I turn towards the theory that Coën is from Griffin school as Cat witchers had murderous tendencies and were overall quite unstable. Coën on the other hand is said to be really well mannered and was actually nicest and most caring towards Ciri (except for Geralt obviously).
"Coen?" "Aha?" "I'm still not fast enough-" "You're very fast." "Will I ever be as fast as you?" "I doubt it." "Hmm...And are you-? Who's the best fencer in the world?" "I've no idea." "You've never known one?" "I've known many who believed themselves to be the best." "Oh! What were they? What were their names? What could they do?" "Hold on, hold on, girl. I haven't got an answer to those questions. Is it all that important?" "Of course it's important! I'd like to know who these fencers are. And where they are." "Where they are? i know that." "Ah! So where?" "In cemeteries."
On his Gwent card, you can make out that he wears a medallion from the school of the griffin. He met Ciri because he wintered at Kaer Morhen. He probably wintered at KM because the griffin school fortress, Kaer Seren, was almost completely destroyed along with most of the members of the griffin school.
Aah, Coen... He appears for so little, yet I instantly liked him. All his interactions showed that he was a rally nice guy and a good witcher. It's impossible to know why he fought in the battle of Brena, but I like to believe that he wanted to do his part in ending the horrible war and the suffering it brought.
Another cool story they repeated from the books is when Ciri provoked a caged wyvern outside Thaneth and it escaped and attacked the people who payed to see it before she kills it and saves them, you can basically do the same thing as Geralt outside of Oxenfurt in the Witcher 3.
I loved him in the books! His impression to me was like a younger version of Geralt but still open minded and not as strong "scared from the world" as Geralt.
The only thing that bothered me about him was that we never get know what was his reason for fighting at Brenna. I mean witchers are netrual in matters of politics so I can't really see a reason for him to risk his life for kings. But a great character and a great video as always. It was a shame he died, and not even by his POV.
He joined because one time Triss Merigold was taking care of Ciri and her abilities in Kaer Morhen and they've talked about politics and war at the table. Vesemir, Eskel, Lambert and Geralt of course didn't give a fuck but Coen was moved by her story and the sacrifice of normal people and he started to believe that he can change the world.
There's actually a set of Witcher short stories: lubimyczytac.pl/ksiazka/4811730/wiedzmin-szpony-i-kly In which it's all explained, but I won't spoil it for you...
I'd like to see a game set way in the past in the Witcher world, where you can experience historical events as they unfold and create your own witcher, even so far as to pick his School from maybe four or five different options that would lead to wildly different narratives as you start off in different areas in the world and experience it from different perspectives. But who are we kidding. CDPR is too chicken to make another Witcher game for fear of not living up to Wild Hunt.
my favorite character from the books is cahir also was kinda disappointed when coen wasn't in the witcher 3 kaer morhen dream because that was before he died
I think the fact that he bears scars from disease and the way his eyes are leaves me to believe that he either chose to be a witcher in his adult life/ or was taken and mutated as an adult rather than as a child (witchers are immune to disease) also another fact that you left out in this video is that Coen is shown laughing and playing with Ciri (Witchers are meant to stripped of emotion) which could also mean his mutations didn't fully affect him as an adult. Great vid anyways Coen is such an interesting character in the short space he appears.
well I think the whole thing of them not having emotions is fibbed a little bit. It does seem that they have kinda dulled emotions but they do have them. the rest of the witchers do play and laugh with her and love her. But still a cool bit on Coen as a character I forgot that he seemed more jovial than the rest in the books
They're not stripped of emotion, but they still tend to try to hide emotions and don't show joy all that much. I think Triss accuses Geralt of stripping himself of emotions or something like that... that it's a choice and not the mutations. I think Triss does also say something about it being strange to see a witcher laugh (or something like that). She had never seen one look as happy as Coën did. I'm at work and can't check my book to verify it though.
