For me, this was simply one of the greatest and most subtly depicted fictional love stories I have ever seen. Great, because it avoids cliche and shows love in its purest form. As every other character close to Ji-An and Dong-Hoon observes during the series (including the grandma and Dong Hoon’s own wife), theirs is a special and precious connection. It is beyond words and conventional descriptions. Soul mates? Yes, but clearly more than that I think. This was ultimately an intensely beautiful and respectful love between a man and a woman. Admittedly, its overt expression was repressed due to the age gap, the conservative nature of Korean society and Dong Hoon’s own admirable care for doing the right thing by Ji-An. But it was that repression and need, especially by Dong Hoon, to observe social boundaries, that ultimately gave it its dramatic power, in my view. Ever the stoic and the man who put duty before temptation, Dong Hoon is liberated only in the last episode. The production suggests as much in the transformed light and tone and his own almost beatific smile. While not said openly, it seems clear his marriage is finally over. As for Ji-An, she is no longer the lost and desperate fringe-dweller dependent on him. They now meet as equals. And the look of unrestrained happiness on Dong Hoon’s face upon seeing her again tells you a real adult relationship is possible. She has a new self-respect and remains as drawn to him as she always was, but now from an equal standing. I recalled what I see as the most penetrating observation of Dong Hoon in the entire series. It was during his visit to his Buddhist monk friend. The wise monk urges him to stop living for everybody else and seek out his own happiness. After that, Dong Hoon’s grim, perpetually self-restrained stoicism starts to crack. The breakdown scene in episode 16 is when the edifice finally collapses. And, no, I don’t think the tears were for his estranged wife. That marriage had been dead for some time. The tears were for the loss of Ji-An, the person who saved his life (by his own admission) and who had understood him more than anyone else in his life. This is why their chance meeting was so beautiful and so full of possibility. As to why there is so much disagreement among fans of the show about the nature of the central characters’ relationship, my guess is that is a reflection of different perspectives among its creators. I think the relationship is written as one between platonic soulmates, but it is directed and scored as a romance. The long soulful looks, the emotional punch of the brilliant songs and incidental music, the running to each other are all indications of something much more than friendship. But that inherent tension about the indefinable nature of their love is also what keeps you watching. This was an impeccably written, sensitively directed, exquisitely acted TV drama. It’s certainly the best Korean drama I’ve seen and perhaps the best television drama full stop - one full of intensely moving and life-affirming insights into the power of love, human connection, community and the nature of happiness. On a final note, the sudden death late last year of Lee Sun-Kyung, who played Dong Hoon, was such a tragedy. He was a nuanced, selfless and brilliant actor. More than anything, in my view, it was his on-screen chemistry and unspoken dance of the soul with the beautiful and charismatic IU that made My Mister such an unforgettable experience
I was bawling at the end. Especially, the last few eps hit me so hard, I could not stop watching one eps after another. The show demonstrates the power of caring of others. If Dong Hoon did not pay attention to Ji An, the domino effect may not have started. If the old gentleman who cleans the office did not show his support at Ji An's graduation, if Ji An didn't notice Guang Il's thoughtfulness as a kid... these small kindness can change someone's life and this script captures that so well. The backdrop of the story, each character development, and the props like the wiretapping/earphones, the sandal, the shopping cart, the instant coffee... it is like you are living there with the characters. I've watched a lot of K-dramas but this one hit me the hardest and kudos to those who produced it. If US shows can learn from these creators, I think it would be great for the industry. Thanks for the great review!
I just finished watching this show. At first I only watch this after watching IU’s Hotel Del Luna. I wanna watch more of her work. But after watching episode 1 I totally fall in love with the story. Every bits pf this drama is so great. It makes you think, reflect and feel your deepest emotion. Part of me can relate to every character. It’s painful yet healing. It kinda gives that faith to human kindness. That there are still genuinely kind people in this cruel world.
I watch this drama just now, after my brother suggest me to. This drama was soo good even sometimes the scene without any dialogue can hold many feelings. I don't know how can they do that. The political conflict also not bored me the love here is soo mature not "romance love" things. But love for other human being. Watching this drama is like you are home drinking a warm soup after a hard cold day if you get what I mean. After finished it I just want to hear something more about this drama and start searching anywhere for some review for this drama. I want to see other people excitment about this drama that toootally deserve it. Then I find your vid, I love how you explain it from criminology student pov. And yes IU acting is sooo much developed in this drama, I still can't forget the shocked that I had when I watch 1st ep and saw her act. Anywahy sorry for ranting this long I just love this drama too much 😂
I lost track of how many kdramas I've seen but the two leads are easily my favorite of all. Mainly because all the characters were deep but mainly the two leads. The girl is easily the most interesting character of any drama the watched.
