I bought these about 9 years ago knowing nothing about speakers, today, i crank these in front of my mates and they all freak out how crisp and clear the sound it. This is the only thing i have ever bought in my life that was a good decision
I have a pair of these and bamboo. After the break-in they are hands down the most impressive speakers in this price range with nothing else like them on the market. I absolutely love them.
Most people whine about the price of this. Obviously they haven't listen to the them yet. I went from a bookshelf setup to a A5+ and it's a amazing journey. I don't mix so there is no need for reference monitors. I got my white pair for $300 and I'd say it's money well spent.
I bought these speakers and i can't recommend enough, They are absolutely epic. 150w of pure goodness I combined them with a Bose sub i had from a previous setup and OMG !!! i am lost for word on how much i love them. Totally worth the money. This is a set of speakers i will have for the rest of my life never replacing those!!!
"Speaker placement is crucial." Maybe your placement has changed since this video. You might want to get them out from in front of that window with the ports firing into the corners at the edge of the glass and it might make them settle down a bit. Thanks for the review. I was thinking this would be a good alternative for me to simplify my set up but I don't really care for boom boom bass. Is there anything else in a similar price range that you would recommend as far as powered bookshelves go?
What did you use to adjust the EQ? I have the A2+'s which sound incredible, especially now that they're broken in, but I wouldn't mind messing with EQ.
Which speaker system do you guys recommend? I'm looking for strong but not too overpowering bass, sound clarity and thats about it. Should I get the Audioengine A5+ or the Logitech Surround sound z906.
PLEASE ANSWER THIS: I have enough room for these, but they would not be 6 inches away from the back of the wall. Should that stop me from getting them? As my desk is in a corner, half of the speaker would get a 6 inch gap from the wall, but the other half that is closed in on the wall would not. Please answer!!!!
@HardwareCanucks I know that this is an old review, but I just buyed the A5+ because of it. I have a question, how did you set the EQ? >You say that the midtones are muted but you boosted the highs if I get it right. I know it's a matter of personal preference but I would like to have a guide line
I don't know, I have only had the cheaper end of headphones and I have had a good system with a nice speakers and a fantastic sub woofer, but it was missing a speaker so I did not get the full experience. for those wondering, my dad was letting me borrow it because I didn't have the money for good headphones and my old ones broke.
Are they better for music than for example Yahama HS7? Which would you recommend. A5+ cost 400 euros in my country and 2x Yahamas HS7 cost the same. I want them to listen to music basically combined with a Sound Blaster Z (and maybe a better sound card in the future)
I have these speakers in BLACK and they are absolutely killer. I was going to buy the S8 sub with them but the bass is just so punchy and tight that I found myself not needing it. I pair these speakers with my very high end pc with the best asus sound card you can get for 2 speaker setups. These speakers are powerful enough to set up to your home theatre pc and 60" tv and pound some 1080p movies with top notch results. Excellent speakers, best 450$ I've ever spent on audio equipment
I bought a pair, they sound great, wish i bought the bamboo. They are really bass heavy and seem to be better as is if you don't plan to add a sub. They do start to distort with bass heavy music at higher volumes. I plan on adding in a minidsp to take away some low end, because I have a sub and i want to clean up the A5's sound a little and take away some of the distortion at higher volumes. I don't see them as exactly practical on desktop, I have them setup beside my TV on stands spread about 8 feet apart and i sit about 10 feet away and they fill the room well.
The Emotiva Airmotiv 4s is out now. They recently cleared their stock of the Airmotiv 4 to make way for the brand new model, which came out this year. I haven't heard the new 4s yet, but I've had the regular one and the A5+ and I have to say that the Airmotiv 4 is more enjoyable. You should check them out-just by looking at their tweeter design you can tell that they don't mess around with their speakers, great stuff.
Anj N Then the Airmotiv 4's beat the crap out of the A5+. The A5+ is a $300 speaker and doesn't even come close to the Airmotiv 4's, but Audioengine charges $100 for a damn heatsink to be added to each speaker because they didn't plan out the design of the A5.
I pondered getting a pair of good speakers for the desk, but went with the Heir Audio 5.0, with a good IEM DAC/AMP. They cost me an arm and a leg, but they are worth every penny. As for home listening and movie watching, I use the Sennheiser HD 598, they are the most comfortable thing I ever bought. Of course we all have regrets when it comes to audio gear, and mine was the invest 400$ into the Logitech Z5500, garbage...
Yep. My next step would be to get isolating foam pads for the desk that would also angle the tweeters towards the ears. I was on level with them when testing for tonals though so no worries ;D
I know these come with a built in amp, but I'm wanting to hook these up to a audiotecnica record player. would I need to buy another external amplifier in order to control bass and treble settings? and if I do, what amp would be best?
**WARNING** I have had my Bamboo 5A+ speakers for a couple of years now and I just noticed that the bamboo cabinet is splitting near the port and the cooling fins. The splits follow the bamboo grain. Inspect your cabinets periodically before your warranty expires. AudioEngine is accepting a return on my pair but having to pay for shipping back to them is a real kick in the wallet.
I definitely prefer speakers over headphones as the sound just feels more natural to me. It would be great to see HardwareCanucks review other speaker setups. Something like Logitechs to other studio monitors. See what you all think is the best bang for buck.
Shane a DAC is used for converting digital (computer) signaling into analog formats to play through these and other speakers like this. What does this do? Greatly improves sound quality. You should use one, yes with your Macbook. If you're spending $400 dollars or more on speakers, you should do yourself a favor and buy a DAC for around $150. I use a M Audio MIDI device which is like a two way DAC because I record music, too.
