    I’m 39, been a fan all of my life. Ended when Capaldi left, for me. It hasn’t been Doctor Who since then. I gave Whittaker and Chibnall a chance. The Timeless Children retcon buried it, for me.

      I can see why The Timeless Children doesn’t do it for you, and I respect that the current era isn’t the best and for everyone, even if there’s been a fair share of episodes post Capaldi that I’ve loved

    The great thing about Classic Who is how far it travels . Each Doctor's Era is distinct and has distinct phases within themsrlves as different production teams move in.
    New Who was had the same creative team in charge for almost as long. The problem is getting a team who arent going to fannishly try to recreate what we have done into the ground

    • @DCSMedia
      @DCSMedia  7 дней назад +3

      You’ve hit the nail on the head there. Each era of classic who felt distinct, so much choice. Even within eras, like with the 4th and 7th Doctors eras. Compare the campy Season 24 with the darkness of Season 26. I think the recent Joy to the World Christmas Special reinforced the feeling of stagnation current Doctor Who is experiencing

      @DCSMedia I think it's compounded by the team having historically responded to criticism, both good and bad faith, by doubling down.
      So criticism of "wokery" has emboldened them to add even more (which wouldn't be a problem if it rose above the "male presenting" type inserts). Worse, criticism of the Deus Ex Machina style of storytelling that goes back to the very first series has seen it become the default.

    Most of the series arcs end up a confusing unsatisfying mess. They always start off intriguing, and are good to drive the series forward, but then end up being a let down.
    And you are right, you'd think they would learn not to reach decades deep into the well for characters. They pull out random characters without any sort of reason or introduction and it's just feels like lame attempts at fan service. I'd say you can pull out ONE old character, but you have to explain who they are and give a good reason for them to be there.

      There are definitely series in the modern era where I’ve felt that. Flux is one I look back on fondly since the journey was fun even if the ending disappointed

    I appreciated your discussion about the current Dr Who series. My interest has waned because the stories weren't special to me, and the new guy comes across as an actor who is showing off his performing skills, but he's not convincing me that he's really the Doctor. I'm sorry, but Jody Whittaker was more convincing to me. I think part of my disenchantment with the show these days is that I wanted that woman who played sort of an alter ego Doctor in aJody episode. Her name escapes me, but she was a sharp dresser that I found exciting. When I saw her, I wanted her to take over the role immediately. I've been disappointed about that ever since. These days, when I want to see Dr Who, I just click on an episode that had Eccleston, Capaldi or my favorite, Matt Smith.
    Now that Christmas is coming, I want to watch the holiday episodes again. I look back fondly on the days four years ago when we watched and commented on all those stories on another channel. Sadly, I don't think those videos exist anymore, as they would have served as a reference guide for finding all the holiday episodes,
    So, Dr Who is 61? I'm going to stake my claim to being the only fan of your channel who is an original Whovian. I was 14 when the show debuted!

      Thanks for watching, and I always love your insight and opinions you give. I can respect that view, I’ve personally quite enjoyed Ncuti in the role, I find he has a strong screen presence, and my issues are more so with the stories, but I do see where you’re coming from. I think by opting for a lighter tone, there isn’t as much challenging character drama which I’ve heard many people highlight, so I’d like more of that going forward.
      In terms of the alternate Doctor, I’m assuming you’re referring to Jo Martin as the Fugitive Doctor, I agree with you she was excellent in her limited screen time and deserved much more to do, plus the costume was very cool.
      Back during lockdown there were so many awesome content creators making videos like that, and it’s a shame (though understandable) why there isn’t much now. But on the whole I respect that you aren’t forcing yourself to watch this version of the show instead of just hate watching it, I have a lot of respect for that.

    Great video 👍 refreshing to see a mature and fair analysis of the show at the moment.
    I do have to say though that realising there are fans like yourself that have essentially grown up through the worst era of NuWho (2018-) makes me appreciate how lucky I was to grow up during the golden era of NuWho (2005-2015) 😂

      @DCSMedia Series 10 is a weird one for me because after it first aired, I considered it to be a top 5 series of the modern era. But as time has passed its just slipped further down my ranking purely because the non-finale episodes are just so forgettable for me now.
      But the golden era for me began with the introduction of the time war and ended when the Doctor returned to gallifrey in Hell Bent. That arc was what gripped me for literally 10 years. After that concluded, it's just felt like the show has struggled to create anything as good as that.

