      I’m not sure I’d ever want the OKW. It has almost no spill, but def more candela than the others. I guess that would work if you’re trying to PID at ONLY 100 yards away. I chose the PLHv2, for my pistol but wish i would have waited for the PLH5K :/
      For my AR-15, I’m still looking at the Cloud Defensive OWL. But time will tell

    PLH5K perfect for a pistol light (PL350). OKW and PLHV2 perfect on rifles. I've only owned the PLHV2 and PLH5K until now so I'm excited to try out the OKW. I tested all 3 in my backyard last night but heavy mist/fog washed them all out, could hardly tell the difference in any of them which is crazy considering how different they are. Light performance impacted by weather conditions is a super important factor to consider as well.

    This is it. I love that someone is doing this with weapon lights. There used to be a couple blogs that did testing of this quality with handhelds a few years ago, but even that stuff has disappeared for the most part. I especially like the candela at angle charts. Very useful in quantifying beam profile. Another test that I've done myself on a few lights which you might consider is repeat startup output testing to see how well the light returns to full output after it has been run to its step-down. This is a "realistic" output test since lights are cycled on and off during real use. Most lights perform well in returning to full output, but I haven't seen much data on these newer lights that have very high outputs. Thanks for doing all of this work!

    • @WerkzHolsters
      @WerkzHolsters  2 года назад

      That's an excellent suggestion. I'll see if we can integrate. TBH, there are so many lights, that simply getting decent lumen and candela data on all lights is tough enough. If I can figure out how to standardize something like this, then probably we can integrate. Great feedback!

    • @coffeeandlifting
      @coffeeandlifting 2 года назад +1

      The way I used to do the test on my own lights (to satisfy my own curiosity) is to run them to the first programmed step-down and then power off for a determined amount of time before repeating. The output charts generated might only be 1-2 minutes each, but you can take a higher sample rate of output during the shorter duration to get a detailed view of that first couple minutes of the runtime in which you will spend most of your time in during real use. Total runtime at full power will be much lower and would also be an interesting data point. But again, the content you're already producing is above and beyond anything else available on this topic and I'm subbed.

    Great comparisons. I do disagree somewhat with all these high candela lights for close up work. They are great for outdoors at distance. Go to 7:03 . Now imagine a scenario where you enter the room and there are 3 purps each about 8 ft from each other and you flash your light on the guy in the middle. Would you rather have the surefire or the modlite? With the Modlite you cant even see 8 ft from him. With the Surefire the whole area is lit up. Lumens is the LED or light source and candela is the reflector. If you want to see how many pimples the guy in the 7ft wide beam has then you want go for the high candela focused beam. If you want to see that he is a guy with a gun and he has a couple friends to his side 9-10ft then a wide , lower candela but same lumen beam is better i think.

    • @WerkzHolsters
      @WerkzHolsters  2 года назад +1

      I agree that when outside, and there is nothing to reflect off of, many of the highly focused lights don't provide enough spill for such a scenario. Indoors has the benefit of walls / ceiling / floor to bounce off of. Like all things, lights have tradeoffs, and everyone has a different set of concerns.

    I think the OKW is too focused for short to midrange engagements. It seems that you either are able to disorient the subject or see what he’s doing with his hands but not both at the same time at those distances. I think the PLHV2 is a decent compromise and will go with that for everything but my rifle. That will get an OKW.

      I think all the light manufacturers are having trouble meeting candela claims. What may be more important is to get a data using the same test rig (mine) for comparison purposes. Most people cannot tell the difference between 54,000cd and 30,000cd without lab equipment. And that may be why we see so many lights falling short of claims -- no one is out there to dispute the ratings.
