  • In our series of FREE Pro Tools video tutorials in Podcast 85 we discussed two examples where delay compensation didn't appear to be working correctly in Pro Tools 11. We touched on an example that Mike Aiton had discussed with me. Since the podcast, George Flores from Toronto in Canada shared the session with me and I was able to reproduce what he was experiencing. We sent it onto Simon Sherbourne at Avid UK and he took a look at it and came back with two answers for this example. The key thing to say is that it is not a bug. Pro Tools is working as it is designed to, however under certain circumstances connected to cascading tracks and using audio tracks for stems, it appears as if there is an issue, but there are two ways to resolve it and we show them in this video.
Thanks to George for raising the issue, Mike Aiton for sharing it and especially to Simon Sherbourne for explaining what is happening and how to handle it.

yes thank you guys for doing this!! I would love to see more of the in depth look at PT. I feel that there is a lack of info on these issues or I'm not looking in the right places.

Thanks for the video. I came across this since I have been having issues bouncing drums down to new tracks as well. My question is this. Since you are keeping the delay compensation on the track that you are bouncing to(by making it blue), isn't there still a problem with the track with the plug ins still having their delay compensation turned off once it's being routed to a track that is record enabled? I understand that while bouncing it will sound ok, but afterwards wouldn't the tracks still be out of alignment since the tracks feeding the new ones don't have their delay compensation turned on?

So when recording your mix down to at track and you got multi bussing and parallel stuff going on you havre to turn auto low latency off? or is it only if you record on two or more tracks?

Hi and thanks for this. There is a bug in 'Tools 10 at least that also appears to be occurring in later versions. I'm running a PT10 HD system on Mountain Lion. What I'm finding in record enabled tracks is when doing a drop in the track being recorded goes totally out of sync in the pre-roll. When it drops in it is in perfect sync. It is only in the pre-roll that a problem exists and it is so bad as to make the talent unable to listen to his/her previously recorded section leading to the drop in point. If I duplicate the track and allow the talent to listen to the pre-roll on the duplicated track (without record enable) there is no issue but this is not a reasonable work around in a professional workflow. This ONLY HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY. That is what is crazy making about this. It does not happen all the time and the only way to remedy it when it starts happening is to do a reboot of the Mac and try again. However, this is not always the solution since there are times when the problem persists and a workaround is required. Do you, or any of the readers, have any suggestions?

Also this happens with no plug-ins and no routing between tracks . It happens on a completely clean session and with Long Delay Compensation selected in prefs. Remember the problem is only in the pre-roll but not in the recorded section. I am not the only one to report this. It has also been reported by others in Daw-Mac.

So, can anyone explain me please, why native plugins are working without delay, when their dly is less then hardware buffer size?

I have only recently been FORCED (due to a PC death in the "family") to go from PT 9 to 11. I pretty much hate it for so many reasons . But in tracking the last week or so, I thought I was crazy - until I saw all the other folks having problems with Audio being misaligned.
How can anyone in their right mind say this is "not a bug" ? The basic function of a product / tool / device is malfunctioning yet "it is working as designed" ? What is the reason for this products existence when the basic reason for using is broken ?
Did Barnum's ancestors secretly buy Avid after the original Dancing chicken died ?

this seems to handle listening but when you print zoom in on the waveform and you'll see the audio that was recorded(printed) are off from the original source. Its maddening

From my experience using Pro Tools Ultimate the delay compensation reduces audio fidelity
Btw mono tracks sound better then stereo tracks

This is such BS. Saw this and didn't realize I had already commented. I can get the same "Non Bug" result with NO Cascading tracks. I could basically have 1 track recorded. Lay down another & it is Misaligned. No Bug ? Right......
"Congratulations on buying your new Ford/Chevy/Etc town car. Oh we are sorry but the steering wheel will not function 73% of the time". "Nothing to worry about. The car IS functioning normally. It's just that most times, it won't drive correctly." "Oh did we mention - you no longer own your non-defective auto. It is now rented by the month". "Although we will say you "Own it".
Ridiculous you say ? This issue is SO basic to the product, & yet there is nothing wrong ?