I have had this drama on my Watch List for years now, but just couldn't get motivated to watch it in spite of the very high ratings and awards, because someone told me it was very depressing. With the passing of the ML a few days ago, I decided I need to watch it for sure, and looked for a review just to get some insights. Thank you for letting me know it's a show about hope. I believe I will begin it as soon as I finish Castaway Diva.
I'm Korean. I'm Also American. I've been watching dramas for decades including kdramas. This is the best drama I have ever watched, bar none from East or West.
Passed this over numerous times. Just happened to click on it and boy Oh boy - am I glad I did . the acting verbal and non verbal was superb The story and depth of characters were sublime. I have literally just finished watching it and I gobsmacked. Everyone should watch this. So so many life lessons here. I could go on and on 😊
Love your review! This drama gets better everytime I watch it..it's so well scripted, acted, directed and sound designed..it's so real and yet poetic...not just entertainment but life-changing .i am trying to get people to watch it too👍😜
Incomparable!! Complex characters intertwined to form a beautiful story. It is not a love story, but you can feel a different kind of love with a deeper meaning. I love the character of Dong hoon. He is a total package of a real gentleman. On the other hand, Ji-an as a loving grandaughter, tough and fierce in her battle to live. Watching this film was a roller coaster of emotions. A lot of reference to reflect on life, living and loving. Even the sounds of their deep breaths, sounds of their steps and the looks in their eyes tell a story. And every intense scene cut like a knife that leaves you breathless. I needed to rest my mind after watching this film...in a good way. It made me think of my life in the past, my present and the choices in the future. ❤️ This film deserve an international recognition!👏👏👏
I passed this over so many times, but after seeing IU in Hotel Del Luna, I gave it a shot and boy was I blown away. This is hands down one of the best kdramas out there.
I just finished the drama in September 2021 and I totally agreed with you! I came across to see the show in NetFlix and I didn't know why I selected to watch the show. I finished the show twice in 3 days because I couldn't push away the story from my mind. The best drama I've ever seen in my life.
This is one of the very few TV series that I wanted to get a hard copy of it in DVD or Blue Ray so I can treasure it for the rest of my life. I can’t wait to watch it a second time after I binged it on Netflix in two days.
Take home message from this series was in final episode when Gramma told Ji An that all relationships are special and precious... And then the camera zooms slo-mo onto Sanghoon who paid for the funeral, and Donghoon for everything he's done for Ji An. Omg heart melt moment.
Not sure what to expect when I clicked just because I wanted to hear more about My Mister. Truly enjoyed your synopsis and reaction. As you said about the drama, it feels too short. The trajectory of the drama was surprising - the characters in the drama came alive in their development. It is inspiring to see how damaged individuals find their salvation, overcoming the the misery they encountered. However desperate or dooming, there is a reason to be optimistic for finding happiness in life. While celebrating the positive outlook of life, it doesn't diminish or understate the struggle or the sacrifice for getting there. Your viewpoint on criminality is rather refreshing - have never hear that one before. Kudos to the entire production team, up and down the the chain, direction, music, script, acting - simply outstanding. Was IU's fan for her music. Just acquired a new respect for her acting. But the drama made all the actors memorable. Thank you for rekindling my excitement for My Mister after I finished watching it weeks ago.
What a lovely comment, thank you so much. I'm happy to see so many others online loved this show as much as I do; as no one in my personal life is interested in watching k-dramas. My Mister is a criminologists candy shop! I would love to do a video analysis of it one day, breaking down the characters behaviors (probably just the 2 leads) and related theories...just thinking about it gets me excited. However, I don't think my editing skills are there yet, so that video will have to wait haha.
Not everyday I get to hear the perspective from a criminologist. I understand your comment about the actors were not characters. The story they told through their convincing acting comes across so alive and realistic. Often when you trace the origin of criminal behavior far back enough, one notices all the developmental factors that shape the future criminal behavior. In case of My Mister, it was willing to be patient in exploring the why's without rushing to judgment, and gives the characters an opportunity for redemption. It was...human. Actually your idea of breaking down the character's sounds very interesting and meritorious, with the potential to reach a larger audience by riding on the name of the right drama and characters. I hope you will consider it some more. Many of the dramas we watch are simply replicas of human behavior. There could be some really exciting materials to explore as you suggested. Cheers.
Its good to know others, like yourself, would be interested in such a video. Thanks for the encouragement! And you're right, criminals don't suddenly appear- they are largely products of their environment.
Thanks for the articulate and thorough review of the best drama I've ever seen (especially off-script)! The best part of it for me was how tight the story was - the lack of filler kept me emotionally invested and curious about all the characters, with the ending providing enough closure. Honestly with this and now Hotel Del Luna, IU is the most significant Korean cultural icon...
