I don’t think it’s that, at least not mainly, I think it’s that she knows RUclips is an unstable job. Meaning, being payed on youtube isn’t always guaranteed: RUclips could just pull the plug one day, guidelines and rules could change, views could drop, ads could drop, etc. I’m pretty sure Cristine has talked about this before.

I think Ben’s point about taking up a space is really valid. There are so many people who are desperate for that kind of opportunity and while I’ve always applauded Ben and Christine for keeping their normal jobs, his point made me see it in a new way. If he doesn’t need that job and income it’s good that it’s going to someone else.

I wish y’all didn’t feel so much guilt! I’m sure many of us understand that just because we don’t see the work doesn’t mean you both aren’t working. There’s tons of stuff we don’t see. And there’s tons we do! You both create at least 10 hours of content for us each week, not including the tedious setup. And not to mention all the HT stuff we don’t see. So congrats to Ben! I think this because it is something I have struggled with myself - I think Cristine has some unhealthy beliefs about work, and her worth being tied up in it. I really am not trying to insult her, I think she's so admirable, but I had to work really hard to deal with those thoughts when I was in too much pain to keep working, and it made me feel worthless. I know that's not her situation, but I think she's got some similar beliefs and it is causing some of the guilt for her. I really hope she takes care of herself and maybe sees a therapist if that seems appealing to her. She deserves it.
When Jenna Marbles retired I cried. But to know that she is happy and healthy and economically thriving fills me with joy. I wish you, Cristine, would take a break anytime you need one. It’s not like you are going to quit to „just“ be a youtuber, when you actually are running HT. I also don't think quitting to be "just" a RUclipsr would have necessarily been a bad thing. I totally understand encouraging kids to stay in school, and keep up a day job - I think that's important too. But there's also a point when taking care of yourself is most important, and there are only so many hours in the week. I'm sure many RUclipsrs work more hours than the average office worker. RUclips has less stability, so I hope those RUclipsrs are also making serious investments and saving money, and planning for a life where they might no longer be able to make money on RUclips. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't focus on the opportunity they currently have.

One thing that could help is to delegate more out to others if they don't want to drop things fully, editing can be outsourced, and as holo taco stabilizes further they can work to step away. But also I fully agree, if they want to drop it and walk away they should and have every right to, I hope they make the choice for themselves and not for watchers.
Perfectionism is such a mental health sink! Really hard to grind at that level for long (I say as I put in 14 hour days lol, gotta listen to the advice I give to clients).

A job isn't the only thing you can get up for in the morning. I do think you two were fortunate enough to fall into things you genuinely enjoy. I'm in my mid-20s and from what I see around me in my friends and older adults everyone just works to survive.
I'm in my 30s and I've only ever had one job that truly made me miserable and that's because I wasn't a good fit for the company (the company was very good to me I just wasn't the right person). I am now in a job I love. I love work, it gives me structure and social skills. But I do struggle with getting up every morning and going even if I know it's healthy for me and I'll be happy when I'm there. I took six months off a few years ago and it really messed with my mental health. You have to recognise what is right for you. I'll never retire, it would kill me.
Agreed. I'm 35 and while I've had a job I loved at one point, it doesn't have the financial stability to keep me afloat. I have a job I dislike but It pays the bills. If I were to win an insane amount of money and quit my job, I would honestly be happy. I have enough hobbies to keep myself constantly entertained and social with people, I've never been one to sleep in and "waste" the day but there's nothing wrong with that either. I feel like now I spend my life waiting for the weekend and holidays. I've thought about re-training in other work but the cost to do that, looking for roles in what I want to do and the pay would be not enough to sustain myself properly. It's not as simple for everyone and while Ben and Christine recognise they were lucky to love their jobs, I don't think they realise how really rare that is for the majority of people.
I don't hate my job but a lot of my colleagues agree they don't particularly love getting up in the morning to go to work that day. Personally I live from weekend to weekend and aspire to start a company from my own someday.
Grind culture can be so harmful. I deeply appreciate the honesty and vulnerability you both show in this episode. Burn out is real and can take 3-5 years to recover from. You have experienced emotional trauma and exponential change. Give yourself some time to enjoy life and rebalance your internal compass. 💜💜💜
This is true. It takes a long time to recover and not everyone understands that what it feels when you feel that your being is just so drained and don't know where to start again.
So true. I burnt out due to personal reasons in August and while I have ‘reintegrated’ I’m actually about to quit my job to take several months off to properly recover. I’m fortunate to do so, but taking care of one’s mental health is so important (and should be prioritised by governments as well)

