  • Step away from your five speaker home theater setup and it seems most people have forgotten that stereo involves two speakers, not one. Whether it's a device like an Amazon Echo or one of the million bluetooth speakers, too many people have forgotten that when music is recorded, it's captured and mixed with the intention that it will be played back on a two or three speaker system.
Which is why the new audioengine HD3 wireless desktop audio speaker system is such a delight: not only does it have splendid sound with its kevlar woofers and silk tweeters, but it's a pair of speakers that are designed to be separated by 3-6' of distance, giving you the ability to be "in" the music.
But it's the 21st century and as tech reviewer Dave Taylor of www.AskDaveTayl... finds out when he reviews the HD3, audioengine includes plenty of options for connecting to the system, whether it's via bluetooth with aptX, an AUX jack, or even a traditional RCA wire pair.
Add in an Amazon Dot, the only member of the Amazon Echo family with an audio out plug, and you've got a splendid way to listen to whatever music you prefer in top audiophile quality.

The bass reduction swich is actually for if you decide to add a sub woofer, which will take bass duties away from the mid bass.

i love the description im telling this all the ppl all the time... music is just made for L and R speakers... not for surround sound... i have my pc and my home theater in the same room... im using a 7.2 receiver where i also got my pc hooked up.. when ever i feel the need i have to use sourround sound ( mostly games or movies) i move to my couch and use the tv as monitor.. but most time im just using l and r speaker when sitting in front of the pc... its perfect for music or youtube... if i really need to have sourround sound in front of my pc because my girls is using the tv i can always use my 5.1 headset....

I think the fact that you have to wire these together, kind of defeats the purpose of wireless. At that point, you might as well be using a jack. They should have included 2 separate power cables and 1 speaker with the bluetooth, and the other speaker with a receiver for the other stereo channel to be sent to it....especially since they're priced at $400. That would have given them a lot more diversity in how they can be setup. It seems that at this point, they're not really pushing the envelope when it comes to features and cost.

No, I disagree. I have a very electrically noisy environment (modern smart home) and I appreciate having a wired connection because there's no cross-talk, no interference, just clean sound,. Post-review, I have these set up in my bedroom and while the connector sticks out from the back a bit much for my taste, dealing with the wire is a no brainer plus I then don't have to have each speaker plugged into the wall separately, which your suggestion would require. But the good news: if these aren't what you need, there are definitely other options on the market!

You'll come to find out that audio quality is greatly determined whether something is wired or wireless. Bluetooth is a perfect example, bluetooth codec and compression actually degrades audio quality.

Except most people can't hear the difference. If it's something you can demonstrate with a testing device but is effectively moot for the average listener, is it really a big deal?

Hey friend, do you think these compared to the A2+ are better for a small desktop setting?

Excellent review! Have you had an opportunity to listen to the Kef Egg? If so, how do they compare?

Haven't auditioned any Kef products. Perhaps they should reach out to me :-)

HD3 and A5+ which do you choose?

Don't have much experience with the A5+ but I will instead point you to this page that compares the two: www.crutchfield.com/S-Zz4uf28nMh8/compare_772A5PLUSB_772HD3WN/Audioengine-A5-vs-Audioengine-HD3.html

I'll also note that the A5+ are bigger and require a wired connection to the audio source. Big difference.

I've owned both and it depends on what you intend to use them for. IMO the A5's are too much speaker for a desktop / PC system but they are great for filling a room with music. I prefer the 3's on my desk (or the 2+'s) and the 5's if I just want to listen to music in my room.

That's great...It's been bugging me that a lot of these music players have no true stereo sound.

Can you switch between multiple inputs?

It doesn't seem to have that feature, as far as I can tell :-)

What does? My video or the device itself? And if it's the latter, say more about how you have it all hooked up and what music source you're using, please.
