Thank you. My sister Jill passed away from a 9 year fight with metastatic breast cancer (to the bones), early this year. I knew she was a fan of Waitress but I wasn’t familiar with it myself. Her wonderful and devastated husband told me, as we were planning her funeral service and thinking of music we wanted to have played, that she used to sit in her comfortable living room chair and simply play Sara’s version of this song, on repeat. She never got to have kids, in fact she miscarried and shortly after got her diagnosis, so she had her share of sorrows and fears, but she never once complained. When he played this song for me that day, everything stopped, and I was able to feel my sister completely... her struggles, her joys, her taste, her sorrows, her hope, her love... Now when i make my weekly or so visits to her resting place, I’ll play a few songs to her on a portable speaker, and this is always one of them. I don’t mind the depth of the tears the song never fails to bring out in me - they help bring me closer to my wonderful big sister. Thanks for posting this, it was a random find but I love your breakdown of the performance and your lovely demeanor, not to mention this beautiful performance by Sara

She Used To Be Mine is my favorite song of all time. While I've never been in Jenna's exact shoes, I've been in an abusive marriage and am still healing from everything I went through. I'm also a server and a baker. The song makes me feel something (I've been numb for years) and as a long time Sara Bareilles fan, this song is everything I could ever ask for.
"She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine"

I think her renditions of the song are the best. So many others, I've found to be showy and overdone, but she hits all the emotional notes AND the actual notes without any need to twist her face into a pretzel or cram twelve notes into one syllable. It's just this perfect display of craft and emotion.

I know it's not what the song is really about, but as someone who became chronically ill and disabled as a young adult...this song just hits me right in the chest. The feeling of grieving someone you used to be is so complicated and painful, but not often talked about. When I have no idea how to talk about, it all belting this out in my room or in the car allows me express that pain...definitely doesn't sound like Sara's, but usually no one is listening but me.

There’s no way you can exhaust this song. I was about to suggest you react to Jessie Mueller! If you’re worried about doing this song too much, then maybe What Baking Can Do? Jessie’s version is just incredible and so dynamic

I echo the request to react to Jessie Mueller's rendition. I've seen this song by the other Jenna's reacted to but somehow I haven't seen Jessie's reacted to. (maybe once but as part of a comparison?) I would love for you to react to the video of her in what I believe is a rehearsal (or perhaps press preview?). And yes, almost impossible to get tired of this song. It's just so well written and rings so true that it is very easy to relate to.

Her Tony’s performance would be a great video to react to, just ‘cause it’s more special because she was sick at that time and recently, Jessie said that whenever she loses her voice, she loses the middle range, so she’ll probably have a hard time performing songs from Waitress and Beautiful, but she won’t have a problem doing Carousel or Into The Woods. What a talent!
That Tony performance or maybe the rehearsal footage.

Whenever I hear or sing this song, i always picture my mom since she gave birth to me and raised me while 'surviving' an abusive relationship (for roughly 18 years). After years and years of me convincing her, and after a night of full-blown physical abuse, my mom decided to separate from him. Being in an abusive relationship is also as hard as walking away from it. We spent years struggling because each of us had developed our own traumas and disorders when we were living with an abusive man. Now I'm 27 and I can say we had overcome it. 😊

I watched Sara perform this in London on West End in February 2020. A few months before the show was forced to close. She sang the song so incredibly. As an audience, we stood and applauded until our hands hurt. I have never experienced a moment like this in theatre. It was a gift and I feel so grateful that I got to see her in the role.

  • @paramitch

I'm so glad you revisited this, Marc, because Sara's is my favorite version of the song, bar none, for every reason you demonstrate here. She knows how to tell a story through song. It's why I knew she would be amazing in the role even before I'd seen her act in "Jesus Christ Superstar," etc. She has been superbly telling stories through song for years. And she is willing to put the emotion first, to pace the song's volume and power, to vary her choices on intonation and vibrato, on pacing, on where to place those gorgeous fragile high notes, or the amazing belted power moments. She's so damn good.
Seriously, this song -- RIGHT HERE -- is a master class for voice students who want to learn how to tell a story through song. I especially love where Sara is willing to put the song before the "prettiness" -- and she's so good at it here. She lets the emotion speak even if it means she has to pull back on a potential big moment. There's a humility to it that every great performer needs to learn and harness.

