I've followed you for over 10 years and realized I don't think I've ever commented. I just wanted to let you know that I often look for recipes with "Chef John" included in my search. I've made this green bean casserole for several Thanksgivings and it's always very well received. I love your humor and have learned so much from watching you over the years! I was watching some of your videos yesterday and it dawned on me how much of a role you've played in my cooking for a long time now. So thank you! Me and my daughter used your recipe for pumpkin pie yesterday. Have a happy Thanksgiving!
Every time I see a green bean casserole recipe I am reminded of the time I went with a then-boyfriend to his uncle's for Thanksgiving only to learn that no one there could cook anything more complicated than scrambled eggs and toast. So I made an entire Thanksgiving dinner for 12 by myself in someone else's kitchen with low quality equipment. At least they thawed the turkey and had purchased quality ingredients. And a cousin volunteered to help keep things tidy and wash things between dishes while I worked so that was helpful.
Chef John has the most amazing sense of humour, I literally have to watch his recipes twice - first time to laugh out loud and , the second to smile whilst concentrating on his recipe
Chef John-“if you’re on your grandma’s porch” brought a smile and a tear- I did learn to prep green beans from my dear Grandma on her porch in West Virginia! Best cook ever! Her main ingredient was Love!
Me too! Makes me miss my grandmother and my mom. They would never let a knife touch those green beans. We snapped them all by hand into correctly sized pieces. 🥲❤
"Make sure to use your hands so you burn yourself" and "If you are afraid of cutting yourself, have your kids do this step" are the best Chef John lines in Food Wishes history.
I have made this a couple times and have been "ordered" to make it for Thanksgiving this year again. I usually don't care of the traditional casserole, but this one is a crowd pleaser!
Rainy Day I am trying it for the first time this Thanksgiving as well! I will have to substitute the onions with French onions but I think it will be great!
I made this last year and everyone loved it! I mix the cheese into the sauce, along with the green beans so that everything is nice and coated and then assemble as done here :)
@HKOverlord117 Yeah, it is a pretty advanced technique. You need to put butter in pan, and turn on the heat until it melts. Took me like 3 semesters of culinary school before I got that one down. ;)
Thank you. I have 2 picky eaters, the hubs and the kid. I haven't had green bean casserole in YEARS! But for Easter, 2024, I'm making it. I will half the recipe but your comment gave me hope ❤
This is my second year making this recipe and I love it! The one suggestion I have is to add two or three teaspoons of lemon juice to the white sauce to brighten it up a little.
momma tri23 I would definitely say this could be made the night before, before baking. Cover well with foil and refrigerate. Then take out of refrigerator a few minutes to rest at room temperature before baking.
@@mommatri2346 Thanks for asking this. Exactly what I wanted to know. I just added this to my menu for Thanksgiving. 38 guests this year. I think they will love it.
This dish has been a hit in my family gatherings! I been doing this recipe 3 years in a row for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I can’t just do something else, they keep asking for the same dish every year 😅 it’s a tradition now.❤
I made this green beans caserole few days ago, for thanksgiving 2018 with little twist since my husband is sensitive to gluten .. 2.5 tbsp gluten free flour for roux and substituted panko with almond meal .. it turned out super delicious .. our family loves it, no green beans left .. I prepared all ingredients a night before thanksgiving and took it out from refrigerator an hour before i put in the oven the next day ... Thanks chef
Made this delicious green bean casserole today for thanksgiving and it was a hit. Oh my goodness. This is the only way I will make this casserole for now on. Thank you for sharing. 🥰
Dear Chef John, I have decided to make this a "Chef John" Thanksgiving. My husband was floored by this green bean casserole! The whole family loved it! Thank you letting the world know that REAL green bean casserole could be so good!
I made this recipe 3 years ago and it was amazing. Unfortunately I had forgotten the recipe and couldn't find this one again. Thankfully I found this amazing recipe again just on time for thanksgiving!!! 💕
Awesome! My mother always did the quick and easy version with canned beans and the crispy french onions with crushed up potato chips on top and it was pretty darn good, but I bet this is extraordinary! Next time I make french onion soup, this will definitely be following shortly after.
I just made these for our 2018 Thanksgiving dinner! This dish was WONDERFUL!! Thanks Chef! We will incorporate this every year now, it was a huge hit!💖
I love listening to Chef John, his videos are the best. I love making his recipes. They all turn out well. My family always enjoys good eats. Thanks Chef John.