I can confirm this as I'm in the process of reading Blood of Elves. Triss does say that Coen is the first Witcher that she has seen laughing. Everybody seems to believe that the Trial of grasses strips the Witchers of their emotions entirely, but Triss states it doesn't. Yes the knowledge of the trial and how it was done seems to have been lost entirely. Vesemir is now the only Witcher left alive who was around during the time it was performed. Since everyone else was murdered in the massacre of Kaer Morhern. I think what happens as you stated Brandon is that through their training they are taught to hide their emotions, push them to one side. So that they are able to fulfil their roles and remain neutral in all matters of politics. They clearly have moral guidelines and are supposed to have a witcher code to abide by. All of them seemed to have been taken from a young age from their parents. Therefore, the only true family they have is eachother. Geralt doesn't know what love is, he doesn't know how to truly love another person, that effects him. "Maybe you don't want to accept the fact that human emotions and feeling weren't stripped from you in the elixirs and grasses! You killed them! You killed them yourself! But don't you dare kill them in the child!"
6:10 Since it's all a dream and just like you said Geralt didn't have a bond with him he simply met him at Kaer Morhen it makes sense that Geralt in his dream would focus on the people that he cares about like Yenefer (who wasn't even there), Ciri, Vesemir, etc. and not include people that he saw but didn't really care about.
George, I have a theory for why Coën could be from the school of the Cat, the school of the Cat was made by school of the Wolf witchers who failed to mutate correctly, this could have them develop trials that kind of implement the same kinds of mutation they experienced on their candidates, thus explaining Coën's yellow-ish green, bloodshot Witcher eyes and the fact that he retained his childhood scars. Let me know what you think!
Good idea man! That is a solid theory, however the other two cat witchers you meet in the games seem to look fine, but that could just be a game thing. The theory certainly could be applied for book lore!
Well maybe Mutations effect everyone different so not all the Cats would look fucked up on the outside but instead are fucked up on the inside with their Genetics, Memories or Psychology. Like how Geralt survived an additional mutation that made him look unique and others couldn't, Seems to prove the mutations don't work the same for everyone.
It's difficult to be like Witcher 3 according to me......this game is just unbeatable.....no he according to me can take it's legacy.....great video as well!!
If I'm not mistaken Coen was in a volunteer regiment during the Battle of Brenne, also if you remember when Triss was talking to the witchers about duty and responsibilities Coen seemed to be intrigued by what she was saying.
Great video :) -I'm not sure if Coën was at Kaer Morhen for all of Ciri's training or he might have just arrived a short time before Triss did. I think Ciri had been there for about a year when Triss arrives and it's said Coën was wintering there so he might have just come for the winter (maybe with Lambert since he seems friendly with Lambert). Maybe in W3 it was a time before he arrived for the winter? The witchers are only supposed to winter there, not live there, but they seem to be there even when it's not winter... -I think it's possible that Triss' speech influenced him to act. I haven't read the Battle of Brenna part yet, but I remember hearing something about him having friends who fought beside him. I'm not sure if they were friends made in battle or friends from beforehand. If he did have friends joining the battle, it might have also been an incentive to participate. -He seemed to take a friendly, almost big brotherly role with Ciri. At least that winter he seemed to be the witcher she was closest to (other than Geralt of course).
Another aspect about Coën that stuck with me was that the book hinted numerous times about his incredible swordsmanship. Could also be that from the unmutated humans' perspective every Witcher is incredible with a sword but the fact that Ciri specifically asks him if he is the greatest swordsman while surrounded by other witchers suggests he stands out a bit in that area.
I think the fact that this channel is taking off so well shows how badly we all miss the games. I feel incredibly sad every time I finish a new play through. How amazing would it be for CDPR (who are still patching TW3) to give us some more small DLC like they’ve already done. At least we have an English translation of a novel coming out soon.
WitcherGeorge thanks man I have just finished that part of the book before that I was a team triss now triss and yen can go to hell essi is the one that should be with geralt
i hope their are a few other witchers out their. i also hope that if their are any other witcher sequels we see more witchers or more witchers are trained.