I remember being single, seeing only one onesie hanging in my closet, and thinking how was I, a girl who was trying to live up to everyone’s expectations but failing miserably, going to make it as a mother. I got pregnant a month after meeting the babies father, knowing we weren’t a good match. I was really scared. This song was written for me. That man, now is my husband and we’ve been together 27 years. That baby is now 26. It’s been rocky all the way. After you read that quote I cried. It’s crazy how your life can have so many regrets and pain yet you can’t wish it had never been because of all you’ve gained from that same hardship. Thank you for this reaction.

This is the first time I’ve watched and been forced to really connect with it in a way that wasn’t just my own experience. Wow. Much like others, tears are unavoidable here for two reasons. First, if it sits right (and it so so does) how can you not feel for the character? Also, how many of us have lost who we were and been sad and bewildered and confused. Yet we also knew, somewhere deep inside, that it was who we were (and wanted to be). None of this would work if it didn’t sit right with the performer. Or, put another way, of it wasn’t real. That’s what Sarah does here. She makes it real. As humans, we know when it’s fake. When it’s real then for you and I the tears flow because we know how much it hurts. Thanks for both feeling it and being willing to show us.

She's a very graceful singer, and hit gold on her first crack as a writer for Broadway. Music & lyrics, thank you very much, and a number that Sondheim would approve of, I'm sure. She Used to be Mine is a perfect dramatic soliliguy that will be sung by leading ladies (and a few men) for decades to come, as a showcase for their abilities as singing actors. I find Sara's own delivery of it mesmering - and a high bar for others to aim for. This version is scaled down beautifully for what looks like her own home, during COVID. Her piano piaying is very pretty, and the score has a pulse that reminds very much of her incredible live cover of Elton John's Rocket Man. If you haven't heard it, then a precious piece of your life is missing that you haven't even been aware of!

Not only does this song beautifully capture the uncertainty of impending motherhood, but it absolutely encapsulates the feelings a woman might feel when she is the victim of domestic abuse, whether emotional or physical. THAT is where this song can shine when done right. And she gets it right every time.

Hi Marc! LOVE your videos! So informative and well articulated! You should do a video on Michael Arden singing "Made of Stone" from the Hunchback of Notre Dame! Michael KILLS the role, and as a musician, I have always been in love with the orchestration created by Alan Menken. It is so interesting how he took one fleeting line from the original disney movie and turned it into what he did!

This song is a very hard song for me to listen to even though I really love it. Unlike Erin, it reminds me of my mother. She’s not a single mother but she’s been in a marriage where she’s been disregarded for decades. She’s like the heroine, she loved who she was - bright, bubbly, a free-spirit - but she’s gone due to people who hurt her.

I’m crying while watching and my dog trying to lick the tears away. I don’t have children of my own but when playing a character you can pull from so many different things. In this the way it is performed I feel her pain, hope, fear and love. Now I need to wipe these tears away before the dog gives me chapped eyes from trying to lick them as I type this and keep trying to fix typos as I type pushing her away lol.

There are few songs from musicals that make me cry, that is one, every time! The Waitress soundtrack has such ups and downs. Although, a 50 year old man ugly crying at 8am is not a sight you should see lol
    Thanks Marc.

I have a question. Before I started watching your channel I was under the impression that musical theatre performances relied mainly on chest voice in order to project the sound to the audience, however, I’ve noticed in your videos that actors use their head voices a lot to express different emotions as well. What would you suggest to improve my head voice? I’m currently auditioning for a role in a local amateur production of “Oliver” and I feel my head voice is all weak and raspy.
I love your channel by the way. Greetings from Chile.

I listen to this song at least once a week.
But I always come back to Adrian Matthew's version. Just a 13 year old boy who makes me ball when he sings this one. I recommend it, if you haven't seen it already.

Not really. I like the way you use it euphemistically. As though it's code for "very". I'm British and we understate everything, so that sits nicely with me.

I don't know if someone else has said this before but have you seen Abby Mueller on Six? I was about to suggest you react to Abby's song "Heart of Stone". My sister (who doesn't know a thing about musicals and practically hates them) was literally crying while listening to her version. It is a really powerful performance and the emotion she delivers is just... there are no words. Hope you can check it out.
