Yeah! I hate when creators say “Welcome OR Welcome back”. C’mon, please! Another thing I dislike is when each and every video starts with, “I’m Sooooooooo EXCITED to share this with you.” Really? PS…I like your ideas!
Textured bathroom vinyl flooring is recommended for safety reasons for elderly people. It can help prevent falls and the cushioning/softness as opposed to other harder materials can help reduce the effects of a fall. Picking a color/pattern that "camouflages" more could help.
The main point of easy clean flooring in the bathroom is to keep it CLEAN, not to camoulage the dirt. A peice of soft washable bathmat would help with safety in the bathroom as the previous person mentioned.
I once worked in a nursing home where the residents had textured vinyl flooring in their shared bathrooms for that very reason, and they were always disgustingly dirty. I'm not going into details, but it was soooo bad. I'll never forget them.
I love mine, too. I do my dishes by hand so my sink gets cleaned everyday. I give each side a little squirt of soft scrub and 30 second scrub with a scrub daddy before. After the dishes, a quick wash with dawn and scrub daddy and the very hottest water rinse. Then dry with a dry dish towel. My stainless steel frig came with instructions to clean with bar keepers friend cream cleanser. I squirt a little on a damp microfiber sponge, scrub with the grain, rinse with water on a microfiber cloth and dry with a dry towel. It takes me about 2 minutes. I've had just as much problem with real plants collecting dust as fast ones. The easiest way I know of to dust fake plants is to put them in a bag with salt and shake them.
I have tile countertops and HATE THEM! We remodeled our kitchen 18 years ago but could not afford the granite countertops. My husband had seen a tiled countertop that he thought was so pretty so that’s what we put in. I would rather have Formica countertops than these tiled ones. And the tiles are white with, of course, white grout.
Leah of SeeJaneDrill recommends making a solution of 1 part isopropyl alcohol, 1 part Dawn dishwashing liquid, and 2 parts warm water. She says it's a better grout cleaner than *anything* you can buy. Use an old toothbrush to scrub and a clean, dry cloth to wipe up. Works for me!
I updated my kitchen a couple years ago. I wanted quartz countertops, so bad, but I just could not afford them. This was definitely a budget remodel. So I got laminate countertops. They are not bad. I live in a very small house and a lower middle class neighborhood so I think it’s OK.
I agree with the glass table for the livingroom. Had an all glass with a wood base. Glass had a hairline crack. Glass shattered onto a shag carpet. All got thrown away. No more glass EVER for me. Headboard I agree with even for wood. Hair grease can also get into a wood headboard & cannot be removed. I know I had one. Unless you have some kind of pillow or a towel where your head rest up against the headboard DO NOT put your head near the headboard. Sit upright with one of those tv/armrest bed pillows. Your videos are great & life changing. 🙂
@@pearlrichardson4179 our issue with no headboard isn’t from head grease, it is the pillows wearing the paint off. I sleep with a pile of pillows. Starting to look like Elvis, or Fonzie sleeps there.
We lived in an older (1865-ish) home with what you are calling French windows. Twenty years of about 20 of those windows, actually called " 6 over 1", or, six small panes on top, one large one on the bottom. Learn how to use a high quality six-inch rubber-bladed squeegee! I made quick, completely streak-free work of those terrible windows, and bragged about it! Could have hired myself out for big bucks ... Now I use a 16" Ettore squeegee on my normal windows.
fun fact, there are blinds that go in between glass layers of the windows (we have very snowy winters, so windows have 2 layers of glass to keep the heat inside). My parents have had those for at least 17 years, and the don't get dirty because nothing gets there. Although they are a pain to repair if something gets broken
I have blinds in every room of my house. They are a pain to keep clean. The dust - at least in my experience - is not visible - maybe because I clean them regularly. HOWEVER, even if you don't see it, you can definitely feel it when you touch it. What's worse is, when you clean it, the slats STILL feel dusty!
Unlike 10 or more years ago, the new stainless steel appliances contain a large amount of nickel(cheaper to manufacture). The HUGE disadvantage to the consumer is that the new stainless appliances rust, now matter how you care for them.
OMG, yes! I had one in a new house, and had no idea… eventually I realised that there was something sinister in the jets… it took filling it with super hot water and biological laundry powder, and putting hte jets on for 30 mins… the black stuff that came out was like… sushi type seaweed, SO gross. I ended up closing up the jets, and just using it as a bath.
