    Just a quick electrical comment. You should *never* recommend that the positive terminal be removed from the battery in order to do electrical work. Removing the ground terminal prevents any chance of sparking or accidentally shorting something out.

    I pulled the dash on my chevy c1500. The central texas sun nuked it after 20 yrs...
    It was cracked and falling apart. I was able to refab it and now it is like brand new again...a big project for my vehicle...I wound up replacing the evaporator and heater core while I had it out...and the fan motor...blend doors...I went OCD on it...hahahaa. To re-texture the new surface I used SEM texture coat, bulldog adhesion promotor, and duplicolor for the top coat.
    All those cracks can be filled with products made by urethane supply co. Excellent ABS repair products that work well for newbies.

    I hope you continue to make videos and don’t let the egotistical people with their own insecurities demoralize you.
    It’s common knowledge for normal folk to say thats a dash.
    mechanics or people with experience will try to get a rise out of you, but they will drown in their own filth to spread hate because they can’t make a video themselves but will lazily say you did something wrong.
    They will project information in the form of an insult and honestly it’s quite lame

    • @jefftreseder4358

      It is safer to take the negative cable off first. All the metal parts around the battery that the wrench you are using could accidently touch is grounded to the negative battery terminal. If you have your wrench on the positive terminal and touch a metal part with your wrench, you'll think it was the 4th of July! ...and you'll probably need to change yer underwear...

      NEVER buy electronics without directions. Send it back, OR get directions online from the company. Realize if it's chinese made though, often they have no idea themselves how it goes on anything. They just copy stuff all the time and have no idea how any of it actually works. i see that EVERY day.

      we used to change em every 40 thousand miles or so, but the evil swine engineers have moved many into the gas tank as part of the fuel pump assembly and it can cost hundreds to drop the tank and change them. Makers now call many "lifetime" filters. Just buy good gasoline to prevent clogging

      Unlock the car with the remote, or by turning the key in the door (whatever way you normally use to unlock the car it doesn't matter),get in and turn the key to ON until the beeping stops, take out key. Then disconnect the NEGATIVE terminal. I'm not sure why Scotty disconnects the Positive. I've always done negative and never had any issues.

    Something random but possibly loosely related... more bad design stuff... my 2006 pontiac vibe's odo stopped at 299,999KM. I have to use one of the 2 trip meters to know how many klicks are on the stupid thing. Normally I use Trip A to track how long it's been between oil changes and trip B to track how much mileage I got to each tank of gas. (if the mileage suddenly really drops but the car seems fine, and no unusual trips were made, it's a sign to go check on stuff). I guess I'll have to make do without knowing how far a tank of gas took me since changing my oil on time is more important. I wonder where I can get some of those stickers the shops put inside on the corner of the windshield to remind myself to check the mileage between oil changes...

    I generally like your videos. However, in this one I think you demonstrate a bad habit by saying to, and disconnecting, the positive battery cable. Maybe on this car it is not a problem, but by disconnecting the negative battery cable a "do it yourselfer" will not risk the possibility of arcing their wrench as with the positive cable.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 лет назад +6

      yea, but as long as you disconnect either cable power is not in the system. Let's just say my videos are not for idiots who throw tools around and short out wiring by touching metal to metal.

    Scotty, isn't it safer to remove the negative terminal rather than the positive? My thinking behind this is that all the metal exposed is connected directly to the negative terminal of the battery, with no fuse. If the positive connector touched the metal, it could short out any remaining charge in computer components.
    TL;DR Wouldn't it short out any computer components that might still carry a charge?

    • @ericl8812
      @ericl8812 10 лет назад

      Its not connected to the battery anymore, its pretty much a dead wire.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 лет назад

      yep, only being dumb shorting the metal of the body or engine to the now empty battery positive terminal would short things out

    • @ChristakyMe
      @ChristakyMe 10 лет назад

      Eric L But if the positive connection were to touch any bare metal, it would complete a circuit to ground (negative) and short out any battery driven devices such as a car computer.
      Scotty Kilmer Thanks Scotty for the reply! Your words will be taken into consideration! Have a great day!

    Hey Scotty love your videos! Took my 2007 Toyota sienna into the dealership to have it looked at because I had a p0500 (speed sensor code) check engine light, abs and brake light on. Speedometer would act sporadic for a few seconds but go back to normal. Here's the thing they did a diagnostic and came back with the ecu was no good and needed to be replaced so I authorized that then when they put that it and test drove the van they said the ecu shorted out the combo cluster is that even a possibility? I feel they shorted my system because after changing both parts my car did the exact same thing again with all the same error codes, when I took it back the next day they put back in both old parts and said they were all of a sudden working and they needed more time. But now my speedometer needle is at 6 o'clock and is not functioning correctly.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 лет назад

      some are part of the dash assembly, some aren't, all cars are different. But if you look closely, you can see where the dash plastic molding ends to figure it out

    Hi Mr. Scotty, I have ford windstar 2000 i had a problem in the gauges for fuel, RPM, TEMPerature..sometimes the rpm wont work but the FUEL & Temperature are working. Sometimes all the gauges are moving up & down..what would be the cause for this one? Do i need to replace the dashboard?

