Scotty Kilmer . What well be a the problem on a 02 gmc Sierra slow start on drive? When am in the light i dont to hold the brake cause doesn't seem to move like it usually move on drive? Maybe tranny ? Thanks
Scotty, I bought a 128000 miles car, and I started watching all your videos to get it in great shape again. I used this hint and cleaned the air flow sensor. I just can't believe the improvement that I got!! I am overwhelmed! Seems a new car. Thank you man! REV UP YOU ENGINES!!!!
Don't be tempted to do what i did. After done cleaning the MAF i saw the O2 sensor connector dirty with oil. Unplugged it and cleaned this one too, with quick drying no residue contact cleaner spray (the WD-40 specialist one). Long story short, i needed a new O2 sensor because the old one started sending a very low voltage to the ECU and made the engine run so rich that you could see gasoline dripping from the tailpipe. I then learned that automotive O2 sensors need reference air to work and they source it through their wiring (not kidding). So the cleaner took the place of the reference air in the wires and the O2 sensor started reading lean. The O2 sensor was getting very old but this one was an expensive mistake nevertheless. The new one is making the car run much better than before, though.
Scotty, following your instructions I cleaned the MAF sensor in both of my Toyota Tundra trucks for the 1st time the other day. The entire process was easy, neither looked dirty but both trucks are much more responsive now that the sensors are clean. Thank you!
I really appreciate all your videos, Scotty. Thanks to you, I had the confidence to remove and clean my throttle body and mass air flow sensor, as well as replace my spark plugs. My Mazda runs great now, and I saved a lot of money doing the work myself.
This worked GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, did it just like you said, and then cleaned the Throttle Body too, like you said in another of your videos, on my 99 Mazda Protege 5 speed, and now it idles much better, and absolutely no hesitation anymore, and it runs GREAT!!!!! Now!!! Thanks Scotty Bruce/ Milwaukee
This video saved me so much money (and frustration if I would have seen it sooner). My 95 Subaru Legacy kept stalling out while I was driving, and cleaning the MAF Sensor with some Iso-Alcohol fixed it right up. @Lionel Melvin yup we’ve finally found a mechanic with decades of experience who isn’t afraid to tell the truth. He’s a good person too, hence why he’s been married to the same woman for over 40 years. Some people never stay married that long. Good for Scotty. Been watching him for officially 21 months now @ 14 years old.

Scotty, I buy, trade cars off Craigslist, and it seems like every single vehicle I pick up you have a video on the issues involving the vehicle, and I end up fixing the problem based mostly on your video info. Thanks!!!

So in 2021 I bought a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3l 4wd. For 3 winter seasons it has beat itself up when starting when the Temp is 45 degrees or colder. This truck is extremely clean. Was 19 years old with 105,000 miles when I bought it. When starting it would cough, shake, stall, pop whine you name it all coming from under the hood. So TODAY I finally cleaned the MAP because I was warming it up for 25 minutes to get it to run remotely smooth. So I cleaned it in EIGHT DEGREE weather. The engine was stone cold and it started went up to 1500 rpms and within a second or two down to 1000 rpms and sounded GREAT. So simple. It didn't look like it needed cleaning. They are small perforations and they must get a "film" of oil or something on them. BUY THE MASS AIR FLOW CLEANER little can is $5.00 SPRAY ALL OF IT ON BOTH SIDES AND LET DRY.
I had the same problem in my Honda City. It's a sedan version of the Honda Fit available in my country.... Got the air filter element disassembled and cleaned mass airflow sensor with a cleaner and viola!!! The vehicle pick up has improved. Thanks for this tutorial. Couldn't have done without it.
What a sexy mechanic. I'm gonna listen just cuz he said to. (I just love people who are good at what they do!) On my way to Autozone to get my cleaner! :)
A few years ago I decided to use some Sea Foam on my 2001 Corolla, shortly there after my check engine light came on. It give's me the error for air system or something, can't really remember exactly. I've gone in and cleaned the MAF a few times but the engine light didn't go off. I've heard other people that used seafoam that say it blew their MAF sensor, just wanted to get your opinion on this, thanks. PS, thank for the video on Gumout multi-system tune-up. My car runs smoother and my speedometer light, that has been out for last 5 years, miraculously came on after using gumout. Have no idea why this would happen, but I'm not going to complain.
