A big THANK YOU for this video. It's always a challenge to remove trim bits when it's not apparent how the things are held on. Watched this video once, changed my wife's 2005 Escape's passenger door actuator in less than an hour. (My wife thanks you too.)

I viewed your video prior to pulling apart the passengers door of my wife's 2003 Mazda Tribute.
Worked perfectly, made a little trouble getting the exterior handle to release from the front pivot but after I got that off I was a simple job to get it changed over.
    Thanks.

Thank you for a very detailed and complete instructional video. Made the job of installing a used latch/actuator on my 06 Escape much easier. I did find removing the exterior door handle much tougher than you did however. The rear part of the outside handle grips around the inside portion...took me some effort to snap off and I thought it was going to break. Working with all plastic parts sure makes you concerned with how much force/effort to apply.

I had the door ajar issue on the rear passenger switch causing my car alarm to go off at 4:00am. I was having trouble getting the outside handle flush and after going through your video again, I realized that you need to put that set screw in first before installing the outside handle. I got it put back together perfectly thanks to your video. T27 bit was a good investment as well. Thanks

Thanks Big Guy!! Trying to figure out how to get the latches off the actuator inside the door.. It all comes out in one piece.
Things have changed. Last car door I had trouble with the latch was in 1995, on an older car. Steel rods came loose before it came out.
You do great how to videos by the way. Leave nothing to be the imagination.

Good video. After viewing and seeing you take it apart, it took about the same amount of time for me to change it out. The only issue I had, or may have missed is the different screw sizes in the out door panel and that my car door had two big blocks of foam insulation that I did not see in your video. I was able to remove one of the foam blocks, the other was glued to the inside of the door panel, which made it more difficult to remove the acuator. But, overall, the repair went really well.

Thank You for this informative video - most helpful. Posting additional information in case it can be of any value to others. I have had the issue for years on 2006 ford escape and finally got around to fixing the driver door actuator. Problem was just as you described. I attempted the actuator replacement and it did not resolve the problem. After digging further I found it appears to be the Smart Junction Box (SJB).Found another post in cargurus that has a work around. Seems the SJB is the problem and replacing the SJB is a costly endeavor. The problem is a defective "unlock driver door only" signal from SJB. The work around (try at your own risk) Remove center console (videos available on YT). Find the back of the SJB (the passenger side fuse panel). Locate the bundle with the Pink w/ Orange stripe wire and Red w/ Orange stripe Wire. The Pink orange wire is for "unlock all". The red orange wire is "unlock driver only". Strip a bit of the insulation off the Pink Orange wire. Cut the Red orange wire near the stripped portion of the other wire. The portion of the red orange wire coming out of the connector (cap off, not to be used). The portion of the red orange wire heading into the bundle connect to the stripped portion of Pink Orange wire. Now you will get all doors open with key fob. Driver door only will not work (but if you had this problem it did not work any way). I performed this and it works.I cant take credit for this as the solution was recommended on cargurus forum. Hope this can be helpful incase replacing actuator did not correct.

It’s an interesting video and very useful, exactly what I had presumed that I would need until this morning. The wire harness connector between the door where it attaches to the vehicle itself is free and presumably has been as well as being a perpetual cause of complaints. I am curious if it’s possible to reinsert without the complete removal of the door from it’s hinges just for the room for it’s insertion and proper seal. It’s going to require inspection and cleaning additionally.

Good video! Problem with mine is the Actuator won't work on the passenger door. It's a 2005 Escape Limited. There is a flat, orange ribbon wire that went from the actuator, to the door latch. I was not warned it was there, and now, since I broke the wire, the door ajar light wont' stop appearing on the dash, and the interior lights won't go out when I stop, and leave the vehicle.Any idea about this, or have you encountered this problem before? I don't know where to get another ribbon wire to replace this one. It was like the wire was connected permantly.

My drivers side rear door won’t open from both inside and out, I’ve tried the brass latch and flicking it up, down and it doesn’t work also tried pulling on the rod the opens from the outside and that doesn’t work. It makes things hard thinking that the latch might have a few loose parts maybe but can’t get to it due to the door not opening. I have a 2005 Mazda Tribute.

Okay so I did the repair and ran into issues, the little plastic piece at 18:45 broke in half when I tried to screw in and the connector at 20:52 will not click or lock no matter how hard I push. On top of that the latch I received was broken and when I put the OEM one back in the door no longer locks no matter what. Is that tiny plastic cap at 18:45 the reason it can't lock?