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 лет назад +1

      yes, those things often break down inside the dash , the circuit boards warp and stop working

    Hey scott, can your car pass smog if you have a custom loud exhaust? My 1996 Impala ss has dual flowmaster 40's on it and it's loud when you hit the gas.. so can it pass smog like that?
    I also put a K&N filter and tune up

    tip: after you removed the transparent & black pieces dont ever touch the face of the gauges, sometimes you just cant wipe off the fingerprints on the matte black surface.

    My car speedometer is giving me wrong speed readings, also the fuel meter does that( sometimes running out of fuel because of it)...sometimes the whole dashboard needs time to work after i run the car!! What could be the problem?

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 лет назад +1

      generally that mean the dash is breaking down inside, warped circuit boards often do that. BUT, do check the wiring connectors on the dash unit, sometimes they get loose or pins are in crooked

    Hi Scotty: I have a 1995 Mercury Villager GS, and has two Instrument Panel's lights burned out. I am trying to change those mini bulbs on the back of the Instrument Cluster. This Villager's dashboard generally looks like the one in this car in your current video with one major exception. It has 6 switch electrical connectors attached to the Finish Panel in front of the Instrument Cluster. I have a very hard time disconnecting these electrical switches' connectors (3 on each side) in order to get to the Instrument Cluster. They are simply hard stuck in their connections. I do not know the trick to get each out. Is there a way to loosen these electrical connectors a little before pulling them out without damaging any of them? I have been trying every trick for 2 days and they won't come out. I am not a Mechanic and I do not wish to damage any of them while pulling very hard. Please advise. Thank you

      twist and pull, they have to come out. that's just so old things may have melted the plastic some

    Hey Scotty, just got a quick question for you. I have a 2007 Mazda 3 SP23 and it has 140,000km on it, now the temp gauge reaches normal operating temperature and everything and has never over heated but I've notice since it's winter now here the temp half's when I drive round, is that normal? I don't know if I'm just being paranoid or what not but I feel I might have an issue with my thermostat, like it's stuck open or something? When I was driving round earlier it was only 12c outside.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 лет назад

      yea, put in a new thermostat, odds are it's stuck open. You'll get better gas mileage that way too

    • @scottykilmer

      Old Age. circuit boards that old just warp and stop working one part at a time

      Scotty Kilmer 99 Accord here. Car was cranking but no start after running. Turns out those gen Accords are notorious for fuel pump relays to go bad over time. Noticed hairline cracks in the solder joints after removing the relay, re-soldered all of them and now it starts every time. Boards do go bad after a while.

    • @scottykilmer

      Yes, IF it has a cable. Most are electronic these days, since 1994

      Scotty Kilmer I'm told my 95 Taurus probably does have the cable. I wonder if that's easier and/or cheaper to fix than a speed sensor?

    My dash lights on my 240sx rarely turn on and if they do it's only for like a few seconds. I checked online and found that my tcu might be burned out but it looked fine when I checked, infact the dash lights (bulbs) would turn on even when the tcu was disconnected. What could the problem be?

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 лет назад

      that old thing, the circuit boards just short out over time and do that

    Scotty, my friends 2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7 Sport 4x4 had some rodents chew up the fuel injector wiring a year ago. I put it all back together for him and his speedometer and cruise control have never worked since. We took it to a non chain auto shop and they replaced speed sensors and checked those wires and they seemed solid up to the harness. Any suggestions? The engine light is still on and shows a speed sensor code. Do you think it still may be the speed sensor wire or do you think it may have shorted the speedometer on the cluster? His tachometer, fuel gauge, and other gauges work. Thanks in advance.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 лет назад

      once rats eat wiring, things short out. Often that feeds back and ruins the main computer that ultimately runs all that. Unless rats ate wires fro the tranny to the dash, that's probably it

    Hey Scotty I just got one quick question for you. I own a 2004 ford crown victoria, and the meter where it shows how much fuel it has gets stuck and stays in one certain spot even when I shut the car off I'd imagine it going all the way down as well with all the other gauges. Do you think I might need to replace it? I mean it still reads fuel but sometimes I don't know if that's actually how much fuel if have. Cuz the gauge doesn't fall all the way down when I shut off the car.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 лет назад

      as it stays there even with the car shut off, you have a problem in the dash unit itself.
