    Despite the problems that this film had, the beginning up until Ultron first comes out is, for me, one of the best things in the MCU. The Avengers going on a mission with their teamwork already established and bickering while on it, the Avengers Tower, the Iron Legion then the party with all of them just hanging out having fun. I wish I could've seen more of that but never again.

      One of the best arcs involving Ultron is actually named 'Age of Ultron'. It was a multi-book arc that saw him take over the world, and involved a crazy story that included time travel, exploring the impact of his 'father' in the comics, and the classic trope of what happens when the past is meddled with in order to affect the present and the future.

  • @Uatu-the-Watcher
    @Uatu-the-Watcher 2 года назад +9

    “He must have a weakness.”
    That’s a very interesting statement I hadn’t thought of for 40 years. In reflection, Ultron doesn’t have a weakness. The only way to beat him is brute force, and deletion. Unfortunately, he always hides a copy.
    Once, in the comics, Wanda has the ability to change the probability of things. She used that against Ultron and he malfunctioned. That’s the closest I know of a quick win. He’s pretty tough, and one of the Avengers’ deadliest foes.
    Thanks for sparking that thought, Maple. :-)

    • @TopTwom
      @TopTwom 2 года назад +5

      In this film he did have a weakness... he was too human. His artificial intelligence was so advanced it was capable of mistakes like forgetting words and having his feelings hurt. His biggest mistake was misinterpretation of Stark's "peace in our time" statement which was born out of a desire to prove himself.
      I know nothing about the comics, but in the MCU Ultron's weakness was his emotions. He felt fear, anger, confusion and hate... he was as far from a machine as you can get.

    • @BakumanLakuman
      @BakumanLakuman 2 года назад +6

      @@TopTwom Part of the reason, I think, that Ultron is so successful in the comics is that he doesn't allow how he feels to dictate his plans. He's human in the context of his understanding, but his actions are more robotic. He's a calculated and ambitious machine with daddy issues, but for some reason, that makes him more dangerous.

    5:58 - Jarvis = Just A Really Very Intelligent System
    22:12 - Is that... a jug of moonshine?!?
    24:54 - Widow isn't riding a motorcycle. That's parkour on a motorcycle.
    27:09 - Tony's motivations are a complex bundle of his past as a weapons designer, the PTSD brought on by the battle in Manhattan, and his desire to protect people. (That last has a specific order, starting with himself and Pepper, and then working its way down to everyone else.) These motivations come together in what is arguably a "disaster stew."
    31:03 - Wanda is ABSURDLY powerful, and this movie shows an infinitesimally small fraction of her abilities. (I'm speaking in terms of comic books. What she can do in the MCU is still being defined.)
    33:48 - there is a *REALLY* funny scene on the gag reel for this exact moment of Jeremy Renner reaching over and closing off Aaron Taylor-Johnson's airways to make sure he's dead. 🤣

    “Veronica” is a joke. Basically Bruce in both the first film and the comics is in love with a woman named Betty (the daughter of Ross who you see in civil war later). So the names “Betty and Veronica” are both used in the Archie comics as the two women competing for Archies affection. In this context since Bruce loved Betty the other woman vying for his attention is Veronica.

    Age of Ultron falls lower on a lot of people's lists, but it vies for one of the top spots for me. It hits the ground running with that splash page of the full team. Introduces Wanda and Vision. Sets up the Sokovia Accords and Civil War, and has some of the best team fight sequences.
    Most importantly, after assembling in the first Avengers movie, Age of Ultron is crucial in establishing them as friends beyond teammates. The party scene is the only time we get to spend with the Avengers just hanging out (aside from getting shawarma). That's a huge part of their camaraderie in the comics, something the movies don't always have time for. The events of Civil War and where it takes them into Endgame wouldn't have the same weight without the relationships explored in this movie.

