Oooo I love your sofa pillows❤
Go with the new place for coffee maker.
I think you can lose the 2 decorative napkins on the shelf, they have no function.
I like the pitcher with flowers ..however, (Im gonna put my keys on the kitchen table, think I will toss them on the matt, less obvious") you dont need the white doily under it, more to clean under. Do you need 2 cake plates out? Pack another one away, let your shelves breathe, too much crammed in that corner, open space is good space.❤ just a suggestion. OH! here is an idea, use one of your cake plates to put under the pitcher of flowers if you like it out, just pack the dome away.😉
I loved Myquillin's books, so was happy to watch your take on her "hush the house" concept. 😊 (for those who don't know, her name sounds like Jaqueline, but with Mike at the beginning) 🙂
Hi, Dawn! I stalk your channel often. Love it! I've been a minimalist for a while, after watching you of course. I like the hush your house idea. I've been doing this and not knowing it. There is something about having less in a home. Makes me feel like I can breathe easily. Thanks so much for encouraging us to clean and declutter! Keep up the good work! 🌻
P. S. I'm the only one in my family who believes in minimalism. I cannot get my people to declutter! Drives me crazy! 🤪😂
Do this mattress need to out gas- does it have a plastic or other odor?
There's a lot on those shelves. The previous commenter mentioned a lot of cake plates....
It looks fine, but since the rest of the kitchen is clear and lovely it looks even more cluttered in comparison. Just a thought.
Ohhhh my word Dawn @TheMinimalMom !!! I just emptied out HALF (maybe 60%) of my 1900 sq foot home over the last 2 days. 😳🤪 98% went into my black garbage bags and tonight... I almost cried being able to walk through 3 rooms and not trip or walk around STUFF. I'm looking forward to finishing the rest - while my body aches , my mind is so much more at ease. ❤
Wow! That's so impressive! Keep up the good work.
❤
Be proud of yourself!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 congratulations!
@@carolineclark6102 thank you!
I’ve made a decision! I love Dawn and have been watching her for a couple of years, but I’m not even going to try to be a minimalist anymore. When she finishes decluttering, there’s nothing going on, nobody’s doing anything, nothing to do but look at the clear surfaces. I like to sit among all my little projects, all going on at the same time. I plan to keep all my stuff as long as I’m here. (No Swedish Death Cleaning for me.) I’ll just make sure to leave enough money to pay for a couple of big dumpsters after I’m gone. Still luv ya, Dawn! And Cas!
When my older children were younger, we used to do this thing that we called yard sale. I would go in the room and drag everything but the big furniture out throw all the laundry on the couch, and put the toys in a long line through the house. Then, after vacuuming, we would start putting things back, but the boys had to go to the “yard sale” and select the most important things to put back in the room. Once the room was where we wanted it, everything else would be boxed up and put in the storage shed, or set aside for a real yard sale/donation/give away.
It was the best way I have ever found to get young children excited about cleaning their room and decluttering toys. Haha, I guess desperation led me to a hybrid of Marie Kondo and this fabulous new approach!
Love this.
I'm going to try this with my boys, it sounds like a great idea
what a great idea :)
I love this!
I can get on board with this! I've gotten pretty good at not bringing new things in. I haven't let go of things yet though! This is great, because it's like seeing the things as a strangers stuff so you can separate your things from yourself and know what is right for you.
I've been a minimalist 2015. Last year my kitchen started getting too much stuff. I took "EVERYTHING" out of the kitchen and set it on a table in a side room. Then as I needed it I would bring it back into the kitchen. I gave it a few weeks and then everything that was still on the table left the house. I really like the quite room, so peaceful.
Great idea!
oops thank you@@afisanaa
What do you mean by "left the house"? Where did it all go?
Like the little longer time frame - no regrets or rebuys due to too quick decisions
This just popped up in my feed. I don't understand why relaxing has to equal bare. I adore my bedroom and it has so many of my favorite items. I have never understood people who don't hang art/pictures on their walls.
It doesn't have to be bare. It's the idea that having a lot of stuff to clean can feel overwhelming and each brain has a visual threshold.
I love all the pink and I love seeing you give yourself permission to buy something new. Sometimes the "minimal" content can feel like an extreme act of self-deprivation, and here you're showing its a form of self love and self respect!
I love the way you articulated that!
Agreed.