100% agree, IU is a superstar 😍🤩. I didnt like 2 brothers at first, but as the show progressed I feel in love with all the characters. Each to me has a purpose and a lesson to share with the audience. Still my #1 favorite drama (but a few recent watches have come close 😋)
Damn. I’m scared now. This will be my 3rd kdrama. Started with extraordinary Atty woo, I had a EAW fever for a good month. 2nd is it’s ok to not be ok, I’m still having the fever even after 2 weeks. Thought I would start on my mister to get rid of the it’s ok fever. But looks like I’ll be also getting the same outcome after watching my mister?! Why do we do these to ourselves!
I would argue that Ji An very much so was in love with the male lead. And he was admirable in keeping his distance while still understanding that they both needed each other.
I saw all news from the time the drama was announced, who would be the leads and first script reading. But the age difference and seemingly the depression I saw from the posters, thru me off for a long time. Until I finally gave it a change after 3 years of it's debut. Boy boy boy... i have no words for it!!! it's the only drama I saw again, full several times after! And I can't put any other drama on it's level even till now! "My liberation Notes" is great too, I I see the same quality of production, but still "My Mister" can't be surpassed. And as for the leads..i already knew Lee Sung hyun was a star, but IU really solidified her place as a top actress with this drama. To any one who hasn't yet watched it, you are missing something great!!
I finished the drama yesterday I don't no what to say the best drama I ever saw it's beautiful I want more I want to live with them. I don't no why some don't like it because of the age difference of them but I must say their chemistry is so beautiful the pain the emotions I don't no what to say it's a masterpiece.
Wow i am glad to know that there are other people out there who felt the same as i did. You did not ramble.. but i should complain your video is not long enough. Yeah while hearing your review i got emotional oncz again....miss .Lee Sun Gyun and IU and Jung hee and her old flame? everyone there..such a master piece for a long long time..
did you listen to her song?..if not i recommend that you should..she is amazing! She have all kind of genre...I love all her songs it doesn't even make sense right but she have the ability to do that. you might not like it when you first listen to it but try to listen again and you will find yourself liking it..try her song "Dear Name"or "Blueming concert version"but she is a great singer so anything will be fine.. If you like this kind of series you should watch "Misaeng" it also talk about the reality of life. Promise you will not regret it...
I'm an Indian.. Nice to meet you.. Can you please tell me which type of drama is this? It's looking like a horror drama but I love to watch romantic kdramas.. ❤❤ I'm in love with Korean dramas and ❤Lee min Ho❤ oppa..🙈🙈
@@rashigoyal7640 it is not romantic movie. it is about a normal 30~40 ages man living normal life(looks normal but inside it's not) and young girl who suffered from hard life. at the same company. (i dont want to spoil the stories. it's on nexflix). it's very realistic and not fancy, but moving.
I just watched your review and you have so subtle and rich story telling skill and loved it. P.S: the side supporting computer nerd is one of 3 kids who grow up together including Kwang-il.. just for referance^^
Do u know the main actress in that drama is actually top singer in korea? Her singer name is I.U. 아이유. She is like a Tayler Swift of Korea. Acting is her just second job.
New to Kdramas. I'm on episode 6 and I'm hooked. I honestly find some of the corporate scenes with the CEO to be pretty boring but I get that it's necessary. I find myself hating Ji-An but at the same time understanding why she does what she does.
Yeah definitely an amazing piece of work that tugs at the heartstrings of the audience. I decided to watch this after watching the current Hotel Del Luna series with IU. Gotta say its really hard to top the storyline and scripting in My Mister. I do have quite a few complaints/nitpicks about My Mister though: - Side characters and stories were hit and miss. They could've cut the monk character and story arc completely and the show would be more or less the same. - As a programmer in real life, the main tech hack is difficult to see actually working as portrayed in the show even with the suspension of reality. Moreover with all the scrutiny over security at the company, tech gadgets owned by employees would most likely be secure under company policies. Admittedly this is a nitpick. Ultimately a wonderful show that I finished in 4 days of bingeing.
I'm also watching 'Hotel Del Luna' right now, and IU is such a powerhouse! Seeing her on screen again makes me want to rewatch 'My Mister' Thanks for sharing the tech perspective, it's an aspect of the show that I didnt pay much attention to because I'm a grandma at heart 🤷♀️😅. I dont think its nitpicky because that's your expertise, so the flaws are noticeable
Yeah, the hacking part was weak. I felt they created the friend character only to provide the hack and eves-dropping abilities. Also agree on the monk character getting a bit too much time, yes the message was that he had everything yet ran away to skirt his responsibilities in stark contrast to Ji-An who started out with the worst in life but choose to tough it out. Still, I felt they should have expanded more on the backstory regarding Ji-An's and the money lender's past as kids growing up abused.
I disagree. The monk's life was a contrast to the life everybody else was living. Chasing material needs, security, status, social approval - the monk did away with all of those. He was relatively at peace compared to everybody else. The monk's life was worth living. An honest life. As opposed to a life where you have something to hide, something to prove.