I admire Cristine and her work ethic. As someone else who spread themselves way too thin leading to a slight mental break, it can be hard to admit that you can’t do it all. I have long felt some mixed feelings about Cristine's workaholism.... I don't think her level of constant hustling is as good of a thing to model for the younger generation as maybe she thinks it is. I'm glad to see this growth and awareness that you shouldn't put your entire life endlessly on hold for the sake of work, even if it sounds like maybe that lesson was painful. I hope we continue to see this modeling of proper work-life balance!
I feel like she's recently spoken about how she's very aware that she doesn't have a healthy relationship regarding work/life balance and purposely doesn't use her work ethic as a motivational or inspirational tool for her viewers. It's a good reminder that the people on our screens are precisely that - people - and to expect perfection from them is unfair. Her self-awareness is awesome, and I hope she is able to apply that awareness to better herself - mentally, physically, and socially.
I've felt the same. Like I NEED at least 7-8 hours of sleep daily to function, and I am concerned when I hear her say she is sleeping for 4 hours sometimes. It's also not my right to meddle in someone's private life either, but just like one of the recent collections, she needs proper work-life balance. I would not think any less of her if she decided to quit her government job or anything else. Just like how I love Jenna Marbles but if she felt that RUclips wasn't for her anymore, that is not my decision to make. You are allowed to change your mind because you matter before anyone else.

I find it weird that Canadian's talk about universal healthcare because a lot of services are not covered and about most people still have to pay out of pocket or use private health insurance to access certain services. Prescriptions are also not subsidised by the government. Its's better than the US but that's not saying much. What is covered by tax also differs province to province
They are fortunate enough to pay for indepedent health care on their own regardless without a job provided one. That's what I do personally instead of thru my work

I work at a company that is remote-first. I've been working remotely for over 4 years and tbh nothing was worse for me than having to go to the office. I hated the commute, the noise, the disturbances, the fixed hours, the public toilets, the forces conversations - all of it. Having full ownership of where and when I work is the best thing that happened to me. Our office is approx a 15-minute walk from my home, I go there like once a year when there's a party 😀 Having said that, there are colleagues who go into the office every day because that's what they prefer. And I think that is how it's supposed to be - you choose how and where you are the most productive and happiest.
I wish more companies had this mindset. Everyone has a different way of working and being productive. Not all of us were built to sit in an office 9-5 Monday-Friday. I work remote for my company as well and I am SO much more productive. No distractions or people barging in to ask me questions unrelated to my work. if people need something, they can call me any time. I love it!
I'd feel like I was missing out if everyone was going into the office and I wasn't. But at the moment a day here and there is enough. I do feel weird if I NEVER see people. Plus video meetings are so awkward.
It depends on your home environment, honestly. My last 2 years of university were completely at home and it was terrible. I live with 7 people (cousin, aunts, uncles, mom, grandma...) and it was horrible trying to concentrate with so much happening.

I've never thought negatively or judged Cristine, I'm so happy to have seen her and Ben grow amazing businesses and their life together. I'm sure she does see it! Just the anxiety is a hard thing to deal with while also being so incredibly busy. She's always been vocal about appreciating the support of her audience and the compassion. I'm sure it would be hurtful to have people think she doesn't feel this when she's been so clear of her stance.

Honestly, the fact that you've both had such consistent success and have managed to maintain careers outside of your online presence for this long is admirable. You've both had a rough past few years, and your audience supports whatever choices you have to make to preserve your energy.
I left my previous “dream job” when I was 34 (6 years ago tomorrow). I had one of those jobs that was really hard to get a foot in the door, and I felt so much guilt around finding a new thing that was more financially secure. I switched from animal biology to being a software developer. But once I realized how many students and part-time staff were so much more passionate and talented at my old job, that made it easier to choose to leave! The person who got my old spot is an amazing force in the industry now, and just is so much better in the job than I would have been. And I’m also infinitely happier in my new career, in ways that I never even considered when I moved on! So cheers to Ben on making a scary and great change! 34 seems old but looking back now, it was the perfect timing!