Oh my gosh, I am 57 and have spent my whole life pinching the ends from green beans one by one by one.....wheww! I mostly avoid fresh green beans cuz they were such a pain to prepare/clean. Why didn't I think of this great and easy method of trimming the beans? Brilliant!
I remember that when we would snap the green beans it was supposed to pull that side string off. That is why our grandmothers did it that way instead of cutting the ends off. I guess it doesn't matter and maybe we had to do it the time intensive way to keep us busy and out of trouble!
Oh why, oh why, do you make all your dishes look so easy. I get totally mesmerized watching you cook. (you put me in a trans) Did I mention I could be your long lost cousin?.....lol.... I wish there was a chef in my family. For some reason I don't like cooking but I can watch these videos forever.
Jon, yo I made this last night for my friends and when I went for back for more (because I serve myself last) this dish was GONE!! I mean gone as in there weren't any cheese flakes or even onions left! It was the only dish that I didn't have to wash hahahaha ~thanks, love your channle.
Thank you Chef John for this recipe! I needed a side dish to take to my sister-in-law‘s Thanksgiving dinner this year. First time I have ever heard this recipe in my life. I did a great job being the first time making it. I love following your recipes. :)
Using this recipe as a base, I combined with another recipe called 'Supreme Green Bean Casserole', and made it for Thanksgiving. It was a major hit. My friends and family loved it and I got numerous compliments. I could not have done it without this recipe. Thank you!
"Green bean casseroles with them fake fried onions are good but this is a whole other level.." I'm laughing so hard, Amen ! Its fresh and from scratch ! You did great , I love this !
Thank you so much for making a mushroom free green bean cassarole! Myself, my mother, and my sister in law are all allergic and this is a must have thanksgiving dish, very delicious looking and much appreciated.
I made this tonight as my husband requested green beans to go with our anniversary dinner and I had some gruyere in the fridge that I needed to use up. I made a wee casserole as there are on two of us (divided everything by 4). And, I had to use pinot grigio vinegar as I had no sherry vinegar on hand. a It was wonderful! I will definitely introduce this dish to others who look down on "green bean casserole".
Just made this for our Wed church night dinner for 100 people. IT WAS AMAZING!!! We ran out of the casserole. People were asking for the recipe (we sent them to food wishes) and KIDS came back for seconds!!! Thank you! We're serving them for our Thanksgiving meal now. :)
Been searching for a good recipe!!! Everyone has the same old casserole! I’m Excited to try this out with a mixture of traditional green bean casserole Thanks!
My hubs and the kid cannot stand the traditional green bean casserole. But for Easter, this year 2024, I'm making it. I will half the recipe and let you know how it went. Thank you so much, Chef John❤
Thank I made this yesterday for Thanksgiving and everyone loves it, we could not get gruyere cheese but used an Italian blend, it was a true crowd pleaser.
Just wanted to say that this is my go to green bean dish for Thanksgiving and it’s worth the time and effort because it’s sublime. It’s just so good - thanks so much Chef John.
I've made this dish or a version of it a number of times. Making it again tonight... For Christmas for traditional Americans who love the dish. I made this for Thanksgiving dinner and got rave reviews. The only thing I did differently was deglaze the carmelized onions a few tablespoons of port wine when they were close to done. Otherwise, it was cheesy, rich green bean madness. Thank you for coming up with this one!
This is a great replacement for the classic. Because I hate mushrooms, I never liked green bean casserole. When I make it myself I replace the cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken. It comes out delicious. This looks amazing, can't wait to try it.
I've made this a few times and it always turns out very nice...and I don't have the fresh nutmeg, it is hard to find espicaly when your as lazy as I am...But I do love this recipe : )

I decided this would be my first attempt at one of your recipes and obsessed over this video all Summer and finally made this for Thanksgiving this year. It's a very forgiving recipe for beginners like myself, with a huge payoff! kreate06 cook your fresh green beans with your 1/2 inch cubed smoked ham make sure to drain as much water off as you can you want it thick so make your gravy thick just use less water mix it all together and slow cook it till the end turn it up ad your French`s onions when they start to brown take it out sit it on a pie rack let it cool for just a bit enjoy.............