I think the seafoam has probably attacked the MAF sensor. The sensor wires are extremely sensitive which is why you have to use special MAF cleaner (even WD40 can kill them). You probably need a new MAF, you can buy them for most cars about for $40 online. When using seafoam you should always spray the cleaner in after the MAF or take the MAF off the vehicle. The vehicle should run without the MAF connected but fuel economy will deteriorate and some cars may go into limp mode/safe mode.
Forename Surname no one has ever been able to tell me exactly why you have to use MAF CLEANER only on MAF's . Besides there are a lot of different MAF's. There are film MAF's that look like a thin piece of plastic. I have used sensor safe throttle body cleaner on the same MAF as shown in this video on my Impala and also on a film type MAF with no ill effects. Until someone comes up with more than "only use MAF cleaner" and speculations of what not using MAF cleaner can do I am going to continue to use throttle body cleaner. I think sea foam may have left a coating on the MAF wires b/c I believe one of the components in seafom is diesel fuel, I still use seafom in my gas tank once a year. Have used Seafoam to clean my intake have not used it on my MAF. I also have an oiled air filter (K&N) so I have to clean my MAF more often.
I had the same issue... it came on but no hesitation in the car and I thought maybe I destroyed my MAF... turns out that you can disconnect the battery for like 10 minutes and the light should go off... its just the sensor telling the computer that the car wasn't running right.
Hi Scotty, thank you so much for all your help, but today I took my 2012 platinum f150 ecboost in for a routine oil change at a Ford garage here in Lex. KY…before the guy brought it back to me he came into the waiting area and said that my MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR was dirty, and it would cost 225.00 to clean it, but I told him I would just have it done later because I thought that was a little high….he also advised me there was over 1100.00 worth of other things that need to be done, and gave me a list of them to look thru… it was almost 5:00 pm, and he said they quit at 6:00 pm, but they would go ahead and fix them if I wanted, and I said you mean you can do 1100.00 in repairs in less than a hour…and he said yes …wipers being one of them he said they needed to be replaced, and I just had new ones put on 3 days ago…plus after I got home they had said that they had rotated my tires which was included in the oil change, but one of my rims has a tiny nick in it, and it was still on the left front where it had been prior to the oil change …so anyway that just seemed a little high to clean that sensor, and things didn’t seem quite right with all the other prices so i’m waiting on the repairs, and I just wanted to get your opinion first anyway…I also had a heater actuator go out on the drivers side on my way to the oil change, but forgot to mention it to them until after my truck was finished with the oil change…plus I didn’t know what had even happened to it anyway just knew cold air was blowing out on driver side…even if I put the control on 90….can’t wait to hear the price for fixing that…just bothers me because it only has 43,000 miles on it…I bought it new, and have taken great care of it, but now it seems as if it’s falling apart…as always thank u so much.
My 98 Tahoes check engine light came on this morning when I was on the freeway and my truck started to loose power. P0102 code came up. Would the MAF sensor go out just like that? It was driving great, then all of a sudden starts bogging.
Hi, I took the van to a shop yesterday, he put a computer on it, and no codes came up, and he did do a Pressure test on the fuel valve, and the gauge read 0 just barley any gas coming out of it, Anyway it was the fuel pump going out. I bought one yesterday, and had a mechanic fix it, and now it runs great. Thank you for all your help. I sure wish you lived here, I would take my vehicles to you. You have good videos, and are very helpful.
I had my MAF replaced a few years ago (Kia Carnival 2.5l V6 2005).....the new MAF cost me $390 AUD just for the part!!! Wish I knew about this before! The CRC MAF Cleaner cost $18 from the local auto shop, ($27 if you don't shop around). Prices in Australia are sky high. Thanks for your informative video.Cheers!
yes, both of those will greatly reduce power, especially the maf sensor. If you like my car help, be sure to watch my live car talk show every saturday morning at 10 AM CST on google events. CRC mass air flow cleaner, in the instructions it says "do not use on vehicles with a Karman-Vortex air flow sensor, eg- Toyota Supra turbos, Mitsubishis, and most Lexus vehicles." Sure glad I read that can before spraying down the MAF sensor on my Mighty Max. That could have been a $300 dollar blunder. Be careful people, these videos sometimes leave out little details...
deusexguy Several. And since then, contacted CNC to find out what's up. Their response was that their cleaner was designed for hot wire type MAF's. Never saw any of this mentioned in any video I watched. Problem?
Michael McCurley Although I don't have any of these cars that great to know :D And a bit shocking as to why there isn't any mention on it anywhere else.
