In this video Marc discusses Shosana’s emotional connection to the lyrics and accompaniment, proper phrasing and how to best use two melody lines that are exactly the same.
I want to point out, the professional observations and behind-the-scenes analysis are great. But what I appreciate the most is watching someone who genuinely, deeply, authentically loves musical theatre. You're not just deconstructing what is happening, you're "feeling the feels" as my friend might say. No one can fake that, and there's something purely joyful about watching you watch these.
Thank you Justin, this means so much.
On the other hand, I wrote "analysis" but then followed up with a plural verb, so I should have said "observations and ... analyses." I'm ashamed. I'm positively ashamed.
THIS!
Justin Olson 😂
Justin Olson Justin, you're good - the plurality of the verb 'are' refers to both MDP's observations AND his analysis, so it reads correctly as is. 'Analyses' works too, though. Cheers.
"we dont condone bootlegging.......BUT"
Ummmmm bootleg please! 😆 There are so few professionally recorded Broadway numbers; Bootlegs are some of the only ways you can find a recording of a character's full and complete performance.

Shoshana is a MASTERCLASS in how it's supposed to be done. There's a reason she's still in the game 20 years after her debut on Broadway. BEAST.
Agreed. ♡ Vocal genius, and so special in her ability to totally inhabit (& invite us into) every nuanced emotion she conveys throughout a performance. Love this reaction!
This one is great. However I love Jessie Mueller’s version on Broadway. She plays the character so authentically.
Agreed!!!
There's a version out there of her doing it at what looks like a rehearsal or small audience presentation. It's up close & intimate, and super emotive and heart-wrenching. If you haven't seen it, try finding it. Absolutely adore it.
@@joshridderhoff2050 I see which one you mean, and YES, def one of my favorite versions of this song. Her performance at the Tony's was also amazing.
completely agree! Jessie's was the best performance of this song... though I think Jordan Sparks does a nice and different take then most other that have song it. Most play it angry or hurt about the situation. Jordan just seems heartbroken about the whole situation.
Me when the piano starts😢

Haha. Too much pausing? Sorry
@@MarcDanielPatrick No not at all!! Just a funny mix of emotion while the song is playing, and then intrigue when you give your thoughts. Love it!
this is so accurate
Lmao ikr his expression just shifts
That’s funny
For me the belty and intense parts hit me harder than some of the others because it feels more angry and dissatisfied with ones self and I relate to that more. That’s why I think she sang it like this because she’s relating to a time of self loathing in this moment more than a sad and drained moment that other jennas seem to have embodied.
Sara Bareilles is a very very very talented song writer and singer.
You should do Renee Elise Goldsbery in satisfied from Hamilton.
Coming.
@@MarcDanielPatrick Yes! I was hoping for that!
You should react to “when he sees me” by kimiko Glenn I’m waitress. PLEASEE!!!
PLEASEEEEEE
I third this! And Kimiko Glenn posted it herself ❤️
I saw her sing this in the production last March, and I sobbed. I was going through such a hard time, and hearing that gave me the strength to move on from the pain of the abusive relationship I just got out of at the time.
The emotional power of the arts. Thank you for sharing. 💕
I’m patiently waiting for the Cynthia Erivo performance review I KNOW is coming... 😉
FRIDAY JULY 24TH! 🙌
I had the pleasure of seeing Shoshana play Jenna and she just blew me away! She's wonderful ❤️
I saw Waitress a few times and have listened to probably every Jenna and Shoshana was THE BEST BY FAR for this song. Edit: and everyone who’s played Jenna has been freaking amazing.
This, for me, is the best version. Everything just came together perfectly.
I’m binge watching marc’s videos and I just love him! He’s so real and genuine while also educating and sharing his knowledge.
I saw her in Waitress when my Drama Club went to New York, and I was crying so hard during “She Used To Be Mine”
So jealous.
I love watching all the emotion on your face - thank you for sharing your knowledge of musical theater and helping us appreciate and understand it.
YAY! I stan Shoshana Bean, I really love the way you break down these performances to a tee, as someone who is very new to Musical Theatre world it's so so helpful
Thank you so much. Means a lot.
I love watching the on stage performances of this song. As someone who hasn’t had the pleasure of seeing the show and only listening to the recording, it is very touching to see an actual performance of this powerful song.
I am a proud mama though when I say that watching my (then) 15 year old sing the song at a cabaret style show (where she sang 6 songs) last summer is still my favorite rendition. She had a number of technical pitch issues that I can hear now, but the fact that she understood the emotion of the song and performed it so that the non-musical theatre audience (mostly) that were in attendance were tearing up. Matched against Shoshana, I understand that she was not technically better nor was she as “in the acting moment” because she didn’t have the context of the rest of the scene or shows to work from. But for a 15 year old to get it and emote it enough on this emotional song made me so proud!
If you’d like to watch, that particular song starts around 8:10 and goes to the end of this section.... ruclips.net/video/9NkFmrlC87c/видео.html
I will absolutely check this out and make some comments. Thank you so much for sharing.
I got to see her do this from 8 rows back. You could feel the audience hold their breath while crying at the same time.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts about Shoshana’s interpretation of She Used To Be Mine! Always fascinating to hear particular thoughts - so right on!!!
You inspired this video sir. So thank you!
I would love for you to react to Alison Luff's version of this. I saw her live and she absolutely blew me away. I think she did a lot of what you were commenting in this video. I also love Shoshana and Jessie so it's not a competition. They all bring something special to the character. I love seeing their individual takes on the character. Sara writes some beautiful music. She creates from the heart every time.
I had the honor of getting to see this incredible show on Christmas Day 2019, just under two weeks before it closed(on my birthday). Katharine McPhee was so good and we had two returning OBC members (Christopher and Drew).