I got this from the wiki so take it for what you will. In tge Affiliation section it stated that he is from the School of the Griffon which i think the color of his eyes makes a good defense for that because it could be an alternate mutation
hey there mate ! I just found out about your channel, and it really captvated me; you make nice lore videos, not so long, not unnecesessarily fancy words at every turn just because its lore, I like your style. Since you're a witcher geek (which I personally am not just yet, I'm just a guy who really loves the game series) I'd like to ask; to which other fantasy book series would you compare Sapkowski's Witcher series? I've heard some mixed on the books, some saying they are not good at all, others saying its amazing and all that, I just wanted to know yourhonest opinion on this. Peace !
It's difficult to say, they are a translation after all, I personally enjoyed them, but their are certainly other fantasy books that I have enjoyed more so, for example lord of the rings. But just for info for the games, I'd say they are worth a look.
I'm guessing he's from the school of the Griffin and the Cat. It would make sense that he was mutated at the Griffin school, but because he didn't mutate correctly, he was forced to join the Cat, since they take all the misfits.
I know coën dies before first witcher stabbed in heart, but i would LOVE to see him in fight against wild hunt, and protect Ciri. In Books he was close with Ciri so it would be better for him to Die in wild hunt than vessemir. That would be just bigger, and vessemir being in schock would just gave up, and return to that lady that we meet in one mission. I know that could not be possible but i would love to see vessemir happy ending and first witcher that dies in his bed, khear moren become lost in history as lefted palace, and Ciri remembering coën, Geralt have chance to say his final goodbye to Griffin as well as Eskel and Lambert.
Funny thing, my parents named me Coën, and i'm a big Witcher fan so i had to watch this! Any way to find more info on him and what his tattoos mean he had on his head?
Interesting, I didn''t interpret it that way. The question where he is from I interpreted as where did he spend his early childhood. I always thought that like Lambert with about 9 years old, he was mutated as an older boy/teenager (maybe as well taken from a violent household by vesemir) and therefore his mutation went wrong and not so deeply. Therefore I thought he identifies with his homeland more and he is a wolf-witcher. But there is no background about him.
I would say that Coen isn't from the school of the cat, because most "cats" were brutal, evil and actually the main reason why witchers were hated that much and Coen showed his positive emotions more than the other witchers. Ciri liked him because he was more understanding than Geralt, Vesemir, Lambert and Eskel.
TV Tropes lists him under the Griffin School characters. I believe he is, given his manners and personality. That just goes to show the Witcher verse just isn't fair. He died in a pointless and tragic way.
You have to take up an katakan contract i think. Or ekimara. I forget. I just remember the captain gaurd was weird and fishy. And somehow you meet Lambert along the way.
If Witcher 4 isn’t a create your own character traditional RPG I bet they’re replacing Geralt with Coen, saying somehow he survived his demise at the Battle of Brenna.
There is a paradox about Coen. Readers who knows English well, think that Coen came from the Griffin school.Russian/Ukrainian Readers think that Coen came from the Cat School, but some fans of the games already know, that those guys are crazy and mad after mutations,Coen could not be crazy, when he trained Ciri, the negative characteristics did not work on his mind. I don't know how it works, but Sapkovsky did not say nothing about another schools...It's a mistake that the Griffin school in Kovir,if you will read the saga.
WitcherGeorge The Scene at the beginning of the Witcher 3:Wild Hunt ISN'T real it's all a dream/omen of Ciri and specifically just another vision of Geralt's like he had in the Witcher 2 and 1(The one where he's running in the forest after his return), Geralt even tells Vesemir it wasn't real because Yen was there even though she never was there. Coen isn't there because Geralt either doesn't care about him or because he didn't want to see/remember a dead friend.
I turn towards the theory that Coën is from Griffin school as Cat witchers had murderous tendencies and were overall quite unstable. Coën on the other hand is said to be really well mannered and was actually nicest and most caring towards Ciri (except for Geralt obviously).
And he was going to Kaer Morhenn for winter because his own school was destroyed by avalanches in Kovir. Which was the Griffin school.

