I am like Adrienne. I can take all the smoke. But coming for those I love, social injustices and certain immoral situations involving women, children, I can be defensive about. Because it effects humanity and the people I love and care about.
True A....I will definitely be defensive about my people for sure! But I do get what Garcelle is saying. The conversation actually flows better when you start off positive because people in general dont respond well to negative right off the jump. They will feel like they are being attacked.
As someone who has actually gone to therapy for losing jobs due to being overly defensive, here’s my advice on dealing with defensive people. PUT THE COMPLEMENT AT THE END. I’m tell you this works so much better because the last thing they hear before they react is something positive so they will react slightly more calm.
The key in this subject matter is the approach...you can get straight to the point about what bothers you, but tone in delivery is key. Tone is important, very important.
