Short curtains in the dining--I am going to shorten them because as long curtains they overwhelm the room despite its 8 foot ceilings. Long curtains in the living room are a must.
@@tarynmaria_ I love the fact that you let us know that you have done, (in your learning experience), some of the things in your home that some of us are possibly doing. You are not being, “holier-than-thou” and judging anyone. We are all learning new ways of doing things all of the time. I also realize that you are, (basically), saying, if something works for US, then that is ok too. You are simply showing us that which you have learned and if we want to incorporate something you have learned into our homes, that is ok. I really appreciate you’re letting us know what you have learned, that works for you.🌺 Thank you❣️😊
I appreciate the advice! I also have heard do NOT decorate with dried flowers. That symbolizes the death of something that was once alive. To some people. I keep hearing conflicting statements on that! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!
A family member used to be critical of my uncle and aunt's home decor because "it never changes and always looks the same." The home was mid century and my uncle was an architect so the home really does not look outdated. It has nice decoratives that were thoughtfully purchased and rotated out for the seasons. There is something wonderful and homey about that timeless "sameness." 😂
@@danicegewiss862 GOOD FOR YOU, Danice ‼️ If anyone comes to my home to, “check out my home”, as opposed to visiting me; then they have wasted their time & mine. They have wasted their gas to get TO my home, and wasted ANY feelings/friendship I EVER wasted on them. They are exhibiting SHALLOWNESS ‼️
I’m a 76 year old woman. As I watched your video all I could think about was I wish I had saved more money. Not everyone can afford that level of perfection. I’m thankful for what we have and that we are happy. I know some who have everything without the happiness.
Thinking this over, I decided what really looks cheap in our house is us! I wear old yoga pants with a faded Land's End tank top. My husband wears baggy sweatpants and old travel-trinket t-shirts. But we're comfy.
Hahahaha. Same with us. Most of my clothes are rags ! Wearing old bleach spotted sweat/yoga pants and a 20 year old faded with holes in it, Red Sox tshirt. But it’s so comfy !
Great video. I agree with all your points and I committed many of these decorating mistakes when I was 20. I think the biggest thing that cheapens your home is clutter. Just cleaning up and decluttering can elevate your home’s appearance so much. I like your approach and find you refreshingly intelligent and interesting. Thank you for all your hard work.
Too many stupid little knick knacks. My grandparents didn’t have a lot of money but they also didn’t buy knick knacks. So their home was tidy and neat and cute. Nothing expensive and none of that “old lady candy” in a crystal bowl. Yuck. My grandma had friends that had old candy sitting out and you could see the dust on it. Anybody remember those horrible candies ?! 😮
Such a great point. There is no value to clutter. Most of it we hold onto because we are attached sentimentally. Take photos and donate. Chances are, we won't miss what we don't use or need.
I live alone as a woman and wash my bathroom rugs every week on 60° celsius. My toilet itself has no fabric on it. It is not 'cheap'. When you buy nice rugs and not bad quality, it is nice and comfortable for your feet.
Me too. I don’t like cold floors when I go to the bathroom so I have a small rug in front of it that I wash often. It doesn’t fit around the toilet but just in front. Comfort over fashion every time!
@@diamant1081dried flowers are just basically powder that hasn't powdered yet! I have some fake peonies that people have tried to smell in Oct. I just take this content as good fun! Kind of like joke, no kidding!
@diamant1081 I actually like the look of dried flowers. They give your house a cottage-y look. You just have to toss them out when they get dusty. And I've only ever seen fresh flowers at a mortuary. I think people would be offended by dried flowers at a mortuary. 😂
This is my first time watching your channel. I think there are probably many women that agree with most of what you view as cheap. However, I think and hope there are just as many women out there like me, that as we get older, not old, we have learned that life is hard enough trying to keep stress low and inspire happiness in our surroundings and with the people in our lives. Everyone has different tastes. I think patterned comforters, long vs short curtains etc... all depends on what else is in the room and what the patterns are.. there are very soft colors and patterns that are soothing for those who desire and need tranquility to keep depression/anxiety at bay. Some women that have lost their spouses and no longer have to have their bedrooms or homes look suitable for a man and woman.. she can have whatever style pleases her.. determining cheap vs not cheap is in the eye of the beholder... keeping up with the Jones has been what has gotten most of our society in the unloving and uncaring state and rat race for money that is in the world today. Many women and families prefer cozy, homey, comfy environment with soothing decor,, not caring about if it makes the room look larger or if the pattern might look to busy for some... I think it would be such a boring world if we all changed our homes to these guidelines so they wouldn't look "cheap" in others eyes.. then all of our homes would truly be cookie cutter! lol Just wanted to use my freedom to give a different perspective.. I love that you are confident and feel at ease to share with us and I feel comfortable to do the same.. life is beautiful... Have a blessed week!! I subscribed to your channel..
clutter...the wrong colours.....basic bad taste makes places look cheap......its not about money its about good taste and anyone can buy thiongs that dont cost a lot and make them look expensive with the right decor.......i love these channels because i like to learn and like to have a nice home which is why i came here......whats your reason?
I just bought some with back tabs trying to avoid the grommets. They are hard to slide open on rods. So now I have to order the rings to hook on....arggg. grommets were so much easier.
I like functional things as well as pretty. Grommets are functional so this is silly, and if you store anything under your bed you need that dust ruffle.
This is the first time that I watched your video. I LOVED listening to EVERY suggestion!!! It was so funny to hear because I could relate to what you were saying.... so real. This video was on point. Yah.😊
I downsized to a two bed two bath I have under the bed storage under my king-size bed. I have a dust ruffle on the bed, which I am so grateful to have. It is a tailored box pleat one that looks awesome and I will never get rid of it to tell me to just get rid of the stuff under my bed tells me that you don’t understand small space living no shade, but there’s important things under my bed being stored I can’t just get rid of them and there was literally nowhere else in this place to put them
I have to have one because i live in a smaller house with 4 kids and almost zero storage. Master closet teeny, linen cabinets small. Under my bed is vacuum sealed blankets we use during seasons. Blow up mattresses for guests, my husband likes bottles of water upstairs so they live under our bed etc... i just bought the dust ruffle (also the flat pleeted kind) like a year ago because seeing crap under my bed looked way worse.