YAY! But where's the special whiskey?! :D
Amazing performance!! Thanks for reacting!!
Agghhh!!! One of my favorite songs!!!! Love it!
This song makes me cry every time I hear it.
I think that she does an excellent job on this song! Although I would like to hear your thoughts on Jessie Mueller’s version she set the standard for this song.
I love this song, and your reactions to it.
Oh my, I would love to see you go through video of Heather Headley in Aida, maybe Easy as Life? Gave me chills.
How have I only JUST discovered this channel? With all the shows closed I"d have gotten my Broadway fix! Adore this breakdown, this song ends me everytime I hear it. Cant even attempt to sing it myself, I just break.
ahh thank you so much!
One of the best performances outside the professional musical actors of this songs, is the performance from Adrian Matthews. Its a small boy that covered this song and he does it so good, that Sara invited him on the stage from Waitress to perform this cover in a full version. You can find this cover as a video on the official RUclips channel from Musical Waitress. I think you should see this.
You are an excellent coach, and you clearly love theatre. It's interesting to have your insights into a very brilliant, complex musical. Your expertise is a real boon to theatre students. As a casual viewer, I was struck by the fact that we are with you in your bedroom. I appreciate that your shirt matches your bedspread. That said, even when we are Covid-bound to stay at home, it doesn't add to your professional clout to show us that we're in your bedroom. It's so easy to put in a green screen background of books, or theatre posters or whatever to give your setting a more professional feel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You are good at what you do. Honor that.
Hi Shelly, thank you so much for your comments. Art work is needed, agreed. However I prefer to be more authentic with my surroundings than using a green screen.
You have me hooked... just watching your face while this plays. 😊
🙈
You should watch Jeremy Jordan’s version of this song! His voice is fantastic!
Coming.
Marc Daniel Patrick now im waiting for this...