Once lived in a house with a round type bathtub. I don't remember if it was a whirlpool tub, because I only used it once. By the time there was an adequate amount of water in it for a bath, all the hot water was used up. I would never have one of those.
I crazily bought a small glass dining table for my rental cause it was on sale and i was ona tight budget. Right after, I was saying to myself whhyyyy??? It's a dust magnet. Silly me. I can't afford to change it now but asap.
I love my formica! It looks good wears like iron. It polishes beautiful with pledge! The no no's are... do not put hot pans on it. And it is best to use a cutting board.
I have granite counter tops. I always use a cutting board & do not put hot from the oven or stove directly on the granite. Love my stainless sink. Easy to keep clean. My previous house had formica & treated it the same used cutting board etc & it was old but great shape.
@@joanmavima5423 LOL yup Mom taught me to always use a cutting board. Protects the counter top & it's cleaner. I use a glass one to cut raw meats. Moms are the best!
Throw rugs ARE a trip hazard. My husband was always tripping in them! When I had my hips replaced, the docs recommended pulling up all three rugs! I never put them back! Especially in the kitchen they’re just a dirt-catcher! They need to be washed often!
This is a great video. Even If one truly adores a hard to clean object and wants to buy it anyway, its good to know what we are getting into and maybe investigate a little about it
Smooth vinyl flooring is lethal when wet. You only have to spill a small drop of liquid to make it like a skating rink. Yes texture is a pain but it's non skid and to clean it get a bucket of boiling water add a scoop of washing powder and it will clean beautifully.
@@toonybooper you put the hot/boiling water in the bucket to disolve the washing powder and then use a mop . I have been doing this for 10 plus years. no problems
Great video! I am very allergic to dust mites, which everyone has because they love dust. That’s how they survive. I have gone to great lengths to clean/dust. It would be great to have a video on this subject, because everyone has dust mites so I’ve been told if you have dust. Great ideas of not having items that hold the dust. I do rinse my 2 fake plants in the sink to free them from dust. I may just get rid of them. Have a wonderful day!
I have, or have in the past, many of the things on your list in this video and I have to say I agree with everything. You’re spot on! It’s hard enough to keep up with a home, why do we surround ourselves with things that make it even harder!
I agree w most of these but the top one for me is the couches without removable couch cushions!! Not only for the cleaning purposes but so much easier to reupholster/repurpose a couch w removable cushions!
I don't care how ghetto it looks .. I always put sheets on my couch, end of the week throw-in wash and put a new set on my couch. I leave them on when company comes over ..not embarrassed and as soon as they leave those sheets go in the wash.
@@hippieHawk I have old quilts on mine. Same deal. And once in a while I shove the crevice tool into the space between the cushion and arm. Always interesting to find what is in there.
What I love about you is you're so honest and you take these comments with an open mind. I got hooked with these series. You are so on point, some things here I love Bec of aesthetics only. You opened my mind with the disadvantages that go along with having these things.
Great list! I do have two tips Better quality fake plants makes a huge difference. HomeGoods and higher and decor. Stores sell these. There’s sturdier and don’t collect dust or fade in the sun. Also, we switched all of our indoor area rugs to the rug brand. They lay very flat, so not as much of a tripping hazard, and they are so low maintenance and easy to clean.
Yes! We have a table that has designs in it and everything would get stuck. My mom loves the table because my dad bought it for her on their anniversary so she didn’t want to let go of it. She bought a piece of glass & had it cut to size and laid it on top. It stays pretty & no more problems. 💕
As far as the area rugs, when I worked in PT we strongly recommended they get rid of them because they are a slip or trip hazard. We saw many patients that had this happen.
Right??? Why oh WHY are they made that way? The creators of THAT debacle clearly do...not...clean. The new skirted toilets are lovely - so lovely we have a you tube conversation about them. 😮😊
@@BobbiGailThe skirted toilets are easy to clean, but harder to maintain over time. Our plumber showed us the instructions and explained all the ways they are a pain (and an extra expense) to fix and repair over time. Just something to consider, if long-term maintenance matters more than cleaning to some.