Something I've learned from Jenna M is that as much as I miss her deeply; I'm so glad she's happy and living for herself. Prior to COVID, I came close to a burnout and it took several panic attacks and nervous breakdowns to realise that I had to spent less time working and more time relaxing and enjoying myself. Good for you, Ben, for making that change! And Cristine, you've done amazing work for the government for several years now; give yourself a break and come back to it in a few years. Cristine, I think you are a wonderful role model, govt. stats job or not. You are a polish business owner (a very involved one at that), a streamer, a podcaster, occasional RUclipsr, influencer, homeowner, part runner of a household, partner and cat mom. You do so much that is inspirational! And choosing to take a break from certain things (or stop) when it is needed is ALSO setting a great example for us to pay attention to our own needs and wellbeing and make sure we are not overworking. That is a really important example that I think some people don't get, and need to understand their own worth. I think everyone will know that you're not taking anything for granted and work very hard. Ben, you are also a great role model too and this choice clearly makes sense for you right now - I am so glad that you've made the choice you needed to in order to ensure you can balance work and living your life outside of work in the best way you can. And I hope that you do have at least some extra time to chill and do things you enjoy long term. Play is very important for the human mind!

Loss can really derail what you think you want in life. I lost my mother suddenly a few years ago and I left my office job within 6 months of that because it really made me think about how much time I have and what I want to do with it. Before I lost her, I was also indifferent on having children, but after she was gone, I realized that was something I wanted to get started sooner rather than later so that I could share it with the family I still had.
Your position has also changed so much since you started, it was different when you did a video once a week or so on the side from your day job, maybe it was "easier" to have both at the same time. You now have a full fledged business with Holo Taco and it's so much more time consuming, so it's very understanding. Glad you're both making good choices for yourselves.

This is incredible to hear. I'm 21 and I lost my Dad six months ago, and while doing that I've being doing my masters and working two part time jobs. I think there is something so incredibly valuable in prioritising people and life. To remember it's not all about work even when you love it so much (I love all my jobs and what I'm learning) and letting go of that is so hard. Beautifully said guys and I really appreciate hearing it.

The cleaning comment-totally my husband and I!!! We don’t clean as often as we should and it’s embarrassing. It was really validating hearing how you have difficulty finding time and maybe motivation to clean more frequently. We are also in our 30s around your age.
I think demonizing 9-5s comes from the POV of something with privilege. I’m an immigrant and my dad worked in the fields to get us here. Working a steady 9-5 (it’s actually 6:30-3) with good benefits is a DREAM. I love how you guys are very grounded and understand how the actual world works. You two are the best :’)
The opinion isn't specifically about 8 hours/day jobs, but about all fixed jobs. It just so happens that the 8 hours was one of the biggest victories of labor unions at the start of the 20th century, so officially longer work days don't exist.
@@johndododoe1411 I work 12 hour shifts in blue collar quit my 9-5 job of four years. I get 13 -14 days off a month. And know what its nice. I rather work the longer shift. And have time outside of work to do nothing, see friends, workout, or even just stay home. etc Im happy to have the job I got now.

So many other RUclipsrs who just seem to be truly obnoxious, jerks seem to get away with so much and still be able to have so much. It always makes me happy to hear about whenever Ben & Christine have made decisions that are beneficial to their own health and happiness, no matter what it is. I don't think any less of them for doing that. It's clear to me that their core values are still intact, and I don't think they would ever change. They care too much to let that happen.

You can’t do everything perfectly/really well - you come to an age where you realise you have to pick and choose what you focus your time and energy on (I’m almost 31 and am going through the same). Don’t feel guilty for recognising what you need. It doesn’t change our perception of you both as role models - if anything it makes us respect you more ☺️ Completely agree with you Ben about focusing on all the important things life has to offer, not just work. Life is about far more.