I LOVE this concept, Dawn!! When I have moved residences, I have breathed easier and felt such freedom in the space before all the clutter returned. Having it all out of the room then bringing it back in def helps me to re think what returns. Thanks for the reminder❤️
It is 100% okay to get new stuff to freshen up your space and then put away and eventually get rid of the old stuff! I get my stuff at the Goodwill and I take it to the Goodwill too! I would argue that this is actually a fantastic thing to do and is the ultimate way to recycle. My decide once rule on this is that I don't buy new stuff. I buy stuff from the thrift store or vintage or whatever. The old stuff is often of much higher quality.
Yeah. And I was about to say, "You're supposed to show us you're a minimalist and there you go, buying stuff. What is your message?" I'm glad I read your comment and refrained. 😊
My mom wanted a cake plate, but had little use for it. I told her that coffee shops keep apples, oranges, and bananas in it. Perfect solution for mom.
I tried it this evening. The reactions have been so funny. My husband and boys were gone, and the girls in their room and I quickly emptied the living room of all decor and pillows and blankets (and stray items) My girl came out to say good night and looked at it and said, Mama, you cleaned the living room : ) I told her what I did and she said she loved it!! All clean and empty. When my husband and boys got home, my husband said, what happened? It looks like we just moved in, the homey touch is missing, but my sons felt just like my daughter - it feels so good everything clean. Please, Mama , when you put some stuff back, only a few things, not much! It was really eye opening and hilarious. : ) By the way, I do love that clean empty feeling too. Thank you, Dawn, for this evening inspiration. : )
❤
You said it yourself, the homey touch is GONE!!!!! Clue there!!!
your husband is right. The video makes it seem like they just moved in and is NOT homey
When my son was a teenager I got tired of his room so I took everything out and laid it on the garage floor including the mattress. Over the next day and a half he moved back a quarter of it then he said I don’t want any of the rest.
I’m fixing to take some stuff out of my 13 year old son’s room. He has a toy box that is full of remote control cars and things he no longer uses. I’ll make a spot in the building for it.
O.K. Here is the results of hushing the side of my fridge!! Lol! I took everything off & waited 24 hours. I was so shocked to discover how much I missed it all!! It looked so stark! Seeing those little pictures, notes, & quotes everyday meant more to me than I ever knew! I am a minimalist but I will be keeping these treasures on my fridge!! This was a great lesson :) Thanx Dawn!
I’ve seen steel (not aluminum because it isn’t magnetic) cookie sheets used to corral magnets, notes, etc. on the side of a refrigerator. It makes the assortment of small items “read” as one item. It’s the same concept as gathering small items on a tray to make a grouping, which looks less cluttered than a lot of individual items.
I have found that decor on the table actually helps me keep it clear because I don't like the prettiness being ruined. So if I want a clean table, I have to decorate it 😊
I watched this video a few days ago and couldn't get it out of my head. I even showed it to my mom, age 82, who lives with me and my husband and daughter. My mom has been doing Swedish Death cleaning in her own room. She loved your video as well. Yesterday we took everything out of every cabinet and drawer in the kitchen. Scrubbed it all down and made some hard decisions. There were some things that were lovely but that we just don't use.
I came up with a new line. "If this had never come into my house would I miss it? If the answer is no, I got rid of it.
Thank you for this video. I feel so motivated to continue.
My youngest son, 21, moved back home after two years of college - Culinary Arts - and working. He is revamping the kitchen w/me. We need more counter space to work. We can’t expand, so we have to detract. I wanted everything in the drawers so we had to declutter a lot. I was debating an egg slicer… I don’t like or eat boiled eggs. I don’t use them in Chicken salad or anything😝. We only make them to decorate for Easter. I couldn’t let it go because “everybody has one” (my mom/mother-in-law/sister). I can use it for slicing strawberries and other soft fruit (knowing I will NEVER remember to use it for that😒). I put it in the garage yard sale bin but it was still talking to me.
Your question of “If this had never come into my house, would I miss it? If “No” let it go!” led me to ask “What would I use instead??” A knife. Like I have for 40+ years. Except now I have my son’s professional knives which make everything so much faster!!
Thanks for your idea!! Using that with Dawn’s ideas here will make letting go so much easier! 🙂💐
**Update - I offered that egg slicer in a FB Gifting group. Someone snatched it right up! It’s gone and not missed!!**
I LOVE this idea. It is a great non-threatening way to introduce the idea of decluttering and minimizing to someone who isn't on board. It could surprise them by how relaxed they feel in a decluttered space.