I love microfiber sofas. I have and had many pets that shed and never do I see the fur on the sofas. Also, if you spill something, it usually comes out easily. I would stay away from woven (tweed like) materials, as the fur can weave into the fibers and it’ll never come out.
If you like knick knacks and framed pics just get a swiffer duster, I've cleaned for 26 years and those are hands down the best. I got some reusable dusters and unfortunately the dust does come back a lot faster, I have a couple once a month homes and the swiffer duster once a month still does the best job of keeping it clean.
@dianasimplifies. I do photography so have my favs framed. Will try these and guess they are good for book shelves etc .Have looked in google There are loads of swiffer products .Which would you recommend for pictures , knick knacks and books ? I need to do but and limited due to physical issues :A trooper I love to make myself but not over do .
@@HelenaMikas they make the actual Swiffer dusters with the short hand held wand and also the longer wand for higher up shelves, fans, light fixtures etc. The duster fits on the handle. It's just called a Swiffer duster. It's cheaper to use the dry cloths that you use on their other product... forget what it's called but you can use it to "sweep" hard floors without using a broom. The dry cloths can just fit into your hand. Either way both work great. Have used both products for years.
Lint roller on lampshade - what a great idea! Coffee table with glass: we took the glass out and put in a large flat tile. Stainless steel appliances: so sick of them, but they'll probably last forever. Micrfiber: even the clothes in that fabric attract lint.
I have small area rugs at my 2 entryways and at the foot of my bed. These are to keep as much of the dirt and grass out of my home as I have small dogs that come in and out quite a bit. I recently discovered ruggables, which are washable rugs. There is a base that you put the rug on to. And when it gets dirty, you pull it off and throw it in the washer. The base pad keeps it from slipping. I was told in the past at the senior living place that my mom is at that small area rugs are actually a very bad tripping hazard, for older people.
Thank you so much for sharing! I have a larger area rug at my entryway too - it helps a lot! And I agree about the tripping, I myself have even tripped over an area rug or two :)
I agree with all of your items. When I got a new headboard, I chose one without tufting and am so happy with it. Another item is metal shelves or decor with scroll work. So hard to dust.
When we put our house on the market in the early 2000s, stainless steel sinks were all the rage, so we removed our harvest gold enamel and replaced it with one. I hated every moment with it. You literally had to polish it dry every time you used it or it looked horrible. Going down the aisle of "smudge proof" stainless steel appliances at Home Depot/Lowes and seeing all the frickin fingerprints and smears is enough for me to swear off them. You made very valid points that should help many people make better choices, thanks!
I think it's the grade of stainless steel that matters. At my grandparents' house, the plain stainless steel sink & benches were put in 1945. Still looks good & strong. My house was built 1997 - sink & bench are brilliant & easy to wipe down. My friend in 2007 redid their kitchen & their stainless sink & bench was thinner steel with a wavy type pattern imbedded in rhe metal? That was a horror to clean. I think the thicker kitchen/catering steel benches or those used in hospitals are the type of stainless steel to look for.
We have a rectangular kitchen sink and I agree completely. You really have to work at the corners. We also have a stainless steel fridge that constantly has fingerprints. It's a bit of a bummer to wipe down frequently because you have to move all the magnets and kid art every time.
We wish we had never gotten stainless steel appliances in our new kitchen. Horrible. But, I love my white porcelain sink. A little bleach brings it’s sparkle back.
@@IrishAnnie There's a special oil you can apply on steel surfaces to keep the fingerprints off, I learned this in professional cleaner training. Steel is a little porous and if the pores don't have oil in them, the oil from fingers will show there until cleaned off.
@@rabbitgregory9289 It's a product from Kiilto I used as cleaner and it was a long time ago. Should still be several on the market no matter where you are.
My vynal flooring has a little bit of texture to it. I got it because I didn’t want the slick stuff. I have dogs and it’s very easy for them to slip and slide. My friends dog ran through the kitchen, slipped and fell and hit the cabinets. That dog died a week later. He was hurt so badly by that fall. Accidents happen but why Make them even more common by having slick floors.
i renovated to modern plastic smooth cupboards (dont know the material-similar to ikea type cupboards). They are actually white and look as good as new 3 years later. they have no grooves or design and there's no regrets.
Hello from the UK. Found your channel with this series. Thank you so much. So much to think about for our current and next home. Instantly subscribed and looking forward to watching the rest of your content.
