A quick disclaimer - A lot of these videos use information from the witcher wiki, in some cases I do read directly from the pages, I do always make sure to include my own thoughts and other information I know myself, but I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page here. Even though I use information from the wiki, I do still create the videos, with time, effort and a lot of editing! The idea behind the lore videos is to present to information to you guys in a fun and more interesting way then you guys having to get the information from pages and read it yourself. If anyone isn't okay with this I apologise, but since day one I have always said where I get the information from. Thank you for reading.

The Rats weren't "nice people")) They were bandits, murderers and robbers. Adventuring with them for some time made Ciri love to kill. But what Bonhart did was still messed up.
And yet i still think that after everything Ciri've been through during her life, she is presented too soft and kind in the game.

Actually Ciri fought against Bonhart, when she arrived at the village and was beaten by him. So right from the start he noticed her potential and knew where she had received her training.
Also Bonhart might have had the itention to buy her a sword, but the Gnome Gwihir cost a fortune Bonhart did not have. So she got it as a gift from the blacksmith with the words: Do fullfill, what must be fullfilled (or something like that). Bonhart hastily took it from her with the words: Not yet.
I kept that in mind, because it was a very tense moment.

Bonhart's death was definitely a good example of subverting expectations imo. Bonhart had been hearing about Geralt and his relationship with Ciri for a while, and he had been really itching for a fight with Geralt for the longest, he had beaten the shit out of Ciri in a duel multiple times at this point so didn't consider her a threat for real. Cut to the end of the last book in the series, the shit is going down, the raid on Vilgefortz castle is in full effect, Bonhart has just killed Cahir at first thinking he was Geralt until he dispatched him unceremoniously and quite easily, so he is dissapointed of course. He is still itching for his fight with Geralt and then Ciri gets in his way one final time and he is annoyed because she starts doing her same movesets again he had already seen and was ready to blow past her to get to Geralt, only this time her skills had improved greatly since their earlier fights and she surprises him and slits his throat in the duel... He bleeds out slowly and in shock having never got his fight with Geralt in the end as Ciri handled her own shit and slayed her own boogeyman.... It was Brilliant.

The aperance of bonhat and his extraordinary fighting skills may suggest he may be one of the first (oldest) witchers. How gray hair, pale skin and green eyes sure are remeniscent to the aperence of whitchers. That would explain his extraordinary agility, power and experiance that he gained threwout his looong life. Maeby he is the efect of first unrefined mutations, or just a mutation gone wrong. He similarly to witchers kills for money. The only distinction is he does not care who is the mark. Very interesting character, and in my mind definatelly not an ordinary human. I hope we will see him in future Witcher games or in the second sezon of the netflix series.

I was convinced Bonhart was a vampire throughout the book series.
The way he dummies The Rats like that, as well as his reputation and appearance screamed vampire to me.

    • @GreyHunter88
      @GreyHunter88 4 года назад +3

@@GnosisZX Dettlaff is in the video game, so it's hard to compare. Regis is quite powerful in the books, but he... is not invincible.
Geralt also beats Dettlaff at the height of his powers, so it's not like vampires are literally invulnerable.
When reading the books Bonhart is so over-the-top powerful and fast that it really seems like he's got to be SOMETHING. A Witcher, a mutant, a sorcerer, a vampire... anything.
The Rats are all pretty accomplished brigands, and he utterly embarrasses them in like an 8-on-1. I'm not mad or anything, but the way it was written definitely seemed like there was something worth paying attention to.
Oh well. Even as a normal dude, he was still a fun villain.

      @@dylanchristie7259 I respect that.
For me, it seemed a bit off. Geralt and the Witchers do these incredible things because of their training and mutations, but so much of the story is focused on how they give up their humanity in order to be made that way. So when you've got a normal dude who's as good or better than a Witcher in a fight, it kind of cheapens the need for Witchers in that world.
I'm overall fine with Bonhart, but I wish that his skills had been a little less over-the-top. His abilities are basically supernatural, which hurts the overall theme of the books because he didn't have to be enslaved, tortured and experimented on to get them.

@@GreyHunter88 I enjoyed reading that comment as I totally feel the same! I was paying attention when his looks were described, particularly the eyes, and nothi g hinted at him being a witcher. Spontaneous idea: perhaps he inherited these traits because he is a genetic aberration like Ciri? Or a wizard experimented on him? Probably not though. Still, the description of his battle moves read like he's supernaturally fast.

