I understand this was seven years ago. I watched it today. Just made my first pillow this way. Thank you so much you give great instructions. Thank you thank you thank you!
I wanted to let you know that I watched your video; followed every step, and made two envelope pillow covers. Thanks for very easy to follow instructions.
Thanks! My eight year old niece got a kid’s sewing machine for Christmas and I’ve been looking for ideas to get her started. I needed something with just some straight lines, and that didn’t take too long to get her first 🎉🎉🎉COMPLETE🎉🎉 piece of work before we get into anything more in-depth. This the perfect project to build her confidence and skills. Just a heads up for anyone teaching an eight year old to sew, don’t spend lots on a machine unless you’re sure the confidence is there… I only spent about $40 for this machine, and it’s the most basic one I could find. It only goes forward (sigh), I can’t change presser feet, stitch width or even cut the thread with the little knife cutter thing… BUT it has a finger-guard, high/low speeds, and a regular but teensy foot pedal or press button start/stop. It seems like fear was her biggest roadblock. Once she saw I literally couldn’t get my finger under there no matter how hard I tried, she’s really started to fly!!
Im way late to the game but this is a fantastic tutorial! I was searching for a way to make my extra quilt blocks into pillows and this is perfect! Thanks so much!
I know this video is from a few years ago now but it has to be one of the best tutorials I have seen on how to make and envelope pillow - your instructions are so clear and easy to follow, thank you.
Compared to the other videos I’ve watched, this is by far THE BEST because it is concise, gives excellent instructions and speaks to all who want to learn, irregardless of your level of expertise. The majority of other videos are by seamstresses who “talk over your head” or go too fast, expecting us to figure out the rest!!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It was very clear and most helpful. I.m going to get started now and hopefully make some cushion covers as lovely as yours for my new sofa
Hi! Wait a second, what is that clever thing with markings when you iron? Did you mark your ironing board cover by hand? Is it a mat for a table? I must know please! Hahaha thanks in advance!
Thank you Jann for this very easy tutorial. I was able to make 2 throw pillows in under an hour to match curtains in a spare bedroom. So easy, measurements turned out perfect.
These tutorials are so clear and straightforward. I am overjoyed to have made 2 lovely cushion covers and I am a novice. Eager to try more now! Thank you 🙂
Hi Jann, I really really enjoyed this. Not sure if I enjoyed the ease of making it or your detailed instructions. I look forward to trying this particular make. I noticed you haven't posted in some months, I hope you continue your posts. Thank you so much. Have a great day!
Thank you. Very clear instruction. When the pattern has directional design, how do we make sure we cut it (measurements of each piece so we cut them efficiently) so they align properly?
If you want the pattern on the back pieces to line up correctly, you'll have to play around and do some figuring. You won't be able to cut them out efficiently. There WILL be some fabric waste. That's just the nature of the beast. Thanks for watching!.
Thanks for tutorial on the pillow covers. Loved the exact instructions. Just finished my first pillow. Even if though I had to take it apart once b/c fabric was facing the wrong way!!! Will continue to look at your site for other DYI projects.
Just what I needed!! Got my fabric, pillow forms, but wasn't sure how much of an overlap. And thanks for the "purple thing" tooltip. I usually use a table knife. LOL I'm making last-minute plaid pillow covers for Christmas and it's the 16th! Easier than a zipper and it's just for a short time, too, so this is perfect!! Thanks, Jann!!
Instead of buying the “purple thing”, I’m going to continue getting my corners sharp by using a tip I learned…using the handle end of a wooden spoon. No more worries about puncturing the stitching in the corners!!!
Thanks for such an easy tutorial, I have made a few pillows now and they have all turned out great, and I have only been sewing for about a year now and found these easy to make ☺️
Just came across your tutorial and you explain so well. Looking for a round (long) sofa pillow pattern if you have I would appreciate it so much. Thank you!
I do have a long round bolster style pillow in my Craftsy class - Custom Bedding: Decorative Shams & Bolsters. Here's the link for it on their site - www.craftsy.com/class/custom-bedding-decorative-shams-bolsters/ If link doesn't work, you can copy and paste. It's a bedding pillows class, but you can always use the bolster pillow for your sofa. Let me know if this isn't what you had in mind. Thanks for watching!
Hi, just discovered you, and I do love your tutorial. I have a question, How did you decide the 6 inches for the over-lap. I have a baby pillow 15 x 10 what measurement will be the best size? To have a easy pull out pillow opening.
Thanks so much for this great video, especially for including the formula for cutting the back pieces. That was so helpful! I have a question about the seam allowance. I know you used a 1/2" seam allowance. However, I pieced & quilted my top piece using 1/4" seam allowance. I was always told to be consistent with the seam allowance in a project. But I can see the reasoning for the 1/2" seam allowance around the edges of the pillow as far as for durability in use. Do you think it will be okay for me to use the 1/2" SA?