The dogs won't wear the slippers, and the area rugs stop them from slipping and hurting their hips. Darn. They must stay. Everything else... 💯 🎯 I'm totally with you. Great video.
I love your brutal honesty. 😆😆😆 Mat paint is impossible to keep clean. Tile counters or trim on tables. What a nightmare that must be. Dirt did get stuck in my vinyl flooring in another house. Pleated shades. Nightmare.
Kitchen cabinet fronts..I live in an old farm house..the fronts of all of the kitchen cabinets have a gorgeous wood grain to make them super easy to clean I gave them a couple coats of polyurethane...no matter what gets on them a spray of window cleaner and wipe they look good all the time.
I will never understand why someone would have a headboard made from material instead of wood. I could see the problems coming with those from a mile away
@@tarynmaria_I don't either, I clean houses and I have no clue how to clean those fabric ones. I guess an attachment on the vacuum but what a pain! I like to just dust the headboard.
I have had a tiled kitchen top and bathroom top, since 1977... Never had problems cleaning these. Probably I just don't hate cleaning But I hate stainless steel fridges and appliances 😅😂
@@dawnelder9046 I use a carpet to get out of the shower. I don't like to wash the floor multiple times every day, as much as I don't like to place my wet feet on the floor. It's taken away to dry every time and gets washed every 3 days.
Tiled counters came with a house I lived in a while ago. I hated them because once the grout is dirty….from cooking or whatever…you’ll never get them clean. I replaced it with Formica and was delighted.
Compleltely completely agree on microfiber furniture. I also would get those drued water apots after cleaning...the only way it wouldn't look so bad is if I cleaned fhe entire cushion space so it all blended. I also absolutely add a vote for removable couch cushion covers. I have a white couch...the black dog sleeps on it, we eat on it, the kids jump on it. Yes, its gotten dirty, but washes up great in the wash, so I know its actually clean, AND laying on a fresh, clean-smelling couch is amazing.
The matte kitchen cabinets really depend on finish. We have these and it always looks clean, you see almost nothing at these and i absolutely love them 💙
How wonderful you are. Your personality is so easy to watch and listen to. I’m 68 and tend towards exasperation with jibber-jabber. We have just purchased a new “flat black” (hubby liked the colour) “square” Stainless kitchen sink. It is every thing I wanted except the colour (and it cost a fortune.) I’m waiting for it to go into our revamped kitchen so I don’t know how it will go. Hi from Australia.❤
I agree with all of these! here are 2 more which I would never in my home because of all the extra cleaning time they generate: > plantation shutters, or venetian blinds (instead of roller or other blinds which hardly ever need cleaning!) > strip mouldings on walls, furniture and doors. I know it is trendy to slap mouldings everywhere for that antique look -- but having lived in a C19th house, complete with antique mirrors, dressers, consoles, wardrobes, fireplaces and all manner of decorative timbers ,I have lost years of my life to dusting and wiping those grooves! in fact, anything antique is going to be more work, fullstop.
I have stainless steel everything but mine is touch-less. I wipe them out after each use. That’s my pet peeve to have water spots. To clean your lamp shades use Swifter Sweepers. Only clean one. Silk plants are my most problematic cleaning chore. But I find if you put them in your bath tub or shower, spray them with Lysol and then rinse them off. My husbands dog is the my pain in my side. She is a white Pit Bull and she sheds like crazy! Can I get rid of her?
I hate wiping the kitchen table. I have kind of a retro home, so I have collected a bunch of mid century modern table cloths. I put one on and then either shake it outside after a meal, or throw it in the wash. I have a bunch and not only does it mean I don't have to wipe the table, I love the different colors and designs.
I made the textured vinyl flooring mistake. I bought a Bissell combo mop/vac…it is the only thing that gets the crud out of the texture. Unfortunately I bought the cordless and it is very heavy to haul around the house….
I really enjoyed your three part series on the things not to have if you hate cleaning! You opened my eyes to some things I never considered like the inverted light and wicker basket style light fixtures that are so trendy now. Unfortunately, I do have the large jetted tub (definitely a dust and clutter collecting dinosaur) and tables with glass inserts (ugh) and a textured vinyl floor (why, oh why) and they all are royal pain cleaning mistakes! As we remodel our kitchen, hall bath and buy new furniture and fixtures I tell my husband I look only at ease of cleaning. Easy to clean is the only trend I want to follow!