audio on computers (very basic). Goes from DAC ,then to amplifier, then to sound output (whether it's computer speakers, earbuds, headphones). very commonly, the DAC and amplifier are combined and built into the computer and also very cheaply done (which is why we have headphone amps and External dacs in the first place)
Hey guys. I am among the Adam Audio T5V, KRK Rokit 6 G3, Yamaha HS5 and these A5+ . They are all around the same price. I have a Creative sound blaster Z and want to listen to music on PC through spotify. Which would you get?
That was just for the video. I actually tested these in my apartment with proper spacing and everything but they do need their space. I'd consider moving them away from my desk, onto speaker stands to disperse the bass a bit.
Some perceivable difference but only if you have the ear for it. Bamboo isnt as densely packed as other woods or MDF. So the sound should be different on these.
***** none of these speakers are plastic, they are made out of VERY heavy beautiful wood. they are so smooth and have such a nice softcoat finnish on them, well my black ones do atleast. they are the best 450$ I've ever spent and I bought them when they came out. To have speakers like these you better have a high end pc with a top end sound card and or DAC to pump through them or your wasting your money.
"High end" sound car yes but a DAC? No you dont need both. And that "wood" is probably MDF. I dont know the exact specs of these speakers but I think the guy was talking about the vinyl or plastic lining the black or white versions have. Im also assuming these bamboo ones are actually made of bamboo and thus making a different sound.
alexisthemexican What I meant is use either or man, ofcourse you wouldn't buy both just for these speakers but most enthusiasts do have a dac and a sound card or two in the pc's they build. Sorry for the misunderstanding dude.
Nice video Dmitry, a question, how does it compare to Bose Companion 5? There's only that and Harman Kardon Soundsticks available in my country which I have sampled today. I didn't really get a good vibe from the soundsticks but Bose speakers captivated my interest.
Well, i wouldnt game with these. I game ONLY with open style headphones but the A5+ are crazy powerful and with excellent bass that would compliment any FPS/explosive game.
+simen gulbrandsen (Duckhealsu) You never need a dac. What you need to power speakers are Amps. And this has one build in. A dac is recommended but not needed
I'm just kinda walking into this whole audio field with a blindfold on. I'm looking into getting me some just for some personal listening like music or videos. Also just something for listening with some friends in a small/medium sized room. I don't need much, I don't know what I'm doing, can someone help? Do I really need speakers? Or will some default pc speakers work?
External speakers aren't really needed if you're happy with your pc speakers but there is no comparison once you listen to a pair of decent bookshelf speakers. A very cheap set-up that will provide good sound is something like a pair of refurbished Sony SS-B1000 for $50 and a Lepai LP 2020A+ amp for $20, so for $70 you'll be getting a decent set-up that's 10x better than default pc speakers. Later on you can even add a DAC and/or subwoofer :)
I prefer Rokit 8 - more inputs (no outputs) each speaker is powered by itself. Adjustable tweeter. Not as aesthetically pleasing, but the sound is excellent. They're also larger, but are often used as studio reference monitors.
Hi I have to buy 2.0 speakers for laptop. I have seen edifier presonus mackki Bose pioneer etc but never seen in any store.the indian market is full of Sony Samsung LG etc . I have Sony bdv e4100 but I am not satisfied with it,as it is for movies . So for best quality sound is edifier r1280db is good ? Or presonus Eris e3.5 ? Please suggest me . I have to buy only for music listening
HardwareCanucks i got Logitech Z523 and my tabel is MALM desk from ikea and i would like to have excellent sound for music, games and movies would you recommend these or A2+ or is there better speakers with lower price tag? also please tell me the name of the song that were playing on background in this video again thank you for your reviews i always look forward on your reviews when it comes to headphones/speakers
Personally i would say pick up second hand monitors on eBay, they will already be broken in and have a more detailed sound. But if all you want is some nice looking speakers look else where!
The new KRK Rokit 5s cost the same and (in my experience) sound better, and if you can find G2s somewhere they would be even cheaper. Why has no tech-youtuber reviewed them?!
samaway I got a pair myself now. I had a system with quite a substantial subwoofer and it did take half an hour or so to get used to have a different kind of bass. But for me, I don't need the subwoofer at all. The bass is nice and tight, without blurring out the rest of the sound.
Flat4Buggy Heya, why are you recommending an external DAC for mac pro or macbook pro? Don't they have pretty good internal DAC? joshkerr.com/should-you-upgrade-your-dac-if-you-own-a-macbook-pro/ just trying to figure out where to spend my $$$ ;)
Okay so I need to know if this is a decent build for my first famine pc ever. NZXT Phantom 410 case Biostar Z87x motherboard Intel core i5-4670k Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU cooler. EVGA GTX-770 GPU Corsair CX600 600W PSU G. Skill 8GB (2x4) RAM 1TB WD HDD
Could you please review these headset and put them head to head 1- Audio-Technica ATH-AG1 2- Beyerdynamic mmx 300 (made in germany with five years warranty) 3- Sennheiser Game zero
Guys, check out the JBL LSR305. They're better than these Audioengines, or Emotivas, or KRKs...and cheaper. Can be found for less than US$250 for the pair, on Ebay.
HardwareCanucks is it also possible to say hook up a nintendo 64 or other RCA input device to the speakers to play your video games thru them? cause that is what turned me onto the speakers cause of that audio input. that would be awesome if you could test that.
If you want to save some money Audioengine sells them Refurbished, you can get the bamboo for the same price as the black and white pairs or just save 90 bucks.
I bought these about 9 years ago knowing nothing about speakers, today, i crank these in front of my mates and they all freak out how crisp and clear the sound it. This is the only thing i have ever bought in my life that was a good decision
are they okay for parties?