Man this is so validating to hear on so many fronts. I thought I'd love working from home and really struggled doing it every day with my home life being right in front of me and not being able to focus on work projects in that tunnel vision kind of way I can at the office. I've really been appreciating how the pandemic opened my eyes to making sure I don't dismiss the projects and opportunities I want to pursue outside of my day-job. I'm currently on a work hiatus to explore those things (fortunate I can) and it's been really refreshing to pursue other kinds of work.
I'm so, so happy for you guys to have found such financial stability so young to pursue passion projects, but have also worked at a job you've loved and retired as early as you liked. hi Cristine, I just want to say that it is super nice that you show us that you also have a "serious" job, and that it is possible to do fun things and not be defined only by one thing. My wife has a very similar job to you, working with statistics for the government, but she also does theater, improv, sings (and currently is getting her masters!). We have conversations like the ones in this video very often, and we both are so happy with our jobs but also with the other things we do, and our goal is to save enough money to work less and enjoy life more

I would say if you were to retire tomorrow and stop doing all jobs, you would still be a role model. My boss announced his retirement from the company I work at the other week. He's only 46, and I'm happy for him, but I can't help but feel a twinge of resentment. Us workers on the lower rung have not gotten raises in close to 3 years now, but yeah, boss man gets to retire early.
I completely relate with where Ben is coming from… I love my 9-5 job. I work in an architecture firm and having a structure/ routine in my day to day makes my day better but it is really hard to not feel guilty that i do not use my vacations or PTO to spend more Time with family since they live in another country and I wonder sometimes how to Balance both things… i guess you learn and grow. As someone who combines a job in law with youtube (on a much lower scale), this episode spoke to me so much. Especially the point where you explained that you might be able to do it all, but not to be able to do it well or that you literally work from morning until evening and don't spend enough time on meaningful relationships. You both have been and still are an amazing influence. The work ethic is still there, and the "serious" part is still there. We all know that what you do is not JUST all creative and fun, but also a lot of business. Thank you so much for this episode!
I feel like both of you have been such a positive influence on my life, I started watching when I was like 12 and now I'm almost 19, at university getting a degree in History and Economics, whilst managing a job that i love! HT is not solely Ben's responsibility. They run it together. And no longer having the obligation to his day job does mean there will be more time for rest and relaxation. Cristine seems to be the work o holic, not Ben. I'm happy and excited for him that he'll have more free time to pursue passion projects as opposed to how hard they've worked the last decade getting the HT channels and company going. He's worked hard. He deserves a vacay.

You both have been an excellent example of how to live a meaningful and honest life. You've been honest about how hard work and luck interact and are a great example of setting boundaries even if it feels weird for you in work and personal vs public lives. Please don't stick with anything for a feeling of obligation to an opportunity, whether that be work, main channel videos or anything else. Life changes and what you want changes and you have the freedom to live completely authentically, and I'd say that's the best thing anyone can do.
We had a Rule of 70. If your age and your years of service equaled 70 you could retire. I received less pension but I was able to be home to care for my Dad for his last ten years.
Cristine, I love you and I want you to know that you should never feel guilty for not posting, or taking breaks, as much as you feel like you've been given these opportunities from your fans, you don't owe us everything. Being able to go on leave (albeit without pay) for 12 months and still have a sure job to come back to sounds incredible. Is that standard for all government jobs in Canada?
Seriously. If I had access to this, there's a chance I would have returned to work after my daughter came home and my FMLA ran out. I know Canada isn't some flawless utopia, but there are days America feels like a hostage situation.
I don't know the specifics but here are certain circumstances where you can do this in Germany too. In any kind of job; it doesn't need to be a higher position or government.
Comgrats on retirement! Feel funny to say that to someone a year younger than me lol. I'm one of those people that if I won the lottery, I'd happily quit working. I've always had cashier positions and never really LOVED working. I'd rather be crocheting or sewing, both things for me to wear/use but also to sell. I guess I'd still be "working" in that sense, but it would be for myself instead of a corporation. Again congrats! I'm so happy that you are able to do this!
You guys need to cut yourselves some slack please. Yes, you have worked incredibly hard AND had some awesome luck along the way - this is a great thing. I know you both have long been idolized for working full time while running all the activities of Simply Nailogical Inc., and you might (as you get into at 21:56) have the perception that you're letting yourselves/others down by giving up one part of that identity, but I think striving for balance is such a healthy thing to model.
Your authenticity couldn't be any more obvious to your loyal viewers. I don't think, anything that was discussed today, came as a shock to any of us. You have always been genuine, honest, transparent, sincere and humble. Your personal character comes through in all you do. I always thought there was an unspoken understanding about this and it would just be the matter of timing. I'm so very proud of you both. I don’t think it’s that, at least not mainly, I think it’s that she knows RUclips is an unstable job. Meaning, being payed on youtube isn’t always guaranteed: RUclips could just pull the plug one day, guidelines and rules could change, views could drop, ads could drop, etc. I’m pretty sure Cristine has talked about this before.