    Hey, Maple!
    Helen Cho survived Ultron's blast. Cap found her alive and she is later seen at the new upstate compound in the end along with Selvig.
    Steve couldn't lift Mjolnir despite coming the closest because of a secret he is harboring for selfish reasons to be revealed in a future movie. It is the sole stain on his character.
    The scene with Thor in the Well was originally more involved and had him getting possessed by the Norns, the Norse equivalent of the Three Sisters of Fate from Greek mythology.
    Andy Serkis also did the motion capture for King Kong, Caesar and Snoke as well as Gollum but has acted with his own face in many movies. He will be Alfred Pennyworth in the new Batman film.
    Ultron was created by Hank Pym in the comics and Hulk's romance with Natasha is purely a movie invention. Natasha has been lovers with Hawkeye, Daredevil, Bucky, Hercules and Red Guardian.
    Hawkeye's family is from the Ultimate iteration of the character, Marvel's secondary universe. The Prime 616 universe version of Hawkeye loves to play the field and has bagged practically every female Avenger despite being just an ordinary guy!

      @@Diegesis It's one of those things that is confusing in the movies and more so in the comics. Anytime a new item, be it a gadget, a magic pool, or whatever pops up, and its written as "always having been here", makes me go "Ummm then why didn't ANYONE write about it as far back as the 1960's!?". Slightly sloppy storytelling but there are occasions where the writer handles it well, so it evens out half the time.

    Yeah, you should just always have a box of tissues with you as you continue with the rest of the marvel movies. I feel ya. I have already seen them all and I love watching others react to them because I get a sense of watching them for the first time all over again. I still get tears. The more you watch these movies, the more connected or emotionally invested you become in these characters. I really do hope you continue watching MCU films and hopefully you also plan on watching the disney plus shows. They also tie into the MCU. Love your reactions to these movies. Look forward to the rest.

    Weird how so many people HATED the notion of Bruce and Natasha having feelings for each other. I thought it made sense, and found it very poignant.
    Not a spoiler but a teaser--Wanda is amazingly powerful, her story will be fantastic, and her love story will break your heart.
    PLus, you will (eventually) love the Wanda t.v. series and the Hawkeye t.v. series.

    I think they could have done Quicksilver's death better if they'd changed one thing: if he, Clint, and the boy were behind cover after he ran in, only for us to realise that regardless of speed, he'd still been hit by a shower of bullets as he saved people. It'd be a good payoff for how he got shot in the arm earlier

    It's not entirely clear WHAT Hulk was seeing to make him freak out so badly, but going by a very similar circumstance in the comics, in the prologue to Planet Hulk, he was probably seeing visions of enemies and people he trusted telling him that he should have died years ago, and Hulk himself pondering that all he can do is hurt people, or even that he CAN'T die and he's doomed to suffer alone forever. This is pretty likely, given how he exiles himself from Earth and the horror he's clearly feeling when he snaps out of it.
    Another element that adds to Bruce being scared of having a family; while the MCU doesn't touch upon it at all, in the comics Bruce was abused by his father (thus forming what would become the Hulk as a response to this trauma, and his own feelings of repressing anything he thought would make him like his father) and his father was in turn hurt by HIS father, and so on. Generational abuse is a theme there, and he's pretty wary that he'll turn out the same way, since a big part of Bruce's self hatred is that he thinks he'll just do the same thing over.
    i honestly like Ultron a lot in this one, as he comes off from someone who has a compulsion or directive to kill everything, and he doesn't really understand it or what he's doing, just that he HAS to. Honestly he's one of the villains I felt genuine empathy for.
    I would also say that Vision is worthy to wield Mjolnir not because he's a blank slate (since that isn't really backed up by how the enchantment seems to work), nor because as a sapient machine he's outside of its directives (since Thor seems to brush off that idea pretty fast) but because he's genuinely more moral, heroic and virtuous literally from the moment he becomes alive.

    2:06 'I just want HYDRA to not exist anymore'. HYDRA is probably one of the most consistent villain organizations that have existed in all of Marvel Comics history (from the 1960's onwards). They have been behind some of the most calculated plots to rule the world, and Strucker is actually a serious threat in the comics alongside the likes of Loki, Ultron and other major villains.
    Fun fact! Strucker first appeared in the old 'Sgt Fury and the Howling Commando's' series that introduced the fans to everyone's eventual spymaster supreme of Marvel, Nick Fury! The classic Nick Fury comics of the mid to late 1960's were equal parts James Bond films and inspired by other spy shows/films of the period. Cool gadgets, daring adventures and insane plots to rule/dominate/destroy the world!
