    It's worth mentioning that Vilgefortz whooped Geralt's ass so handily that he never recovered from his wounds and they brought him great pain for the rest of his life (which is referenced in the first game). From Vilgefortz's introduction and the way he questions Geralt about his past, combined with how he was able to move fast enough to match a witcher in melee combat, I always got the impression that he's a secret Witcher from another school. He seems to be very adamant that nothing actually stopped Geralt himself from becoming a sorcerer despite Geralt preferring the Witcher's life, persisting that his blood was the blood of a very powerful sorcerer as he knew Geralt's mother was a sorceress. It was almost as if Vilgefortz was talking from experience, having at some point uncovered his own parentage and their magical power. And the way he describes his life with being abandoned by his parents and adopted by a supernatural order always made me wonder. It felt like he was telling part of the truth. He said he lived for a long time as a hired sword, and it seemed to me like what really happened is he was taken in by the witchers, became one, ended up with the druids later and was then taken in by a sorcerer, abandoning the Witcher's Path. It would not be particularly hard for a master sorcerer of sorts to disguise Vilgefortz's mutations and change the way his eyes look.

    I had these theory when I read witcher the first time that Geralt and Vilgefortz maybe brothers. Of I remember correctly they both are sons of some sorceress which is really rare for sorceress to have a child, Geralt is himself around 100 and we know that Vilgefortz is somewhere there as well. I read books quite some time ago so probably there are some informations in books that would prove me totally wrong but I always liked the idea that two most powerful humans are related somehow.

  • @danielkozak1448
    @danielkozak1448 5 лет назад +12

    Its so strange that people love Geralt so much they seek conditions for others, so Geralt would seem the best. This comment section is full of it. Get a grip, people. Main protagonist must not be the strongest, or fastest. But he usually is the one standing in the end. Vilgefortz was much stronger than Geralt. Had his spells and he was able to defeat him even in hand to hand combat - was skilled fighter AND he used magic to gain speed, so he had inhuman reflexes and dexterity. Well, he is the sorcerer … duh. What do you expect?
    Second thing, there is no comparison whatsoever between mages in witcher universe. Noone can tell who is stronger. But here are some facts. Even his fellow mages (Yennefer) describe him as „incredibly talented“ - and Yen was probably one of stronger mages around (was part of their council at the time). And he was master in elven casting - casting spells without vocal formula. He only used gestures. Even other council members as Artaud Terranova or Tissaia de Vries werent able to do that (although I am not sure about Tissaia, dont have the book with me here). If I were to choose top tier mages, it would be Hen Gedymdeith, Tissaia de Wries, Vilgefortz and maybe, just maybe Francesca Findabair. But there is no way to choose between them, who was more powerfull. Its up to each one of you.

    • @TheAwesomoe
      @TheAwesomoe 5 лет назад +5

      I‘ve also noticed the thing about Geralt. It‘s immature, that‘s all it is. He‘s the protagonist and a power fantasy, and some people can‘t handle him not being the coolest, suavest, most important character in the universe. The most annoying thing I came upon was a comment section about the last example I just gave, it was in regards to when Ciri said „this is my story, not yours“. Some people were aware enough to recognize that Ciri was the real person of interest, the one who would be remembered, the archetypical hero, others could not get it through their heads. Geralt never wanted those things, he has some impressive feats, but his main career involved hunting down local monsters in swamps or what have you. Anyone who wasn‘t deluding themself would quickly see this, yet people are so frail when it comes to their fantasies and emotions of control and respect.

    • @tiel604
      @tiel604 4 года назад +3

      Tissaia could indeed cast spells by gestures only - even immensely powerful ones, like the one that lifted the anti-magic aura in Garstang. In terms of power she was probably on par with Vilgefortz, along with Sheala (Sile) de Tansarville and Philippa Eilhart (Hen G. seems to be too old to keep up with them anymore, agreed that maybe Francesca could have been in the club as well). What I wonder, though, is how would Avallach's power look like compared to them.