There are so many people who are desperate for that kind of opportunity and while I’ve always applauded Ben and Christine for keeping their normal jobs, his point made me see it in a new way. If he doesn’t need that job and income it’s good that it’s going to someone else.

I wish y’all didn’t feel so much guilt! I’m sure many of us understand that just because we don’t see the work doesn’t mean you both aren’t working. There’s tons of stuff we don’t see. And there’s tons we do! You both create at least 10 hours of content for us each week, not including the tedious setup. And not to mention all the HT stuff we don’t see. So congrats to Ben! I think this because it is something I have struggled with myself - I think Cristine has some unhealthy beliefs about work, and her worth being tied up in it. I really am not trying to insult her, I think she's so admirable, but I had to work really hard to deal with those thoughts when I was in too much pain to keep working, and it made me feel worthless. I know that's not her situation, but I think she's got some similar beliefs and it is causing some of the guilt for her. I really hope she takes care of herself and maybe sees a therapist if that seems appealing to her. She deserves it.
When Jenna Marbles retired I cried. But to know that she is happy and healthy and economically thriving fills me with joy.

It’s not like you are going to quit to „just“ be a youtuber, when you actually are running HT. I also don't think quitting to be "just" a RUclipsr would have necessarily been a bad thing. I totally understand encouraging kids to stay in school, and keep up a day job - I think that's important too. But there's also a point when taking care of yourself is most important, and there are only so many hours in the week.
I'm sure many RUclipsrs work more hours than the average office worker. RUclips has less stability, so I hope those RUclipsrs are also making serious investments and saving money, and planning for a life where they might no longer be able to make money on RUclips. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't focus on the opportunity they currently have.
If you both wanted to quit RUclips, Holo Taco, all of it and walk away. That's totally fine! It's your lives! We are just happy that you both have shared some of it with us! Please take care of yourselves!!! Thank you for sharing and everything you do!
One thing that could help is to delegate more out to others if they don't want to drop things fully, editing can be outsourced, and as holo taco stabilizes further they can work to step away. But also I fully agree, if they want to drop it and walk away they should and have every right to, I hope they make the choice for themselves and not for watchers.

I do think you two were fortunate enough to fall into things you genuinely enjoy. I'm in my mid-20s and from what I see around me in my friends and older adults everyone just works to survive.
I'm in my 30s and I've only ever had one job that truly made me miserable and that's because I wasn't a good fit for the company (the company was very good to me I just wasn't the right person). I am now in a job I love. I love work, it gives me structure and social skills. But I do struggle with getting up every morning and going even if I know it's healthy for me and I'll be happy when I'm there. I took six months off a few years ago and it really messed with my mental health. You have to recognise what is right for you. I'll never retire, it would kill me.
Agreed. I'm 35 and while I've had a job I loved at one point, it doesn't have the financial stability to keep me afloat. I have a job I dislike but It pays the bills.
If I were to win an insane amount of money and quit my job, I would honestly be happy. I have enough hobbies to keep myself constantly entertained and social with people, I've never been one to sleep in and "waste" the day but there's nothing wrong with that either.
I feel like now I spend my life waiting for the weekend and holidays. I've thought about re-training in other work but the cost to do that, looking for roles in what I want to do and the pay would be not enough to sustain myself properly.
It's not as simple for everyone and while Ben and Christine recognise they were lucky to love their jobs, I don't think they realise how really rare that is for the majority of people.
I don't hate my job but a lot of my colleagues agree they don't particularly love getting up in the morning to go to work that day. Personally I live from weekend to weekend and aspire to start a company from my own someday.