Bonhart in terms of Casting. Viggo Mortensen. He's a practised swordsman as well as a scrappy individual on set. He's playing the Anti - Aragorn and I see Bonhart as older. He's well versed in combat. He's old enough people dont take him seriously. A mirror of a sort to Geralt who has grey hair and seen as older and so therefore slower. I can see him and Cavill having a bit of a behind the scenes banter. Bonhart is experienced, but jaded. He became a bounty hunter because he's so skilled. He is that good. He has an ego, but has also intelligence. He's got plans. He knows this girl is important to Nilfgaard and Geralt. He's a pawn in fate too. He's smart enough to know it. He want's to have the ultimate test of his skill before he dies. I can see Viggo toying with a young Ciri in a fight after Ciri's love interest is unceremoniously killed. Bonhart is just an antagonist as Vilgefortz. Vilg... Stars night sky guy. On screen? Yeah Viggo. It's got this Meta fight between Aragorn and Geralt, but also plays brilliant on screen. Viggo's a... Character. That's needed for someone like Bonhart. He's faced and killed Witchers. He's bored. I can see this playing well on set with Cavill. It's a Tom Hardy to Bale situation. The fight on screen has no stuntman. It's leaving the two to really throw thier chops together. This would be riviting. I can see the two really going at it. The scene will be close handheld cams. It gets all up in there. It's Jarring and real. These two are facing off against no other opponent they've faced. Geralt is unlike a Witcher Bonhart has faced. Bonart is unlike a swordsman Geralt has faced. It's Visceral. There's teeth, eye gouging. Groin kicks. It be something people'd get behind. Bonhart is a fascinating character. In our world it needs that meta hook. It's a wrestling macthup. Lol. I'd build that up on set. Short of actually bludgeoning each other - I want to see the pair match each other. Blow for blow. It can't feel reigned in. Viggo is older, has something to proove. He is a better swordsman and in Character, he has fought everything with a blade. He is bored. Geralt is better framed, has a stake in the fight but quickly learns Bonhart is no joke. He makes feignts. He knows Geralt's moves. He'll feign a weakness on his side and Geralt spins to strike it. Bonhart swiftly parries seeing Geralt's own weaknesses to his wounds and strikes him there. The two disengage. They have laboured breaths. Bonheart grins - he's enjoying this. Geralt grins -But it's a wince of pain. They parry and dance for some time. Of course there's the story, but I'd want to see these two match up. It's a testiment to Sapkoski's writing that he subverts the reader's expectation and a character like say Regis - My favourite allegory for alcoholism and faux sense of indomitism. A deus ex machina to any other writer, Chekovs Gun to some is just casually tossed aside. No ceremony. No Gandalf on the ledge. Just played. If I was making a Geralt vs Bonhart scene. I'd do the same. Making a TV show. Bonhart Vs Geralt needs to be played up. It needs actors you squee at excitement. Viggo and Cavill? Yeah. We know Cavill will deliver. Viggo has to be opposite. I think he could. Even older. He's unhinged lol. You need that. ENERGY. That unpredictable force. You can see his side, but he's reprehensible. You know? Perhaps I'm talking nonsense. People see acknowledge his skill off the bat. It's demonstrated on screen, but there's the meta feeling - you know he's a good swordsmsn. He's Aragorn. Lol. He's older perhaps, but you take him seriously. You can see if Geralt and Bonhart clash -It'd be memorable.Geralt has him dead. Bonhart, cuts his leg. He knew he'd swirl in and make a killing blow high. Geralt's sword making a sound strikes the stone just to the side of Bonhart's head. It makes a whimpering sound. Geralt sneers in defiance. Geralt was holding back and could have decapited him. Bonhart grins and he has a dagger across Geralt's thigh. He has a killing blow The pair disengage. Geralt bleeding. Geralt resets his stance. Bleeding and in a position he cannot win. Bonhart jests. A Witcher. No gold stake in this fight? You fought as though every Kingdom has a price on my head. As though I'm a Leshy. Or some common monster. What do you fight for woodsman? Hmm? Gold? Hmm? I think it's something more. Perhaps destiny. I know no Bonhart gives a sidelong grin. Knowing he has won. He gets over confident. Ciri intervienes.

I really like Bonhart's role in the books. He is as much a character as he is a metaphor for Ciri not being able to face her fears and/or her destiny. His first appearance make him out to be one of the most terrifying villain there is and, for a long while, he remains this terrifyingly insurmountable threat.
But then, one of my favourite scene from the books: Their encounter on the ice, plays out. By that time, Ciri had escaped him once and had grown. This is the moment she is no longer afraid of him and, by extension, her destiny. This scene does a lot to deconstruct Bonhart as well. He may be a formidable swordsman, but he is just that, he is no longer a looming and inescapable presence. Ciri, ice-skating, picks his party apart on the ice and the book make a point to show how powerless Bonhart is because, no matter how good he is with a sword, he remains at the mercy of an opponent that can move faster than him on the ice. If I recall correctly, the book may also hint that, had Ciri decided not to prioritize entering the tower and escaping Niilfgard, she might have taken the time to try and kill him and could have succeeded then.
And finally, by the end of the story. Bonhart no longer was the demon we met when he killed the Rats. Of course, he certainly remained a really dangerous foe (Cahir kindly reminded us of that :C) but, by that time, it was clear he could be bested and Ciri would do just that. The fight isn't even that dramatic. Because, in the end, Bonhart wasn't a monster that needed a long and drawn-out battle to defeat. Bonhart was a human and moving just a little faster than him and slitting his throat was all it took to end him.
Also, a somewhat important note: Upon meeting Bonhart, learning of his 'supposed' killings of wichers, and seeing his collection of medallions, Yennefer isn't actually that impressed with him. Actually, she correctly points out that Bonhart could just have gotten those medaillons from long-dead witcher cropses left to rot in the wild, or he could have simply bought them from someone who did and then lied about killing witchers himself.
The actual important part is that while we do see Bonhart's skills with a sword and while we do know him to be far more skilled than most, we actually never get the confirmation of him being as skilled as a witcher. Hell, the story makes sure to kill him before he got to meet and fight Geralt so that we may never know if Bonhart was the real deal or, as Yen insinuated, a liar. I think it is up to the reader to decide if Bonhart was or wasn't more than just a very skilled swordsman.