I made this recipe yesterday and it came out AMAZING! On your blog you recommend sherry vinegar but since I didn't have any I poured a splash of dry white wine onto the onions and it was divine. The whole recipe was heavenly. Thanks so much, from me and from the lunch guests I hosted.
I saw this recipe when it first released and I still use this recipe to this day. It really is the best. I always get asked to make this green bean casserole ❤
We really love you Chef John you make everything look so easy and it is so delicious bringing our families together getting them off television thank you so much you're doing a lot for the world you may not know it but you are
I’ve been making this for about 5 years since I found this video. Thanks for the best recipe ever, I’ve added my little tweaks over time. BUT great base recipe none the less. Love!
Just read your ingredient list and will try this recipe with your suggestion: One small change I would make next time, and that I’ve added to the ingredients list, is a small splash of sherry vinegar added to the onion mixture. As you hardcore foodwishers know, that is the secret ingredient in our famous French onion soup recipe, and I believe it would have better balanced out the sweetness of the dish.
Delicious!!!! I cooked it for my Familia they liked it! I have been cooking many of your receipts and my Familia love them!! Thank you for sharing your talent with the world!! God bless you!! 🌞👏👏👏👍👍
"Definitely use your hands, so you burn yourself"... ROFL... Not only a fantabulous recipe, but the interjection of moments of humour make it oh-so-much-more watchable. Thanks again! :)

cook your fresh green beans with your 1/2 inch cubed smoked ham make sure to drain as much water off as you can you want it thick so make your gravy thick just use less water mix it all together and slow cook it till the end turn it up ad your French`s onions when they start to brown take it out sit it on a pie rack let it cool for just a bit enjoy.............
+don engelmeier it sounds sooo good!

starting mine in the morn just don`t over think it
just the thicker the better good stuff.....thank you for your intrest.....
"definitely use your hands so you burn yourself" Hilarious. You're just as hilarious today as you were back in 2011! :)
I saw this recipe when it first released and I still use this recipe to this day. It really is the best. I always get asked to make this green bean casserole ❤
This is my favorite green bean casserole recipe.
mmmm healthy eating for fit body
We really love you Chef John you make everything look so easy and it is so delicious bringing our families together getting them off television thank you so much you're doing a lot for the world you may not know it but you are
i dont got the thyme for that
Joy Ge haha. niiiiice
Lmao you son of a bitch
See if rosemary will help.
Sage advice: Take the thyme anyways :)
I've made this (or a variation on it) pretty much every other year since you released, Chef. Thank you. This one is a special keeper.
Great idea with the cheese, makes it stick better and comes out thicker, yummy !
How can I ever go back to the basic green bean casserole with the fake onions after watching this.
Sara Apodaca yes I hate fake onions
I’ve been making this for about 5 years since I found this video. Thanks for the best recipe ever, I’ve added my little tweaks over time. BUT great base recipe none the less. Love!
Just read your ingredient list and will try this recipe with your suggestion: One small change I would make next time, and that I’ve added to the ingredients list, is a small splash of sherry vinegar added to the onion mixture. As you hardcore foodwishers know, that is the secret ingredient in our famous French onion soup recipe, and I believe it would have better balanced out the sweetness of the dish.
Glad I came across this comment; I'm gonna have to try that next time! Sounds like a good tip.
Made this two Thanksgivings in a row now. Seriously some of the best food I've ever had. Thanks!
He sounds like the How it's Made narrator
Delicious!!!! I cooked it for my Familia they liked it! I have been cooking many of your receipts and my Familia love them!! Thank you for sharing your talent with the world!! God bless you!! 🌞👏👏👏👍👍
"Definitely use your hands, so you burn yourself"... ROFL... Not only a fantabulous recipe, but the interjection of moments of humour make it oh-so-much-more watchable. Thanks again! :)
All these years later, and this is still a Thanksgiving favorite... 😊
I swear my like made it go from 4k to 5k
Totally outstanding! I make this anytime we want green beans; it was amazing with cauliflower too (sprinkled with crisp crumbled bacon) !!
Oh crap, i gotta find thefelinepunk's comment.
I made it tonight and it was delicious. A mix of savoury and sweet.
"Why would you spread it unevenly?!" - Bahahaha
Made this casserole two years in a row at Friendsgiving and my friends love it!
“Definitely use your hands so you burn yourself.” 😂😂 Too funny.