I feel more to the point is to get over our insecurities and not care what others think of our taste. These decor decisions sound more like high school mean girls : when you are tired of your stuff switch it out and have a blast searching for the replacement but fretting over the judgement of people we invite into our homes…. Really, ditch those “friends”, better yet, let them dump you to search out souls as equally shallow as themselves.
This is not a video about what others think of our decor. These are the conclusions she’s come to by herself about what can improve the feel of her own home. I enjoy listening to other people’s opinions about everything so I can perhaps see things in a different light. It has nothing to do with insecurity or ditching judgmental friends.
@@littlemom2070 if it's all about how she can improve the feel of her OWN home, then why is it titled, "25 Common Mistakes Making YOUR Home Look Cheap?"
@@trudivecchione9642 ‘cheap’ is the unfortunate term, ‘out dated’ I feel is the term that was meant and much less insulting. Like, a golden toilet isn’t cheap but it is far more tasteless than any of these examples.
❤ I totally agree with you that's what makes the world go around we're not all the same so we're not all going to like the same things in life. And you know what they say about opinions😮
I bought some pretty silk flowers for my church years ago, and I was told people kept trying to water them. I also had a silk African Violet plant that looked so realistic that my sister said she wished she had such good luck with her AV. The more expensive silk flowers do look real and last. I agree with everything else you mentioned. You are so practical.
Thank you so much! Funny story - my sister had a mini plant from Target that she watered for a year and then realized one day it wasn't real!! It was a fake cactus that looked pretty convincing 😂
I have seen some high end flowers at high end furniture stores that go for $500.00 and up...they look fantastic and you can't tell that they are not real.
I just do NOT get the grommet hate. I think some folks think they want to be part of the cool kids group aka "designer" click by hating on grommet drapes. 🙄The issue isn't the grommets. The issue is people are cheap and don't want to buy enough panels. Also, the grommets need to match the rod 🤔
Agree about grommets. I think they look clean and neat and better than the cool kids using curtain rings with visibly cheap clips. I also mismatched (silver grommet w/a gold rod) & Since I mix these two metals throughout the home it works well…! 😊 (this was based on what I had at hand but if given the choice but try to match them)
I agree. In addition to the width or number of the panels to cover the window adequately, hang the rod as high as you can. There’s no point in trying to get that expanse look by having the drapes reach the floor if the rod is sitting just above the window frame.
Yeah I feel like the grommet-less curtains always look dated and kinda ridiculous. Like what you would expect in an hotel that was renovated 10 years ago. It just definitely doesn't look like a real thing. So I don't get the grommet hate either 😂
I like them. I see them in many beautiful homes. My shower is a walk-in type so no need for a curtain but the grommets on curtains can be very pretty. Many beautiful types of pole ends. Can’t think of what those are called
All really good points. I will say though some of us cannot have floor length curtains. I wish I could, but I live in a 1950's built house that has old fashioned baseboard heaters and have to have curtains short enough to not catch fire unfortunately.
Yesssss…this! My hubby surprised me with switching to radiant heating so all the baseboard registers are gone😁. I hated those dang things because you couldn’t have long curtains and they would fall apart if I accidentally hit them with the vacuum🤣
If you're willing to make the extra commitment to ensure safety, it is possible to have both. I've been removing the baseboard heaters in my house; slowly upgrading one room at a time. I still have 3 rooms with heaters and those windows also have floor length curtains. We either don't utilize the heater at all or we fold up the curtain when the heater is in use. I also have children from newborn to 15 years old. Not any different from checking the heaters for toys or scrapes before turning it on. Like I said, if one is willing to make the commitment, one can make it work.
I took the dust ruffle off of my bed, the toilet seat cover and cut out rug and most of the things you addressed a long time ago. As I looked at it, I thought it looked cheap but also unsafe (rugs can be a tripping hazard), germs in the bathroom, etc. I actually like the curtains with grommets and can easily close them when needed for privacy negating the need for blinds. I agree about the wall decals totally. The exception for me are those dedicated to children’s rooms. I don’t mind the popcorn ceilings actually. As long as the paint is fresh on the ceiling. 😋 One thing I have done with a small piece of art is mat it in a much larger and wider frame. It draws your focus to the picture. This was a great video. Looking forward to more.😊
My husband has dementia and misses the toilet. I was having to wash the floor before I could even use the toilet myself particularly in the middle of the night. A toilet mat is easy to pick up and wash. I have a number. You and I think differently about a number of issues in this video. You have your ideas, I have mine. Consequently your idea of cheap and mine are different.
@@jat6547 While those thin cotton dust ruffles DO look "grandma" or "girly" - the tailored ones do not.. They do make some really sophisticated non-ruffled "dust ruffles" in nice, upholsterery-weight fabric. Sometimes they have cartridge pleats - or just run straight along the mattress rail for that hotel look. If you can't sew (or can't afford to have one made), I suggest purchasing a heavy fabric tablecloth or 2 in a neutral tone - and using that instead. 😊
Good for your boldness! You are spot on! I've been watching an interior designer. (Nick Lewis) He's saying these very same things! And some we can change, some we cannot.
Curtains/drapes to the bottom of the window trim are classic. Many of us have some kind of heat under windows and long wi Dow treatments trap the heat behind them.
You don’t like a dust ruffle on the bed because it draws dust when touching the carpet, BUT, we should have curtains that hang down on the floor? Make up your mind...
Mary Anne, good catch! I prefer no bed skirts and curtains that only cover the window not the wall. I'm old and have seen things come and go. Each time ideas reappear, they're "new". Ha, ha, ha.
I love your content and your being brave enough to take nasty hits from viewers. It's best to take comments with a grain of salt. You are a strong lady . ❤
I painted The Starry Night on canvas and hung it in my kitchen, which is one of the first things you see when entering my home and gotten a lot of compliments. I say people can tell if something is mass produced well-known art piece versus personal reproduction on canvas. So why not display your husband's artistry? It's looks really good!
Agree with everything except the dust ruffle. Mine is tailored champagne satin with split corners and a pleat at each side. Looks great on my canopy bed.
I stand by my matelesse heavy cotton tailored bed skirt! It looks really rich. there is nothing under my bed, but it does hide the box spring and frame. I have hard wood floors, no area rug and I vacuum under the bed monthly. It feels really clean. 🤩. I agree with everything else though. 😃
This switch was alot of work for you and really refreshed the look of the room. I prefer the window without the covering, but don't know if there would be a glare. The crushed ice trick really works well. Thanks for some inspiration.😊
