Antonio J. Webb, MD is an Orthopedic Surgeon, Combat Veteran, Author & Motivational Speaker who grew up in the rough streets of Shreveport, Louisiana surrounded by drugs, gangs, & violence. During this time, many friends and family were killed or jailed including a younger brother who was sentenced to a juvenile life sentence for armed robbery and a moms addiction to crack cocaine that landed her in and out of jail his whole life. Dr. Webb details this miraculous journey from this arduous environment to becoming an Orthopedic surgeon in his new book, "Overcoming the Odds" which realistically portrays the heartache and desperate challenges it took to rise above his austere beginnings.

Really inspirational stuff. I'm a little too old to get inspired much anymore, but if I weren't, this'd do it. Good job making it happen. The ability to stay committed to a goal for extended lengths of time, that no matter what attitude, is tough to pull off. I could never do it long enough to amount to much, but I've watched some of those close to me do it. Very admirable and worthy of sharing.
After all, there's people/kids out there with this ability, but if they never get that idea in their mind that they can do it, it won't matter. Someone sharing an experience like this is like someone opening doors to another world, saying look you could go here, or here. If those doors are never opened and kids never see the possibility, they won't even know that they could go through them.
I don't usually get inspired by people, but you changed that. I am born and raised in Shreveport, LA too. When I saw that you went to school in Queensborough I was really shocked. You don't know me, but I'm very proud of you! You made it out. You did it. I'm up next! Stay blessed!

It’s not a choice thing all the time. There are barriers that children aren’t able to climb out of especially if the parents are on drugs & the kids having to raise themselves. The truth is, you yourself are quick to criticize but you couldn’t do it yourself.

Juvenile life? I thought at 16 I knew everything, now 2 decades older, I know I had just scratched the surface. Theres s plethora of research that states the adolescent's mind is undeveloped To jail a 16 year old for life is morally wrong. We should do better, we can do better!

I've been in recovery for 3 years. I changed my life around completely when I had my son. But I've been to prison 3 times and was on drugs for over 12 years. Now, (unrelated obviously), I need double hip replacements. I heard you speaking and was so inspired, and then when I saw you were an orthopedic surgeon I started crying because I wish you were my doctor! I'm having such complications because I can't find the right surgeon and I only have Medicaid.

But i just always wonder why are we congratulated for getting out of hard ghettos or bad neighborhoods but we as a people arent trying to get together as one and fight,figure and overcome whats causing our neighborhoods to become so hard to get out of in the first place.

I empathize to all the tough times you have experienced in life, most especially from childhood, family, environment, and other varied challenging circumstances only you know the details of... and have learned to cope and overcome/breakthrough from. You likely aware or may have heard what I am about to say/share wisdom wise next... That each person, including you, will always have the chance to transform one’s karma. In Buddhism we have this saying, “changing poison into medicine”, meaning transforming any negativity/bad/discomfort/hardship from one’s life into something positive overall. And that is what you did with your own life karma. Your very own “Human Revolution “.
“A great human revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation, and, further, will enable a change in the destiny of all humankind.”
You may, or may not, find this hard to believe but it’s okay ( this may come off beyond “EARTHly” understanding) ... in regards to your family and ancestors... speaking of transforming one’s karma, always for the better, that:
In, “Buddhism is about bringing happiness, joy and fulfillment to all. It enables us not only to become happy ourselves but to make causes for the enlightenment of our ancestors seven-plus generations back and for the happiness and prosperity of our children, grandchildren and descendants throughout future generations.
