One of the key strengths of the Ioniq 5N is its temperature management. Most EVs can’t last long on the track because they overheat, but the Ioniq 5N handles that really well. When you drive it on the track, it offers advantages that are usually only seen with ICE cars. Another major benefit is its versatility. Great video.I am amazed,I have been waiting for someone to make an engaging EV for petrol heads.I know the sound is fake , but it’s only sound , and if it’s the same sound as an engine and the gear shifts are tuned in then your brain will get the same sensory enjoyment as if it’s a petrol engine. Does it have fake exhaust smell too.
I recall racing a Hyundai Veloster with my mini and i will say that Hyundai’s pop into acceleration quickly but as it would be the mini caught & pass it 🏁
Two words ….. want one! Three words …..Dear Father Xmas Four words ….. If I won lottery Epic video Joe best video ever I reckon and I am not an EV fan!
Great review! Worth mentioning that they get the “gear shifts” by the software momentarily pinching the brakes, to give the “jerk” sensation of a gear change. So having it in full EV mode is always actually faster. Just not as much fun! I thought the N version of the Ioniq 5 would be a waste of time: “too fat, too heavy!” How wrong I was! I drive an Ioniq 5 P45. Just gone 3 years. A great all round car. But always prefer lightweights. (Own an Ariel Atom for fun days out). I know we have all been pronouncing Hyundai wrong all these years, hence the advertising campaign to get us to say it right but where did you get “Hin-dee” from?🤣😂
Good question and something I forgot to mention in the film! It was on par with the majority of combustion engine cars I've tried at Bedford, probably 16-20 laps of the full GT circuit. Bedford town (8-10 mins away) now has a number of fast charges, I popped there for lunch and again on route home 👌
Hi Joe Not even sure if you will see this but if you do, now that BMW own (or are about to own) Alpina, any chance of reviewing a B3 GT. Thanks All the best from Aus.
Over a second slower to 62 with the e-shift mode activated vs regular EV mode, but it seems to "feel" faster to people because of the noise and ramping onset of torque.
@@ghepardogts Definitely fun and engaging to row through gears; just interesting that professional drivers on a track would choose the objectively less powerful drive mode.
@@bfvaderit's not all about time. And it's not that much slower, definitely not a full second, only did it once but iirc it was only 0,35s difference to 60. And a lot of the dragraces out there testing the "shift gimmick" on a run were actually short shifting, going fast requires some skill then... which is the whole fun part (and after the initial kick in full EV mode actually feels faster) but also the part where the gears help 'calibrate' ones speed perception....
@@onehorsepower I agree its not all about times on the road, but on a track I think it is. When I autocross my EV6GT it's definitely about getting the best times I can and improving on those. The tests I've seen show 2.8-3sec 0-60 with full EV mode w/ NGB while the eShift mode is in the 3.7-3.8sec range. Using the red NGB button disables the fake gears and gives you an extra 40hp for 10sec. On a track you also can't use the nPedal mode to give you almost 1G of motor regen to save your brakes and give you additional stopping power. Using the shift mode you're getting a slower, less consistent delivery of power; lower overall power; and less powerful braking. It is much more familiar for a performance driver transitioning to EV to have "gears" as checkpoints for speed, but I promise after a few months pushing an EV hard you get to know the sound of the motors and can hear your tires working a lot more than with any ICE car I've driven hard.
So do the "gears" actually do anything, I did see the simulated rev limit, but do downshifts feel as if they're slowing the car as it would with an actual transmission or is all just a simulation with no real effect on driving dynamics?
When downshifting, you feel actual shift impacts like in a real engine vehicle, and the speed is similarly affected. It’s not 100% perfect, but using the N-e shift mode will probably make you feel like you’re driving a real engine vehicle in the Ioniq 5 N.
Yes, the software simulates a torque curve by limiting output through the RPM range, it blips power during gear transitions, it uses regen to simulate engine braking, and it will even bounce off the rev limiter and cut power if you don't shift. It's a full on simulated engine and gearbox. The trade off is that if you are in a situation where you want full power you would actually turn all of these features off since they work on limiting power. If you actually wanted a real lap time or 0-60 time you will do better disabling all the toys. This whole thing is purely for fun and driver feedback, not performance.
I know that probably feels so much like my motion sim in the house(actually better because it's a real car). The only that is you can't go to the menus in real life and switch cars.
... but you're on to something. Flick it into eco and it becomes a quiet, smooth effortless driving experience. And it's very roomy inside. In effect combining properties of many different cars, at the push of a button, that are very hard to find in one package otherwise...
Love the use of the fakery. Maybe the fake engine “Iconic Sounds” in my LCI1 M340i Touring has opened my mind up to it. But this application in an EV is a whole other level and makes complete sense, look forward to seeing what path BMW M go down to make fun EVs.. 😅
Why does it have paddle shifters? I thought it was just one gear…. So it has a fake limiter? Can you pass the limiter or do you HAVE to shift to go faster?
My favourite😍
Now I understand your praise and excitement mate 😁