I have small house with small rooms but lots of windows. No curtains. Have accordion pleated paper on bottom sash of dining room windows. Cheap. I replace when they look too antique and droop.
I have a fix to your popcorn ceilings. I have a smallish apartment, so this may not be practical for some, but I’ve had new drywall put up to cover the popcorn ceilings. I hired a pro, had to move out for four days to avoid the drywall’s putty dust, but it was not terribly expensive. I have never regretted this. My place looks a hundred times better!
I actually scraped my popcorn ceiling in my last house. It was a mess but very worth it. I sprayed it with water to minimize dust and stapled a plastic drop cloth about a foot from the ceiling so that as I scraped the dust only fell a short way. Big improvement!
You know not everyone is able to change items in their homes because of various reasons, finances, locality etc. For people who live in mobile home communities for example need blinds whether corded or not. This video can step on toes of people who are doing the best they can with what they have. Im sure your intentions are very good but please keep in mind those who just cant change things in their homes.
This video is all in fun and most of the "mistakes" are things I have myself, no need to change anything. I'm certainly keeping my floral quilt and wall decals!
Oh dear! I had no idea people were coming into my home, looking at every detail and deciding if it looked cheap or not 😂. I’ve never done that in someone else’s home. Unfortunately I will think about that before I have someone over again. I have always loved toile fabric mixed with stripes or checks and Blue Willow plates. It just makes me so happy. I’m pretty sure that isn’t trendy since it’s been in homes for decades. 🤷🏻♀️
I agree that patterns are beautiful, and they make homes cheerful and inviting, but nowadays, minimalism is in trend, and people's mind are being rewired. 😊
If you like a quilt but not the pattern you can slip it into a duvet cover. Sew on ties or buttons or whatever method your duvet cover uses to attach them together securely.
I, too, am getting over COVID. I bounced back with a little extra energy so I'm washing curtains, tackling cobwebs. I started the year wanting to revamp my empty nest but I've been helping extended family since January so I'm gonna get this done before the year is up
You may think some of these things make your home look Cheap. But they can serve a purpose Ie bathroom mats. If you have someone with poor eyesight. or Alzheimer’s/ dementia These can help people found the toilet on their own. And with the length of the curtains some houses will most houses in England have radiators underneath the window so therefore if you have extra long curtains in the winter you are not benefiting by having your central heating on
I like curtains to end either just below the sill (not halfway between the sill and the floor) or just above the ground. And the rail should be just above the window, not a foot higher, unless there is also a pelmet to cover the gap. I wish I could afford louvred wooden shutters. And I hate bathroom pedestal mats. The idea of pee drying on them is nauseating. At least if it’s on the floor it can be seen and cleaned up.
I've been through it with the wrong carpet pad. It was small to prevent sliding but the floor darkened considerably underneath it. I heard the change in your voice right away and thought you might be getting sick. I'm sorry you had to deal with that, I pray you and any sick family are on the mend 😊.
Great advice and amazing tips. About dry flowers 💐... I had several lovely dry-flower arrangements, until a good friend told me it is BAD Feng Shui and threw them all away. Greetings from Holland !
I know, I know...I'm supposed to get rid of the contour rug in front of my toilet. But I absolutely hate the feeling of cold floors on my bare feet in the middle of the night! (and no, it's just too much fumbling in the dark to put on my slippers every time!) It's also very simple to throw it in the wash with the towels.
Thank you for the lightbulb issue! I have such a cringe thing about outdoor lighting, especially for Christmas lights. Mixing warm and very cool white is awful! Looks very cheap to me
I agree, blinds with cords are dangerous, esp. to a 64 year old like me... Best fake greenery, Hobby Lobby!! I have TONS of magnets on my fridge. LOL OK, I finally subscribed :) Bummer, I have textured ceilings, but then again, I rent an apartment. Fabric shavers... best invention and you can use them on so many things.
The house we recently moved into had popcorn ceilings, my husband tested it and there wasn't anything bad in it. The way he got off was just to spray it with water and then use a scraper. It made a mess, but it was pretty easy.
That is a good solution as long as the ceiling is tested--lead is not the issue with popcorn ceilings as much as asbestos is. Our house is over 100 years old and the living room ceiling is popcorn, which makes me very unhappy. That noted, it would cost three or four thousand dollars to remove it in a safe manner (asbestos method). My husband is convinced of the "sound dampening acoustic ceiling" myth, and having it plastered would be another small fortune. 😂
Our house was built in 1989 and has popcorn ceiling. I don't hate it except for in the kitchen and bathroom. Ugh! Who does that?! If it's never been painted it comes off easily with water and a scraper but makes a huge mess so I have nor attempted it. No lead or asbestos used in 1989.
Nice! I only have 2 things in this list 🤣 texterd ceilings and blinds. But my blinds are tan and our walls are a light grey with white trim, and we don't have ANY curtains, so the blinds are the star if the show! And we like them 😂 nice video!
Nice video. Please understand that the purpose of contour rugs at the base of toilets are not designed for decoration. Contour rugs are designed specifically for sanitary purposes. Their purpose is specifically to catch drips and dribbles so you can wash the rugs rather than risking drips to fall on your floor which is unsightly and could possibly stain your expensive flooring. I hope that helps you see a contour rug in front of the toilet in another light. They were not designed for decoration at all. The commode lid rug was designed so that you didn’t hear the lid falling and banging on the toilet every time the lid was closed. With soft-close lids, they are obsolete. I do not use the lid cover, but I am a great fan of a base rug, although not necessarily contour. Your observations on area rugs is spot on! Good video.
Blinds with cords are also dangerous for dogs. My son’s Jack Russell Terrier’s collar got caught on our cord. Luckily it happened right in front of me, or she would hung herself.
I wrote off most of these suggestions as personal preference, but framing all your artwork is something I had to mention. Have you ever heard of a "gallery wrap?" Look it up. It's really pretty, and I love it. Again, if you feel like you NEED frames, use them, but a large gallery wrapped picture over your couch or fireplace is beautiful.
Orchids are great for people who like flowers. The buds and flowers last a good while and rebloom with correct care. The foliage alone in nice pottery looks very nice and makes a visual statement. Holiday cactus too very lovely flowers and foliage alone
The only “art” that goes on my walls are the canvas prints of photos that I have taken. Every photo is a memory and that’s my happy stuff in my house. Every photo makes me smile. My fridge’s front has photo magnets of my own photos. The grandkids love seeing and playing with them. My love language is my photos of my memories. Every photo personalizes my space. I can get rid of every knock knack but not my memory photos. Keep up the good work on your videos and keep expanding your audience. 👍

