I've wanted one since I first heard about them! Your video really makes me want one now. I'd tone down the exterior a little to make it more of a sleeper
"It just turns people off, because of the lack of engagement." Only some of us. It's only a certain subset of people, even only a certain subset of car enthusiasts, that really seem to care about the driving "experience" or feel. MOST people don't care much at all as long as a car is reasonably comfortable, and even a lot of "enthusiasts" only care about that straight line acceleration and think a Model S Plaid is the holy grail of cars. And let's face it, a pretty decent percentage of those that DO care...aren't interested in an EV on principal (however irrational it may be) alone, or at the very least for the hassle of having to charge one instead of just hitting a gas station whenever it's necessary. Also there's still that Hyundai and Kia perception that lingers despite their improvements over the last however many years. So while I think what Hyundai has done is very impressive, I have a vague doubt that it will sell in any numbers worth noting.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N achieves its "engine sound" through a feature called "N e-Shift" which is essentially a software-based system that simulates the sounds and feel of a traditional gasoline engine with multiple gears, even though the car only has one gear..😊
There's the rub. It's actually cutting the power to simulate the transmission. When Honda did the simulated shifting on their CVT's, I thought that was silly. Now this. That said... it's an EV that actually has a driving experience. So I may own one someday, if I ever have a commute, again.
@@robsolf Actually, the regenerative braking paddles mounted to the steering wheel suddenly become gear shifters, and the sound of the "engine" rises and lowers as you move through each "gear." Without cutting the power off, it's a amazing system! 😀
you have me sold, and im a diesel dude. Hyundai should sponsor this video, and you deserve some kickbacks. You made it seem pretty fun to drive. I would operate it in f1 mode on the daily. Also, can you bump music and still get the car sound at the same time?
I think this is a step in the right direction for EVs. I'd like to see them try making the ioniq car with a "6 speed stick and 3 pedals" There are a lot of classic cars with tesla swaps and they are still manual. Obviously it wouldn't go far but it'll definitely be fun
It'd be cool if you could customise the engine audio sounds and make them whatever audio file you like. For example, audio of Beetle Juice making car sounds would be sick
Actually a big fan of this car. Was scrolling through FB a while back and came across a post where a guy was talking about how the ioniq 5 n allowed him to enjoy cars again after a traumatic accident left him with ptsd when driving a combustion engine vehicles geared towards performance. I would love to get the chance to drive one of these
PTSD don’t matter if it’s gas or EV being behind the wheel is still being behind the wheel, don’t be gay and drive a EV just go back out and get in a real man’s car that’s powered by something great, unless you wanna blast your fake car noises out your speakers lmao
Haters gonna hate, but this is a step in the right direction. What id like to see is a more analog experience. A trans mated to something like this that also doesn't look like an EV. Change torque and HP curves at the flip of the switch for different driving characteristics, for example: emulated lag of a big turbo vs low end torque of a small turbo, etc.
I got the Niro ev. Definitely a car enthusiast. I just don’t care about owning fast cars anymore. I live in an area with too much traffic to ever really enjoy a fast car. I also don’t make enough money to be a track rat. So I ride a fast motorcycle because why would I want to sit in traffic with the peasants. I like the single gear transmission bc I sit in stop and go traffic everyday. I’m someone who prefers a manual in traffic because auto transmissions get jerky in slow moving traffic, and it drives me crazy. The single gear is always smooth, and with single pedal braking. I rarely put any wear on the pads.
The physical simulation of having a gearbox is probably what makes it engaging to drive. The simulated sounds are terrible. NFSU2 has better engine sounds than a 70k computer on wheels. If the idea of this vehicle is to have fun from both an engineering aspect and the driving aspect, then Hyundai should find a way to allow user created sounds to be used. They could host a community for sharing different sounds from one person to the next. Much like modding a racing game with different sound files. Users could make any sound they want! Want a Ferrari V12 screaming in your ears? Sure! Want a more realistic approach and use an Elantra N sound with a big turbo and loud BOV? Absolutely! Fusing the element of modding video games as a way to mod the car would be a very interesting experience. If it's essentially a "racing sim on wheels", then allow the experience to reflect that. At that point, I would even be really interested if it wasn't for the price. Paying 70k for "the most engaging EV experience" is wild considering you can spend the same amount and far less on a vehicle that's league's better for fun and engagement. It's a tough sell to its target market.
Even just watching this video and looking away, I exect David to switch to an outside muffler shot because of the sound, then I stop and go "oh wait..."
I can confidently say this. Besides the Taycan Turbo S, I'd genuinely be interested to test drive, or even rent for a day or 2, the Ioniq5N. I'm really impressed with what Hyundai did. They seemingly thought of everything l, and I LOVE how it looks
when i had my GLI for a few months it also had a speaker in the dash to add "engine" sound and there were def times I left it on without realizing it and thought this isn't too bad.
At the end of the day, EV’s will always be chasing the feel of an ICE powered vehicle. The spirit of design, the soul of the car, the emotion of the experience, the senses it triggers is completely different. The EV will always be an imitation, and we’re just going to have to accept that part. Edit: I liked the line “it’s a feat of engineering.” I still appreciate the amount of thought that Hyundai put into this car.
@@pstarke1066 that’s a good point. Interesting thing about trends is that they ebb and flow. Will be interesting to see what we have to say in a decade.

