I loved the days of building from a kit. Now they market ARF's cheaper than a kit. I still love to build. Bravo!

Wish I had a CNC for all the modifications I made for mine. I had a hellova time making my gear doors open and close with my retractable gear. I managed to apply 10 live missiles ( modified/painted pop bottle rockets). My mistake was not taking into account that the rockets couldn't get away from the plane fast enough or would come back to the plane. I had one strike the wing midflight just outside the left nacelle and did not completely take off the tip of the wing. It made one smooth barrel roll and with an epic THUD, smacked the ground. About eighty hours of work altogether but one awesome ending!
Your model is incredibly sturdy and detailed. Wished I could have added some of the features yours has. Beautiful work. Took me back to memories of mine. Thanks for sharing!

It's so fantastic to see a fellow builder in this age of ARF era we find ourselves in.building and drawing is a dying art.my father taught me from the age of 7 how to build.it started with Chuck gliders and then into full scale aircraft.I design and build my own aircraft.I draw them then build them.my father has now passed away but I will always cherish the knowledge he gave me.also at the age of 5 my father had me flying gliders.up until I was 13 my dad took me flying every weekend.I cherish those times now he is gone.I have just had the motivation to pick up a transmitter again.I am now back flying my planes and I am designing faster and faster aircraft electric and nitro.I hope more people would stop doing the one click hobby king special and build something for yourself.it doesn't have to be as complicated as what u see here.for example, I'm designing a very simple profile 3D fun fly I can take to the park and have some fun.it's not difficult to build it just takes a bit of effort and time.keep up the great work the P-38 looks great

That is an amazing build with super craftsmanship. Sadly not many people have the talent and patience for such work. When I was little, the the P-40 was my favorite prop driven warbird. Then in my late teens I discovered the P-38 after reading a paperback where pilots were given new 38's to replace their worn-out 40's and the American ace went up and dueled with the Japanese ace in his Zero. I can't remember the name of the book but I really liked it and it changed my new favorite prop driven fighter to the legendary P-38 Lightning!
After a little research I found the book, it's called The Last Dogfight by Martin Caiden. If you read it I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Was going to build this plane as the P-38 is my fav. WW2 fighter, but after building 3 40" ones and finding out how hard they are to fly I decided to build some other twin engine planes first. Then 15 yrs later and over 30 planes later I decided to redesign the plane because the original just does not fly very good without the counter-rotating engines. This I designed a look alike P-38 using 2 25cc gas engines out of weedeaters. Made many changes so that the plane would be a good everyday flyer. You can see the plane in my pic. That was her just 6 months ago after her 4th new set of engines. This plane has over 200 hours on her and still going strong. She's had only one misfortune in over 6 yrs of flying and that was me coming in short with my 3D stunt plane and landing on top of her . The damage was minimal and was fixed very easily. As this is the first time seeing your build I'm looking forward to seeing how she come out and how she flies. Look forward to a lot of questions about your plane from me.

Hard to imagine that electric motors can provide enough power to make this P-38 airborne... ah, the advantages of technology. Had a friend a long time ago in Avalon on Catalina Island, Gregor Milne, used to fly P-38s when he was in the service. He told me these babies could do a straight up, vertical climb, they were that powerful.

    • @MikeJM-Fly-RC

You know, with those kind of skills, you could theoretically build a full sized version. And much akin to the DeHaviland Mosquito, as it would be assembled from wood and covered as you did your model, it would be smooth like the Mosquito and I would bet VERY fast.

Mosquito´s performance isnt that good, the thing was that when it got introduced, german heavy and air defence fighters where actually tactical bombers with guns and radars, the only real one was the bf110, and that thing was pretty old, 1940'german prototypes where already faster than the mosquito, not to mention, full metal and with radar too.

i know this is far too late, but when cutting using cnc machines it's always best practice to cut the internal features of an element first and then cut the outline of the piece last. This avoids the piece shifting after its cut and then the internal features being cut in the wrong location relative to the entire piece itself.
