      Luckily I never had to do it. I go step by step, checking all my stuff once a year to do a big declutter, little by little. I once was too attached to things so it takes a lot of energy for me to part with stuff.

    I really liked your response about clutter being an opportunity for generosity and how there’s a difference between abundance and wealth. Letting go of things is more about our reluctance to part with our association with those things. It’s so true that poverty is a mindset and that you can be happy even if you’re broke. Thank you for this reminder, much love to you!

    During a cross country, U-Haul move a few years back, my truck was broken into and about 14 to 16 boxes of my things were stolen. At first, it really bothered me for a long time, but then, as you were saying here, there was just this tremendous sense of freedom at some point because even though those things had been taken from me against my will, it did make me realize that stuff is just stuff, no matter where or who it came from, and it has made it so much easier for me to go forward and just let go of things. Which results in my feeling lighter and clearer and more excited about living my life.

Christmas toys that were donated by local charities to my mom... i put myself through college and now as an adult i have accumulated things that i never could have had when i was young. I have a large collection of dolls that ive spent at least $1000 on. I have a collection of gaming things. I don’t know the age of the son with the music equipment but I would put my foot down and say, “I’m not paying for the storage unit any longer and I don’t want any of that stuff in the house so if you want to keep that stuff you got to pay for storing it.” Then get your stuff out of there and give him the option of keeping that unit or getting a smaller cheaper unit. I’d also have him calculate the cost of storage and the cost of his stuff and see if he might be better off selling that stuff and replacing the equipment at another time.

At the time we where four under the same roof and it a so bad. Both parents are horders and hygene is out of question. When they came back mom got so mad.. BUT HN SHE KINDA SETTLED WITH IT and realized she didnt miss the things, she actully very slowly started declutter. It still really bad and when they die we prob have to burn the house BUT i think her mind changed a bit even tho she still have the «keep in case» or sentimental mind.

    I had bed bugs for three years I tried everything. My daughter had toys and clothes. One day I mixed apple cider vinegar and lavender oil. I sprayed it every where just once and the bed bugs disappeared. I know if you put you furniture outside in the sun they don't like heat for clothing I washed everything and had put in the dryer the heat kills them by drying them out. I bought bed bugs covers for the bed mattress and zipped them in they can last a year without blood. After that they dry out and die. I still own my furniture and clothes. I don't have to throw away and spend money to buy new things. I can do it right and when time passes give away to a goodwill or give to some one who needs it but done right everything can be cleaned and saved.

    What is the end goal though? I have an antique looking phone on my wall that's not functional, but decorative. Same with a wall piano in the living room.
    I have a china cabinet that's full of various things that I may or may not need at some point, but if I emptied out all the drawers, then what?
    Should I get rid of these "unfunctional" things?
    Is the goal to have a completely empty house except for the bare necessities?
    At what point do you stop the minimalism?
    I think some people find comfort in the unusable things that surround them because they are familiar and remind them of different things.
    If I took down all of the picture frames from my walls and just had the memories in my mind that would be fine, but there's a reason that people hang them up.
    Same with knock nacks.
    If we get rid of everything sentimental or things that remind us of other things, then we would just be living in an institutionalized cell and it would be very similar to old people that I have seen in nursing homes where they only have a few belongings and just a couple of things that remind them of the life that they used to live.
    I'm torn between minimalism and sentiment.
    Part of me wants to empty my house of everything that I don't use on a daily basis. But I also know that I would end up with an empty house and then what?

    • @bryanroberts2229
      @bryanroberts2229 3 месяца назад +2

      Maybe that's the point, why you want to keep these "nick nacks".....you want to forget that your living in an institutionalised cell.....

    • @AuRowe
      @AuRowe 3 месяца назад

      In my mind if theres a need to keep the idea of a memory alive with stuff its actual neurosis. Doesn't mean nivk nacks are evil.
      People forget how valuable of a canvas some empty space can be, even mentally. When ive lost photo albums it makes me realize how much I kept memories in photos and essentially wouldn't remember non photoed memories the same way.
      Only so much mental space so why not let yourself naturally hold onto the valuable memories instead of grasping for the idea of what you think "was" through the sentimental items.

Those bed bugs are long since dead, there is no host in which to feed off of, so she's making her son suffer for her ignorance and fear. This isn't a story of a hoarder, this is a story of a mother projecting her neurosis onto her kid who just wants his gear back. Madness. By all means, trash your things, don't make the kid suffer cuz you're out of touch.