    I’ve loved Doctor Who since I was four years old (which was in 1980), and although the show has changed enormously in that time, it has also always stayed the same. It always somehow felt like Doctor Who, it felt like a continuation of the same story, with the same protagonist.
    The Timeless child was the first thing that really rattled me as a long time fan, not only because it seemed convoluted and unnecessary, but because it directly contradicted so much of what had happened in the classic and revived series.
    Then came the shock regeneration into an earlier body, which was weird but ok, then came some mediocre to quite bad stories, then came the bi-generation.
    If I hated the timeless child storyline and subsequent ‘character revelations’ (which I did), then OH MY GOD did I hate bi-generation.
    If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Doctor Who has survived for over 60 years because of the premise of regeneration. It’s a huge reason why people love the show (and The Doctor) so much. So what does RTD do?
    That’s an honest question, I still have no idea what he did, it made no sense (cloning the Tardis with a giant hammer?)
    To make a long comment longer, what I’m saying is that it’s only fairly recently that Doctor Who doesn’t feel like Doctor Who.
    It’s like the show is trying to reinvent itself, but in the worst possible way. It feels like it’s intentionally bad, and increasingly divorced from the tone, themes and continuity developed by so many other creators over so many years.
    Honestly, get rid of Russell T Davis and somehow force Charlie Brooker to be the show runner and everything will probably be ok.

  • @Badbufon

    Looking back, all my favorite episodes were the experimental ones, midnight, blink, love & monsters, grindlock, etc.
    But since Moffat I don't remember a single episode on that style, the best must be "the pilot" in series 10.
    Capaldi era was decent enough, but I hardly remember anything tbh.
    Also, it seems that in newer episodes everyone talks weird and really fast with witty remarks all the time, it's exhausting.
    Also the doctor itself doesn't have a lot of personality, 13th was a lame 10th and 15th is at its best, just super gay. Which is fine and funny, but quite ordinary and not the otherworldly eccentricity one expects from the doctor
    So idk how much of a fan I am if I cherrypick the episodes I like, but it's been quite a while without any of those.

    Yes your tastes change with age, however the elephant in the room with this particular version of the show is the messaging. It is not subtle,,,,and it is obvious that it is seen by the makers of the show as more important than story, or characterisation.

    • @DCSMedia
      @DCSMedia  24 дня назад +2

      I would respectfully have to disagree with that, I think you can criticise how social themes and messages have been incorporated into episodes recently (Space Babies comes to mind), but I genuinely do not think it’s the be all and end all in this case. The show has always done this to varying degrees and it’s not always been subtle either in the past. I mentioned Space Babies as an example, in that case it’s arguably poorly done because they didn’t go far enough with its ideas, as they drop in that story elements to do with refugees and healthcare and whatnot, in a very wishy washy, brief way without exploring it with much depth or nuance, it’s just another element alongside the talking babies and boogie monster. I’ll give you that the show’s attempt at social commentary isn’t spotless at the moment, but it is a vital part of any story, not just in Doctor Who but for anything. A lot of Billy Wilder films of the 50s tackled issues and topics in a humorous but smart way.

      @DCSMedia As you say, it's something it's always done. However, I would argue never with the sledgehammer tactics used by this particular crew.
      But I take your point, and can I say it's nice to speak with someone who can hold a sensible conversation about the program ( Twitter broke me ).
      The Quantum leap reboot had a Trans character done well, ( my son is Trans) I would have liked to have seen that kind of care taken with 'Who',,, sadly lectures on pronouns, and wheelchair access for the TARDIS, was beyond cringe.

      @@sadomensgaudaprime8142 I can understand where you’re coming from there, and I apologise if I came off as a bit snobby, I’m always up for a healthy discussion (:
      I do recognise certain moments do feel quite clunky in their inclusion. The male presenting Timelord scene in The Star Beast is one where it feels like the narrative resolution of the story and the social message don’t blend organically and it just feels clunky. I haven’t seen Quantum Leap so I can’t comment on that show specifically but I’m happy to hear you found that type of representation in a show for yourself and your son, and it’s a shame Doctor Who doesn’t quite have that. Hopefully soon we see that in Doctor Who.