Agreed! I was just thinking of doing this recently, but didn't know anything about this method of hushing a room. When I told my husband what I wanted to do he panicked thinking I was going to get rid of all his stuff on the library shelves! He felt much more at peace with it once I told him it's just going away and pieces will come out when we decide we want them back in the room.
I think it would TAKE me 24 hours to get everything out of a room!
Absolutely! I think this is the system I need to use for my bedroom cupboard. It’s so hard deciding which clothes to keep which ones to get rid of.
PS The jug is gorgeous! You haven’t gone too far. I think peach is the colour of the year.
@@cynthiafisher9907I think she just removed the stuff on flat surfaces not what was inside or on the walls??
I accidentally hushed my house last week when I got new flooring. I paid extra to have the installers move the furniture, but I cleared all surfaces and emptied closets and stacked everything in the laundry room. It was so much easier to get rid of stuff afterward (but not easy to do laundry) and I realized how much extra we had when I was slowing reincorporating our belongings. I’ve been so much happier in the space. Now I need to hush the garage by taking care of all these donations! Maybe my garage will be quiet enough to fit my car!!
Did anyone else wonder how those darling white tulips lived to see the day of being displayed without being declutterred by Dawn in the past few years?!? Great video!
I think she said she hadn't used them yet......
My analysis without trying this:
1. Empty an entire room/space.
2. Box everything up using Amazon Boxes
3. Hide everything.
4. Wait 24 hours.
5. Spaz out since I still need to use the space but don't have the necessary tools to do what I need to do.
Post 24 hrs:
1. Put everything away that I know I'll actually use AND has a space.
2. Find cool items and tools to fill now empty space.
3. Return back to where I started.
🤣
I think the dining room table looks lovely with the decor. It’s very simple.
This inspires me toSHUT MY HOUSE UP !!!😂🤣🤣🤣😁😅🤣
😂😂😂😂😂
😂🤣
You and me both!! My house is screaming for real!!
I love what you did on kitchen and dining room. Just my personal opinion, I think the shelf is a little too busy. Try and take out white bowl/mug on middle shelf. Because it’s so big you loose the “whole” beauty of the plate! Just my opinion like I said. ❤
lose*
You could put a tea towel over the coffee maker when you're cooking something messy to stop it getting dirty.
I am not a minimalist. It feels so empty and cold to me. However, I can't stand clutter. It makes me nervous. I need to find a happy medium to fit my style. I'm downsizing now and I have one of those "craft rooms" that's just staring me down like a bully. I also have a ton of home decor for each season. Decorating is one of my passions. I will downsize but I can't see myself ever being a minimalist. Your Fiestaware is gorgeous!
I think seasonal decorating is dumb. There, I've said it. I am not American & cannot understand why people do this. And you have to store unseasonal stuff somewhere.
I know what time of year it is without having to turn my home into a kindergarten display. I am not a minimalist either but hate clutter & seasonal decor is the worst
clutter I can think of.
I am not a minimalist either, but like you, I hate clutter so I go through my house once a year and get rid of anything I no longer use or need. My one objection to the majority of minimalist styles, is the lack of any pictures on the walls. That’s something I would never do because it just feels too cold and impossible to feel cozy … but maybe that’s just me. ☺️
@@kathleenobara3229 I agree about the lack of pictures. With pictures I am a maximalist !
@@marty9011 - me too ☺️
My whole house, counters, walls cabinets are like gallery walls. I too hate clutter tho!
I have 2 coworkers who are right with you who have nothing on their countertops. I, on the other hand, lean toward practicality. The coffee maker near the cups, coffee/tea, and refrigerator wins over hiding it from view. I would lose my mind with so little counter next to the stove AND my husband trying to make coffee while I am cooking his eggs!
I hushed my living room and my kids thought it felt so peaceful, my husband said it looked clean, and my mom thought I got robbed. Haha. I realized some things didn't have to be in there and I put a lot less decor back in. It also took about 2 mins or less to tidy it up everyday. It was awesome. I need to refresh it again bc with 3 kids, clutter creeps in. Thank you for posting this video it's so helpful! I wanna do more rooms!
Yes coffee maker better there. Appliances are so hard to house! Just the pink things on ur shelves. No cloths or cake stands for a really zen vibe! Love it. Ps own kitchen is saying, hey look at me!!
Agree, those cloths are distracting and could go!!
Lol your kitchen is advocating for itself. 😊
I think it's too crowded by the stove.