Art - I would never hang something on my wall that I didn't just love, just because it's cheap! Any cheap art that appeals to your heart can be nicely framed. One of my favorite pieces is a poster that hung in my local post office promoting Hispanic Heritage Month. It's beautiful!
Dust ruffles??? 🤔 Never heard bed skirts called that. If you like the cottage look, bed skirts go very well with that, if you choose. Plus, with today's super tall beds (because of the extra thick mattresses), beds can look very out of proportion and awkward with no bed skirt. But you choose. No one else will much care. I don't find bed skirts difficult to care for.
I agree with everything you mentioned. When I moved into my new home one splurge was a 9 x 11 Karastan rug and high quality pad for my living room. I love it. I also never put anything on the front or sides of my fridge. I think it’s very messy and cheap looking. Great video ❤️.
I have a dust ruffle, and I HATE them. I really tried not to get one and said I’d never have one again, but my mattress is on a metal frame, and it hides the frame. I really need to buy a wood bed. Right? I agree with all your cheap ideas. Love your videos. Do part 2!
@@susansweat9125 I had one, but it never fit right. Actually the new one I got from Amazon was inexpensive, and washed like a dream. It’s not the dust I’m worried about. Dust ruffles are a pain when you change the bed. They get tucked under.😝
I came looking for this comment. I've looked for alternatives, but I haven't found one that seems like it will actually work. I hate my dust ruffle but don't want the cheap metal frame showing.