Good catch on the tech aspect. I glossed over it as necessary to the plot, but yeah it's weak. The Monk...the two comments below show two differing reactions to the character, both different from yours. Very interesting. Not needed at all. A stark contrast to Ji-An. A really different choice and viewpoint on life. Some validity to all three, I think. I'm personally glad they included him.
I finished it in 2 weeks. In my opinion it’s best to watch one episode a day on a large TV. Then the next morning read the synopsis and digest it. Let it sink in. Then watch the next episode in the evening.
It's definitely romantic love though hugely acted upon. Dong Hoon is just so straight laced and would not cross any overt romantic love expressions but definitely romantic yet very restrained. Very powerful love.
Man! That was an amazing series. I was re-watching some scenes even while I am playing the episode. I cried so much lol It was amazing how so many of the great scenes were just FL on her own without any dialogues. *Spoiler* The scene where she stops in the street, and start bowing and saying "I am Sorry" made me cry so hard, I had to stop watching for few minutes.
same PD made it, but i don't think foreigners would understand it, cause it's related to korean work culture. I think this PD's "Signal" is more worth to checking out. It's definitely masterpiece.
I'm a foreigner and apart from the work terms(which were explained through subtitles on Viki) I didn't really have a problem understanding. The drama focuses on the character's relationships between people inside and outside of the office, while also addressing their inner conflicts. Overall, it was easy for me to get into.
I find it really interesting that you as a criminology student find it very criminology text-book, while I, a psychology student, also think that the writer has a very deep understanding of human psychology. This made me even more curious about the writer, how did she achieve such a deep understanding of human? Did she formally study it or did she do an in-depth research or is she simply a very empathic person? I mean, I also read Dr. Frost and got amazed by how deep it goes to human psychology but the author studied psychology (at one of the best universities in Korea). I'm really curious about My Mister's scripwriter!
Let me join the line on this. I clicked on "Mister" only because I loved IU in "Hotel Del Luna" and thought I'd check it out despite the dumb title. Months later, this show still haunts me. It is not only the best Kdrama I've ever seen, but a world-class masterpiece that stands its own next to anything else. No flash, no fantasy, no high-rev action scenes (maybe a couple) - just a story of ordinary people dealing with the kinds of misery we could all run across. I loved all the cast, but this is the show where IU blew me away and permanently stole a piece of my heart. Although she's the co-lead, I was surprised that she's actually kept in the background for most of the show, and that the scenes she does have, have very little dialog or flashy acting - it's mostly just her face and body reacting to what she's hearing when she's alone, and she's absolutely devastatiing to watch. This is a show that will bring you to tears, and I'm a guy and Never cry at stupid stories; but this is just such an honest, heartfelt story where the good guys truly deserve their hard-fought peace at the end. I will rewatching this and recommend it to everyone to the end of my days as one of the finest dramatic series ever made. If you haven't seen it, watch it. You will never forget it.
Same exact story. Came from Hotel Del Luna, but wasn't sure about this show, mostly because of the title. But turns out it was a complete masterpiece, and one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Also, My Mister was added to me and my wife's top 5 Fav Kdrama's of all time. The director of My Mister also directed Misaeng and I loved that too and have watched that several times. I do plan on watching My Mister again. There was such depth in this drama and I loved that so much of the narrative gave credit to the audience to not have to spell everything out several times over as Kdramas have a tendency to do.
I didnt realize they were the same director! How deep and human the characters are and how much love and care is behind the camera really shows Misaeng and My Mister really are in a category of their own love them both, only just recently watched Misaeng -so glad I finally got around to watching it
I watched the first episode of Signal, as someone else also recommended it, and really enjoyed it...some great suspenseful moments. Ill get back to it eventually :)
Pretty much every other kdrama pales in comparison after watching this. There are tons of analysis on the drama in the Soompi My Ahjussi forum if you're interested. The relationship between Dong Hoon and Ji An feels ambiguous to me - I personally feel that it is up to viewers to interpret as they wish. HOWEVER the main focus is still on healing. *sigh* It's a great drama.
Soompi eh? Never heard of it, ill look it up ^_^ Id agree that most other kdramas pale. I gave My Ahjussi a 5/5, and for a drama to get that from me it has to include a theme or overall message, along with being well made and entertaining. Just started Mr.Sunshine and I think that shows of the same quality as My Ahjussi. Definitely too very different shows, but if your looking for something else to watch that has some substance to it- Id give Mr. Sunshine a try :)
Marie Maurer The thing is I'm not a fan of Mr Sunshine's writer - I dropped her show Descendents of the Sun, and I only watched Goblin primarily for its cast (GONG YOO YASSSS) Mr Sunshine's cast is strong so I will be checking it out once it reaches halfway, around 6 to 8 eps. (will get to do a bit of a drama marathon and less agony while waiting for new eps heh) The cinematography looks gorgeous!