@hadasdas3 Haha. ty
I know how talented Shosanna is, but this is the first thing I've seen her do that didn't work for me at all. To me, she overacts and oversings from about the 1/3 point onward, to the point that she's somehow zoomed right past the character and we're just watching someone looking and sounding too overwrought to connect with. I much preferred Sara Bareilles's interpretation (and Jeremy Jordan's, which you reviewed separately). It's quieter and has more room to move and breathe.
This one I actually found offputting by the end, although there's no question that she's obviously a capable singer.
Hmm. I can't say I disagree.
Same for me. She's incredible, but overdid it here, IMO.
agreed - she's at like 200% and we lose vocal quality.
I do have to agree with you. Katharine McPhee did it much better in my opinion
I would recommend this version of her performance ruclips.net/video/y0YF6WTdkUI/видео.html I think it’s Broadway.com or something? Makes me cry every time
How about reacting to some of the older greats such as Liza Minelli, Bernadette Peters, Julie Andrews, Angela Lansbury, Barbra Streisand? would be interesting...
Mmmm. Not a bad idea.
cdcotr Marc Daniel Patrick You should react to Judy Garland singing Old Man River when she was older. No other performance matches it in feeling.
Would love you to react to anything from Dear Evan Hansen, RENT, The Heathers, In The Heights, 21 Chump St, Cats, or any classics!
I would LOVE 21 Chump Street tooo.
Another very strong female singer loved it!!! 💕
😘
Really appreciate your commenting and sharing that a crack - well placed, can be masterful and not a mistake.
I’m loving this series so far!
Do you think that it might be possible to do Eva Noblezada performing “Flowers” from Hadestown?
Yesssss hadestownnnnn 😍😍😍
alison luffs version of this is beautiful as well. also highly recommend reacting to eden espinosa and while she’s mostly known for being elphaba in wicked, i think what’s really done well is her role as cassandra in tangled the series, specifically waiting in the wings, or nothing left to lose.
We watched Katherine McPhee on her last Saturday matinee of waitress in London. Before she finished her last note of this song she had standing ovation. It was one of my favourite musical moments. Lovely to see the song discussed. Although it was mesmerising it so interesting to see a professionals opinion on the song
Love your videos!
Would love to see you look at Six from SIX:The Musical. Talk about powerhouse women! 🤩
Hello, really loving the channel! I would love to see a song from Miss Saigon in your strong female performances. I would also love a reacts video to anything from the stage production of Anastasia, In the Heights and Ben Plant's performance in Dear Evan Hansen. Looking forward to your next video!
Miss Saigon vids are definitely on the way soon. Thank you so much for the support.
Her singing 'Make it Rain' at the Ace Hotel is otherworldly
Even if you don't react to it - it's not a role she played live - check out Shoshana singing Sondheim's "Finishing the Hat". It's clearly not her biggest or fanciest vocal, but I think you'd appreciate the subtleties of her storytelling. I didn't know the song (or Sunday in the Park) when I first heard it, ha so I had no idea what it was about but somehow it still made me (& her!) teary. ♡
I know this is an older video and since you've already done Shoshana's performance of this song, you won't want to do another video on it. But I just wanted to mention that the Club Broadway video performance she did still had the grit that is so delicious and perfect, but it's more toned down and personal because it's just her and the pianist. You get to focus on her expressive face. It's really something special.
I totally agree with you
Love your channel. Would love to see your feedback on the fabulous Ann-Margret- maybe Viva Las Vegas or Bye Bye Birdie?
I love all of the comments you make during! There are already some tips I'm going to take and use in my next performance. I'd love to see you watch and break down something performed by Sutton Foster. Maybe "Gimme, Gimme" from Thoroughly Modern Millie or "Astonishing" from Little Women. I'd also love to see a breakdown of something Douglas Sills does from the Scarlet Pimpernel. ♥️♥️♥️ It's such an intense character I'd like to see your thoughts. For Comedy: "Creation of Man", For Drama: "She Was There".
Thank you so much for all of these suggestions!
Break on the first one then sing the second perfectly. I think that can work for instrumental music too. Going to try it.
Oooohh now I would love to see you react to Samantha Pauly's version of All You Wanna Do from SIX!
I do enjoy watching your videos and listening to your commentary. Would love to hear you review Kelli O’Hara from ANY of her starring roles, or Lindsey Mendez from “Carousel”
Though the other songs from Waitress don't do much for me, this one is a knockout. Beautiful, and gorgeous rendition here. The Caleb Hyles version is my favorite, and shreds me every time.
I love this song. And Sara Bareilles. You should review her version.
Great song, great reaction. Would love to see something from “Dear Evan Hansen”
Yes, I've been getting that comment a lot. I'll get on it soon.
Another emotive performance