ReaLzEdits I think this has to do with a potential liability situation that in this lawsuit happy society, I can't blame the companies for being extra cautious in. I contacted CRC about this situation. They basically replied that their product was designed for hot wire (or plate) type MAF's, anything else is on their own. They also replied that the producers of K-V type units should just replace the unit. Yeah, right... I've got the Email buried somewhere, I can dig it up if you need it. Anyway, my best "educated" guess is, if you've got one these K-V systems, which are now obsolete, but work pretty well, if it's just dusty, leave it alone, if it's gunked up, I would maybe try a zero residue electronic component cleaner, Radio Shack and or any nerd shop has it, and budget for a replacement unit. Just in case. Mine's ('91 mighty max) just dusty, so I just reinstalled it, gently, like a bomb disposal guy would work.
Thank you. When my check engine light came on, it worried me it could be a big deal. Now I know what has to be done. I had Advanco check it out for me. Mass air flow sensor was my issue. Thank you again your videos are so helpful.
You're the only one I come to for mechanic problems these days girls get advantage of knowing how to do their own vehicle because of you just want to say thank you and I've been watching you for almost 2 years now and I just wanted to say is show me how to do mine on my car I have a 96 Toyota Avalon thank you very much have a blessing day
We fixed it, thank you. After all this, taking gas tank off, found out it was just water in the gas. took all gas out, put it back together, put new gas in it, and can of b12 in it, and after driving it little bit, it has been doing good now. Thanks.
Thank you Mr Scotty, I refer to your videos for every project involving vehicles 🚗 that require love and tender attention. You are such a help for many Pepe’s like myself. You single handedly have help large amounts of pollution belched out of our tailpipes. 😅😅🙌🙌
continue... he did not check the engine, he just went by what I said. I been going to this mechanic for years and I trust him. I really love this car and can't afford to get another right now. This hesitation seems to be the only problem I am having. Thank you.
Thanks Scotty, great video and exactly what I needed to fix my daughters 2009 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Sxi. The MAP sensor seems to be moulded into the actual filter hose on this one and it’s a tiny little thing but, you can see it from the air filter end and reach it with the tube. I used WD40 Contact spray (which specifically mentions MAP sensors in their advert). It worked but, didn’t evaporate. So I dried it out by running a hairdryer through both ends. Thanks Scotty

Really saved a number on my check engine troubleshooting on a new to new corolla. Either was the MAF sensor or bad aftermarket gas cap. Cleaned the MAF sensor and check engine light went off 100 miles later.
depends how much you want to spend and what features you want. go to an auto zone and check out their low and mid priced scanners, they can show you what each one does.
lots of things can leak gasoline, but generally worn seals or fuel injectors on parts or connectors cause big leaks. try some UV leak dye in the gas tank then do my video tests "finding and fixing car oil leaks" to see how to find them.
Scottie Thank you for those asome video’s They have helped me a lot Good bless you and your family Thums you for you and hand claps Keep up the good work I’m sure you have help A lot of men like me That don’t know to much about our cars Again God bless you
any extra air or not enough fuel reason can do that. But, on that model, often a leaking intake manifold gasket on the number two bank of the engine does it
Scotty, thanks for an informative , no bs vid. got a mafs reading on my wifes car, tire shop was kindly offering to replace it for $250 ! will try the cleaner first and install after market if I must. nice vet. Bob
you can just plug the egr valve system and see if it stops, then it would be that. Unfortunately those hdis are very complex electronically and you really need a dealer level scan tool to find any culprit for that problem though.
Just bought a 2005 FX35 AND YUP SHE HESITATEING EVERY TIME I STOP AND PUSH THAT GAS NOT COOL ILL GO GET THIS TOMMRO SINCE IT 12 midnight can’t sleep trying to figure it out Scotty ur the KING 👑 OF MECHINICS HIP HIP HOO RAHHH HELL SCOTTY LONG LIVE THE KING 🤴
Hey I just fixed the problem last night I put some of that dielectric grease on the mas air flow connection and the stalling stopped, and I would put it on netruel to come down from those speeds, but thanks! Ur other video was allot of help!!!
Good video. Its great that you make it succinct and cut our the unnecessary. i.e. once you've shown what you're unscrewing, you don't make us watch the process of unscrewing which on some vids goes on and on and on. Perhaps you should make a video showing others how to make a video that "moves along".
hook up a dealer level scanner and have it analyzed, they are very complex and only such a machine can pinpoint such a flaw. anything from a vacuum leak to fuel injection problems can cause that

I have a 1990 Buick LeSabre, where is the M.A.F. Sensor on a 3800 I (one) series V6 engine? Will a can of air dry the sensor or compressed air only?