Sadly non since it was just a concept art by CDPR
@WitcherGeorge I don't know if this was ever addressed but Coen was recently confirmed as a Griffin through the Gwent game
not canon
love these character vids
Thanks man
Interesting, I didn''t interpret it that way.
Woah, Lambert using quen raises questions for me now.
Aha
I dont get it.
Like your videos, good stuff
thanks man
Which armor is geralt wearing while talking to Lambertt?
griffin school armor i think
Superior Griffin armor
DexMaster881 thanks man!
The grandmaster looks much better.. also download a mod which makes it look less bulky if you want
Superior Griffin!
Coen, the first jewish Witcher
i was about to say, that ciri training flashback at the beginning of 3 was just a dream by Geralt. Really has no impact on cannon
Yeah I mentioned it was geralts dream aha
Which book was he in? I'm reading time of contempt and I don't remember him from previous parts
The first book he appears in is blood of elves
This is a little sad 😟
Poor Coen
He’s a Da-Daë 😌✨
The pictures of him are intriguing, where are they from?
rinozvizdic.deviantart.com/art/Witcher-3-fan-art-rendered-in-Vray-620343546
That guy sent them!
The sword from Coen is the silver sword from The Witcher 1
hey George , make a video over berengar ?
Good idea!
WitcherGeorge, did you kill Jad Karadin or did you let him live?
So Netflix chose to kill Eskel but keep this guy who's pretty much a nobody.
Shame on Netflix.
TV Tropes lists him under the Griffin School characters. I believe he is, given his manners and personality. That just goes to show the Witcher verse just isn't fair.
He died in a pointless and tragic way.
What mission is playing in the background?!
How did you start that Lambert mission?
You have to take up an katakan contract i think. Or ekimara. I forget. I just remember the captain gaurd was weird and fishy. And somehow you meet Lambert along the way.
also coen was a witcher that actually showed some emotions like smiling and laughing.
Yup!
Personally, I think he looks pretty badass.
He looks awesome!
If Witcher 4 isn’t a create your own character traditional RPG I bet they’re replacing Geralt with Coen, saying somehow he survived his demise at the Battle of Brenna.
If read most books but still don't know who he is. Well I know his name of course.
He's very lightly touched on
thats fucking pewdiepie
*clap* *clap* *meme...*
Thought that was a black haired Ragnar Lothbrok mod for a second.
Might take a pic of Coën to a personal trainer and demand to be trained in his physique
Stream earlier please I want to watch you but when you stream it’s 2am for me :(
I'll try!
According to Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, Coën is from the school of Griffin Witcher.
I'm in the 3rd book right now and i *just* saw this witcher and this video shows up
Hmm
Coincidence? I think not.
The battle of Brenna was the one where Ted famously kicked the bishop in the arse
I wonder if you'll do another video now that CDPR dropped new witchers in GWENT and basically confirmed that they believe Coën is a Griffin.
Where coen get mentioned in the books?
RPG Dude blood of elves
They did my BOY DIRTY WITH HIM NOT IN THE WITCHER 3 OPENING FLASHBACK
Is it just me or does Coen look like Jorge Masvidal?
If I were to be a witcher I would choose coën...he seems just as interesting as Geralt
He's awesome!
Which book is he in ???
Blood of elves is the first book he appears in!
WitcherGeorge
The Scene at the beginning of the Witcher 3:Wild Hunt ISN'T real it's all a dream/omen of Ciri and specifically just another vision of Geralt's like he had in the Witcher 2 and 1(The one where he's running in the forest after his return), Geralt even tells Vesemir it wasn't real because Yen was there even though she never was there. Coen isn't there because Geralt either doesn't care about him or because he didn't want to see/remember a dead friend.
I think it's more likely that cdprojektred thought it was pointless to put time and money into a character that wouldn't be anywhere else in the game.
Thanks for the reply, But they did make Berengar for Assassins of Kings for just one scene...The Running from/to Kaer Morhen Dream scene.