Also: Diana Ardukhinova "Wicked Game"
Nina Simone "Wild is the Wind"
So Hyang "Bridge over Troubled Water"
I love you Marc!
Hahaha. 👋
Her version posted by broadwaycom is better than her stage performance
I prefer this version over her on broadwaycom, that is perfect but this is raw.
Agreed. I thought of using that one at first, but always go with the on stage versions.
Hya, just found your channel! I love your content and was gonna recommend Les Mis, obviously, I found those videos too. So I thought that a video on wait for it or the room where it happens could be awesome too?
Room - is def coming soon. Thank you so much!
I would love you to analyze Stephanie J. Block! Maybe from CHER? Or even Mystery of Edwin Drood.
She is a goddess.
Absolutely agree.
Lol didn know .....still makes me cry no matter who sings it
Shoshana is a queen! I think I prefer Jessie Mueller's version, she had so much quiet emotion and seemed more vulnerable, if that makes sense? Thanks for your fun musical reviews!! Maybe check out Sierra Boggess singing "Always" or anything 😁
Shes a queen, I'd be happy to.
Do it's quiet uptown plzzzz
Superb. I’d love to see you react to Sophia Anne Caruso singing Dead Mom from Beetlejuice!
OMG YES THANK YOUUUU FOR REACTING TO SHOSHANA ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Subscribing NOW
Thank you so much! :)
I’ll be doing my first reaction video on Smule members SHALLOW performances
Do you know which performance this was? It's one of my favorites of her renditions, I remember seeing a video of this performance on IG but now I can't find it :)
Heyyy!!! You really should react to Jeremy Jordan’s “Moving Too Fast” from the film “The Last Five Years”. I personally love his take on the song and would love to hear your thoughts!!!! 😊😊
React also the Version of morissette She used to be mine and Defying Gravity
Coach, i bet u wanna check Morissette's version of this song as well. It was lit. Thankyouuu
Haha.
Please do react to Morisette Amon singing She used to be mine,,im sure you will love it too.thanks😘
I continue to love your commentaries.
Here’s a question. What musical disappointed you. For me it was The Goodbye Girl with Bernadette Peters & Martin Short. I remember looking at my watch several times wondering how much longer I had to endure this.
Spamalot, The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to name a few for me.
I loved you and your reaction xo I would love to see you react to Nicole Scherzinger sing The Phantom of the opera 2011 at the Royal Variety show xo
Been getting that a lot. I will get to it, I promise.
@@MarcDanielPatrick I cant wait and I'm excited to see you react to more of your reactions as a musician and singing love of musical theater I look forward to it !
Patiently waiting for you to react to Jeremy Jordon🥺♥️
Haha. I will, I promise.
Would love to hear your thoughts on Oklahoma performances 2019
How about a review of Michael Ball doing Love Changes Everything from Aspects of Love?
Please react to Lucie Jones' verison of 'She Used to be Mine'. It's my favourite one and nobody's ever reacted to it.
It probably doesn't count for a broadway performance but I HIGHLY recommend Shoshana's Make it Rain, I've never seen anything like it.
I wish you analyzed Joshua Colley's performance
You really should react to Kimiko Glenn’s “When He Sees Me”!!!
Please do Joanna Gleason and the Prince's song from Into the Woods, "Moments in the Woods."
Oh I love that song and the musical!
I'd love for you to give your comments on Aaron Tveit's performance in Next to Normal.
I do love me some Aaron Tveit performances...
Please could you react to the broadway princess this is Laura Osnes especially bandstand as she is more known for Cinderella
Fun reviews so far! Hope you're able to make more videos. I'm also glad that you're choosing videos that haven't been reacted to yet (so, not just joining the bandwagon all the time! Hehe)

Shoshanna has always been my favorite for this song, but this performance feels off some how. I love her!
Maybe you can do a reaction to something from six the whole performance is kinda about strong females and I might be bias since it my favorite musical but they have pretty good singers
Can you please react to Gary mauer music of the night and bring him home Colman’s Wilkinson in my opinion the best actors in those roles
PLEASE REACT TO ROSES TURN, by Imelda Staunton absolutely out of this world 🌎
I saw Waitress last Summer on Broadway, Alison Luff played Jenna, she brought the entire audience to tears with this song. Please check out her version that she performed on Broadway.com, she's got some great, big notes:

I'd love to check it out. Thank you :)
I suppose I would have to see the whole musical ( darn COVID got the show cancelled) but she doesn’t seem like a woman who anyone could kick to the curb. She just seem strong all the way through. I would have liked to see her more vulnerable at the start and then coming to the realization that she deserves better and would try harder for her and her baby’s sake. But I could just be projecting.
you should reacto to "Jordin sparks used to be mine".
Please react to Morisette’s Stage Sessions cover of She Used To Be Mine and Defying Gravity
Please do Micheal in the Bathroom from the musical Be More Chill
Can you do a review on Leslie in Dear Theodosia?
Oh yes, its coming. I promise.
Watching the authenticity of your facial expressions in your reaction is what I find so enjoyable and keeps me coming back over and over again! Have you ever seen Adrian Matthews being invited to sing this on stage after going viral singing it at home? It still gives me the chills. I'd love to hear your thoughts? And if you've never seen it before, watching your first reaction!! ruclips.net/video/SyKDHXR7gKo/видео.html
I have seen it before and the kid is incredible. Thank you so much for sharing.
Please react to she used to be mine (performed by Jessie Mueller in 70 TONYs)