I’m just in the first minute of the video and I like it already! You had me at dust ruffle. I hate those things and we don’t have them on any on our beds. It’s just an extra dust collector!😂
I’m thankful my mom didn’t want carpet in the bathroom except a foot matt stepping out of the shower. She knew it was a moldy problem waiting to happen !
Ugh, me too. My condo had carpet in both bathrooms when I bought it. They are petri dishes for germs. It took me a while but they are gone now as I've renovated.
I agree with all of your points!! I used to have floor to ceiling draperies, but then came alone my 8 month old that pulls up on everything and I had to get shorter draperies for safety. They are not grommets though! lol
Thank you for this interesting video. I’m at the start of my house decorating journey and I’ll bear some of these things in mind. I know it wasn’t all serious but still, good points made. And whoever thought that rugs on and around the loo must have been on smack!
When we had our house repainted we asked about getting rid of the popcorn, it was a huge thing. We settled for having it scraped off in the bathrooms but had to repaint the remaining popcorn everywhere else. ☹️
It's such a big deal with everyone about popcorn ceilings. Mine are not stained or dirty looking. I don't mind them. My place is small and not a big deal. I hate painting ceilings. My sisters have big homes and so picky. They said when they came in oh Popcorn ceilings. I said don't be so uppity. I'm good with it.
@@lauriethomas3133 My house is almost 40 years old and had smokers, so our popcorn was ugly. After painting I'm fine with it too, but bathrooms are damp areas so washable walls and ceilings are a good idea. I've painted ceilings in my time too, once when I was 8 months pregnant in another old house and it definitely isn't fun. ☺️
If you clean enough, the dust ruffle doesnt get filled with dust. My bed frame needs a dust ruffle, I bought my bed 25 years ago its wrought iron with head board and foot board, probably would cost thousands of dollars to replace. The dust ruffle doesnt bother me at all and doesnt make the room cheap.
Just found your channel and you had me at dust ruffle!!! I have a very average ranch home...just moved here a year ago..kids all grown..hubby and I only and moved to 11 acres in the country. Over the years I went through almost every phase of cheap you mentioned haha. Still occasionally drawn to cheap...but I am much more intentional with my decor and purchases in general. Must have a spot for it..must serve a purpose...or hold some meaning. Every chapter I enter... I try to enjoy life with less and only buy things of quality...and quality is not always expensive if you are able to thrift. Literally all good points you made and looking back I often laugh at some of the ways I decorated...thinking I needed to fill every space...ughh...also...at almost 60 ...there was no fb marketplace...very few stores to thrift ect...when I was raising my 5 kids. Much easier to find certain things if you are patient and I enjoy flipping...or restoring pieces and things and can achieve a beautiful space on a budget. Great and informative video!
Be careful with carpet pads with LVP floors. Be sure to read warnings on various pads. Also, we removed our bed skirt, purchased new mattress, box springs, not realizing the taller springs made our custom spread too short. I finally discovered there is an extra large queen size spread. Perfect size! But, one simple change can lead to another problem.
Even plain carpet can damage floors depending on the interaction between the yarn dyes, the carpet backing, and the flooring material. I love the restrained use of quality area rugs in my decor, and use thin anti-slip mats beneath, but check twice a year that no adverse reactions are underway (or after using a carpet cleaner because of the addition of those chemical agents).
First time seeing your channel.. most of what you’ve said have not been seen in the average uk home for at least 10 years... Vallances ( dust collectors) carpet pieces in bathrooms, textured ceilings are things I haven’t seen in anyone’s house since the 90’s
Most of this is just personal taste. It doesn’t necessarily make your home look cheep. I actually share a lot of these preferences, but they are still just preferences. The one thing I see on the list so far that is objectively a mistake is toilet seat covers and toilet mats.
These are really good ideas and not the usual "buy 7000 acrylic containers and throw out everything you have." I have a fabric dresser which I could not stand in my bedroom -- even though i needed the storage. Now I keep it under my hanging shirts in my reach-in closet for little-used textiles and it's great. Here's one for a next video: I moved into an apartment with (literally) cheap laminate cabinets. It makes no financial sense to 'redo' the kitchen. I've painted the doors and replaced the sink and the counters (I love IKEA's slab laminates) and the cabinet hardware. But the best thing I did was to replace the drawer glides in the four base cabs (2 small and 2 large drawers) and every time I open those drawers, the peace I feel that the drawers will hold level and open smoothly and quietly is amazing. Inspired me to lay in all sorts of nice drawer organizers (including a knife holder). Freecycle and Buy Nothing groups can also be great resources if you are patient. My next step is to putty-over the visible staples on the cabs and toekicks and paint them with one-step paint for melamine. Cheap is as cheap does. We are the first editors of our own homes.
"... we are the first editors of our own homes..." I love that. I have lived in five homes and am in my permament one. Over the years I carefully chose or inherited items that I liked over what was "on trend." It amazes me how we can go into homes and see how--in some--things come together nicely.
You are new to be these last few days and I'm impressed. I really enjoyed this one. Thanks for sharing (I think I agreed with them all and I'm a 76 yr old woman living in a mobile home....it's all tastefully done, sort of, I think, but I'm not good with colors, was never a fashionista etc.) I think I'm going to get rid of my beds dust ruffle LOL. I liked and sub'd. :)
Floor length curtains don't work for everyone. I live in a 60 year old house and all my heat registers are directly under windows. Floor length curtains would interfere with my heat and air. Also have cats and don't want curtains covered in cat fur where they've rubbed all over them. Agree with the rest. Would love a part 2. 😊
I disagree with the curtain length. My daughter had some dragging in the dust on the floor, yuck! As far as blinds go I hate them because they are just horizontal dust collectors. I just moved into a place that has a couple of mini blinds but they don't have strings, so if you love them, they hold themselves up. My roomba is my best friend under my bed, it vacuums the dust bunnies quite well. Soap dishes that don't get cleaned off drive me nuts! I enjoyed your video and hope you do another one like it!
I agree with you 100 % ,another one that I think cheapens a room is over flowing book racks & book cases with them all of hem strewed every where on the shelf !
THIS IS ALL MY OPINION! Don't run out and change your stuff - I have lots of this stuff myself!

