    Being exceptionally good at 2D didn't do much for the Saturn's international sales back in the day, but it certainly helped it age much better than its contemporaries.

      Yes it was. And It actually could handle 3D better if the developers took the time at mastering the hardware. Pretty sure you've seen the shenmue build for the Saturn so you know what I'm talking about.

    Holy cow. I think Joe has the same weird mental hang-up that I do wth optical media. When he put Silhouette Mirage in the Saturn, he adjusted the disc so the label would be straight before starting the game. I have always done that. I was even mocked and ridiculed once as a child, by all the townspeople.

    • @GameSack
      @GameSack  8 лет назад +48

      I also do this when I put games back in their cases as well.

      +Game Sack
      It's nice to know I'm not alone in the world, good sir. Question: Are you also really particular about the way your Genesis games are set in their cases? Because I am, and I am NOT ASHAMED.

    • @GameSack
      @GameSack  8 лет назад +4

      +Dave Bladegun I put the carts in so that the bottom of the cart is facing the spine of the box. Same with SMS games and all that. Only Neo Geo games do I do it backwards because the cases are designed to have the bottom of those carts face outward.

    • @davebladegun3009
      @davebladegun3009 8 лет назад +3

      +Game Sack
      Well then we must be long-lost OCD brothers because I do it the exact same way, both for Genesis and SMS games.

    I really don't know what the fascination was with 3D back in the mid-90's. I got sucked into it myself, but I look back at it now and think, there was SO much great 2D stuff for the Playstation and Saturn, that got overshadowed by a lot of the 3D, which looks like crap now, for the most part. Hindsight is 20/20, I suppose. At the risk of sounding like a Sega fanboy, 3D didn't start to really look good until the Dreamcast came along.

    • @MrDerOutsider
      @MrDerOutsider 8 лет назад +4

      +Douglas Booth ps1 maybe looks bad now but when it was new it was very impressive and there were many great 3D Games that still play good today if you dont care for the graphics.

    • @Booth81
      @Booth81 8 лет назад +3

      +MrDerOutsider That's very true. I still enjoy the Resident Evil games, Silent Hill, Tekken 1-3, Colony Wars, and Metal Gear Solid on the PS1. But, there was also a lot of garbage out there too, which outsold all the good 2D games, simply because they were 3D. Not many remember this, but Castlevania: SOTN, was actually a bit of a sales disappointment (at least in the US), and the sentiment was because, at the time, people wanted 3D games.

    • @MrDerOutsider
      @MrDerOutsider 8 лет назад +3

      Douglas Booth well its kinda understandable i mean as a gamer in the mid 90s what would you rather play: a 2D snes game but with nicer graphics and CD soundtrack (the same thing you played your whole frickin life) or some hot new 3D graphics game? the answer is easy. and its not like anyone would buy a full price 2D Game these days either (well exept mario)

    • @Booth81
      @Booth81 8 лет назад +1

      +MrDerOutsider When you put it that way, it does make more sense in why 3D took off the way it did in this era, especially before the internet blew up like it did in the early 2000's. I'm just glad that nowadays, you have a lot of good 2D stuff to choose from, coming out of the indie scene, mixed in with the AAA titles that come in and out of gamestop. It's part of the reason why I think games will eventually go into a "New Hollywood" type of era within the next decade, like film did in the 70's.

    • @Armageddon-yt3so
      @Armageddon-yt3so 8 лет назад +2

      +Douglas Booth it's a shame CastleVania SOTN didn't do better because it's an amazing game. i also enjoyed Resident Evil 1-3, Silent Hill, and Metal Gear Solid.

    With such amazing 2D graphical capabilities I just wonder why did they have to focus so much on 3D on the 5th generation...
    These 2D games have aged and look SO MUCH BETTER!
    Too bad the N64's 2D capabilities were pretty crap... Look at it now, it has aged pretty poorly... Oh well, at least some of its games still play nice...

    I miss these days when you could buy a sprite based game in a game store and it was an amazing experience. Developers put actual care into their products and they packed it with as much content as humanly possible without demanding more money. When you bought a new game it was complete and didn't require another purchase to play everything. Greed has decimated the industry and unfortunately, we have all played into it....including myself.