    To answer the very interesting question at the end of the (As always) great vid, yes, I think there very well could. Especially if any mage does learn how to harness the elder blood, captures Ciri, and is sick enough to harvest said elder blood from the young woman. Of course the chances of that are astronomical, being that Ciri either ends up as the Empress of Nilfgaard with whole armies at her command, or a witcher on the path which is sure to hone her already extremely formidable fighting skills to a razor's edge of perfection. Plus, if she's sad or pissed enough, she can let out that Ciri Scream Of Ultimate Death (Patent pending) I think it's far more likely that someone would just be born with that kind of power, like Vilgefortz.

    Listening to Witcher Lore is confusing sometimes. I really enjoy the Witcher universe, but characters like Vilgefortz leave me mystified. On one hand, he is proclaimed as the most powerful Sorcerer (of his time at least). Then you have him easily defeating a High Vampire (Regis). Yet, at least in Witcher 3 Blood and Wine, its made quite clear that High Vampires are supremely above the power of any Human. Sorcerer(ess) or not. Regis and Detlaff take on an entire compound of humans without so much as batting an eyelash. Their speed alone would win them a fight against a Sorcerer as well. Also, Vilgefortz supposedly beating Geralt with little more than a measly quarterstaff, yet Geralt being called 'The Greatest Swordsman in the North'.
    So, either CDPR made High Vampires OP as F***, Sapkowski made Vilgefortz OP, or a combination of both. Either way, I am inclined to really really dislike Vilgefortz. He is a poorly crafted villain.

    • @WitcherGeorge
      @WitcherGeorge  6 лет назад +4

      DarkAshenfall I guess the entire point of Vilgefortz is that he is just an extremely gifted sorcerer, perhaps he used magic to enhance his fighting abilities, hence why he could beat a higher vampire?

    • @DarkAshenfall
      @DarkAshenfall 6 лет назад +1

      I suppose its possible, but I am under the impression that he didn't use magic. He seems like the opposite of a protagonist Gary Stu. He is the antagonist the author needed to do anything required for the plot. I don't know enough yet, but from what I've gathered, its not looking good for Vilgefortz.

    • @dylangraham5033
      @dylangraham5033 6 лет назад +2

      It's not really implied that higher vampires are stronger than sorcerers. A few talented magic wielders could probably defeat a higher vampire. Add onto the fact that Vilgefortz was considered to be the strongest magic wielder in the lore and it's not that surprising he could beat regis, who was also not the best vampire when it came to fighting compared to another like detlaff. Imo though, I think that a higher vampire like Detlaff could beat Vilgefortz with a little luck, and someone like the Unseen Elder would probably kill Vilgefortz before he could react. It's not really that Vilgefortz was op it was that Regis was sort of a pacifist (although not entirely he destroyed a compound of humans lol).

      Just reading off of his Wiki page and providing other summaries do not give Vilgefortz justice. When you read the books you will have a much better understanding of who he is and what he was and what he can do. Vilgefortz basically played everyone while using magic to amplify himself to almost beastial strength and speed. Also the way things were summarized left out a lot of the little details and just showed outcomes of what happened instead of what actually happened. If you were to summarize Geralts story, it would turn put pretty similar to this one.

    • @zupremo9141
      @zupremo9141 6 лет назад +2

      actually if he didnt made himself faster before the duel there is no way that he can defeat geralt, because mages in the witcher world needs time and focus to cast magic. that's why most mages was caught and killed in thanned by normal soldiers and elves, because they are weak in close encounters. even yennefer was caught by a normal soldier on that same event in the book.

    • @the_dropbear4392
      @the_dropbear4392 6 лет назад +9

      Zupremo the reason why mages died to normal soilders on thanned is because they were suprise attacked, and were also fighting other mages, and were outnumbered.
      Normally a Witcher would stand no chance against a mage, it doesn't take much concentration to throw a fireball or lightning.
      vilgefortz fought Geralt and easily beat him with a staff because he could, he doesn't need to use more powerful magic.
      Tissaia singlehandedly drove of the loyalist attackers on the island, crushing them beneath wall she exploded, incinerating them ect.