This is true. It takes a long time to recover and not everyone understands that what it feels when you feel that your being is just so drained and don't know where to start again.
So true. I burnt out due to personal reasons in August and while I have ‘reintegrated’ I’m actually about to quit my job to take several months off to properly recover. I’m fortunate to do so, but taking care of one’s mental health is so important (and should be prioritised by governments as well)
so true! my partner has been going through pretty serious burnout and has been on disability for the past few months. people who can take the breaks or retire early (if they want to) ought to! it's so worthwhile. it would be so much better for society if more folks could retire safety. more happier safe people makes for a better society.

I admire Cristine and her work ethic. As someone else who spread themselves way too thin leading to a slight mental break, it can be hard to admit that you can’t do it all. It's a good reminder that the people on our screens are precisely that - people - and to expect perfection from them is unfair.
Her self-awareness is awesome, and I hope she is able to apply that awareness to better herself - mentally, physically, and socially.
I've felt the same. Like I NEED at least 7-8 hours of sleep daily to function, and I am concerned when I hear her say she is sleeping for 4 hours sometimes. It's also not my right to meddle in someone's private life either, but just like one of the recent collections, she needs proper work-life balance. I would not think any less of her if she decided to quit her government job or anything else. Just like how I love Jenna Marbles but if she felt that RUclips wasn't for her anymore, that is not my decision to make. You are allowed to change your mind because you matter before anyone else.
The American in me automatically was like "what about healthcare?!" And then I realized your country isn't dumb and actually has universal healthcare. Congrats Ben!
I find it weird that Canadian's talk about universal healthcare because a lot of services are not covered and about most people still have to pay out of pocket or use private health insurance to access certain services. Prescriptions are also not subsidised by the government. Its's better than the US but that's not saying much. What is covered by tax also differs province to province
They are fortunate enough to pay for indepedent health care on their own regardless without a job provided one. That's what I do personally instead of thru my work

I work at a company that is remote-first. I've been working remotely for over 4 years and tbh nothing was worse for me than having to go to the office. I hated the commute, the noise, the disturbances, the fixed hours, the public toilets, the forces conversations - all of it.
Having full ownership of where and when I work is the best thing that happened to me. Our office is approx a 15-minute walk from my home, I go there like once a year when there's a party 😀
Having said that, there are colleagues who go into the office every day because that's what they prefer. And I think that is how it's supposed to be - you choose how and where you are the most productive and happiest.
I wish more companies had this mindset. Everyone has a different way of working and being productive. Not all of us were built to sit in an office 9-5 Monday-Friday. I work remote for my company as well and I am SO much more productive. No distractions or people barging in to ask me questions unrelated to my work. if people need something, they can call me any time. I love it!
I'd feel like I was missing out if everyone was going into the office and I wasn't. But at the moment a day here and there is enough. I do feel weird if I NEVER see people. Plus video meetings are so awkward.
It depends on your home environment, honestly. My last 2 years of university were completely at home and it was terrible. I live with 7 people (cousin, aunts, uncles, mom, grandma...) and it was horrible trying to concentrate with so much happening.
You are normal people in an abnormal position in life! This podcast was beautifully done. You have both worked hard to get where you are and deserve everything that you have. I hope that you do not remain too burdened by the guilt that you are feeling.

Watching this really broke my heart just for the amount of guilt and the mind-reading thought traps Cristine projects! I've never thought negatively or judged Cristine, I'm so happy to have seen her and Ben grow amazing businesses and their life together. Cristine puts so much thought and care into what she does and I wish she could see how appreciative her fans are of her.
I'm sure she does see it! Just the anxiety is a hard thing to deal with while also being so incredibly busy. She's always been vocal about appreciating the support of her audience and the compassion. I left my previous “dream job” when I was 34 (6 years ago tomorrow). I had one of those jobs that was really hard to get a foot in the door, and I felt so much guilt around finding a new thing that was more financially secure. I switched from animal biology to being a software developer. But once I realized how many students and part-time staff were so much more passionate and talented at my old job, that made it easier to choose to leave! The person who got my old spot is an amazing force in the industry now, and just is so much better in the job than I would have been. And I’m also infinitely happier in my new career, in ways that I never even considered when I moved on!
So cheers to Ben on making a scary and great change! 34 seems old but looking back now, it was the perfect timing!