Yeah, I think the shelving is looking too cluttered with things in front of other things. And there's still a sticker on the plate!
Agree, also, the plant should go on the top shelf, for height. I think maybe the one "collection" she allows herself is cake stands, so..... ???
That vase color with the white tulips is so beautiful!
While I do appreciate the Decluttering Inspiration, and I do understand all you are doing in your home and the reasons for it, I just am not a Minimalist! I do declutter weekly...and bring a box to the donation center every month...but I do like a decorated home; it makes my heart glad...and I guess that is what is comes down to! Your heart is glad... my heart is glad... win win for all! I still like to watch your channel, as it makes me go through drawers and boxes, and declutter, organize.... Your pink Fiestaware is so pretty! Love it!
I could see this working best for people who are trying to fine tune their spaces, or if you broke it down into small sections of a space. For those who are just starting and are drowning in clutter, I can see this method being super overwhelming. Emptying out a full room takes a lot of time and effort even if it doesn’t seem that cluttered.
I'd need to rent a POD and it would scream HUSH UP! LoL 🤣 ... but LOVE this for the final phase of this journey!
I agree. I have parts of my home ready for something like this, other parts not so much! I bet this is very useful for frequently used spaces like the kitchen- like she noted with the clear counters, there's a sense of "this would be so easy to clean up fast". And I think that's very valuable considering how often that space has to be cleaned!
Hard to do when you have clutter, in that phase of a designated space for said clutter while declutterring! I’m in the process and it’s a mess!
So breathable... So nice! And in addition Dawn I agree to remove the cake stands and the napkins hanging off the shelves.
I agree 😊
You LOVE your cake stands, they make you happy,so leave them, but I agree the napkins could probably go.
The napkins were the one thing I liked 😂
I have been doing this forever with my closets. Just the other day, I took everything out of the front closet. After I painted it, I found a much more functional way to put it back together. Some things were relocated, some tossed, and a coat to donate. Love the new feel so much better!
I just realized we did this when we put new flooring in our family room. We had converted it to a fitness room. My husband wanted to put everything back where it was. I insisted it was the perfect time to get rid of things and make it nicer. Afterwards he was so impressed and it’s probably the nicest, streamlined room in our home.
Hi Dawn. Thanks for this video and decluttering ideas. One tip I wanted to share that I learned from an organization conference (I can't remember who did the kitchen organization tips), is that your avocadoes will keep longer if you store them in the fridge drawer with lemons (or other citrus). I've found this helpful as avocadoes in particular seem to have such a short window where they're really good and they're too good (and expensive) to waste ;) We're always going in the fridge for something daily, so they're easy to spot and check when they're ripe.
Yes! Keep avos at room temp til not hard, then move to the fridge to slow ripening. Bananas and tomatoes will ripen avos FAST, so be careful sitting these fruits together. A hard avo will ripen in less than an hour in a paper bag with a tomato or banana.
We have found that they will ripen slowly in the fridge even if you put them in while they're still hard. And we don't find it necessary to store them with citrus. Ours are in a mini bin at eye level so we remember them.
@@lyndi9082 I knew about bananas but not tomatoes!
Avocados will last more than a week after ripe if you wrap in tin foil and keep in fridge. It works.
@@Prettynickle you can save yourself some foil. We store ours in the fridge and I don't wrap them or do anything special. I put them in the fridge when I bring them home from the store. They ripen slowly and last a very long time.
Nice concept. Here is a thing I do with produce. I remove the stickers. It makes them look better and takes away the clutter look of them. Crazy? Nope, try it. It “hushes” them. Try it. PS Remember, onions don’t mix well with potatoes. They will all go old fast. (Not that you did that.) Thanks!
I needed to know that. Thanks.
And don't forget to check the avocados regularly! The go bad quickly if left to go soft...... Is there butter in the butter dish? I would highly recommend that go into the refrigerator! Yikes!
@@sarahvogel1359 Refrigerated butter isn't spreadable...so annoying! We have left ours on the counter in a covered dish, in the air conditioning, for at least 40 years (since switching from margarine). I just looked it up and the USDA is ridiculous, saying only 2 days on the counter, but the kitchen/cooking sites say 2 weeks and all around the world people are just doing what works. 🙂 Salted butter, especially, isn't likely to go bad, and if it does--you can smell it! In colder climates especially, it's like leaving eggs at room temperature...only Americans are paranoid. 😁
We have our (salted) butter out all the time. We use one stick at a time and the others are in the fridge until needed. Never had an issue with butter going bad.