That's actually one of the hilarious things about this car. All the fakery nearly perfectly emulates the feel of an ICE car, including all the faults. The computers limit power if you bounce off redline and simulates the feel of it as well. If you put your foot down in too high of a gear, it simulates the feel of bogging the engine. All of these things are unnecessary and actually make the car slower. But it makes it feel engaging.

because of that ps2 type sound, makes it even better
Another person commented "Fun facts I found out about the fake sounds. The "Evolution" sound is the same sound from the Hyundai prototype LeMans concept car in Gran Turismo and the "Supersonic" conceived when Top Gun: Maverick was in theatres in Korea. The engineers were so enamored with the film that they wanted a F/A-18 sound in th car, too."
Plus they can make it sound like literally any car if they choose to give you more options later on via update
@@isaacm6560 Soon enough we'll be pirating engine sounds from other cars!
I personally really love the fake futuristic cyber sounding motor sounds. I wish they were a bit more intense and cyberpunk feeling though!
This is one of the few Korean cars for the mainstream that can compete with cars twice it's price range.
There are drag videos floating around on YT where this thing kills supercars, and almost able to keep up with hyper cars!
One of the few electrical cars thats interesting to look at
Still will be burning dinosaurs till I can’t do it anymore. But interesting car nonetheless is amazing on from the Chevrolet EV-1 "scandal" to what we have today. Interesting point of view on the car industry how far has become in the past 28 years.
Yeah, don't worry about burning dinosaurs, oil doesn't come from them
@teamracing6 yes! You win!
Win win.... charging it burns dinos!!
I saw this car today when I was buying a 22 Veloster N manual and it is way more intimidating in person lol
You missed the sonic boom when in Supersonic mode
I’m just watching with a huge smile and giggling to myself watching this! Idk what this means but I’m excited for it haha!
15:56 I think our problem it’s the price and not the car gimmicks 🤷🏼.. I’ve been a fan of Hyundai when I bought my 2015 veloster turbo and now I own the 2021 VN DCT . I would consider this 5N if the price was right .
You comment that a blindfolded person may not be able to tell that it's not a combustion car, but in every video I've seen it sounds like the fake engine sounds from a PlayStation 1 era game. Is it quite different in person?
The sounds not really different in person, it's the way the car "shifts" + sound that can trick people
Yeah it’s gay and a waste of money Xbox on wheels, just buy a real car with a real transmission then it wont sound like a PlayStation, and any real car guy blind and all will be able to tell that ain’t real there’s a lot of outside noise in a real car with backfire and smells and all plus no real car guy would ever buy one in the first place