Prior to COVID, I came close to a burnout and it took several panic attacks and nervous breakdowns to realise that I had to spent less time working and more time relaxing and enjoying myself. Cristine, I think you are a wonderful role model, govt. stats job or not. You are a polish business owner (a very involved one at that), a streamer, a podcaster, occasional RUclipsr, influencer, homeowner, part runner of a household, partner and cat mom. You do so much that is inspirational! And choosing to take a break from certain things (or stop) when it is needed is ALSO setting a great example for us to pay attention to our own needs and wellbeing and make sure we are not overworking. That is a really important example that I think some people don't get, and need to understand their own worth. I think everyone will know that you're not taking anything for granted and work very hard.
Ben, you are also a great role model too and this choice clearly makes sense for you right now - I am so glad that you've made the choice you needed to in order to ensure you can balance work and living your life outside of work in the best way you can. And I hope that you do have at least some extra time to chill and do things you enjoy long term. Play is very important for the human mind!

Loss can really derail what you think you want in life.
I lost my mother suddenly a few years ago and I left my office job within 6 months of that because it really made me think about how much time I have and what I want to do with it. Before I lost her, I was also indifferent on having children, but after she was gone, I realized that was something I wanted to get started sooner rather than later so that I could share it with the family I still had.
Your position has also changed so much since you started, it was different when you did a video once a week or so on the side from your day job, maybe it was "easier" to have both at the same time. You now have a full fledged business with Holo Taco and it's so much more time consuming, so it's very understanding. Glad you're both making good choices for yourselves.
I have always held a deep respect for both of you, but I respect you even more for being such open and authentic people. I consistently look you to hear educated & informed discussions that stimulate my mind. Part of your credibility comes from the sincerity and vulnerabilities that you share. Sorry that I can't articulate myself better, but regardless, thank you for sharing your lives. 💖
I’m totally the opposite! We’re going back into the office and I’ve been contemplating quitting. Going into the office feels like such a waste of time and money. It’s really given me my life back.
Guys you need to work through this guilt. Creating a life that is sustainable that has boundaries does not mean you are ungrateful for the success you've had online. When on vacation my dad will say "you can't spend money when you're dead". You guys need to enjoy the fruits of your labour. Please go on vacation, fuck covid.

I worked almost 50 hours a week between 3 jobs AND went to a fairly prestigious university full-time with a double major, and still had a robust personal/social life. In my mid 30's... This is incredible to hear. I'm 21 and I lost my Dad six months ago, and while doing that I've being doing my masters and working two part time jobs. I think there is something so incredibly valuable in prioritising people and life. To remember it's not all about work even when you love it so much (I love all my jobs and what I'm learning) and letting go of that is so hard. Beautifully said guys and I really appreciate hearing it.

The cleaning comment-totally my husband and I!!! We don’t clean as often as we should and it’s embarrassing. It was really validating hearing how you have difficulty finding time and maybe motivation to clean more frequently. We are also in our 30s around your age.
I think demonizing 9-5s comes from the POV of something with privilege. I’m an immigrant and my dad worked in the fields to get us here. Working a steady 9-5 (it’s actually 6:30-3) with good benefits is a DREAM. I love how you guys are very grounded and understand how the actual world works. You two are the best :’)
The opinion isn't specifically about 8 hours/day jobs, but about all fixed jobs. It just so happens that the 8 hours was one of the biggest victories of labor unions at the start of the 20th century, so officially longer work days don't exist.
@@johndododoe1411 I work 12 hour shifts in blue collar quit my 9-5 job of four years. I get 13 -14 days off a month. And know what its nice. I rather work the longer shift. And have time outside of work to do nothing, see friends, workout, or even just stay home. etc Im happy to have the job I got now.
Im happy to hear the both of y’all would be just fine without having to rely on the money from here on RUclips. So many other RUclipsrs who just seem to be truly obnoxious, jerks seem to get away with so much and still be able to have so much. You can’t do everything perfectly/really well - you come to an age where you realise you have to pick and choose what you focus your time and energy on (I’m almost 31 and am going through the same). Don’t feel guilty for recognising what you need. It doesn’t change our perception of you both as role models - if anything it makes us respect you more ☺️ Completely agree with you Ben about focusing on all the important things life has to offer, not just work. Life is about far more.
I hope cristine realizes that she is a very good influence on us, but also it is not fair to put that pressure on herself to always do the right thing in the public eye and she doesn't have to be a rolemodel for us. She could just exist and we would still enjoy her content.

