Scotty Kilmer could you make a show about your grandpa? You’ve mentioned him a lot and I wonder. Any old pics?
Same to You Scotty. Don't go scaring your cat with fireworks! :)
Many uploads on RUclips claim it's a must-watch. This video does not make that claim, but it most definitely is. This is a must-watch for any car owner. Thank you !
Me thinks you overlooked the source common sense.
Scotty i have AC problem it works fine for some time but get hotter and when i on/off button it starts working.
Lol "that's dirty" that was prob the cleanest throttle body I've ever seen
I said the same thing 🤣
Lol..right
Need to see the other side. Typically that side is brutal!
@@vinceandtheresa1243 well he didnt either see it
He showed and I was thinking he was gonna say "now see this throttle body is look nice and clean so we don't need to worry about it right now"
I changed someones battery out in an Autozone parking lot today. I felt a lil like Scotty, just a lil 😁👍🏻
Did you grunt too? Essential
Thank you Jonny, you are a good person. That car,s. owner will remember that forever. It,s called humanity.
A little moonshine and you're there!
Did u talk loud like him and wave your hands around...lmao
imagine the car that you've changed the battery needs computer reset or something stupid like that to work again.. XD
My check engine light turn on one day and I took it over to a company to scan it. Code came up with the mass flow sensor problem. We looked how much for each one. I was shocked at 239.99 each and not in stock. I ran out the door and looked up Scotty. Man I tell you what, I want to Walmart they had a $20.00 kit for throttle body and mass flow sensor cleaner. Sent an hour and took both intakes off to clean the throttle body’s. Then took the sensors off the intakes and sprayed cleaned both sensors. I walked away for 15 min and checked my work all parts were clean and dry. Put everything back together and took for a 5 min test drive. Check engine light as soon as I came off the drive way and a year later has not returned. Thanks Scotty!!! You saved me hundreds of dollars
Two points I would like to make. #1, I cleaned my MAF sensor and my gas mileage improved substantially. Also, my car does run better as a result. Totally worth it, but you have to buy MAF cleaner and ONLY use that. You can damage the MAF sensor using anything else. Point #2, what Scotty does to clean the throttle is technically OK, It would be a better idea to remove the throttle from the engine so you clean it more effectively. This also helps reducing the possibility of crud and dirt entering into the engine when you spray. Just a warning about the throttle, most cars have an electronically controlled throttle like my car (2007 Mazda 6). If I were to push on the throttle like Scotty does to clean the inside, I would destroy my throttle since the throttle is calibrated to to a certain position by the car's computer. Make sure you check if you can manually push your throttle open, otherwise removing it from the vehicle is a better way to clean it.
Endorsing your comment!
Scotty recommended CRC specific cleaners
I’m shocked nobody pointed out it’s NOT ok to open the throttle body if it’s by wire not not cable. I’ve seen first hand what a finger poke in a throttle body can do. Ruin it, and $500 fix. Do t poke your fingers through a throttle by wire throttle body if you want a happy career as a tech.
That about throttle body is not true electronic thortlte just means there is an actuator and gears. Moving something manually that is designed to move two ways won't obviously damage it.
OMG.. Thank you Scotty, My car was running like crap, and the check engine was on. I used both of the CRC cleaners and my car is running excellent! I did this on the 4th and I really feel like I got my freedom back! No more cruddy mechanics for me! Thanks so much Scotty, U rock! God Bless You!

@@steve75112 corny as hell
Please take note that if you clean your mass air flow sensor you cannot clean it with brake cleaner. You have to use a mass air flow sensor spray., it doesn’t leave residue behind such as brake cleaner, which could potentially give inaccurate readings.
Gustavo Estrada-Blas it’s not residues that’s the problem. It’s the solvent levels are too aggressive on that electrical unit.
Using the throttle body cleaner and MAF sensor cleaners are better suited for their specific functions. One has a faster drying time etc.
Any electronics cleaner will do... No residue is the goal
trulysick86 the electrical connector spray has a higher solvent level and drys much slower than the MAF spray.
The reasoning behind that is that spray will clean about two Sensors (or one).
The manufacturer of the cleaners has data on the sprays so that anyone can make a more educated decision. I suggest you look into that before you start working on more modern cars that are sensitive to solvent levels. Better yet do what the vehicle manufacturer recommends.
Tbh I just cleaned my MAF sensor yesterday with MAF Cleaner and my car didn't start after. Even with the sensor cleaner you got to becarefull and not get to close, those sensors are damn sensitive
Drew 1K tbh read the manufacturers specifications before you spray anything.
If it does not start afterwards and there was no warning in regards to the solvents being used. Chances are that MAF sensor was on the verge of failing.
I’m a 67 yr old Grandma, and I am learning so much from you. I might not do the work, but I know what to ask about now.