Don't throw out those old shower curtains -- they make terrific drop cloths for painting projects. Back to glass shower doors: They're DEADLY for someone with balance issues! I'm partially disabled (need a walker to get around) and had a salesman try to convince me that glass doors would look SO NIIIICE in our new bathroom. "And they actually SHED water!" he said, breathlessly. My dude, ALL vertical surfaces "shed" water. And I am not wiping those damn doors with a squeegee after every shower (kids and husband won't, either). They do look lovely... when they're new.
I hate shower doors. An apartment I used to live in had them. Those heavy doors came off its track & almost injured me. Thank god I was not injured from them. They were old & I had my landlord remove. I will take a shower curtain over a shower door any day of the week.
@@katehepburn9544 They do... IF you can keep the curtain INSIDE the shower "pan" (the base). The second that curtain is pushed outside the edge of the pan water will start building up on your bathroom floor.
I had a dog that had diarrhea on my jute rug and shag rug. He also left a turd I didn’t see for my Roomba to roll over. I had to take the Roomba apart and dig all the poop out of the grooves of the wheels! 🤢 I learned some hard lessons with that dog!
Oh my gosh you’re reminding about the dog poop and roomba story online! Not sure if you’ve ever seen it but if you google it you’ll see - I was crying laughing!
I decided many years ago to rid my home of dust collectors and useless things. I have very few pieces of artwork. The ones I do have mean something to me. I know that having mirrors everywhere is a thing, but not for me. I do not have area rugs, fabric headboards, throw pillows, wicker anything, and so many other things that serve no purpose. I like being able to clean my apartment relatively quickly. I would much rather be sitting in the park enjoying the sunshine than polishing 500 knickknacks.
Fun fact, also REAL plants tend to gather dust, expecially large "office" plants. Actually, there are products you can spray over the leaves in order to reduce the statics so the dust doesnt get so much on them, and you can use analogous products on fake plants too 😁
Everything you said is spot on- except microfiber. Maybe it depends on the color. We have brown faux suede ugly couch that I want to get rid of because its ugly but it is so darn durable the thing just wont die! It looks as new as it ever did unfortunately except the foam has slumped but the material survived 5 dogs and multiple family members. Maybe just the ugly ones are durable lol.
If you have low light but want greenery I think a realistic artificial plant can look nice and all you have to do is put them in the shower once and a while!
@@JennWatson Many plants may not thrive in low light, but do fine in it. Grow lights are also great, and relatively inexpensive for those who prefer live plants.
RE upholstery fabrics/microfiber... There is one specific type of microfiber that is miraculous in terms of durability and ability to clean: Ultrasuede HP. I upholstered a monstrous modern sectional sofa in this fabric, a light fawn color (took a whole bolt). Most spills blot right off. Stubborn stains might require a little water. Ballpoint pen? Rubs right off. Cat horked up a hairball? Wipes clean, then soap and water just because the idea of it having been there was gross. Coffee? No problem. Once for a stubborn stain I had to use a bit of alcohol. Cat hair wipes right off with a latex or silicone sponge (I used a silicone baking mitt). An absolutely amazing fabric... unfortunately with a price tag to match. I don't have personal experience with the other products in the extensive lineup of Toray's Ultrasuede (and Ultraleather), but Ultrasuede HP is awesome.
Thanks for the tips, spot on for so many of these items! Do you, or anyone else, have suggestions for cleaning stainless steel refrigerators? I can't find one that I like.

It was gone within a year (for about a 1/3 of what I paid for it) I wear socks around the house and all of my socks were always covered with little pieces of jute fibers which in turn ended up in other rooms and in my shoes.
I had some of the coffee tables with glass inserts. My son's husky jumped up on it and broke the glass. Luckily, no one was injured. As for french doors, mine are just a single pane of glass so it's easy to clean. I love that you used a disclaimer that if someone loves the style, go with it. I'll have to go back and watch you first two videos. I'm trying to streamline my home - get rid of a lot of things I don't care for and find things I enjoy. Our bathroom has an old maple syrup bucket. It's metal and it doesn't matter what goes in it, overall. I do use a plastic liner, though, because of grandkids.