Hi Jann, I was wondering if you could explain why you would cut 18" x 18" for the front cover if the pillow is 18" x 18"? Wouldn't you want to cut closer to 19" x 19" or 20" x 20" to allow for the seams?
I like the same fabrics on both sides of the pillow cover. But, if you want a different fabric on the back side, that’s ok. Personal preference. 😀 Thanks for watching!
I have been watching several of your tutorials and wonder if you could tell me the model of your Brother sewing machine? Would LOVE to get the same machine. I own several Brother machines but haven’t seen the one you use. Your videos are clear and concise and I have picked up some good tips from you. Thanks in advance for the info on the machine.
I'm so glad that you've enjoyed my videos! My Brother sewing machine is an industrial sewing machine that was made probably 40 or 50 years ago. It's a workhorse, and I bought it used 18 years ago when I started my drapery business.
I explain in more detail in this video - ruclips.net/video/e5Rwsa9H-Xw/видео.html. Bottom line - I like my pillow covers to be slightly snug on the pillow form. So, I don't add seam allowances when I figure my fabric cuts. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the quick reply. I am still a bit confused about the pattern: If the pillow insert is 18” and you cut your fabric to 18” x 2..36” wouldn’t the pillow slip be smaller using a 1/2” seam than the pillow insert or is the pillow cover supposed to be a bit tighter than the insert? Thank you for any assistance
Yes, correct, the pillow cover is a bit smaller than the form. I find that if I don't do this, that the pillow cover can be looser than I like. Thanks for watching!
You would follow my instructions. 16" would be the width (same size as your pillow form). To figure the length - 16" (size of your pillow) + 6" = 22" divided by 2 = 11". So you will cut 2 back pieces at 16" by 11".
@@annatrusty6137 I was wondering that too. I think if you're going to make an envelope pillow cover you are probably a beginner; well you might not be...but I am! So information like that is so important. I will only follow someone's tutorial if they have considered the nervous beginner ( unless it's haute couture etc. ) I really look for clarity in terms of seam allowances included....suitable weight of fabric...needle size...etc. Nothing against the uploader, who seems very nice, it's just that this type of thing is frustrating.
Love that print. It's pretty!❤ I've never made one of these covers but I'm certainly inspired.😊 I must admit, for some crazy reason my usually good math brain got boggled when you were telling how to calculate the dimensions for the 2 back pieces. I don't know if a 3-inch overlap is standard to all larger pillow covers but, for me, it was easier to think of cutting the half sections with a 3-inch overlap of one another. So easier (for me) calculations to determine the dimensions for each of the 2 back pieces would be this: Pillow length ÷ 2 + overlap allowance = length of each back piece (in this instance... 18" length ÷ 2 = 9" + 3" overlap = 12" length for EACH of the 2 back pieces). Is a 3-inch overlap standard for larger pillow covers? In this instance 3" is ⅙ of the length so would you use that ⅙ formula to calculate the overlap in other pillow cover sizes? For simplicity sake, would a 6-inch cover have a 1-inch overlap? Or is it a personal preference or some other guideline to determine how much overlap you need? Sorry to bombard you with these questions that probably seems silly but I didn't understand how you were calculating the measurements which also made me wonder about different cover sizes. Thanks so much for your expert advice.❤ Have a blessed day!🙂
You could make a larger overlap for a larger pillow size. It really comes down to personal preference. However works best for you to figure the overlap is fine.
Great advice for everyone, whether you’re a quilter or an experienced seamstress or learning how to make envelope pillow covers by watching this excellent video!!!
Glenda, the yardage depends on the pillow size, fabric width and fabric pattern. I probably bought 3/4 yards for this pillow. (It's been a few years.) . Thanks for watching!

Great tutorial - about to start but have a quick question. For the hem you mentioned 1/4" but when sewing the sides together was that 1/4" or 1/2"?

The seam allowance is 1/2". Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much!
You're welcome!
Question? If the fabric is same size of the foam pillow, how do you account for seam allowance?
I explain in more detail in this video - ruclips.net/video/e5Rwsa9H-Xw/видео.html. Bottom line - I like my pillow covers to be slightly snug on the pillow form. So, I don't add seam allowances when I figure my fabric cuts. Thanks for watching!

Yes you can!
Hi and thank you very much for the great tutorial. 😎
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
So if my pillow is 16” should I add 4” or 6” for the back pieces?
You would follow my instructions. 16" would be the width (same size as your pillow form). To figure the length - 16" (size of your pillow) + 6" = 22" divided by 2 = 11". So you will cut 2 back pieces at 16" by 11".
For the back piece, do we always add the 6inch difference regardless of the pillow in (i.e 16")
Yes.