You are not being,

You are simply showing us that which you have learned and if we want to incorporate something you have learned into our homes, that is ok.
I really appreciate you’re letting us know what you have learned, that works for you.🌺

Thank you for this video. Sorry you got so many comments from people who take it personally!
If someone came in and judged my home, that would be the last time I’d see them. Put what you love in your home, it’s your home!
My brother made a snotty comment about my decor. He hasn't been invited back.
Too many Judgers have not learned to "shut it".

Thinking this over, I decided what really looks cheap in our house is us! I wear old yoga pants with a faded Land's End tank top. My husband wears baggy sweatpants and old travel-trinket t-shirts. But we're comfy.
Lol. I live in comfy clothes except when I must leave the house. Nobody here but me so I please myself. You made me smile, good one. 😊
I do the same! Better to be comfy at home!
😂 Thanks, Barbara! I resemble that remark ❤.
Hahahaha. Same with us. Most of my clothes are rags ! Wearing old bleach spotted sweat/yoga pants and a 20 year old faded with holes in it, Red Sox tshirt. But it’s so comfy !
BRAAHAHAHAHHA 😂😂😂. Eerily familiar. My house is waaay too nice for me.
You are so welcome! And great point about the clutter - too much and it brings the place down!
You have to keep the dust ruffle because today's comforters don't fully cover the mattress
I think you're right - I have had to buy king sized comforters for my queen sized bed!
Good idea!@@tarynmaria_
If some part of the bedding doesn't cover the box springs, THAT looks cheap. So take your dust ruffle and hem it to just cover the box springs.
I put a 2nd fitted sheet on the boxspring that matches the bedding. Easy to wash and don’t get in the way and collects a lot LES dust.

Dried flowers... that sounds like a mortuary. 😅 And they are real dust magnets.
@@diamant1081so are fake ones
Me too. I don’t like cold floors when I go to the bathroom so I have a small rug in front of it that I wash often. It doesn’t fit around the toilet but just in front. Comfort over fashion every time!