Kitchen and stainless steel use: Get a European style kitchen. All the appliances have the same cover and look as all the other cabinets. No need for the extra cleaning anymore, plus the look becomes more uniform and less cluttered making you perceive it as being clean. As a bonus the European kitchen has a separate fridge and freezer. Both have dimensions of p to 3 foot by 7 foot.
So true! I have watched all 3 of your videos on this subject- and subscribed😉. When it comes to the things that are part of the structure of a house, like sinks, countertops, cabinets, toilets, fixtures, etc my question has always been, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING OF WHEN THEY PUT THIS IN?!? Of course they weren't thinking of how hard it would be to clean, most of this stuff is designed by men. So yeah. I do hate to clean. Oddly enough I hate it even more now than when my kids were still at home. The last thing I want to spend my retirement doing is cleaning. Thanks for the great videos. Completely agree with you, another thing that would be very hard to clean are the fancy glass chandlers, I saw your dining room table and you can make your life easier by buying a Rectangular Plastic Table Top Protector PVC it will protect it from dings and marks some of them are heat resistant .Will make it a lot easier to wipe down 😀
I use plant based compostable trash bags primarily. I have them in the bathroom upstairs, it makes it easier for me to just take the bag downstairs. I have mission, shaker bedroom set and I would love to replace it so I don't have to dust between the slats, I just can't find anything else I like.
I’ve owned leather couches ever since I got my first house 42 years ago, that’s 2 sets. Leather couches have a very long life time, but be sure to buy from the more expansive segment otherwise the something inside will break before the leather is finished. I do throw in soft cushions and a folded up plaid in case I get cold. It gives it a softer look.
I clean my stainless steel sinks with Clorox Cleanup with bleach or the Clorox wipes. They both clean and shine the stainless and kill bacteria. Win-win.
@@traditionalfood367 It kills germs, bacteria. And Covid. “The NHS has even stated that the average kitchen sink contains 100,000 times more germs than a bathroom or lavatory, despite most people thinking that the toilet is the most contaminated part of the house.” And vinegar won’t kill all these. Bleach works, and I rinse the sink after 1/2 hour so it’s not getting on my dishes. But if you don’t clean effectively, everything else is.
I would like to add rug(the one we use in the living room), check the designs on it, get the smooth ones not the one with grooves as small stuff like scraps of food gets stuck in it as its hard to clean, especially if you have kids.

Awesome, thank you so much!!! And such a great point about the glass shattering - didn't even think of that!
@@pearlrichardson4179 our issue with no headboard isn’t from head grease, it is the pillows wearing the paint off. I sleep with a pile of pillows. Starting to look like Elvis, or Fonzie sleeps there.
I would add: cabinet fronts with grooves/ patterns. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for sharing!!
I definetly second the french doors with individual panes miserable! I love french doors but go with the full glass doors !
Full glass doors for sure!
That is why they are called “panes” 😊
Agree….I built a home last year and went with full glass. Retired ….I go with less is more
We lived in an older (1865-ish) home with what you are calling French windows.
Or get the ones with insets between two panes of glass
You forgot window blinds. Yuck. Each panel and slat gathering g dust! They now have enclosed blinds but I guess they cost a lot.
Yes!! I had those in my part 1 of this video - so dusty!
You ain’t never lied! The worst.
The enclosed ones are bad though if it somehow breaks internally.
fun fact, there are blinds that go in between glass layers of the windows (we have very snowy winters, so windows have 2 layers of glass to keep the heat inside).
My new stainless appliances are finger print free. They don’t need polishing . Love them .
Awesome! I need fingerprint-less ones!
Unlike 10 or more years ago, the new stainless steel appliances contain a large amount of nickel(cheaper to manufacture). The HUGE disadvantage to the consumer is that the new stainless appliances rust, now matter how you care for them.
Same here all mine are too and they have the fingerprint resist coating.
The worst thing to clean is a whirlpool tub.
Very difficult!
Whirlpool tubs are a bacteria hazard. Plus they are difficult to get in & out. Uses wasteful amounts of water.00
And the jets should be cleaned out as well.
I hate glass tables. Period. Inserts or solid. Guh.
Yes!
I agree. Keeping them clean is a full time job.
Looking to replace mine now!! Hate cleaning that thing every day!
100% agree. Just the thought of glass tables makes me shiver.
Thank you for sharing!