No

THANK YOU. My 2003 Ford Ranger is now acting like a new truck. For the price of a can of CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner.
I like this guy, he’s likeable in this cold world!
Facts, I watch him even with out car trouble. Positive energy we need more of it.
Do you have to reset the ECU or will it relearn over time?
usually takes either a certain amount of mileage or time.
You can reset if it didn't work the light will come back within a few minites
I had the battery disconnected so everything reset anyways
After 80k on my 2008 Jetta 2.5, never thought to do this until I saw this video now my car purs smoothly on idle and acceleration is back and better! Thanks Scottie Wish you well have a great week Sir!

+George W You surely got ripped off man! CRC brand is the best $4-$5 max
Thanks Carlos, I'll look around at other auto parts stores. It was that Price at O'Riley's... On clearance of all things.
+Carlos Rios I've always used carb cleaner with no issues
+Carlos Rios For the small can. The 11oz can he shows in the video is usually around $10.
i paid about $9 including tax

You never spray the sea foam before the maf sensor. Always after the maf or straight into the throttle body
Seafoam's worthless for anything. It's the usual Consumer Scam.
TYSM. Was driving long distance earlier today and vehicle stalled. This was extremely helpful!
My 98 Tahoes check engine light came on this morning when I was on the freeway and my truck started to loose power. P0102 code came up. Would the MAF sensor go out just like that? It was driving great, then all of a sudden starts bogging.
Scotty, Can a bad MAF sensor cause an engine misfire ?
LAPirate Yep. So can a bad fuel pressure regulator!!!👌
Your a cool dude...
Thanks for video
If you want your MAF sensor to last don't use K&N/Oil coated filters the oil over time collects on the MAF sensor and causes inaccurate readings.
Thanks for the info. I use these, but I will be changing today.
I love your videos Scotty but please wipe the car wax residue out of your Corvette Stingray emblem, it looks tacky!
not my vette, I fix em for customers, but I don't clean up
Scotty Kilmer Lol, I see, I am relieved now! I would never leave wax residue like that on a car, especially a vette! Good work
Scotty Kilmer not ya vette you say .. but to do a skid in it wow nice one
PÅŲŁ ĽĄWŔĔŅĆĘ ŘŐWĒ he probably had permission, the owner probably watches his videos too.
Scotty is the man and
After how much milage should we usually clean this MAF sensor.
maybe every 30 thousand miles or so
Miles please tell me according to the kilometer unit?
Nadir Waziri if you can't convert miles to kilometres you need to sell your car you're not mentally qualified to drive.
Christopher O'Grady shut the fuck up who are you to talk like this dah dammay zayaah talaqaah dah khor aghaa kuss dah ughaim dalaaallah.
who ask you to reply.
yes, both of those will greatly reduce power, especially the maf sensor. If you like my car help, be sure to watch my live car talk show every saturday morning at 10 AM CST on google events. Got off my couch and cleaned my newer toy's MAF and throttle body and added a Econo Aid throttle body spacer. WOW, what a difference! Revin up!
CRC mass air flow cleaner, in the instructions it says "do not use on vehicles with a Karman-Vortex air flow sensor, eg- Toyota Supra turbos, Mitsubishis, and most Lexus vehicles."
Sure glad I read that can before spraying down the MAF sensor on my Mighty Max. That could have been a $300 dollar blunder. Be careful people, these videos sometimes leave out little details...
lol how many maf cleaning vids did u post this to?
deusexguy Several.
My can of CRC MAF cleaner says to NOT use on supercharged engines, also.
Thank you. When my check engine light came on, it worried me it could be a big deal. Now I know what has to be done. I had Advanco check it out for me. Mass air flow sensor was my issue. Thank you again your videos are so helpful.
You're the only one I come to for mechanic problems these days girls get advantage of knowing how to do their own vehicle because of you just want to say thank you and I've been watching you for almost 2 years now and I just wanted to say is show me how to do mine on my car I have a 96 Toyota Avalon thank you very much have a blessing day
Even a cave man could do it , very informative and you made that super simple sir thankyou so much for the video !
Thank you for being here and sharing . Love you, brother.
