist. Thanks for the encourage.
You can do it!
You are SO right! Nothing is truly wasted as long as it is being used, no matter who paid for it. I am a new subscriber and am really enjoying your channel, especially the ones with your mom and when you helped a friend declutter their space.

Your hair and make up is so pretty! You looks so beautiful! Thank you for sharing all these great tips!🤗💗
Thank you Noemi! I am watching your video right now!!! =)
Great suggestion to try really hard to not multitask. One thing at a time with intent and focus goes so much more smoothly. I do like to have background music playing to set the mood. Thanks for all your great shares Shannon!
So cute that your mom and you declutter together! Love it.
Thank you!! 😊

This was an excellent summary of what not to do! I am guilty of trying to determine where something will go while decluttering.
Great advice. I’m still de cluttering. It’s a maintenance daily or weekly process. Trying to not bring things in that we don’t actually need.
It is impressive that you learned to live on one income. I was encouraged to do that when my kids were young, but I did not do it completely. It always seemed like I should work, so I did. Thank you for sharing your journey to minimalism. 🙂
Great tips! I took this week off work for some deep cleaning/decluttering of my home
You have covered every little point that comes to mind while decluttering. Lovely video.
These tips are tremendously helpful. My house is a disaster because I’ve been doing all the things you say not to! 😂 I will implement your ideas right away. Thank you! You have earned a new subscriber. 🥳😉
I am so happy to have you here =)
Your advise to focus has help me.Thank you.
I'm highly impressed about the reality and the survey you took in a very systematic matter to put forth this content. it has taken gigantic efforts, yes.! many thanks for this.
Wow, thank you!
I am actually decluttering our coat closet, as I’m watching the video and I was about to make some of this mistakes. Thank Shannon 😃
Yay for decluttering. I hope you have a great day.
I use my phone for music and inspiration while I am working.
Love Nbr 3! You give such wonderful tips! Thanks for sharing your insights. These gems of wisdom helps! I’ve set a goal to work on my kitchen/dining area through the Summer. Then I’ll tackle my son’s room.
Lovely seeing you & very good content thanks so much 💖💐
Thank you so much 😊
I love all these videos Shannon! I’ve already decluttered my space but I’m watching these for tips to help my mom at her house. So much stuff to go through!
That is great you are able to help your mom! =)
These are all things I was doing. Thansk you for helping me see how to stay super focused!
I'm a new subscriber and I would like to thank you for a precise. thorough and informative direction to take when decluttering. I have been overwhelmed but you have truly helped me. Take care and stay safe👍
Thank you! I am so happy this list helped. =) I hope you have a nice weekend.
Really good advice...
I worked from my bedroom out.
That's great!
Thanks Shannon, this was very helpful. I get tripped up with these in my decluttering. Now I am aware , I will try to curb them.
Thank you Sally, Glad it was helpful!
#5 is something I learned the hard way! I never finished a project when cleaning while decluttering at the same time. I'd be tired and frustrated.
Very good! Thanks for bringing light into some issues that come when decluttering!😉
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Shannon. Great ideas., especially the one about not feeling bad. We do feel bad when we’ve spent money on something that doesn’t get used. Hope to see your mom in a video soon. 😊
Thank you for the tips I have trying to decluttering for about a year this will really help
You got this!
Very helpful tips. Thank you for sharing ❣️
Glad it was helpful!
Really great tips!!!!! Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
These tips are very helpful! Thank you💕
Glad it was helpful!
All good tips. I am SO guilty of cleaning while trying to declutter!
#1 is so true! I’ve made that mistake!
I agree Erica! I hope you are having a good day.
This was realy very useful and Satisfying.
Glad it was helpful!
Great tips. These make a lot of sense.
So glad!
Thanks for the tips
Gotta do what works for you😀
Having RUclips decluttering or spiritual videos or audible book playing in my earpiece helps me be in the zone and makes overthinking what I'm decluttering impossible. I can really get alot done with music or discussions
That is great!
I love decluttering. If I lived alone I would probably sit on the floor in an empty house 😂😂😂
You are hilarious 😂
Same
So would I.
Same!
Me too!
Great tips Shannon! Thanks for sharing!😊
Thanks for watching!
Always hitting like before even watching lol. Thanks Shannon, love your content as always.
Wow, thank you!
That’s exactly how I declutter. I mess up every room.🤦♀️ I always say I won’t start any other room but I do it every time.....😫 My husband is used to it... Lol 😂
hahah That can work too!
You are absolutely stunning. Love your channel. Lotsa love from Toronto.
Thank you so much!!
These are really good tips. I’ve begun decluttering our house and I have literally done every one of these things to avoid 😆
hahaha if they work for you then keep going =)
Thanks, Shannon !
Love you & your Mom ! You are both so beautiful : inside & out ! This video was perfect ! Especially : “Don’t Feel Bad ! “. Amen ! I just decluttered / donated 37 items yesterday ! I have been faithfully decluttering periodically for years ! (thankfully!). But still have MORE to do ! I was proud of myself yesterday ! Yet ... HA ! Now it feels as if I did not declutter ! I get distracted very easily and it’s very hard to complete one area. I need reminders like these so I can be more efficient.😊💖🙏
It can be so hard to stay focused sometimes. =)
I set my husband free to declutter the garage - I said "nothing out there is precious." He opened the hatch to his car and filled it up. I stayed inside. Our garage wasn't bad but now it's only what we need - easy to see and find anything.
Great thank you
Very useful tips 👍
Thank you 🙏
Good info. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for sharing!!
A familiar movie is great background noise for me too. I also like to put these decluttering videos on. If I watch other people clean up, it motivates me to do the same.

Thank you Elizabeth! I hope you have a nice week too.
Great video
Thanks for the visit
Thank you for your post. One thing I know I do is have something going in the background is maybe have the telly on or even listen to a podcast, so your advice was timely.
I would like to ask for advice on culling paperwork. I trained to be an accountant in my late 30s and now I'm in my early 60s and retired due to health issues. But I still have all my paperwork and textbooks for the training and learning I did. I know I don't need them anymore, but I can't bring myself to get rid of them. Your tips are really helpful thanks Shannon! I'm inclined to get distracted so will remember your advice. Greetings from New Zealand.
Glad it was helpful!
Good tips!!
Thank you!
Any good tips for decluttering with a toddler running around without it taking a whole year to finish
That can be hard, I use to take advantage of nap time or give them something interesting to do that they normally don't play with.
Thanks for sharing!!
I will star de cluttering now
When watching your videos I was always thinking you remind me of someone 🤔 and now I know you have something in your look from the actress Julia Roberts 🤗
That is funny! I have heard that before. =)
Mums: stay home with your babies then you won't have money to buy all that clutter in the first place and your family will be happiet
I totally understand a lot of people can not afford to do this, but if you can you are lucky =)
Buy less (plastic) then you won't be so concerned abut what happens to the item after you're done with it. Ethical consumption leads to stress-free living!
"you can't organize clutter!"
I really appreciate this video you made, Shannon! I now recognize many of the mistakes I've made, which gets in the way of my goal to declutter!
I think we have all done these LOL =) I hope you are doing well.
Thank you for these excellent tips! They do help me.
So glad!
