    MDF is used in speaker building for a very good reason, it's density and it doesnt shrink or expand with moisture conditions. The price of MDF has nothing to do with it being the best choice in speaker building. (within reason)

      @cobra60six 8 лет назад +6

      Correct, and there is also the consistency of density and anti resonance factor

    I have been happy with my HD6s. I think that, yes, it's possible to get more sound for the money if you're willing to sacrifice a few of the capabilities of this setup, or are willing to go with larger speakers, but I wanted a small set of powered speakers that looked nice, had a DAC, and did Bluetooth. If you're in love with a very sparkly top end, these might sound a little reticent, but I find the sound to be non-fatiguing. I should also indicate that these are not being used with a PC, but rather as a hi-fi rig in a smallish room. I use them with a small sub to get that last few octaves, but they don't strictly need it. They sounded nice and punchy without the addition.

      I could add any sub, do you have faith? Can I do crossover with these speakers? Or when adding a sub, would the sub and the HD6 be giving bass?

    • @thorwulfx1
      @thorwulfx1 6 дней назад

      @@JoseCastillo-ol8eh I would look at a number of newer powered speakers. At this point the HD6 is quite an old design (if they haven't done significant updates in the interim). You're really spoiled for choice at this point. I know that most newer powered sets automatically sense when a sub is plugged in.

      @@thorwulfx1 but those speakers are still for sale hehehe, I already have them, I didn't throw them out on the street, I have to decide with them, I love them, there is nothing old in sound, there are things that sound good and others bad, no matter the age

    I totally agree with you review , that's why I bought. Paradigm shift a2. Powered speakers , each speaker had its own (2) amps and you can daisy chain as many speakers as you want and blow audio engine away and come in 5 colors from a Canadian speaker manufacture

    I have them and the only thing you are right about is the price, since all Bluetooth equipment is at a loss, but for a 5-inch shelf or table speaker for a PC, they are absolutely fine in every way. I would also like a little more power. You can't compare a 5-inch speaker with an 8-inch one, for God's sake.

    Give me break ! get you facts right !these Audioengine HD6 have a very cable DAC D! and a separate B1 receiver , So why do you need a $ 800 DAC(shameless plug) I still have not broken them yet although I agree at $750 they are not competitively price , For my Mac mini I use the KEF X300AW , so these end up with my bedroom TV.

  • @ChrisCebelenski
    @ChrisCebelenski 8 лет назад

    Yeah, i agree with your conclusion. You compared a mid-market studio monitor (the Event 20/20 is pretty common in that range) with what is essentially a consumer computer speaker. For the price range you quoted, you could be even in better company, say the Mackie HR824 Mk2, a THX certified monitor, which can be had for about $700/ea. (Well, that might be double - was that $700/pair?) I usually recommend that computer sound (non-pro use) go to a competent home stereo speaker, say Acoustic Research or Yamaha, and that pro's stick with pro gear as they will get a much truer version of what their sound is like that can then translate to many different devices. For casual home listening and game, you'll do much better with a great pair of bookshelf speakers and a decent receiver than you will with even the most expensive computer speakers.

    I really don't get the comparison with the Event 20/20s. These speakers include a very good bluetooth receiver, and a pretty decent DAC, both of which are not included in the Advents. surely these additions justify the extra cost. Also these are not meant to be studio monitors and not made for near view listening. Not really comparing apples with apples there cost wise. Invalid comparo IMHO.

    My idea was to use them together with Emotiva Stealth DC-1 (not sure if there are better options at this price range which offers USB in, optical IN from the TV and balanced out) so I could connect both, PC and TV.

  • @amanieux
    @amanieux 8 лет назад

    you say bluetooth sounds bad. but bluetooth is not sound related is just a digital transmission system, it just transmits digital data loslessly. if the sound is bad it is the dac after the bluetooth receiver that was not good enough so blame the internal dac, not the bluetooth. or am i missing something ? if they share the same internal DAC, the optical line in should have the same bad sound quality.

    • @snazzy
      @snazzy  8 лет назад

      +amanieux In theory, you're correct, but practically, that isn't the case. Bluetooth bandwidth is still pretty limited and while the theoretical bandwidth of Bluetooth 4.0 is high, just like USB 3.0/3.1, current tech can't reliably push those speeds. So the unit is crippled by inefficient Bluetooth hardware.

    I have to ask, did the reviewer give them the proper break in period of 40 hours? When I first got mine the mids were overpowering as well, but let that Kevlar woofer open up and it starts to even out. Also, you forget you are not really comparing a $750 speaker to another $750 speaker. This is because the HD6 has it's amp built in. So really, when you say it is a $500 speaker you could be right. With all other speakers in it's price range you have to purchase a good amp to power them which would raise the price of those speakers as a whole.I've had these for a few weeks now, and the only thing they are lacking is deep bass. This is why I purchased an SVS-SB1000 to go with them!

    A better microphone, better lighting, and using a slider on some shots would improve the video imo

    Disagree that Bluetooth sounds bad. I would argue that it even sounds better compare plugging 3.5mm jack from smartphone to the speakers since the signal have to go the phone's internal DAC while HD6's DAC is being utilized through Bluetooth route.

    I would like to ask how big is that Asus screen for size comparison. Do you think they are too much for desktop speakers in regards to size/price (I own the old A2's at the moment)? Many thanks

      +Bo Jax It's a 27". Size is fine. Sound doesn't meet what I expect out of $750.

    I find it hard to believe that you can tell the difference between a DAC (not amp) that costs $100 and a DAC that costs $800. Unless the DACs do some processing to the sound, what they output should be mathematically identical as long as the components they use aren't introducing distortion.

      +omgimgfut Different chips and different power topologies will have both different noise floors and different levels of precision/quantization-errors due to the clocks built inside the device. While a digital file on one computer to the next can be absolutely, mathematically identical, a DAC converts that data into analog waveforms-which is not 1:1 across hardware-the analog filters, jitter levels, etc. all color and change the way we perceive sound. Higher quality DACs typically have significantly higher quality femto clocks, lower jitter, and therefore present more dynamic range, separation, and depth that cheaper silicon.

      Yes. Mentioned this at beginning of video. Audioengine recommends 40 hours. I have put on close to 150. Still never came through. :(

    I know audiophile stuff is fantastic and all, but I could get an incredible pair of headphones for that price. If I bought these my wallet would be hurting

    No mention of the well documented break-in period these speakers require. Audioengines open up quite a bit after 40 hours

      +Mike Borginis I break-in everything I review. Still underwhelmed after 60 hours.