I have granite counter tops. I always use a cutting board & do not put hot from the oven or stove directly on the granite. Love my stainless sink. Easy to keep clean.
My previous house had formica & treated it the same used cutting board etc & it was old but great shape.
Well brought up children were taught by their mothers to *always* use a cutting board 😊
I love my formica too but I've never heard about polishing it. I gotta look into this now 👍
@@joanmavima5423 LOL yup Mom taught me to always use a cutting board.
Dirt catchers and tripping hazards for sure! I have one at the front door to catch dirt but otherwise I've decluttered them :)
This is a great video. Even If one truly adores a hard to clean object and wants to buy it anyway, its good to know what we are getting into and maybe investigate a little about it
Very true! Thank you so much! 😊
All of this is making me feel so much better about my dust problem.
As a housekeeper I agree with this video. Great advice to consider.
Thank you!
Smooth vinyl flooring is lethal when wet. You only have to spill a small drop of liquid to make it like a skating rink. Yes texture is a pain but it's non skid and to clean it get a bucket of boiling water add a scoop of washing powder and it will clean beautifully.
Thank you!
I think boiling hot water will warp the vinyl. I've damaged vinyl floors with a steam mop.
I think if you're rinsing your plants you should be good! Thank you so much for sharing and you have a wonderful day too 😊
I take the plants outside and hose them off and let them dry in the sun.
Get a vacuum with a brush/ dust attachment that is HEPA rated. That should solve your problem.
I have, or have in the past, many of the things on your list in this video and I have to say I agree with everything. You’re spot on! It’s hard enough to keep up with a home, why do we surround ourselves with things that make it even harder!
Thank you so much, Michelle!
I agree w most of these but the top one for me is the couches without removable couch cushions!! Not only for the cleaning purposes but so much easier to reupholster/repurpose a couch w removable cushions!
So true!!
Use a white Magic Eraser on your stainless steel sink. Shines and cleans better than ANY cleaner.
Great tip! I even use one in my black granite composite sink!
I use one for everything - use on the stove top, on the shower screen I even used one to get make up out of carpet once!!
I use window cleaning spray and kitchen roll for stainless steel
I used magic eraser on a SS stove & it left a permanent scratch. I would never take that chance again
What I love about you is you're so honest and you take these comments with an open mind. I got hooked with these series. You are so on point, some things here I love Bec of aesthetics only. You opened my mind with the disadvantages that go along with having these things.
And btw, you look beautiful in that shade of blue ❤
Aww thank you so much!! ☺❤
Thank you for sharing!!
Yes! We have a table that has designs in it and everything would get stuck. My mom loves the table because my dad bought it for her on their anniversary so she didn’t want to let go of it. She bought a piece of glass & had it cut to size and laid it on top. It stays pretty & no more problems. 💕
What a great solution!!
If you really detest cleaning, look for flooring that matches the dirt in your area.
Good tip!
We are replacing our appliances with white, next. Yes!
Great advice!
As far as the area rugs, when I worked in PT we strongly recommended they get rid of them because they are a slip or trip hazard. We saw many patients that had this happen.
For sure, thank you for sharing!
I hate toilets that have that awful pipe curly stuff on the outside of the base.
Yep - all my toilets are like that!
Yes, skirted toilets for the win!!
When I redid my bathrooms I got smooth ones, goal is an easy to maintain home. Quartzite counters and windowsills, nearly indestructible
Good to know, thank you!
Like faux suede?
Thank you, Diana!
Stainless steel appliances: so sick of
them, but they'll probably last forever. Micrfiber: even the clothes in that fabric attract lint.
Thank you so much!! And agree - I have microfiber socks that I bought before I realized and they are full of lint!
So true!
Thank you so much!!
Yep, the fingerprints!!

Oh my gosh you made my night! Thank you so much and best of luck with the new sink ❤ (P.S. I was in Australia so long ago - 2001 - and LOVED it!)
I agree with all of these! here are 2 more which I would never in my home because of all the extra cleaning time they generate:
> plantation shutters, or venetian blinds (instead of roller or other blinds which hardly ever need cleaning!)
> strip mouldings on walls, furniture and doors.
Thank you for sharing! You are so right about the years of your life, it's so time consuming!!! :)
For pleated lampshades, use a soft paintbrush to dust them 🧐
Thank you!