I didn't know about the potatoes and onions, that explains why my onions have been sprouting so quickly
The concept is good, good experiment.
The coffee maker - I think it works better where it was .
Personally, I gave up the coffee maker and switched to the pour over method. Smaller vessels, less to store and they start out clean every day. Coffee makers are a breeding ground for bacteria, the insides never dry out and most don't get cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis. The coffee tastes better with pour over and recommended by all coffee roasters
Yes love the pour over and French press best! Soooo fast, easy and delicious ... especially with locally roasted beans!
Yes from me too! I don’t drink coffee. My son got a pour over and we closeted the Keurig. I love having that emptier space on my counter!
The Minimal Mom and the Nester is a DREAM PAIRING
I love this method! I almost always used it when decluttering my old room, but I never though of the 24 hours wait.
I find it funny that you say that the room is pretty minimal already, but then you have three entire shelves dedicated to (and full to the brim of) decor items.
I put a dish towel around/over items that must set beside my stove when cooking something that splatters. Don’t put fruit or vegetables near each other on counters, in cabinets, on shelves or in refrigerator. They give off gases that cause the other to rot/breakdown faster.
Interesting idea, but kinda loses the point to remove things to only purchase more items to take their place - like new decor w/out getting of the old removed items 🤷♀️I do like the idea of emptying a room, professional interior decorators do it all the time.
Great idea to let the space breathe for 24 hours before putting it back. I will try this with the open shelves in my home office. Then maybe try in the kitchen as I've been wanting to clear my counters one day.
The coffee maker deserves a prominent place. Just because it's a De'Longhi. ❤😊 Good choice!
The beauty of radical decluttering is that items you really love can shine, like your fiesta ware. I really like how the pitcher on the table pulls out the corals in the wall art. Looks great ! The coffee pot on left of the stove makes total sense ! Thank-you Dawn for another great video.
I totally love the pink. I keep running across jibes about people being surprised that you had the tulips and that makes me sad. My house is so terribly cluttered that I can’t really appreciate my beautiful things because of the visual noise. I hope that one day I will be brave enough to really declutter but until I do I can still appreciate what Dawn has done. I was telling a young struggling mom tonight that she doesn’t need a bigger house she needs to minimize and the sooner she does the better but it’s really amazing how invested we are in our things to the point that our relationships can actually be put on the back burner. Who cares if I’m the homesteading, quilting, canning, queen if my kitchen and living areas are so cluttered that I can’t have company😢
I am not going to do a whole room but I am going to hush the side of my fridge! I know that sounds like a small project but I love the idea :) I have sentimental pictures, notes, and quotes on it & have been toying with the thought of taking them down. I am curious see what I miss after 24 hours. Then I'll only put the missed ones back up. I bet I'll have less :) Thanks! xoxo
I’ve been thinking of this for months! The sides and front of our fridge are covered with photos. I love them and love looking at them, but wonder if it might not be better to put them in a collage to go in the upstairs hallway.
I ended up putting my most cherished photos in a little photo book that I keep open on the coffee table. I love that they aren’t on the walls, and people love looking through them. Many mornings I look at them as I drink my coffee, that keeps me off my phone
I think the biggest "transition" in a persons stage of life, are the senior years. So much change to adjust too, and a lot of epiphanies you now have time to realize. "Mom's" don't get to be themselves until later in life......things I thought where circumstances or learned, are really me. I really can't find my way out of a paper bag, I'll get lost going around the block......and if I don't see it, or go looking for it, I don't remember I have it:( Welcome to my world....These videos are a great guide in how to get from a to z and learn a little something about yourself. Instead of open shelves for my art supplies.......cabinets with doors and displays where I can "see" everything when I open them. A win win.......Thank you:)
I recently did this to the outside of my refrigerator. We like to have photos, magnet momentos, and "artwork" from small friends of the family. But it had become overwhelming! I took all of it off and it truly felt like we were moving! Soooo weird. I decluttered a lot of what had been on there, then selectively put back our favorites in an organized layout. Now it feels like special memories on display instead of clutter.
I love my very ‘cluttered’ refrigerator door - I hate the look of naked refrigerators.
Bananas release ethylene which makes fruit and produce around it ripen faster, which can lead to things going bad quicker. Just a heads up that if it's trapped in a cupboard that everything could become soft or brown much faster.