Scotty your dope, I been learning how to work on my 2003 Infiniti M45 it's a pain not knowing what is what. You've definitely taught me alot. That was great info Scotty, thanks so much for the reminders to keep things checked for preventative maintenance, you're the best!!!!!
...yeah these simple procedure videos are a gold mine for basic do it yourself maintenance. I like how Scotty brings the how and why together.
Scotty , you might want to tell people not to use a pressure sprayer to clean off the bugs on the condenser or radiator just a garden hose because it could damage could damage the fins. Now how would I know that.
I think you can use one, and they would do a better job, just keep a good distance away. A pressure washer up close seems to be able to destroy everything.
Did your ac quit?
pressure washer WILL---DAMAGE---RADIATOR FINS,Will for sure, I know.keep away.
Ah but if you take it off and pressure wash 100% head on you should be good. I did this with my intercooler and haven't seemed to have damaged it.
My thoughts too. Love watching his channel and have learned a lot from him. Thanks for all you do Scotty!
Yes. I been changing my oil every 5000 miles, air filter 10k and basic maintenance. Just passed 300,000 miles on my '05 Chevy Colorado, I-5 cyl. Still running strong. Easy to do. Thanks for all your info.
Hi Scotty,
You continue to validate all of my thoughts for car maintenance and also the best vehicles to invest hard earned money. I am always learning from your channel and I’m grateful.
In this video you applaud the VIAIR air compressors for quality. I’m retired now and about to start my journey into full-time RV living. Other channels are also extolling it’s virtues but when I see you have invested, I’m buying one for the required daily tire checks on my travel trailer. Thanks again for all. As I said once before in a comment, I hope to shake your hand one day.

One of the best Scotty Kilmer tutorials I've seen. Nice work.
I cleaned up the MAF, it was almost black. Also did the Mass Sensor. Idle went from 700 to 1000 rpm, no more hesitation, running great.
Thanks! My pickup was running rough at low RPM, mostly during acceleration but also at highway speed. Cleaning the throttle body did the trick.
Cleaning the AC coil is a significant positive measure. It helps to use a water solution of dish detergent to clean the coils. Rinse with the water hose. A soft bristle brush can help remove bugs trapped in the coil fins.
James Bockenstette Excellent advice! Better than just plain water!
Thanks again Scotty for the usual reminders, oil changes air filters tire pressure checks and pointing out the reasons why they're not so trivial. Cleaning tips - very cool!
Mine has a m.a.p sensor which requires a little care when cleaning. Car runs smoother as a result. Had a duff injector which made the 02 sensor stop switching, ecu detected misfire on cylinder 3 so replaced injector and cleaned the sensor and low and dehold it started switching again. It's amazing how one fault can lead to many. A scanner and a bit of detective work does wonders. Love your advice scotty.
That was an ASE - certified grunt @ 0:48!!😀

Hilarious. I love Scotty!
Hey Scotty I maintain a fleet of trucks and heavy equipment.
I found with our gas engine Chevy trucks that are drive by wire (no throttle cable) When I clean the throttle blades and move them by hand it will affect how the engine runs until it re learns the throttle position and will idle higher than usual.
If I clean them and not change the blade manually it won’t have any idle issues.
To be able to clean inside without forcing the blade open by hand I turn the key on push the throttle pedal down with a rod, the blade will open electronically and I can clean inside the throttle body without causing any issues.
I have heard of that happening! Good suggestion of avoiding the rough idle 👍 Thanks!
Smart move. A lot of my customers move them by hand and break the plastic gears. Throttle bodies are not cheap
Exactly. I one of my pry bars to the pedal and the handle to the seat! Well done sir!