I like grommet curtains, easy to slide open. Also look best when there are extra panels for fullness.
I just bought some with back tabs trying to avoid the grommets. They are hard to slide open on rods. So now I have to order the rings to hook on....arggg. grommets were so much easier.
@@empresslee8764 yeah, they are very functional. I dont think they look cheap. Its all in the layering and material quality

I'm so glad - thank you for the amazing comment!
I downsized to a two bed two bath I have under the bed storage under my king-size bed. I have a dust ruffle on the bed, which I am so grateful to have. It is a tailored box pleat one that looks awesome and I will never get rid of it to tell me to just get rid of the stuff under my bed tells me that you don’t understand small space living no shade, but there’s important things under my bed being stored I can’t just get rid of them and there was literally nowhere else in this place to put them
I’ve definitely lived in apartments and know all about small spaces. As I said in the video - you do what works for you!
That is what I want, not a ruffle but a box pleat design. Nice and flat, not flouncy.
I have one because I have carpet & cats so I keep a comforter under the bed. I can pull it out and wash as needed & I need a way to hide it.
I’m a guy and I love watching Taryn’s videos. They are informative, and they also make me laugh a lot. I love her observations!

@@trudivecchione9642 ‘cheap’ is the unfortunate term, ‘out dated’ I feel is the term that was meant and much less insulting. Like, a golden toilet isn’t cheap but it is far more tasteless than any of these examples.
Better sleep on a bare floor to keep "dust" from collecting in your bedroom...although vacuuming might work every now and then.
To each his own. Get what you like, one person’s taste is not everyone’s.

@@tarynmaria_ 😆🤣😄
Buy House Beautiful or Homes & Gardens. High end homes never have those. Grommet metal is always cheap & shiny.
I like grommets too. That's what we mostly have in the Island of Jamaica
Yeah I feel like the grommet-less curtains always look dated and kinda ridiculous. Like what you would expect in an hotel that was renovated 10 years ago. It just definitely doesn't look like a real thing. So I don't get the grommet hate either 😂
I don't get the gromet hate. I guess since my shower curtains are NOT gromets then I don't think shower curtains when I see them on windows.
Me neither!! 🤔
I like them. I see them in many beautiful homes. My shower is a walk-in type so no need for a curtain but the grommets on curtains can be very pretty. Many beautiful types of pole ends. Can’t think of what those are called
@@cjhoward409 The ends are called finials
All really good points. I will say though some of us cannot have floor length curtains. I wish I could, but I live in a 1950's built house that has old fashioned baseboard heaters and have to have curtains short enough to not catch fire unfortunately.
Yep, I know what you mean! Thank you for watching 😊
Yesssss…this! My hubby surprised me with switching to radiant heating so all the baseboard registers are gone😁. I hated those dang things because you couldn’t have long curtains and they would fall apart if I accidentally hit them with the vacuum🤣
@@lynettecorle8391 Nice....😁Maybe someday I can get an upgrade too, Happy for you to be able to finally be able to have those awful things gone.

Dust ruffles. Old lady ish

I have a fix to your popcorn ceilings. I have a smallish apartment, so this may not be practical for some, but I’ve had new drywall put up to cover the popcorn ceilings. I have heard of people just putting drywall mud over the popcorn ceiling to smooth it out
I actually scraped my popcorn ceiling in my last house. It was a mess but very worth it. I sprayed it with water to minimize dust and stapled a plastic drop cloth about a foot from the ceiling so that as I scraped the dust only fell a short way. Big improvement!

You may think some of these things make your home look Cheap. But they can serve a purpose Ie bathroom mats. If you have someone with poor eyesight. or Alzheimer’s/ dementia These can help people found the toilet on their own. And with the length of the curtains some houses will most houses in England have radiators underneath the window so therefore if you have extra long curtains in the winter you are not benefiting by having your central heating on
Thank you for sharing!
Plus, if you have cats, 🐈 they might want to climb said curtains 😂
I like curtains to end either just below the sill (not halfway between the sill and the floor) or just above the ground. And the rail should be just above the window, not a foot higher, unless there is also a pelmet to cover the gap. I wish I could afford louvred wooden shutters.
And I hate bathroom pedestal mats. The idea of pee drying on them is nauseating. At least if it’s on the floor it can be seen and cleaned up.

I like the popcorn type of ceilings. I have the swirl textured ceiling only in my family room and it actually makes my art and black wall very nice.
I was not a big grommet curtain fan myself. However my hubby got a long black curtain rod that turns upward to attach on the ceiling. I love it now!!
Good video.