      Thank you for watching and I appreciate your perspective on it. I’m really glad you’re enjoying the show as it is at the moment, and I’m not here to take that away from you. I understand the prospect of Doctor Who going off air is a scary one, and I’m not wishing for it to go away, ideally I just want it to get better. But sometimes, if you feel fatigued or tired of something (like I currently do with the show), some distance from it can be good, and if it went off air, I would have the chance to miss it more, absence makes the heart grow fonder as they say, then when it comes back with a different team, I’d feel more excited to see it again, my passion for the show would feel reinvigorated again. Hope you can see what I mean in this regard, and thank you for being respectful and informative in your response (:

    What made _Doctor Who_ most interesting to me was the moral mythology. Then 13 was just presumed right by definition whilst doing some highly questionable things, 14 was just reckless, and 15 doesn't care where he treads, literally and figuratively.

    • @DCSMedia
      @DCSMedia  Месяц назад +2

      That’s definitely an interesting point, so thanks for sharing. I 100% agree with you on 13, I think because they tried to make out like she was right even when she wasn’t (Arachnids in the UK). It perhaps bothers me less with 15, plus if it can give a brilliant story with Boom, I don’t mind sometimes, just not all the time of course.

    It's very easy to be blinded by nostalgia with Doctor Who. I've been here for 19 years through thick and thin and without a doubt the Eccleston and Tennant eras are my version of the show. I grew up with it and it is no exaggeration to say that it was my world. I watched every episode with pure excitement and a lack of cynicism and even to this day I have a great fondness for it. I grew to love and appreciate the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi eras despite not initially being keen (due to my dislike of change and my teenage cynicism starting to creep in). Jodie Whittaker's era was a tough watch and it really challenged my loyalty to the show.
    I have been enjoying RTD2 more than Chibnall's era, the writing has definitely improved and that's something. But yes, the quality is not the same as his first era, despite my attempts to be positive, the finale was a disappointment. It just felt very lacklustre. Russell has always been the master of build-ups there's no doubt about it, he still has it, but his resolutions leave a lot to be desired. Definitely has something to do with the length of the series. 8 episodes is not enough to form a relationship with the companion as Ruby's departure felt very hollow. I'm hoping it will get better for the second series but if Russell focuses on what he does best - which is authentic relationships between characters and fleshing them out - rather than gimmicky things, I will be content.
    Doctor Who will always be my favourite show and I will continue to watch, but my obsession and loyalty to the show is not what it was and I will never love it as much as I did during RTD1 I think when my passion really reached its height.

      I’m glad you’re finding more enjoyment out of the current era over Chibnall’s run. I suppose it’s starting to hit me more now due to getting older and more critical.

    Having seen the best and worst of the show (and fandom) in the last few years, I fully agree with your points. Series 14 feels like a real disappointment despite having an episode I've wanted for years. I feel like I have fallen out of love with the show and have gone from watching it weekly to having barely watched any since the series aired. The new doctor, cries too often, dances too often, is sexual too often, doesn’t save people, kills death with death making the other dead to revive. Extremely disappointed. I’ve been watching since the 1960s and enjoyed Jodi as the doctor mostly. But there are no personal connections between the doctor and anyone besides Rogue, and the spoon lady. There is little relationship building between Ruby and the doctor. Ruby is like an NPC in a video game, only exists because you need a companion. Worst season ever!

    I agree with your points. For me Classic Who is Doctor Who because the character isn’t flirtatious and he’s more alien. Capaldi is my favourite from modern Who because he had a more Classic vibe. I don’t think they should turn the Doctor into a superhero with him using regeneration energy because that should only be there when he regenerates. I think you’re right that with RTD2 it feels stagnant. The same old plot lines with a mystery box girl or reset buttons being used. Deus ex machina is used by RTD and Moffat way too many times over the years. The plots today don’t make much sense. I wish the BBC had let the creator of Babylon 5 write some episodes because he writes darker mature stuff. I’d be fascinated to see his take on the show. Maybe Charlie Brooker & Toby Whithouse could work together on giving us a fresh new perspective. Doctor Who should always move forward from one actor to the next and so when Tennant came back with no explanation (clothes regenerated as well) I think that was the moment that killed it completely for me. RTD’s self indulgence damaged the show. Good video. 👍

      Capaldi is probably my favourite of them all, although I do adore what Eccleston and Smith brought to the role. They carry a sense of gravitas and an alien quality, in unique ways of course. @ Yes Steve Pemberton & Reece Shearsmith working on Who would be interesting. It would be nice to let new people take over because if it carries on with the same old writers it’s going to continue to feel stale. I’m hoping for another older Doctor and maybe a more eccentric strange character. The complete opposite of Gatwa, someone scruffy and unusual looking. Probably won’t happen because these show runners seem to think the Doctor needs sex appeal but it would be nice to have a total contrast and also with writing styles.