I was thinking the same thing. Dawn, everything looks so beautiful and fresh and minimal - I love it!! Love the decor! I think a little fruit bowl on the island for the bananas could be a good idea without being too much. The two tiered fruit basket looks great but I see how it could become a bit much over time with how tall it is. Let us know how you go with the fruit in the cupboard!
Same with Avocado
If you want kids to have fruit as a snack they can help themselve to, they need to see it.
Love the hushed room! ❤ I read that bananas and avocados don’t like to be housed in the same area. You might find they ripen too fast. I love the coffee maker in the new spot. If it works, you might consider what Cas suggests and move your mugs and coffees/tea supplies over there too. More reshuffling, but you might love it! ❤
I thought of this too! Same with the butter. It may work to move it closest to the toaster. I actually house both together in my cupboard.
Dawn, I LOVE the flowerpot and tulips so much!!! The open shelves are pretty, but they feel too busy. What if you put just the large glass one that is on top, on top in the center. (With the napkin just like it is.) Then on the second shelf, keep the plant and scoot it towards the center just a bit. Also put the rose glasses to the right of the plant. Leave a little space between them. Remove the wooden cake plate and put the rose plate and white mixing bowl, just one shelf down. Keep the clear one on the bottom where it is. Maybe use the peach Pyrex bowl and put it on the counter with fruit in it. It all looks very pretty so don't think you have to use these ideas. LOVE this video and the resting concept! ❤❤❤
Just a thought: in Denmark we have butter dish in fridge and take it out shortly before using it.
And… you have 4 chairs around your dining table, but you are 6 to eat. Who does not eat with the rest of you??? 😎
I wondered that too with the chairs!
The island has barstools
I think that is a butter bell wigh water in the bottom it keeps it fresh at room temp.
Not sure I’m actually a minimalist. I was just thinking how cute peachy colored chair cushions would look with that Fiesta vase. Lol. Plus that color scheme is nice. Soft as if it’s gently whispering to you. It’s a little pop of color but it’s not a “screaming” pop. Softens and warms everything up just a bit.
Why do you have only four chairs at your dining room table when there are six members in your family? And where are the extra chairs?
Haha this always intrigues me too 😂
My kitchen is even smaller so I have no choice to have appliances on counter but I make sure one counter is completely free but I wish I could put away machine and toaster but it would drive hubby crazy lol so I have to compromise
She mentioned in a previous video that they use the island for additional seating during meals.
Love this... will say that our toddler has forced lots of hushed surfaces in our house😅 a very creative kiddo
What a little visionary 😅
Toddlers will do that and I love it. Forces me to keep things in perspective ❤
This is great. I had plenty of empty spaces when my ex hoarder moved out and I couldn’t believe the power of an empty space. I do a Wonder Woman twirl in every space to celebrate the space. I’m only putting stuff in the rooms that need to be there and feel right. ❤
After following Minimalist ideas for 10 years now, this idea is one of THE best I’ve ever heard! “Hushing my house” is my new mantra and my new minimalism model going forward.
I love the tulips with the Fiestaware pitcher & the pops of color. Just enough decor. to make it look nice, but not cluttered! Well done!
Dawn, I think the coffee machine is better over by the fridge, it’s next to your mugs and milk from the fridge, also extra pods
Love the idea of “quiet” decluttering and reassessing objects,or replacing them, with something new. Even rearranging stuff gives it a nice new feel. Thanks for sharing.
But doesn't that defeat the purpose since you purchased more items????
🤣
My brain was like wait what. Not to mention bare shelves looks worse 😅
I am on wk 3 of decluttering my sewing / craft room. We took everything out of the closet to put in shelves & when we put things away for the night, we cramped it all back in the closet. I actually hated seeing it like that, even if it was just for overnight. I am going to take another layer off my onion & declutter even more. Great video. 😊
Try You Tube Just Get it Done. 21 day declutter challenge. This is my second year. Easier this time.
I like Karen's videos too.
....I just did that...... and found a High School sewing group that loved to get my stuff. I was so happy to find a great use for it.
That's awesome. I have a friend who teaches a sewing class & an art class. I am gifting her my giveaways. 😊
Clutter makes me anxious and I always love watching your videos. We don’t have the exact same design style but I do love so many rooms in your house and the way you put them together I can’t help but say I would try taking away the fabric hanging down from the kitchen shelves For sure. And maybe even having some empty space on the shelves? Just a thought. I know we are two different people and it is your house.
Your before kitchen is way tidyier than my kitchen! I have a lot of work to do. Thanks for inspiration. I think I have to start with my cabinets.
