I have an '87 Silver Jubilee signed by Jim Marshall and and AFD 100 that I got in 2020 as NOS (the box was never opened!) They are totally different amps, but both are excellent! They totally nail the Marshall tones I have in my head. If you're thinking about getting one, do it!
If you listen to the isolated Welcome To The Jungle track on RUclips, Slash's AFD sound was more thin than it seems in the mix. So the AFD 100 sound seems about right. I use the AFD for my every day amp using the attenuator.
@@rongabay I actually sold the AFD a few months ago to buy a Friedman BE-100 Deluxe and hugely regret it. I hated the BE and sent it back. WAY too much bottom end. I tried a Twin Sister and that was better, but still too bassy and not what I wanted. Not sure whether to get another AFD or get a mid-late 70's JMP 2203 or 2204. I had a 1982 JCM800 2204 years ago, but didn't have an attenuator to make the most of it.

@@antonego8356 I sent back the Twin Sister. I just can't understand why the 0 isn't 0 when it comes to the bass. 0 on the Twin sister is like 7-8 on my Marshalls. I ended up going for a 1977 JMP 2203 with a Legendary Tones Mr Scary. Much more my flavour of sound. I still think the 1959 circuit is the ideal one for me though.
you could also get the same tones from a dsl40cr. it comes with a downswitch to 20w and has more gain than you'll ever need. i use it with a les paul studio and an sd-1 for boost sometimes

The AFD100 is a killer amp! I used to play a Korean PRS with Antiquities through my buddy's AFD100 and it sounded great. His Les Paul sounded even better through it.
No Doubt, agreed, as well everything has increased 300-500 US dollars in one season. The Cabs I am talking about. What is that about. Demos are now selling more for more than new models a few months ago. Prices are out of sight rocket queen land. I suppose the JCM 800 will be 4 grand soon.
The AFD 100... the power comes from the volume, i heard the amp at a slash concert in 2012 and it sounded fantastic. the amp does not feel comfortable at the volume in the rehearsal room, it needs more volume than it is cool👍👍

I played on an afd100 back when it was brand new, honestly I wasn't very impressed with it. I think it's better to get a jcm 800 or jmp master volume and modify it with the Frank Levi super kill mod.
It has to be played with celestion v30s otherwise it sounds terrible. I tried it with my '78 cab with black back Hs in and it just sounded so bad, same settings through the v30 cab and it's so much better. Only likes humbuckers also. The thing is only really set up for Slashes tone and there for you need to keep his rig. As I said, sold my eventually, all about the Jmp 2203 now (original obviously)
The AFD has alot more twang to it and is extremely woody sounding . Sounds more like charged up 1959 super lead which is what the amp used on Appetitte was. A higher gain version of the 1959 super ĺead . I would have loved to hear those amps with a les paul loaded with the Duncan slash signature pickups .
The slash pickups are amazing. I use a pair in my d Angelico and even with the covers off they have a lot of low end. I have a les Paul with covered Seymour Duncan antiquities and it is a little too bright for me tbh
I've got an AFD100, before that I had a JMP-1 and 9200 rig. Now I'm GAS'ing for a Plexi and a JVM410h, it never ends! Come to think of it, I've never played a valve amp that wasn't a Marshall in my life! 🤣
I had 410 for a few months and then had AFD for 7 years. So dynamic amp and also unforgivable, you know what I mean? The best Marshall I've ever had (many).

Seen slash / GNR play a million times live since the get in the ring tour back in the 90's. Saw him in Bangkok back in march and he was using the magnatones. His tone really was nothing particularly special. Sounds much better through a marshall.

I've owned both. The first Slash JCM 2555 is really nice and I still own it. The AFD100 sounded horrible to me and got rid of it ( I don't even like the sound of it in this video )

Owned an Afd 100 for a while. Fantastic amp, totally nails Slashes tone. Unfortunately that's all it done so I sold it and settled for my jmp 2203 which to be honest isn't too far away from the Afd
@@Joshcheyka not in the slightest, it's a great amp but it just wasn't what I needed anymore. I owned it for nearly ten years and doubled my money on it when I sold it. All my gear is from the '70s including some rare pieces (all Marshall of course) and the Jmp is 1980 which is what the original Jcm 800 is based on. The day I sold the Afd I had that moment of should I sell it? I set up both rigs and there wasn't a massive difference, not enough to justify making a grand profit lol. So no, I made the right decision. Plus I'm in the UK, 2nd hand market is way better than the rest of the world. Oh and I have the added bonus Marshall is half hour up the road to me 😎

You are so right about the second hand market there, heck even the new market! before buying my Jubilee full stack in May of 2020, I contemplated buying from Andertons via proxy, because the head alone was $900 US cheaper than the UK sold Marshalls, I would have still been much cheaper despite the shipping charges, but ultimately I decided against getting a UK intended Jubilee due to the voltage adaptor needed to go from 230v to 110v, I figured that would eventually irritate me having to jerk around with that. I ended up going to Sweetwater and was treated very well with their financing. As for the AFD100, #34 mode definitely doesn't sound like a stock JCM 800 or any stock Marshall, maybe AFD mode does since it is a 2203 based amplifier, I really don't care about the AFD mode, just #34 for its harmonics and cocked wah esque tone. You have owned the real amps I have not, I only own the 100 watt Marshall Silver Jubilee and 100 watt Marshall Vintage Modern 2466. I did try the AFD100 and JCM800 out in Amplitube and I was very pleased with both, people may laugh at Amplitube but it did very well on the nuances of Greenback vs Vintage 30 cabs as well as the simulated Jubilee vs my real Jubilee, generally if it sounds good in Amplitiube it'll be amazing on the real rig. I got some really great Jubilee tones out of Amplitube, some that I would have been more than proud to use live, but then I dialed my actual Jubilee in and its was heaven on earth, nothing beats a real amp despite the massive software advancements in recent years.

Technically the Jubilee is the touring amp, the studio amp is a modded Tim Caswell "SIR 36" modded JCM800 which are typographically different circuits

Bought a MINT AFD100 a few months ago and it is one of the best Marshall Amps i have played to date. It can do more than just the Slash tone.

Got myself an AFD100 in 2012, even without a clean channel I find myself able to achieve just about any tone. Top amp and well worth it.

I used to have the baby brother, the SL-5. I’d probably still have it if it had an fx loop. Great sound from it though.

For a lot of people saying the afd100 kind of sucks, you have to play it through some v30s or greenbacks, and it really only likes hum buckers.

I still reckon I can get those sounds out of my JVM410 with a couple of tweeks through the FX loop.
I have no issue copping these tones with my JCM2K DSL with the right cabs/mics/EQ. JVM should be just as easy.