Haha I am the exact same! I could not, for the life of me, get into Descendants of the Sun, and I never finished Goblin. I didn't even know that it was the same creator, if I had I would have been hesitant too- but im 6 episode into Mr.Sunshine and im hocked.
Marie Maurer haha well if it got you hooked, more reason for me to try Mr Sunshine out! I just finished Secretary Kim (I needed the fluffiness to counter my post My Ahjussi feels) It was so sweet and fwuffy and lovey-dovey cringey *cue all my curled fingers and toes* but it was a fun watch. Have you tried "Again Oh Hae Young?" It's from My Ahjussi's writer. It's because of her that I watched My Ahjussi. I don't think it is as good but as a romcom it's quite nice.
sorry about not responding, im just going threw old comments and finding so many that i didnt get notifications for! I thought Secretary Kim was so cute as well. Such an easy light hearted watch. No i havent seen Again Oh Hae Young, but after My Ahjussi i think ill give anything by the same writer a chance.
Thanks for your candid review on this show. Even In S.K. this show set the general viewers' perspective on TV show broader and higher so that other typical K style romance shows look crappy. On the other hand, some progressive thinker critics decries the show as anachronistic, (male)chauvinistic, and siding with vested interests and older generations values, and intricately calculated to persuade the youth to acquiescently follow the old norms.
I know exactly what you mean about elevating expectations. I am watching 'About Time' right now, and that show is filled with kdrama clichés that have been tired for a while- but now feel so blatantly lazy on the writers part. Its as if I have a lower tolerance because I know they are capable of so much more.
And you raise a very interesting second point, which- to be honest- never even occurred to me while watching 'My Mister,' and I proudly call myself a Feminist. While I can see how some might interpret the male lead as condescending or patronizing, I would argue that his actions come from a place of genuine concern. Fatherly- perhaps 'mentor' is a better word- not superior. And yes, the narrative of this series is largely from an older mans perspective, but I disagree that it is purposely trying to convert young people into adhering to traditional norms. In fact, I have thought a lot about the show after uploading this video and one theme I wish I had touched on in my review is that the show, in my opinion, is trying to illustrate how different generational cohorts think themselves apart from one another, when in reality we are all connect as life's struggles are felt by all people of all ages. Remember that great scene when the gang is walking IU's character home and the old are pinning for youth while she cant wait to age? If anything, this show is trying to get people- of every stage- to be empathetic and practise understanding.
Marie Maurer I toally agree with you.. This show is about small bit of consolations between fragile indivuals. I could not get a clue of any intention of 'subservient youth to the system' undercurrent in the plot.
has that 'subservient youth to the system' interpretation of the show been a large response? I don't usually follow kdrama news so I am out-of-the-loop.
Nope.. In S.K. these days, Feminist movement is in its peak than ever before (but actually initial stage overtly outloud physical gathering happening more frequently recntly). People who criticize this show are mostly female viewers who want to bend everything into their taste and whatever society gives, they want to use that as some sort of kindling to light up the feminist movement, in my thought.
Wish you could understand subtle difference of feeling of Korean script they speak out, most of their words can be delivered by even imperfect subs thou.
I think a lot of people are finding this show on Netflix. 'My Mister' has been my favorite kdrama for years! Thanks for being here even though you can't listen to English. I hope to add Korean subtitles to my videos one day 저는 대학교에서 한국어 수업을 들어요. 일 학년이에요. 그래서 아직 한국어를 못 잘해요. 만나서 반갑습니다 :)
Just finished it, incredible show, good thing i started watching korean shows on netflix, infact its the only thing i am interested in since i started using netflix, they are too good compared to bogus western shows and i had the same feel that the show leaves you wanting more
Maybe because I am Olde, but I have a really different take on this. I really think it was so well written and acted. IU clearly is in love with him, and he is attracted to her, but his marriage keeps him from doing anything. I thought the comp guy was her brother, could be wrong. Great job.
I agree that their love is obvious, but I interpreted it as a different type of love than romantic. but it has been years now since I watched My Mister so maybe there are hints I am forgetting ....guess that means its time for a rewatch!
ㄴ"My Mister(My uncle)," I saw a lot of dramatic turning point that separates the presence of IU and Lee, Ji - Eun clearly and all actors in (Lee Sun-kyun, Lee Jia, old and new, sonsuk, Go Doo-shim, jeongukhwan, Song dawn janggiyong, Young Min Kim, Kwon countries, Wu, etc. and shining joyeonjin _Actually, it is the best Korean drama with all the main roles) shining. Personally, I affirm that Lee Ji-eun is the only singer and actor who is as great as Lee Jung-hyun of "Alice in Faithful Country". He is one of the few actors who act with his whole body. I was very difficult, but wasn't it the adversity to give birth to a masterpiece? Of course, I respect the consistent concentration of all the writers, directors, scripts, supporting actors, extras, and staff. The Old Miss Diary, and the works of Hae-young Oh's author, Hae-young Park, were a The work that PD Kim Won-suk showed the perfection of the decoration for the United States! Even the OST is the best, it's a Studio Dragon work, so you can watch it on Netflix.