I always hush the house when changing the decir from season to season. Although I didn't know that is what it's called. It's so peaceful.
Love Minimal Tuesdays!!! Excited to try hushing a couple rooms!
About once every other year, I clear out one room completely to wash walls and repaint, then I put things back in and inevitably, about 2/3’s of the items get put back in the room- bedrooms, living room, kitchen, baths, laundry- each room gets emptied, one room at a time- either the dump or our favorite thrift store gets the items I no longer use or desire. The house always look like a new remodel and fresh!
Hi Dawn. Thanks for walking us through "hush". I am curious though.... your table is only a 4 person table.... but you are a family of 6. So does that mean that all 6 of you do not sit down to dinner together (ie around 1 table)?
I’m shocked that you had those flowers for 2 years and didn’t declutter them. 😮
Hahahaha! She's a *real* person... She had the space to hold them, a "Time will tell bin." It told her... Now's the time! 😂🥰😅🥰 I love them! But I'd rather have real ones, always!
I think we can get so used to seeing things that you don’t even notice them
I totally love the idea of having the new coffee maker on the counter at the left of the stove!!
That's a great corner spot...less visible...and keeps the whole area to the right of the sink with nothing on it...that will really showcase your 3 shelves... because nothing is competing for visual interest!!
I just chuckled with the whole "take it out, but bring even more into your house, just put it somewhere else" That type of thinking makes me even more crazy For me, it just moves the clutter and stuff around. I have seen this type of decluttering before and have been toying with the idea. I think it's just what I need to just go bare first. Love the clean home.
Yeah, you need some house plants! Bring it to life with a breath of fresh air.
We reached a MAJOR milestone this weekend. We can finaly park our car INSIDE the garage. My husband and I agreed that if we replace our old car, we have to store the new one in the garage.
Thanks so much for all your ideas. I’m at the stage of letting go & down sizing. I don’t think I’ll ever be a minimalist. But I’m liking the clear counter tops.
I think my next room is the master bedroom. 😅❤
Love the idea and the new vintage vibe. But, as an outsider, looking via a screen, the shelves seem too cluttered to me. I would move that big greenery pice from the middle shelf where it seems “stuffed in there,” and overpowers. I would try IT on the top shelf and work your vibe down from there. The napkins or mats seem like too much, too. The coffeemaker placement seems genius to me. How do you like it as the days go by. Butter dish goes nicely and doesn’t stand out or disrupt your decor vibe.
Now, I have to get up and take my own advice, as well as yours. Great work.❤
Agree
be aware that storing bananas in an enclosed space with avocado will ripen the avocados quicker. ❤ Love the idea of hushing the home
The pitcher filled with Tulips is my favorite. I have a yellow one like it, I put out for Spring 😄
You should store a cake stand in the basement and put your mugs on the right of the bottom shelves
I agree, the pink cups on the metal cake stand look odd to me.
@@sct4040I like that there is a pink item on each shelf, but option to have the white mugs (Something she uses every day) on the right side of the bottom shelf vs impacting space in another cupboard :)
This is so funny. I did this recently because of my cat. I took the very few decor items I had out and put them away for safe keeping. After a couple of weeks I realized how calm the bedroom felt. It was so easy to dust. I am keeping the surfaces clear. I like what you did Dawn!!!!
I actually like my house to look like no one lives in it,gosh it’s super easy to keep clean, not for every body but as the crafter Tim Holtz says ‘you do you’ suits us so it’s not changing.😂😊
Love the slightly different tones of peachy/orangey/pinks! Just like in nature. Our eyes need different tones of the same color and some texture/pattern. It is so nice when you declutter enough that you can actually play with colors and texture and feel what is just the right touches in the right amounts for the moment. And just like in nature, those have to vary throughout the year.
We are not crazy for wanting to rearrange decor every few months. We don’t have to make huge changes every time but I do believe it is a human need to have varying colors and interest in our environments. It also validates me as an artist.
I could totally see a large vertical piece of juicy art to the right of your kitchen window. Not a forever commitment, but I’d be thrilled to see colorful art tried in your beautiful “clean-slate” of a home! 😁
Personally I would bring back things useful to everyday use over things that sit and collect dust on a shelf.