I have a few questions about this whole thing, first off I have a 2005 Ford Escape Limited that is having the car alarm go off after 30 minutes of the alarm being armed (basically 30 min after using the FOB to lock the car). I assume that it is a Door Ajar issue but i've never gotten a warning about it while driving so I don't know what door it is, so is there an easy way to figure out what door it is without the $110 diagnostic that my local dealer charges (I don't have any special scan tools or anything). My second question is just me wondering if my 2005 Escape will look like the one you showed here and if the process is the same for rear passenger doors? My third and final question is if I should even attempt this, this is my first car (just turned 16) so I don't have any experience what so ever working on cars, I do build computers and robots so things like connectors are not foreign to me, from your videos it seems that you work on lots of this stuff so basically what i'm asking is how difficult is this to a noob? Thank you very much for any response, at this point I am desperate to shut that alarm up

I have a 2005 Ford Escape, and the alarm kept going off. No one except the Ford dealer in my area would look at it ("We don't do alarms") or could analyze it ("Our computer won't tell us the history of which latch is setting off the alarm"). So, I was forced to use the dealer. They charged me $140 to hook up the computer and tell me the last eight alarm events were six from the right rear door and two from the right front. Then they told me they wanted more than $1200 to replace both latches. After I recovered from my stroke I politely told them to pound sand, and used this video, ordering my right rear latch from Amazon for just over $100. Having never cracked open a door in my Escape, and not being a mechanic, following the video on my iPad I replaced my latch in 1 hour and 15 minutes. The differences between the rear door latch I worked on and the front door latch in the video were minor. The video is great!!! My alarm is active again, and I'll wait to see if this solves the problem or if, as the dealers analysis indicated, the right front door latch also needs to be replaced. Thanks, so far I've saved $500 and have the potential to save another $500 off what the dealer was going to steal from me. BTW, makes you wonder...even if the dealer charged double for the parts (rip off), they were still ending up with $800 out of $1200 for labor, for what should have been at most a two hour job for two door latches. That is $400 an hour!!! Again, thank you.

I ran into the same issue where I wasn't able to open the door at all, so I couldn't do the instructions above. I spent all day today trying to get it open and about 20 minutes ago I FINALLY figured it out. The exterior handle was floppy and found out that the rod that it pulls up and was stuck in its upwards position. I live on a gravel road which causes this type of thing. I was able to get the interior door panel removed from the back door. After that, I soaked the rod and its mechanism just behind the exterior handle itself with WD40 and worked it for a bit. It soon became operable and the door is now able to be unlock/locked and opened/closed as it should. Hope this helps somebody.

Driver door only will not work (but if you had this problem it did not work any way). I performed this and it works.I cant take credit for this as the solution was recommended on cargurus forum. Hope this can be helpful incase replacing actuator did not correct.

Sir. I have a rear drivers side door that needs a new latch, however the door is closed and will not open. Any idea how to get the latch to release in order to get at the 3 Torx screws?

+Tim Schons Upper half of the door panel will have to be peeled back to get access to the latch and manually move the rods.

Door panels these days are much easier to remove. If you try to remove door panels on older cars like 80's cars, you couldn't do it without damaging it.

I needed to replace mine for an 06 Mazda Tribute, if I wanted to buy a new one it was gonna cost me $300+, so I went on eBay and bought a certified used one for $50 (including shipping)

Well, after it installed, drove 10 miles to the car wash and back and it's back to not working (the locks work but the door ajar light and the door ajar buzzer still come on intermittently which makes the dome lights come on. So I dunno what to do now lol

My problem is that the door is not shutting. The problem is the latch is not latching. There are no issues with it positioned in the 'close' position. I'm thinking it's the latchimg mechanism

I know its been a while - however adding a reply as the below worked for me.
      Also added above:
Hope this can be helpful incase replacing actuator did not correct.

the only thing I would change here is .. I DID NOT remove the indoor handle ass'y... it will break pretty easily if you pry it out from the door.. as with most snap in stuff, it likes to go one way and not the other... I removed the cable from the actuator ass'y and left the inside handle attached... all I needed was a very small straight screwdriver to push in the retaining clip on it to remove the cable ass'y from the actuator.. people, put a small amount of oil on the actuator rod to remove it from the plastic snap in retainer, it will definitely aid it twisting out.....
