  • A few weeks ago, we returned from our biggest - and by far most exhausting - adventure of the year, Trans Madeira, a 5 day enduro stage race. Not only was this race incredibly physically hard, we had very little time to think about what we had accomplished - within minutes of finishing, we were packing our bikes and preparing to get on a flight back home. And for few weeks, we were truly too tired to process what we had been through. Now, however, it’s time to start getting back to our routines, reflect on this race, and start to think about what comes next.

    I **really** enjoyed the Trans Madeira series: what an endurance event! Beautiful scenery and the trails looked amazing. One of the benefits of Macky not racing was seeing the footage of Syd ripping the trails, something we don't often see. Congrats to both of you and thank you for producing consistently entertaining, informative, and thoughtful content.

    Hi folks, both of you should rightly be proud of taking part in Trans Madeira. 5 days of racing over some serious trails without a day off is something not many of us could sustain. Should also be said you where competing against a really strong group of other riders from all over the world. More than a few well known names in that list. You both must have been a bit beaten up by the end. Hope the rib heals fast. Thanks for taking us along with you. Enjoy the recovery and decompression :)

    Trans Madeira was one of the most fun series you guys have put out in a while, I think, and that's no criticism of your other content! I feel like with multi-day XC events, you guys pretty much go through the morning routine together, then you're doing your own things on the bikes all day, and then you link back up in the evening for the end of day debrief. You guys travel all over the world racing some spectacular events, but it seems like you don't get to spend much time together when you're actually there.
    With the enduro race, though, you guys were always climbing together, and even when Macky pulled ahead on the descents, Syd was only ever a minute or two behind. And that absolutely epic hike-a-bike -on what was it, day three or four?- was perhaps the most visually stunning trail I've seen you guys explore for as long as I've been following this channel. I loved that you got to appreciate the views together, and when one was struggling, the other was there to lift them up.
    Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but it seems like you two spent a lot more time together on this trip than you do at BC bike race, for example, and it really elevates the entire experience. Macky, I greatly admire your athleticism and sportsmanship, and Syd, your perseverance through injury a couple years ago continues to deeply inspire me. But I feel like y'all's relationship is a textbook example of "the whole being greater than the sum of its parts," and that really shone in Madeira.
    Anyways, congratulations on a hard-fought 2023, and I cannot wait to see where your adventures may lead you in the coming year. In the meanwhile, though, you better believe I'm looking forward to those family shenanigans alluded to in the outro. Always fun to see what trouble Bo gets himself into, and Syd's parents are inspirations in their own right, the way they keep themselves so young!

    The fact that you can race that hard across so many days, with some crashes, and still manage to film stuff for us to watch... That is just over the top awesome. Big adventures like this make you grow, and getting to see them unfold is a lot of fun for all your followers. Thank you! As for the rib... good call dialing things back. As a guy who busted three in a wipeout on gravel in May, the fact that you kept racing (and could sleep) is epic in it self, Mackey. Enjoy the slower pace fun and the holidays! Cheers.

    Great series!
    Really felt the gap between Syd’s consistency and Macky’s struggle to find it.
    I really feel like much came down to “mojo” post crash. Even if it’s subconscious, post crash it’s difficult to be at the top of your game. Equipment failures just suck but are an unfortunate part of events like this - even with the best preparation.
    I really just love your attitude. While watching your channel we can always feel the downs but appreciate how you handle them. Massive inspiration.

    It was a great series to watch but it did look exhausting especially the transitions. When I have had in race crashes, especially big ones, I am a different rider after, less flowing etc and maybe for more than that race. Syd it was a good insight to know about the gal who finished 1st who crashed on the first stage. What a battle between you two!
    Macky do you ever worry about breaking a wrist when you brace yourself to break your fall? 🚴🏻🚴🏻

    it's really great that you both went out and enjoy yourselves, and allowed yourselves to enjoy your results. Syd, given you were recently uncomfortable the day Macky was behind and caught you mid race, I was wondering if riding with Macky the last day actually slowed you down a bit?

  • @oldkayakdude
    @oldkayakdude 7 месяцев назад

    From my kayak racing days - duration or difficulty of races always had a direct ratio to length of time to analyze. I always packed a couple of garbage bags on every international riding trip I have done, strongly recommend to anyone doing the same. Regarding accidents and crashes, being able to stop and reset the mind if your not injured is a nice skill (handy to have the ability in the river or on a bike). I know some DH racers that have talked about reaching a point in their mental game to do this mid race run.

    Great reflections on the race and peek into your post race time. Quick question on the hike a bike sections between stages - did you take something like trail runners or just wear your mtb shoes? Well done to you both. I think what Macky is asking himself is if he rode safely while being aggressive. Guessing the answer is different for a stage race vs single day.