Kinda insane detail, but you can see David's body "shift" as he "upshifts" between gears. That's a wild attention to detail Hyundai
Had one at a local autox event thing was absolutely insane really nice touch that Hyundai did to make an ev fun
I've ridden in that specific car...and it is IMPRESSIVE!
People just hate on Hyundai for their failures but not for the things they do right!
And this car is a blast!! All their N models are amazing!
I honestly love the evolution sound too, would absolutely love to own one of these
I’m just glad they put a rear wiper on it.
I've wanted one since I first heard about them! Your video really makes me want one now.
I'd tone down the exterior a little to make it more of a sleeper
"It just turns people off, because of the lack of engagement."
Only some of us.
I like the "Supersonic" sound in Auto mode. But "Evolution" sound it peak "F1 flappy paddles".
@@robsolf I mean it has to cut power to feel right, and if you don't want it to it has other modes and most of them don't have e-shift enabled.
You can have both at the same time, so yes.
0:34 lol nice touch with a k1mch1 number plate
9:00 You missed Sonic boom effect. That's best part. 😎
I think it looks really good. They should put the veloster engine and manual in it
Haters gonna hate, but this is a step in the right direction.
The most powerful EV in existence
The sound reminds me of the used standard/non-premium cars in GranTurismo 5
Even just watching this video and looking away, I exect David to switch to an outside muffler shot because of the sound, then I stop and go "oh wait..."
I can confidently say this. Besides the Taycan Turbo S, I'd genuinely be interested to test drive, or even rent for a day or 2, the Ioniq5N. I'm really impressed with what Hyundai did. They seemingly thought of everything l, and I LOVE how it looks
when i had my GLI for a few months it also had a speaker in the dash to add "engine" sound and there were def times I left it on without realizing it and thought this isn't too bad.
First EV that I'm genuinely impressed with
At the end of the day, EV’s will always be chasing the feel of an ICE powered vehicle.
Synthesizers that imitate Grand pianos have become a trend in the current music scene, and Ionic5n is just the beginning.
And the ice cars will be chasing the evs on the 1/4 mile.
I’m loyal to ICE for now though.
@@IraqVet0608 All drag racing records are held by ICE vehicles, so not really 🤷🏾♂️
@@demiurgeobzen327 actual drag cars, yes but on the street… no ice vehicle can keep up. It’s insane(and unsafe) with how quick they are.
@@pstarke1066 that’s a good point. Interesting thing about trends is that they ebb and flow. Will be interesting to see what we have to say in a decade.
I wish they keep this type of thing alive in future cars and also update the "exhaust" to not be as vacuumy.
5:08 I thought that revving was just him playing Gran Turismo for sec lol but in a cool way
does downshifting regenerate the battery at all? cause if so that's pretty freaking neat
I’m convinced they took the sound straight from the old game boy NAMCO f1 racing game.
Sounds like gran turismo... ill accept it. But imagine howmuch better if u could download like an hks bov or something

The fact they are trying means the world. It may be kinda corny but atleast they care and did a really good job with it.
I still think the jetsons sound from the taycan is better but it’s still an impressive effort from Hyundai of all companies
ev's are: heavy, impossible to upgrade, expensive
car enthusiasts want: lightweight, easily upgradable and understandable, cheap
That sounds more like tuner community than enthusiasts
@@Lennonryanmusicno sounds like a real car enthusiast not some fake car guy driving a EV no real car guy will ever want or waste money on a EV, and at that point with all them fake noises just drive a real freaking car how stupid
@@Lennonryanmusicno the tuner community loves the gtr, a heavy highly costumable car. Most car enthusiasts don’t like it because it’s heavy and there is to much technology filtering the driving experience and making it very complicated and expensive to mod and maintain.
BMW i3 does that.
A true enthusiast will enjoy any vehicle that is fun and extraordinary to drive.
I really wanna test drive this just to hear the Evolution and Supersonic in person. It sounds kinda cool in the video tbh.
First car at this price point that I really want….
Amazing job Hyundai!
I think it’s cool as hell
this car seems exciting until I remember I’m the type of person to choose a Miata over a Corvette. I’m bothered that it has to be the high-end, super powerful, expensive version that gets these fun to drive features. I want an EV that takes more than seven seconds to reach 60 but makes me smile the whole way while doing it. Something with over 500 hp that can make me smile is not impressive. The more smiles for the least horsepower means the most impressive car
Honestly at this point I just take an EV that has no touchscreens. If anyone will build an EV with no touchscreen anywhere in the car I will buy it
I like the way you think. Simplicity is king.
so far, these things push me father back into the seat then anything else ive ever driven or ridden in, lowkey want one
I see I5N’s at Buttonwillow a lot. They look like a lot of fun. It’s a lot faster than my VN ever will be lol

Can you bypass all the simulated stuff? How does al this affect range? Kind of cool actually. Just missing that turbo bypass sound.
Yes you can drive it like a usual ev and with a push on a button you can drive it like an ICE. Range should be the same.
Will it stop accelerating when you hit the “limiter”?
Yes, it cuts power and will prevent you from going faster until you either shift up, or disable the shifting
So my question is... Does "downshifting" equate to more regenerative braking? Like how you can engine brake in a gas motor, or exhaust brake in a diesel?
The pops and crackles are hilarious
I've driven this car, and it is a blast. Tons of power, not sure on the price though.
Definitely nice interior and unique body and sounds nice wish the roads were better and that I could afford it I’d get one.
Ya know, I really am not a EV person, like most car people. With that being said, I think I could own one of these and be happy, and that's saying something.
That's so cool. I really want an Ioniq 6N 😭