People tend to feel a sense of hatred towards pitiful humans. It seems this is because it takes too much energy to feel empathetic towards someone without actually doing anything to help them. It's like they think, I should not have to feel sad for them, and it's their own fault their in this situation.
At first Im sleepy and kind depress watching because its kind not my thing but since its IU I really did watched it and its worth it..IU acting in My Mister is stand out she really did a great job and its paid off she win as best actress.
To be fair the male lead should take some responsibility for his wife having an affair. He would never open up to her, and excluded her from his day to day life, preferring to spend time with his mum and brothers, and drinking with his football friends. She felt she was living alone.
computer nerd guy is shown when IU's childhood reflecting scene. the bad guy pigtail her to home after she hit by bad guy's father. so i think they were grown together as childhood friend. sorry for poor english. 암튼 외국인이 이런걸 다 봐 주시고.. 나참.. 신기하구만.
Yup, I saw that too. I think episode 15 or 16? It showed Kwang-Il as a boy meeting Ji An as young girl and Ki Beom after they were both beaten up by Kwang-Il's dad. Kwang-Il then gave Ji An a piggyback up the stairs the same way (and shot the same way) that Dong Hoon gave Ji An's grandmother a piggy back ride. The subtle, but incredible depth and nuance between the relationships of each characters is just so impeccable in this show. My favorite kdrama and easily one of my favorite dramas of all time.
My mister is the best series that I've seen, positive power good feeling about she and him it's so great all every thing wonderful I can't move on from this series
I need help... I've made it past episode 3 but I'm really hating it... it has no likeable characters... either they're utterly lazy, evil, stupid or whatever... they're all 1 dimensional characters and the series gives me a real bad feeling, making me depressive... tell me it gets better.... tell me there will be at least 1 positive note about the characters... I need somebody to like in this series !!!
Diego R. ugh really? I try not to give anything significant away, sorry! I re-watched from 8:30-the end and couldn't pick out what u are referring to, be more specific and i might edited it out :)
Diego R. ah, ok. I'll add a warning in the video description. but My Mister is not categorized as a romance so I dont necessarily think saying "there's no romance" is a spoiler.
"People are messy." What makes you think that?!?!? I wonder. People can be horrific, absolute jerks. this is No.-2 on my all time great list. Mr. Sunshine, beats it, by a pretty good margin. Not much comes close to My Mister, though. It's got second place locked up, at least so far. Just as Sunshine has first. If you haven't seen Sunshine, do so. Anyone who has the opportunity to watch either of these two, and passes, has my sympathy. No, my pity.
Gona say something controversial. But Ji an several times confessed romantic feelings for Don Hoon. Don Hoon just is too much of a noble guy to touch her in a romantic way. AT THAT TIME IN THEIR LIVES (He's technically married, and he would not break that vow). But who here thinks he's staying with his cheating passionless Wife forever? The scene with the bar tender, they were talking about... Do I divorce my Wife after 5 years. Or do I do after 10 years. He likely will divorce in the future after his mother dies and kid is grown. And at the end it telegraphs that they will surely be apart of each other's life going forward. He's repeatedly displayed a passion for Ji an and has done multiple things way out of his comfort zone specifically for her. He was clearly soo open towards her in the last scene. It's just a matter of time before that passion gushes out.
Thanks for the great review!
this is the best drama I've seen from this year so far.
I kind of watch whatever I feel like in the moment, doesn't matter what year, but this show is the best iv seen in a long time
Have you seen the "Legend of Haolan"? It's a Chinese period drama based on history, but it's so addictive.
recommend some best ones like this

I just finished watching this show. At first I only watch this after watching IU’s Hotel Del Luna. I wanna watch more of her work. But after watching episode 1 I totally fall in love with the story. Every bits pf this drama is so great. It makes you think, reflect and feel your deepest emotion. Part of me can relate to every character. It’s painful yet healing. It kinda gives that faith to human kindness. That there are still genuinely kind people in this cruel world.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
A note. The male lead was the rich guy in 'Parasite'.
❤️
This film deserve an international recognition!👏👏👏
So sad… more people in the world need to watch this
I passed this over so many times, but after seeing IU in Hotel Del Luna, I gave it a shot and boy was I blown away.
I'm glad I accidentally clicked on this show in Netflix, the best Korean drama I watched and I watched a lot.