First time I've come across you Scotty and I'll be back. Great to have a no nonsense help video
I love this guy, he's a damn good mechanic, but he's also very funny and entertaining. Good work Scotty.
We fixed it, thank you. After all this, taking gas tank off, found out it was just water in the gas. took all gas out, put it back together, put new gas in it, and can of b12 in it, and after driving it little bit, it has been doing good now. Thanks.
Love how this guy has been making his videos the exact same way, because we all know they’re perfect
At first I thought, "Not another one of those lame videos", but after watching I said, "I LIKE this dude!" Thanks for the great attitude!
Thank you Mr Scotty, I refer to your videos for every project involving vehicles 🚗 that require love and tender attention. You are such a help for many Pepe’s like myself. You single handedly have help large amounts of pollution belched out of our tailpipes. 😅😅🙌🙌
I really appreciate a well produced video like this.
Thanks Scotty! I replaced mass air flow sensor and starts great, no hesitation, and better gas mileage.
By far the best car info videos on RUclips. This guy is a genius!
continue... he did not check the engine, he just went by what I said. I been going to this mechanic for years and I trust him. I really love this car and can't afford to get another right now. This hesitation seems to be the only problem I am having. Thank you.
from one mechanic to another.. your the man.
Still the best mechanic on youtube.
Thanks ,I cleaned my MAF and ThrottleBody and no more stall or hesitation..I owe you...

Thank you Mr Scotty! Cleaned the maf and throttle body on my 2014 Honda brio! It is really now as smooth as butter! U r toooo good!
+anuj mathur glad to hear it, thanks for the support!
This helped my car start and idle much better. Your videos are very helpful.
Thank you
Really saved a number on my check engine troubleshooting on a new to new corolla. Either was the MAF sensor or bad aftermarket gas cap. Cleaned the MAF sensor and check engine light went off 100 miles later.
Scotty you are the BEST!!
Scotty your videos are quality. Thanks a million times for the help and great work you put in the videos man.
Yes, that is true, I could only recommend them for non MAF sensor vehicles.
Enjoy watching all of Scotty's videos.
Thank, clear and crisp down to the essentiell without 20 minutes of bla bla.
depends how much you want to spend and what features you want. go to an auto zone and check out their low and mid priced scanners, they can show you what each one does.
lots of things can leak gasoline, but generally worn seals or fuel injectors on parts or connectors cause big leaks. try some UV leak dye in the gas tank then do my video tests "finding and fixing car oil leaks" to see how to find them.
GREAT JOB SCOTTY!!!! Smart, quick, and oh so EASY!! I will recommend you to everyone!
Tried your tips in this video and in your other videos. My car runs like new. Thank you!
i trust no other youtube mechanic i always go straight to scotty
Thanks Scotty! problem fix right on the spot under 20 minutes... this video saved me 60 box, I ought you one!
Scottie
Thank you for those asome video’s
They have helped me a lot
Good bless you and your family
Thums you for you and hand claps
Keep up the good work
I’m sure you have help
A lot of men like me
That don’t know to much about our cars
Again God bless you
Why can't I find amazing mechanic like you. thanks for all your videos they help alot
any extra air or not enough fuel reason can do that. But, on that model, often a leaking intake manifold gasket on the number two bank of the engine does it
Scotty,
thanks for an informative , no bs vid. got a mafs reading on my wifes car, tire shop was kindly offering to replace it for $250 !
will try the cleaner first and install after market if I must. nice vet. Bob
you can just plug the egr valve system and see if it stops, then it would be that. Unfortunately those hdis are very complex electronically and you really need a dealer level scan tool to find any culprit for that problem though.
scotty thank you for making these videos. I've saved a lot of money thanks to your channel!
generally, No. When they wear out, they need replacing as they normally break down electronically.
Scotty you’re the best, keep up the good vids!
You're all really helpful,The comments are spot on! Totally awesome to the point no beating around the bush
I like how you cleaned the BACK side of the MAF, instead of the front side, you know, the side that has all the grime on it.
Mr. Kilmer is the truth!
Hey Scotty, it would of been great if you showed the "before" scenario of the MAF acting up before cleaning it. Just my 2 cents. Great vid man! 👍
I would replace the maf sensor if unplugging it makes no difference, it should make a radical difference.
hook up a dealer level scanner and have it analyzed, they are very complex and only such a machine can pinpoint such a flaw. anything from a vacuum leak to fuel injection problems can cause that
Great post .....Most people replace this part without ever cleaning it first...