@@mulliganstew72 “Shutterfly” is a good company to use. Hint: set up the app (or use the website) to start an order. Don’t place the order. Let it sit. Each day you will get emails telling you about a discount that you can obtain with a code. And that, my friends, is how I ordered so many canvas prints 😜.
Art - I would never hang something on my wall that I didn't just love, just because it's cheap! Any cheap art that appeals to your heart can be nicely framed. One of my favorite pieces is a poster that hung in my local post office promoting Hispanic Heritage Month. It's beautiful!
Sounds awesome, thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for sharing!
I agree with everything you mentioned. When I moved into my new home one splurge was a 9 x 11 Karastan rug and high quality pad for my living room. I love it. I also never put anything on the front or sides of my fridge. I think it’s very messy and cheap looking. Great video ❤️.
Thank you so much, Cheryl! Your rug sounds amazing! 🤩 ❤️
I just changed out my entire house with uncorded blinds, I was sick and tired of mismatched curtains and buying rods etc!
@@sameoldsonganddance I think uncorded blinds are great!
Love your ideas and take on different things! As you said, all in fun!!!
Thank you so much, Marianne!
I have a dust ruffle, and I HATE them. I really tried not to get one and said I’d never have one again, but my mattress is on a metal frame, and it hides the frame. I really need to buy a wood bed. Right? I agree with all your cheap ideas. Love your videos. Do part 2!
Thank you so much! If the dust ruffle is functional then I'd say keep it!! ☺❤
Tailored bed skirts are not quite as much of a dust catcher because there's not nearly as much fabric and no folds.
Yes agreed lots of great ideas I never even thought of....I'd love to see a part 2!
Thank you!!
Dried flowers attract dust but cannot be cleaned and leave broken pieces.
I enjoy dried flowers in my house but they do have to be thrown out when they get dusty.
@@loriar1027I am wondering…how do you clean them?
Also horrible Feng Shui!
To clean dried flowers: put them in a large plastic bag. Add some rice. Shake the bag. The rice will knock the dust off of the flowers.
Yes! Please do another video on this. I loved this and I agree with everything you said. 😊
Thank you! 😊
Your home is just that! Your home so do as you like 👍 utimitaley your going to see it everyday no one else . Live your dream in your dream house even if it's not a mansion make your home your mansion with your character choices. Live well God bless
I’m just in the first minute of the video and I like it already! You had me at dust ruffle. I hate those things and we don’t have them on any on our beds. It’s just an extra dust collector!😂
Love it! Thank you!
Speaking of bathroom rugs/carpet, my home originally had carpeted bathrooms! I think that was a thing in the 80s but doesn’t sound like a good idea.
Yes! So many bathrooms from back then had carpeting!
They are not grommets though! lol
Most of this is excellent advice. I do have to have a dust ruffle though to hide the bed frame. P. S. I have nothing under my bed but air. LOL. 🤣😅🎃
Thank you for sharing! :)
If you don't have dust under there, you are a step or 5 ahead of me! 😅
Thank you for this interesting video. I’m at the start of my house decorating journey and I’ll bear some of these things in mind. I know it wasn’t all serious but still, good points made. And whoever thought that rugs on and around the loo must have been on smack!
Thank you!
My whole house has popcorn ceilings. I hate them but they are expensive to remove. Looking forward to a part 2. Loved this video.
Agree with everything! Do have grommet curtains on ens of extra large window ( to the floor) and they made a big difference
Awesome!
Yes, there are very nice dust ruffles, I need one too. I think it finishes off the bed. My opinion only
Just found your channel and you had me at dust ruffle!!!
Thank you so much - and I'm so glad you found me channel!! ☺
Thank you for the tip, so true!
I just bought a box spring cover, looks tidy.
Thanks for sharing!
I appreciate that you often respond to comments and don’t take offense at disagreements. It’s very friendly and refreshing.
@@Bill-kj8io thank you, Bill!
Great video! Yep, living with the popcorn ceiling!!
We'll suffer together! :)
I have heard they are a real pain to redo!
Great video, I agree with all your suggestions
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for sharing!!
"... we are the first editors of our own homes..." I love that.
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you're here! If you like your dust ruffle - you keep it!
Love the fabric shaver tip! You can even use a leg shaver! Sweaters pants whatever
Thank you! I use mine all the time - they make things look like new!
Thank you so much!!
So many great tips! Thank you! Appreciate your opinion!
Thank you so much!
it's all a matter of taste, your taste, not anybody else's. so if you like it, screw them it's your home.
Thank you so much, Kathy! I got a lot of requests so I'll do a part 2!
I agree with the bed being off the floor! And it's really hard to get UP out of bed especially if it's hard enough to get up in the morning.
I agree with you 100 % ,another one that I think cheapens a room is over flowing book racks & book cases with them all of hem strewed every where on the shelf !
Yes! I have a part 2 to this video coming out and that one is in there! :)
Girl - that floral blanket and shams needs to go right now!
😂
I love it!❤❤❤