Take home message from this series was in final episode when Gramma told Ji An that all relationships are special and precious... And then the camera zooms slo-mo onto Sanghoon who paid for the funeral, and Donghoon for everything he's done for Ji An. Omg heart melt moment.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
My little sister summarized this drama the best IMHO. This one was the very depressing story and yet gave you the greatest healing inside.
For me I think this series is the best and number one as you
Not sure what to expect when I clicked just because I wanted to hear more about My Mister.
In korean dramas nothing can ever come close to this for me!!!! A masterpiece ❤️😭
Have you seen Mr. Sunshine yet?
I would argue that Ji An very much so was in love with the male lead. And he was admirable in keeping his distance while still understanding that they both needed each other.
This is my favorite drama of all time! Thank you for this review.
I’ve been watching a lot of korean dramas. I regret, why did I miss this Drama 😭 I’m starting watching right now
I saw all news from the time the drama was announced, who would be the leads and first script reading.
My number 1 kdrama
Promise you will not regret it...
saw this late but then the drama is really one of the best i have watched .... ever
this is the only the drama i dont want to finish..
Erica Malazado Same! I will definitely be rewatching My Mister in the future
it's my fav kdrama ever. (i'm a korean)

@@heunchae3562 haha i saw this now. i did bro haha.
Uncommon drama
that touches without a love line
Especially in Korean dramas ㅎㅎ
I just watched your review and you have so subtle and rich story telling skill and loved it. P.S: the side supporting computer nerd is one of 3 kids who grow up together including Kwang-il.. just for referance^^
Hmm 'i want everyone to watch'.... Absolutely correct!
This drama is so deep. I sense there is a Buddhist concept behind.
I did a review of the drama. But you did it so much better. Not boring at all. Hehe. Love it. And I love the drama too ♥♥♥♥♥♥
oh thank you! I do feel I rambled a bit though. Link your review, ill give it a watch ^_^
Do u know the main actress in that drama is actually top singer in korea? Her singer name is I.U. 아이유. She is like a Tayler Swift of Korea. Acting is her just second job.
I did know that! Shes so talented it's crazy!
Male lead Lee Sun Kyun was exceptional tho...
I do have quite a few complaints/nitpicks about My Mister though:
- Side characters and stories were hit and miss.
Seeing her on screen again makes me want to rewatch 'My Mister'
Thanks for sharing the tech perspective, it's an aspect of the show that I didnt pay much attention to because I'm a grandma at heart 🤷♀️😅.
Yes it's no romance but's a love story between Jian and Donghoon....if you come to analyze the story..the love is there..
It's definitely romantic love though hugely acted upon. Dong Hoon is just so straight laced and would not cross any overt romantic love expressions but definitely romantic yet very restrained. Very powerful love.
Hugely UNACTED
Man! That was an amazing series. I was re-watching some scenes even while I am playing the episode. I cried so much lol
It was amazing how so many of the great scenes were just FL on her own without any dialogues.
*Spoiler*
The scene where she stops in the street, and start bowing and saying "I am Sorry" made me cry so hard, I had to stop watching for few minutes.
I just finished it. Love My Mister...But so what if there is romance? I didn't know that can be triggering for some people.
this show transcends kdrama
I loved it. It's kind of like a darker version of Misaeng, which I also loved.
I haven't seen Misaeng, worth checking out?
same PD made it, but i don't think foreigners would understand it, cause it's related to korean work culture. I think this PD's "Signal" is more worth to checking out. It's definitely masterpiece.
I think it's definitely worth checking out. First time I got really emotional over an office show.
I'm a foreigner and apart from the work terms(which were explained through subtitles on Viki) I didn't really have a problem understanding. The drama focuses on the character's relationships between people inside and outside of the office, while also addressing their inner conflicts. Overall, it was easy for me to get into.
thanks for the suggestions. Cultural differences is partly why I like watching kdramas, so I might still give Misaeng a chance.
If you make something out of this drama, you really deserve to be called a K-drama fan.
Watch another Oh hae young written by this writer. Another well made K drama
Omg this movie my heartache 💔😭😭😭😭😭😭
Also, My Mister was added to me and my wife's top 5 Fav Kdrama's of all time. The director of My Mister also directed Misaeng and I loved that too and have watched that several times. I do plan on watching My Mister again. There was such depth in this drama and I loved that so much of the narrative gave credit to the audience to not have to spell everything out several times over as Kdramas have a tendency to do.
I didnt realize they were the same director! How deep and human the characters are and how much love and care is behind the camera really shows Misaeng and My Mister really are in a category of their own love them both, only just recently watched Misaeng -so glad I finally got around to watching it
masterpiece
100% agree
It maybe love on her side but it's more of him being respectful.
entertaining, emotional, romantic and everything else you'd expect from k-drama with good music. 10/10
I recommand you "miseang" "signal"
those drama also wellmade.