I use my vacuum cleaner with the small brush attachment.
They used to make a special brush that was pointed just for cleaning those pleated/textured lampshades.
Yes! I am a professional house cleaner and either a vacuum or a soft paint brush will help get pleated lampshades clean.

I can't stand shower doors. I prefer shower curtains. If they get too dirty, it goes in the trash. Done.
I like curtains as well but I actually wash them (and sometimes in bleach if needed) and use them for years!
For a small walk in shower, do shower curtains keep the water from getting on the floor?
@@katehepburn9544 They do... IF you can keep the curtain INSIDE the shower "pan" (the base). The second that curtain is pushed outside the edge of the pan water will start building up on your bathroom floor.

Oh my gosh, same! I have so much of this stuff!
Well said!
I don’t mind tile countertops. I use oxyclean in grout (make a paste) or baking soda and vinegar, for grout staining.

Fun fact, also REAL plants tend to gather dust, expecially large "office" plants. Actually, there are products you can spray over the leaves in order to reduce the statics so the dust doesnt get so much on them, and you can use analogous products on fake plants too 😁

@@tarynmaria_ but how are they to stay clean?

Very smart, real, and cognizant of everyday life.😊🌻
Awesome! I'm so glad you're here!
Furniture salesman told me this trick. Clean microfiber with distilled water, then you won’t get the water stain. Game changer!
Great tip!
Thank you for sharing, I concur with all 20❣️✌️
Thank you! ❤️
I have a few silk-textured lampshades. Yes, dust collectors. I use a wide soft bristle paintbrush to dust them works like a charm and is great for pleated shades and your computer keyboard.
Great idea!
Today I'm sharing items to NEVER have in your home if you hate cleaning. This is the final part in a 3 part series! Watch the other two here:

I HATE stainless steel appliances!! It's ridiculously difficult to keep clean. Also, I don't like the "industrial" look. It's just not my thing.
I like the look of them personally but mine are constantly covered in fingerprints...I've given up! :)
I was shopping for a white fridge at Lowe's the other day and all they have are small apartment size ones with the freezer on top. ☹️
@@bahba9247you might be able to order a white one? I think we got our white one there but it was years ago. I know Sams club sells some white appliances online. I don't understand the stainless craze. I clean houses and they are hard to deal with. We have white double ovens and white fridge. The only stainless worth getting is the brushed kind and it's even darker than the regular ones. It doesn't get the fingerprints or not as badly.
Bar Keeper's Friend
I absolutely hate stainless steel appliances too. I’d love to go back to my white one or even almond😂
Baskets!!!! Dust magnets. I have all appliances of the stuff that stays cleaner. There really stay much cleaner.
Thanks for sharing!!
You can wash baskets with a hose and soapy water.
I have area rugs in front of entry doors, hoping dirt is stopped somewhat and bot tracked in. We dont have a "leave shoes at the door" home. I wish we did!
The rugs will definitely help at least!
Completely agree with you, another thing that would be very hard to clean are the fancy glass chandlers, I saw your dining room table and you can make your life easier by buying a Rectangular Plastic Table Top Protector PVC it will protect it from dings and marks some of them are heat resistant .Will make it a lot easier to wipe down 😀
Thanks for sharing!! ☺
I use plant based compostable trash bags primarily. I have them in the bathroom upstairs, it makes it easier for me to just take the bag downstairs.
No fake plants because yes they get dusty and look bad and also because my cat will chew on them. I don't love or hate my stainless steel appliances, they just there.
I have mission, shaker bedroom set and I would love to replace it so I don't have to dust between the slats, I just can't find anything else I like.
Plant based trash bags sound awesome!!
Good tip, thank you!
Textured walls and ceilings! We have popcorn ceiling and it always looks dusty.
Yup - I have this in my kids' rooms!
Stainless steel appliances can be “made fingerprint-less” (for a few weeks at a time) by polishing with baby oil after you clean. It works wonders!
Great tip!
I clean my stainless steel sinks with Clorox Cleanup with bleach or the Clorox wipes. They both clean and shine the stainless and kill bacteria. Win-win.
Carcinogenic
Such a good point!
I have literally never lived in home without tiled kitchen counters. She makes it sound like those are uncommon now.
Really? I haven't seen it in a while!