THANK YOU !!!! I SAVED 190 DOLLARS THAT CADILLAC WANTED TO CHARGE ME TO DO THROTTLE CLEANING!
If you're mechanically inclined, the way it's done is removing the throttle body where applicable. Most people who do this themselves are just going to spray debris back into the intake. Some things he makes sound simple. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
What`s so hard about it ? Anybody can do this, its called not being lazy !! Most of the time it can be cleaned without removal & it wont spray debris into the intake if you spray the cloth & then wipe the throttle body clean !! ITS SIMPLE & IT WORKS !!
@@rodneyjones4890 So you're telling me that everyone who sees this video is just going to automatically know what throttle body they do and don't have to take off to properly clean it? That's pretty brave. That's how intakes get blown off of 3.8 series 2 GMs that have a customer try to "clean" their own throttle body. Intake is plastic. But hey, ain't your money! Hey everyone! You might save yourself $150! Or you might have to put a $300 intake on your car because it's plastic and might blow to bits! You know what? Go for it. I make more money putting an intake on a car over cleaning the throttle body anyway.
@@bryantr90 WHY IS EVERYONE SO USELESS THESE DAYS ? WHAT IS SO HARD ABOUT IT ?

Dear Scotty another great video. I use synthetic on all my machinery, cars and motorcycles. As I do the regular maintenance myself and save the labor I change the oil and filters as if I were using semi-synthetic oils at the recommended change times not 1,000 or 2,000 miles that I could. My Isuzu pickup after 70,000 miles runs like new.
Haven’t watched a Scotty video for a while because I was traveling but it’s time to catch up. And I can notice the HD camera now. Looks great 👍

THANKS Up here in CANADA just discovered your page I apricate how you freely share your many years of experience. In the process of fixing up a 2001 Ford Focus Wagon SE with the 2.0L 4 cyl. SOHC 8 valves Fixing it up best I can since I had two vehicles stolen in the past year or so...with the help of your posts I am tackling things I would never have attempted previously.
Awesome info Scotty!
When it comes to the first part about cleaning the air flow sensor and throttle plate, it seems prudent to leave it alone if all is running right. With my luck, I'd drop a screw into the engine.
I lost one of the two screws by dropping it just last week 😭
I had a trainee do that when replacing an intake gasket. It was a good learning experience though because he then had to take the heads off to find the screw.
It was bad for us though because we had to rent the customer a car for the extra day that it took to put it all back together.
Not really, it's a super easy thing to do. And I've seen them where the engine seems to run perfectly smooth and fine before, but was actually getting noticeably worse gas mileage until I cleaned it. And with the throttle plate... there's usually no screws to remove, just some clamps to loosen.
@@dominicfong6341
Yes. Never manually operate an electronically controlled throttle body
JS Mariani You take the screws out, put them in your pocket, you won't lose them! Very simple!
Also, don't forgot to check your cabin air filter, usually behind the glove box on most modern cars
Yes some drop leaves and junk into the fan when you pull it out. A 90° molded heater hose taped onto a shopvac nozzle can get the junk out. Be careful of the blower’s squirrel cage they are often delicate.
Uh my vehicles dont use a cabin air filter
All good info as usual Scotty. Not only are you a tremendous help to people but to the environment as well. More on checking tire pressure. Yes overnight cold is mandatory. Included with this is to check the pressures before the sun shines on the tires. If possible park in a garage overnight to keep the sun off all the tires. If a garage isn't available, the night before park your car pointing east, and check the pressures early in the morning before the sun moves onto the tires. Because tires are black the solar load can increase the tire pressure thus the reading. I had a car that displayed the tire pressure in all four wheels. One morning on the expressway I had the tires pressures displayed. After a short time the tires on the sunny side of the car were showing higher pressures than the tires on the opposite side of the car without sunshine.
Basic Maintenance... best tip. Best to you and yours.
Did anyone else think the thumbnail looked like a laser being shot through the sensor 🤣🤣

Moving the throttle butterfly by hand like that can upset some cars and they run crap afterwards.
I think that's only on newer vehicles with electronic throttles. An older vehicle as shown here that has a springy cable throttle should be fine (the kind you can manually rev the engine with).
mine is electronic and i have clean it twice and always move it with my hand, nothing has gone wrong in 2 years

Careful with the MAF sensor. Touch it and the heater element could snap in two.... Ask me
Yes my mechanic said they are very sensitive not even a clean it twice get a new one then
They are sensitive, that's why they say ONLY use MAF sensor cleaner. Don't use brake cleaner, carb cleaner, etc...
Brandon Burley You should "handle with care" but they don't fall apart from just spraying cleaner into, and around them!
They are easy to reach normally, handle them gently, as you should with EVERY sensor. These newer vehicles are delicate things in comparison to the older vehicles
Thanks for your video !!! Good job.

PRESSURE RATING IS FOR COLD TIRES..... THANK YOU!! I ALWAYS WONDERED!