The producer is same.
I watched the first episode of Signal, as someone else also recommended it, and really enjoyed it...some great suspenseful moments. Ill get back to it eventually :)
MISEANG is the best...
Marie Maurer
The thing is I'm not a fan of Mr Sunshine's writer - I dropped her show Descendents of the Sun, and I only watched Goblin primarily for its cast (GONG YOO YASSSS)
Mr Sunshine's cast is strong so I will be checking it out once it reaches halfway, around 6 to 8 eps. (will get to do a bit of a drama marathon and less agony while waiting for new eps heh)
The cinematography looks gorgeous!
People who criticize this show are mostly female viewers who want to bend everything into their taste and whatever society gives, they want to use that as some sort of kindling to light up the feminist movement, in my thought.

i recommend My Mister to anyone who brings up Kdramas
Favourite k.drama for me - and I came to k.drama looking for fantasy stuff really

I hope to add Korean subtitles to my videos one day

Saw this video after watching the show. Incredible series about people.
Just finished it, incredible show, good thing i started watching korean shows on netflix, infact its the only thing i am interested in since i started using netflix, they are too good compared to bogus western shows and i had the same feel that the show leaves you wanting more
did you make one on Mr Sunshine?
Maybe because I am Olde, but I have a really different take on this. I really think it was so well written and acted. IU clearly is in love with him, and he is attracted to her, but his marriage keeps him from doing anything. I thought the comp guy was her brother, could be wrong. Great job.
I agree that their love is obvious, but I interpreted it as a different type of love than romantic. but it has been years now since I watched My Mister so maybe there are hints I am forgetting ....guess that means its time for a rewatch!
I just finished it today!!
The Old Miss Diary, and the works of Hae-young Oh's author, Hae-young Park, were a
The work that PD Kim Won-suk showed the perfection of the decoration for the United States! Even the OST is the best, it's a Studio Dragon work, so you can watch it on Netflix.
Love this drama too!
I'm surprised at how much I ended up loving it! I had no expectations going in, and now its one of my favorite kdramas, up there with Hello my 20's.
Deeply resonate w/ everything you said. And I'm Korean.
People tend to feel a sense of hatred towards pitiful humans.
It seems this is because it takes too much energy to feel empathetic towards someone without actually doing anything to help them.
It's like they think, I should not have to feel sad for them, and it's their own fault their in this situation.
You hit the nail on the head.
I did see it! It is profound!
At first Im sleepy and kind depress watching because its kind not my thing but since its IU I really did watched it and its worth it..IU acting in My Mister is stand out she really did a great job and its paid off she win as best actress.
Are you watching or have watched Hotel del luna?
I am currently watching it, and have a First Impression video for my thoughts so far! 💕
To be fair the male lead should take some responsibility for his wife having an affair. He would never open up to her, and excluded her from his day to day life, preferring to spend time with his mum and brothers, and drinking with his football friends. She felt she was living alone.
Does this take a few eps to get going? or if I don't like Ep1, then I won't like the rest? thx for reviewing!
I disliked episode 1 the most. I almost stopped watching it, so I'd give 'My Mister' 2 episodes before you drop it :)
Great review by the way. Loved it.
computer nerd guy is shown when IU's childhood reflecting scene. the bad guy pigtail her to home after she hit by bad guy's father. so i think they were grown together as childhood friend. sorry for poor english. 암튼 외국인이 이런걸 다 봐 주시고.. 나참.. 신기하구만.
Must have missed that scene, now I have an excuse to re-watch :P
Yup, I saw that too. I think episode 15 or 16? It showed Kwang-Il as a boy meeting Ji An as young girl and Ki Beom after they were both beaten up by Kwang-Il's dad. Kwang-Il then gave Ji An a piggyback up the stairs the same way (and shot the same way) that Dong Hoon gave Ji An's grandmother a piggy back ride. The subtle, but incredible depth and nuance between the relationships of each characters is just so impeccable in this show.
My favorite kdrama and easily one of my favorite dramas of all time.
My mister is the best series that I've seen, positive power good feeling about she and him it's so great all every thing wonderful I can't move on from this series

great review
Great review... same here five stars!
This is the best 😂
Best
IU is 뭔들..
♡♡♡♡♡♡
My only complaint is that is over too. A great introduction to the show.
It's really a journey, but one you should force yourself to go on. If your not liking it by now just drop it :) no pressure
At about ten minutes in she spoils the show. Be warned. Something you are not told by the 16the episode gets spoiled. A huge spoiler.
Diego R. ugh really? I try not to give anything significant away, sorry! I re-watched from 8:30-the end and couldn't pick out what u are referring to, be more specific and i might edited it out :)
Marie Maurer yeah the controversy at 10:46 they don't solve that till last episode. They don't tell you what happens till 16th.
Diego R.