BOOK SPOILERS. I had mixed feelings towards Bonhart in the beginning, yeah he killed the rats to begin with but to be honest I didn't really care much about them. I liked him when he gave Ciri her sword and at times he could be alright. But when he started to reveal who he was more and more, then I started to hate him. When he killed Cahir, that was the final straw for me so then I was full on like 'screw this bell sniff' and he became my most hated character in the books. I think I suffered from PTSD after reading the attack on Stryga Castle, so many amazing characters gone in the blink of an eye. Then Emhyr trolling Geralt, Ciri and Yenn like that. Feel like Cahir should have at least survived as he was such a great and deep character and probably apart from Geralt, Zoltan and Dandelion, my favourite character in the books.

That's one of the things why i dislike the Netflix version of the Witcher - they made Cahir a bloodthirsty psychopath, while in the books he was generally a positive character, who was in love in Ciri for some odd reason and ultimately joins Geralt and his crew. There was no reason to do this as there is plenty of psychopaths in this story. One is Rience and the other one, the ultimate villain is Leo Bonhart. His story is so well written that you are actually scared and fascinated by this guy. Also, we only know where he got Geralt's wolf medalion from, but i don't want to spoil it here. Read the books. If you like 'adult fantasy', i doubt you can find anything better than that. If you liked Game of Thrones, the Witcher books are going to surprise you in a very positive way.

when i saw what ciri was doing, i thought maybe the rats deserved their fate. They were still bandits despite giving to the poor, Ciri had become really fucking bloodthirsty to the point that the other rats had to stop her from making needless bloodbaths just because someone loked at her wrong. The whole gang was pretty bad, so when bonhart came in, acting all smug and giving them the choice to surrender, and effortlessly killing them despite it being a 4vs1 my jaw kind of dropped, i wasnt too shocked when he sawed ciri's friends heads off, bounty hunting and stuff.
He captured Ciri instead of killing her, so i thought he couldnt be all bad at first, just a very pragmatic antagonist, but then he kinda went overboard here and there and OMG CIRI GET OUTTA THERE! Still that ass whoopin' was a long time coming

Sheer skill. Its not impossible, considering the Crinfrid Reavers and Sir Eyck of Denesle exist.
Eyck was portrayed as some kind of jerk with his bigot tendencies amplified in the show, but in the books he was far less of a jerk and much more of a badass. He was a renowned monster slaying knight, who was extremely good at his job and did it for free. So good, in fact, that Geralt remarks that Eyck was a match for any monster, including dragons. But he also wishes that Eyck would stop because he was so good at killing monsters and he worked for free, he would put all witchers out of business.
Crinfrid Reavers are a mercenary group dedicated to hunting down dragons and draconids and they are quite good at it. They hardly wear any armour and don't know magic so their skill must be incredible. Their top tier members should be able to handle the average witcher with high difficulty. Heck, during the hunt for the golden dragon, a few of them overpowered Geralt and Yennefer and tied them up. Do note that witchers avoid attacking dragons, partly due to the danger and due to dragons being a sentient race. Reavers are quite successful at dragonslaying.
So yeah, witcher level normal magic-less humans do exist but they are extremely rare.

Leo used the medallions as a way to boost his rep. He said he killed witchers to get the medallions. But he never said how and there are no witnesses. If you think about it, even a highly skilled swordsman would have very poor odds against a witcher using the full range of abilities.

I saw Ciri’s involvement with the Rats as a rite of passage. She was desperate, lost and in need of some kind of community. Unfortunately, the Rats were there we she needed them. Mistle showed her love and compassion. Consider the impact of a noble teenager being a part of a ruthless gang in her maturity. This gave her an opposing perspective about life and what other, non-nobility were suffering through during the war. Personally, I think her inclusion in the Rats and seeing them get butchered by Bonhart was a significant milestone in her development, without which she would have been incomplete.

Bonhart ain’t that good he lost to a 16 yr old girl who’s only had two years of real training and I don’t believe he ever fought a witcher it like yen said country fairs medallions if he fought a witcher you telling me they dident use arrd ingni or quen Witcher’s are so rare so it’s extremely unlikely he ran it to three Witcher’s and even more fishing they all happen to be from a different school I smell bullshit bonhart

Dont forget bonhart is old .He fight with whole gangs much younger than he(did they play fair not use traps or dirty trics , i doubt )and he defeeat them all he is faster and stronger than them.if he was younger he can defeat witcher .Ciri win only by using terrain advantage against him .she was trained in ways hes not .no one is invicible .Witchers are not only mutatants, they exist Renegade Mages and their experiments .We dont know Bonhart past.