    And I honestly don't have a problem with the voice acting in Mega Man 8 either (same for Mega Man X4) since Mega Man 8 is my favorite out of the classic series.
    But if you were to cover more 2D 32-Bit games, maybe cover Mega Man X4 or 5 or 6, and have you guys even talked about the original Rayman before? (Because I can't recall as far as I can tell)

      Really, it's Rock himself, Light, and Duo who are the worst offenders. And Aqua Man.
      Rock sounds like a tiny squeaky baby, as does Aqua Man, Light sounds like Canada's 5th-best Elmer Fudd impersonator, and Duo has no volume control, so in the FMV cutscenes he's real quiet, whereas in gameplay he's LOUD AS SHITBALLS.

    When I think 2D 32-bit games, The Raiden Project, the Street Fighter games (sans EX+), and several of the early games in the PlayStation's library come to mind. Not that 3D wasn't a step forward, but is was a bit jarring at times for those coming over from SNES and Genesis. I do wonder about the rumors/stories regarding Sony's dislike/disapproval of 2D games for the PlayStation, and if that might have limited the 2D games that we could have/should have seen.
    Maybe Bubsy would've been better off staying 2D.
    Thanks so very much to you for providing lots of entertainment (and for continued opportunities to learn new things) over this past year. 2015 was better because your content made me laugh, taught me things I didn't know previously, and persuaded me to seek out a few games that I had previously overlooked. I always liked the first legacy of kain way more than the others because of the way it looked and the atmosphere. It seems much darker and more realistic than the sequels.

    In regards to Blood Omen's loading times, play it on a PS2 or the download on PSP/PS3 and enable the faster disc-read speed, it significantly lessens the loading problem.

    _Vae Victus_ !! That, and the insane laugh he does sometimes as he swings his weapons.... oh, and the description of the Implosion spell and the way he tells it, dude, the guy sounds like he was thoroughly enjoying himself when he did the voices for that game.

      +siIvermate I see what you mean, still things like the G-police and Colony Wars games, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, MDK, Dino Crisis, Resident Evil etc. came out really nice and were only possible in 3D. More 2D games would have been welcome though.

      ***** The majority of gamers call it a PS1 nowadays. Some gamers are stuck in the past and still use that stupid "PSX" name, but most call it a PS1

    I guess just because they came out around the same time as the N64, & featured 3d games, I just always assumed the PS1 & Saturn were 64 bit consoles. I thought the 32 bit gen only consisted of 32X, 3DO, NeoGeo, & maybe CD-i.

    Always assumed PS1 & Saturn were 64 bit since they came out around the same time as the Jaguar and N64. I always just thought of the 32 bit generation as a short lived after thought with just the 32X & 3DO.

    The best part of Dr. Light in MM8, is there is one point where he says "we must get the energy crystals immediately Mega Man" but you can hear him start to say "Rock Man" and then pause and say Mega Man.

    Always loved it in Mega Man 8 when Dr. Light was talking about Dr. Wawi. Wily? Nope, it's Wawi! Also, you should have talked about the creepiness of Clown Man. "See you in my dreams" and him grabbing you from underground....AND HE'S A CLOWN!

    I'm all about the 2D on 32-bit. There was some fantastic and highly detailed artwork! I also feel like the 2D aged much better than 3D from that era. I actually got a region modded PS1 specifically for it. A few games I recommend are:
    1 - Gunners Heaven
    2 - Castlevania SOTN
    3 - Adventures of Lomax in Lemmingland (Some of the best sprite work...ever...).
    4 - R-Types
    5 - Harmful Park (Really awesome sprites in this one but extremely expensive$$$).
    6 - Parodius: Forever With Me
    7 - Sexy Parodius
    8 - Bomberman Party Edition
    I got some of these games from Solaris Japan where you can buy the XRGB mini. They were in mint condition. I recommend them! Good prices.

    Great topic for an episode! I always look out for those "hidden" 32-bit 2D games since they're a tiny minority in 2 huge libraries (and I'm talking about the Japanese Saturn which has over a 1000 games). "In the Hunt" is a great 2D shooter for both systems, maybe you could cover it in part 2?
    Thank you for another great year, I've been here since the early days of this channel and was never let down. Production/quality/information/entertainment is just top notch. Happy Holidays Joe and Dave and keep up the great work!

    Well 2D games on 32 bit systems. Panzer Bandit, Lomax, Castlevania Chronicles, Nekketsu Oyako(pretty cool 2D beat'em up), plethora of 2D fighting games. For Sega Saturn: Golden Axe the Duel, Legend of the Oasis, Albert Odyssey.

    Elevator Action Returns had one hell of a soundtrack - incredible compositions, amazingly arranged. Much like Rolling Thunder 2 actually (especially the Arcade version) - another underrated 2D co-op spy thriller.