Man this is so validating to hear on so many fronts. I thought I'd love working from home and really struggled doing it every day with my home life being right in front of me and not being able to focus on work projects in that tunnel vision kind of way I can at the office. I've really been appreciating how the pandemic opened my eyes to making sure I don't dismiss the projects and opportunities I want to pursue outside of my day-job. I'm currently on a work hiatus to explore those things (fortunate I can) and it's been really refreshing to pursue other kinds of work.
I'm so, so happy for you guys to have found such financial stability so young to pursue passion projects, but have also worked at a job you've loved and retired as early as you liked. That's the dream isn't it? You've both worked so hard, you've been so encouraging to everyone to pursue your dreams, it's wonderful to see you pursue yours, and see how your dreams form over the years

hi Cristine, I just want to say that it is super nice that you show us that you also have a "serious" job, and that it is possible to do fun things and not be defined only by one thing. My wife has a very similar job to you, working with statistics for the government, but she also does theater, improv, sings (and currently is getting her masters!). We have conversations like the ones in this video very often, and we both are so happy with our jobs but also with the other things we do, and our goal is to save enough money to work less and enjoy life more

I would say if you were to retire tomorrow and stop doing all jobs, you would still be a role model. You have always been such a positive figure and Ben and you have always given us different takes and empathise with people we can't see or aren't real to us.

My boss announced his retirement from the company I work at the other week. He's only 46, and I'm happy for him, but I can't help but feel a twinge of resentment. Us workers on the lower rung have not gotten raises in close to 3 years now, but yeah, boss man gets to retire early.

As someone who combines a job in law with youtube (on a much lower scale), this episode spoke to me so much. Especially the point where you explained that you might be able to do it all, but not to be able to do it well or that you literally work from morning until evening and don't spend enough time on meaningful relationships. You both have been and still are an amazing influence. The work ethic is still there, and the "serious" part is still there. We all know that what you do is not JUST all creative and fun, but also a lot of business. Thank you so much for this episode!

HT is not solely Ben's responsibility. They run it together. And no longer having the obligation to his day job does mean there will be more time for rest and relaxation. Cristine seems to be the work o holic, not Ben. I'm happy and excited for him that he'll have more free time to pursue passion projects as opposed to how hard they've worked the last decade getting the HT channels and company going. He's worked hard. He deserves a vacay.

You both have been an excellent example of how to live a meaningful and honest life. You've been honest about how hard work and luck interact and are a great example of setting boundaries even if it feels weird for you in work and personal vs public lives. Please don't stick with anything for a feeling of obligation to an opportunity, whether that be work, main channel videos or anything else. Life changes and what you want changes and you have the freedom to live completely authentically, and I'd say that's the best thing anyone can do.
We had a Rule of 70. If your age and your years of service equaled 70 you could retire. I received less pension but I was able to be home to care for my Dad for his last ten years.

It's pretty standard for government jobs even for non-execs (speaking as a low level Canadian government employee)
Seriously. If I had access to this, there's a chance I would have returned to work after my daughter came home and my FMLA ran out. I know Canada isn't some flawless utopia, but there are days America feels like a hostage situation.
I don't know the specifics but here are certain circumstances where you can do this in Germany too. In any kind of job; it doesn't need to be a higher position or government.

Comgrats on retirement! Feel funny to say that to someone a year younger than me lol. I'm one of those people that if I won the lottery, I'd happily quit working. I've always had cashier positions and never really LOVED working. I'd rather be crocheting or sewing, both things for me to wear/use but also to sell. I guess I'd still be "working" in that sense, but it would be for myself instead of a corporation.

I appreciate this episode so much. I know you both have long been idolized for working full time while running all the activities of Simply Nailogical Inc., and you might (as you get into at 21:56) have the perception that you're letting yourselves/others down by giving up one part of that identity, but I think striving for balance is such a healthy thing to model.
Your authenticity couldn't be any more obvious to your loyal viewers. I don't think, anything that was discussed today, came as a shock to any of us. You have always been genuine, honest, transparent, sincere and humble. Your personal character comes through in all you do. I always thought there was an unspoken understanding about this and it would just be the matter of timing. I'm so very proud of you both.