Hey Dmitry! It's your cousin Roman, lets go bowling!
I cant believe I'm the first to comment on this quote . haha . nice one!
Actually that doesn't make sense as Niko Bellic is in fact Serbian while you are implying that this guy is Russian
I've got the white plastic ones and I just love them.
It's wood, (glossy white finish) not plastic. A glossy white finish.
Anj N I stand corrected. I don't know their secret recipe but they are great speakers.
Most people whine about the price of this. Obviously they haven't listen to the them yet. I went from a bookshelf setup to a A5+ and it's a amazing journey. I don't mix so there is no need for reference monitors. I got my white pair for $300 and I'd say it's money well spent.

The heat sink is for the amplifier not the speaker...
its clear to see he doesn't have a clue what he is talking about from this review...
Would these be too bassy for hooking up to a turntable that inherently gives warmer sound?
Could you do a review on the Audioengine A2+? They are smaller/cheaper but supposed to be very good.

livingroom size
The two speakers would be plenty powerful unless you like ear bleed! :p
HardwareCanucks ok, thanks for the answer :) saved me alot of money

samaway I got a pair myself now. I had a system with quite a substantial subwoofer and it did take half an hour or so to get used to have a different kind of bass. But for me, I don't need the subwoofer at all. The bass is nice and tight, without blurring out the rest of the sound.
do they have a optical input????
yes they do, although mine are wasted :-(
Are you blind or just stupid??
how would this be hooked up with a mac pro?
Thats what im gonna do thank you!
Flat4Buggy Heya, why are you recommending an external DAC for mac pro or macbook pro? Don't they have pretty good internal DAC?

Guys, check out the JBL LSR305. They're better than these Audioengines, or Emotivas, or KRKs...and cheaper. Can be found for less than US$250 for the pair, on Ebay.
what is the best way to EQ these?
Through your music software. I use Foobar2000
HardwareCanucks
is it also possible to say hook up a nintendo 64 or other RCA input device to the speakers to play your video games thru them? cause that is what turned me onto the speakers cause of that audio input. that would be awesome if you could test that.
As long as you have RCA outputs on your source, you'll for sure be able to power audio through the A5+!
I honestly cheap out on speakers but on headphones I go full in (for my budget of course)
Anyone else does this?
even after 5 years no like... i give you one, it was the same for me, but now i try to balance my budget between them.
Hexibase????
If you want to save some money Audioengine sells them Refurbished, you can get the bamboo for the same price as the black and white pairs or just save 90 bucks.