Didn't want to give it back 🙌
@@JoeAchilles1 😂😂 hmm space in the garage for a JA Spec version 💥
Battery now makes us smile🫶
😁😁😁
형이 왜 여기서 나옴?
How much battery did it use for the day of hooning?
Hyundai have been the most exciting brand out there for a few years now don’t @ me
I recall racing a Hyundai Veloster with my mini and i will say that Hyundai’s pop into acceleration quickly but as it would be the mini caught & pass it 🏁
So is the engine sound coming through the speakers?😂looks fun! Still
Would prefer an M2 me thinks
Two words ….. want one!
Three words …..Dear Father Xmas
Four words ….. If I won lottery
Epic video Joe best video ever I reckon and I am not an EV fan!
Had me giggling too!
😂😂😂👌
Great review! Worth mentioning that they get the “gear shifts” by the software momentarily pinching the brakes, to give the “jerk” sensation of a gear change. So having it in full EV mode is always actually faster. Just not as much fun! I thought the N version of the Ioniq 5 would be a waste of time: “too fat, too heavy!” How wrong I was! I drive an Ioniq 5 P45. Just gone 3 years. A great all round car. But always prefer lightweights. (Own an Ariel Atom for fun days out). I know we have all been pronouncing Hyundai wrong all these years, hence the advertising campaign to get us to say it right but where did you get “Hin-dee” from?🤣😂
Nice 👌
Hi Joe, thanks for the video. I would be interested to know how many laps you get out of it before needing to charge the batteries.

나는 이 자동차를 타봤기때문에 변속충격. 역화현상. 노면굴곡에따라 요동치는 소리 까지 알고 있다

What? A sunroof/skylight too? Zounds!
Question is: Would you prefer it to your M2? 😉
I think i will be in the market for a fun Daily next year and considering the M2 F87, G87 or I5N.
Hi Joe
Not even sure if you will see this but if you do, now that BMW own (or are about to own) Alpina, any chance of reviewing a B3 GT.
Thanks
All the best from Aus.
Most fun EV on the market? Looks hilarious on the track!
Needs more N badges
If Porsche haven’t got their software team onto this for the new ev Boxster/Cayman cars then they need to with some urgency.
Over a second slower to 62 with the e-shift mode activated vs regular EV mode, but it seems to "feel" faster to people because of the noise and ramping onset of torque.
Plenty of people love slower manual cars just for the fun of it. A little virtual shifting would be fun when the mood strikes.
Don’t tell Lou - you may need to get one !
Hi Joe! Any chance you can review the Ferrari 12 Cylindri?
@JoeAchilles1 Looks a lot of fun! How many laps / how much time on track between charges, and how long to recharge?
Well done Hyundai for trying to cater to those who will miss petrol when it’s gone. The car sounds great
I know that probably feels so much like my motion sim in the house(actually better because it's a real car).
Hey Joe, good video, did you have a chance to drive it on the road by any chance? If so how does it fare?
I still hope for an I30N with the same EV specification like 5N ...
When do you get your hands on the new 1 series, Joe??
so much fun~
Love the use of the fakery. Maybe the fake engine “Iconic Sounds” in my LCI1 M340i Touring has opened my mind up to it. But this application in an EV is a whole other level and makes complete sense, look forward to seeing what path BMW M go down to make fun EVs.. 😅
I initially thought that people in the car smoked marijuana before getting in. 😂😂😂
Joe what vehicles do you currently own? And do you still own a daily driver?
Why does it have paddle shifters? I thought it was just one gear…. So it has a fake limiter? Can you pass the limiter or do you HAVE to shift to go faster?