Hi Dawn
You are so fortunate to have a basement where you can store things temporarily while you are trying this out. I like the idea of clean counters, but am at a loss where to put the heavy items like the Instant Pot, the Kitchen Aid stand mixer, the Ninja Blender, and the toaster oven, all of which currently live on my counters. Also, the idea of having to lift them all the time if I did find another place for them is not at all appealing. Your thoughts?
I borrowed space from the dining room next to my kitchen for a deep bookshelf at the end of one kitchen counter that fits my microwave with toaster oven on top and room for some other appliances (toaster, blender. They're all at heights that are easily usable without moving anything, and storing cookbooks below and hanging art above helps it visually transition to the non-kitchen space. : - )
Hi, Dawn. Long time follower. Just my opinion, but try flipping sides for the cups and cake pedestal on the bottom shelf. This way the two cake pedestals (top shelf and bottom shelf) are opposite each other. It's a "weight"/balance thing! Keep up the helpful content. ❤ ya!
The tulips are one of my most favorite Amazon purchases. I have them in a few different colors and they are all I use for my spring decor. 🌷
This is a super cool idea. The pink looks great on that shelf 😊
Coffee bar around the corner in the table area. I did this and it clears clutter out of my kitchen. I had an ice maker too and moved it to the bar. Coffee cups and supplies in the cabinet. Love it.
I ditched the fruit basket too! Before bed NOW I completely clear the counter!
I swear I’m sleeping better for it😂
I love the table decor!!!
It really carries the color scheme from the kitchen to the dining table!!
I love the refreshed Spring look of the little touches of pink! And it pulls out the pink in the pictures hanging in the Dining Room, too. It just all looks so light and airy and nice. Well done, Dawn!
I am 75 and really enjoy your channel Thank you Dawn for fresh ideas and pleasure you give me. I am a lifelong minimalist and life simplifier.I have always found too many possessions a burden.I absolutely have to have counters as clears possible . I only have a large toaster and air fryer out. I would love nothing.
Fruit basket stand would be cute to hold small house plants.
I was skeptical when I saw the title, but loved watching the experiment! I might try this over the next few weekends in some different spaces.
The pitcher and tulips look so pretty!
Make a coffee/tea corner. The cabinet above would be great to have coffee creamer mugs etc in .. all in one place
Definitely Kitchen! I loved this idea and I want to get her first book (looking for cozy these days). I tried setting the kitchen table nicely with plates and mats and napkins. Everyone avoided using them. The plates slid around on the chargers, no one wanted to use the cloth napkins, so I wound up taking it all off except for the placemats. I have decor and functional things on the counter. No one ever puts the air fryer back in the pantry (except me), but I'm determined to get that big thing off the counter. I agree - can't hide the coffee maker. When she says "decor" does she also mean pictures or plate hangers on the wall? Not sure how far decor goes. I absolutely love the Fiesta ware pitcher on the dining room table.
I don’t think the fruit will be eaten if it is out of sight. I would put it in the top half of your neat looking fruit basket and put it on the bottom wall shelf. That way it is off the counter but still visible and reachable. Those three shelves look a bit crowded anyway.
I got a flower pot stand on wheels and put some of my heavy appliances on these, so it is easy to move on the counters for cleaning. The coffee pot beside your stove looks congested (sorry), and I'd fix the broken/nonfunctional burners. Also too many decor items on the open shelving - looks cluttered - suggested removing the multiple cake stands like someone else here mentioned.
I just did this unintentionally in our master bathroom. We had the shower remodeled, so everything came out. I've only brought back in 1 decorative piece. The rest I've decided to donate. I'm loving the simplicity and leaving the new shower as the focal point.
Omg! I’ve moved out all my chachkas & decor from my living room & bathroom. Loving the clean slate ❤
Excited to redo & shop my house to re-design in few days :)
Love this decluttering/redesign concept!
I like it all, but I would find another cute pink bowl and display the fruit out on the island.
I am painting rooms 1 at a time. I’ve had to move everything out. I use this concept when I move back in. It’s been amazing! Before, I had piles everywhere. I’ve donated or thrown away a ton of items.😊
I love the basket in the cabinet for produce! I always kept it on my counter, not thinking there could be another location for it... YAY!!!
On the stairwell, there's a ledge that makes 3 sides of a square, that you can put decor on. I had a lot of random things on it, mostly sentimental items. I recently (a couple of months ago) decided it looked too cluttered. So I removed everything, and left it blank for a few days to decide what to add back in, if anything. My kids hated it! They thought it looked too empty! I eventually decided to add fake plants, and they helped me decide which ones to buy. I love it now!
