One question I have is , will using the red light mask on skin of color cause hyperpigmenttaion?- Also, one other question, do you think using a BHA/AHA with Calecim will blunt the effects of the growth factors?
Thank you!! Growth factors are usually not affected by exfoliating acids so you can use them anytime. Re LED: not necessarily but there are some instances where LED may aggravate melasma in deeper skin tones. Probably best to avoid as it is not vital especially if you have a proper skincare routine. 🌷💛

I just purchased the Beauty of Joseon Sun Relief sunscreen and I’m excited to try it. I have religiously used sunscreen for the past 35 years, mainly high percentage zinc oxide which my dermatologist recommended due to some skin issues I was having. It’s so hard though to find one that doesn’t leave a white cast but I just kind of got used to it and figured it was a trade off for me. I’m hoping I like the Beauty of Joseon because I’ve heard a lot of good things about it.
I really like the under eye growth factor serum by Zo. I’ve repurchased a few times. Their other products are decent but I never repurchased any of them. 🌷💛
Desi - thank you tons for the video !!! I have not used any retinol/tretinoin before. 95% of my products are BR. I do have pigmentation on my face though. I can easily get prescription for Niacinamide 4% from the doctor. Do I need to use the Niacinamide together with the Retinoid at night? Or just one at a time.
I'm curious if you have tried the Auteur Definitive Renewal Serum yet. I am curious about Auteur based on your previous videos but not sure yet which product I want to try first
Thank you for this video, really helpful! It made me think, that my Vitamin C serum could also be the cause of my dark spots that I have trouble getting rid of. One question: How do you feel about the Ordinary‘s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum? (It is a quite inexpensive product)
Thank you!!! I find that with The Ordinary is “you get what you pay for”. Low grade quality ingredients that do not accomplish much. Maelove and Timeless are much better affordable brands. 💛🌷
hiiii i noticed for the dark spot serum by remedy you suggested, as well as the peptide quad serum from maelove you reccomended, both contain dimethicones in their ingredients. do you think its cuts down product's efficacy considering its a filler ingredient?
Dimethicones do not interfere with any other ingredients. They also smooth the skin a bit. They are generally safe for most people and play well when combined in any given product.
Yes potency and purity of active is the key. I have non-sensitive skin and have found many over the counter products with niacinamides are weak. Im tired of wasting $. Im focusing on working with my derm on prescription strength
Hi, how do you incorporate light therapy while using tretinoin? I was told red light therapy should not be used in combination with tretinoin treatment. 🤷🏻♀️
Thanks for the note! Just like with any other ingredient, there is always a chance of a reaction. But generally speaking, it is safe to combine Tretinoin and LED therapy. I usually use my LED device at night before my skincare regimen.
Desi did you see that Auteur reformulated the toner to include vitamin c ? I’m disappointed they added vitamin c to their formulation as I prefer products without it. I just don’t enjoy using it. Your thoughts ?
It’s not Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid), they included Citric acid which is an AHA. Citric Acid has a large molecule so it doesn’t really penetrate the skin like Ascorbic acid. Not sure if the product needed this ingredient but I’ll have to test it first to form a complete opinion. Good point though!! Thanks for mentioning! 🌷💛
@@desistark VERY interesting! I changed to Chebula from Vitamin C serums based on your recommendations. Getting fewer dark spots from the sun without any doubt. Loving the Auteur Lifting Toner so please keep us posted about the Citric acid. I'm not wanting to discontinue using. One other thought. I'm preferring Auteur over every other skincare brand lately but MBR's Skin Lightening Serum has been a game changer for me in terms of hyperpigmentation. I've tried a lot of others including Calecim but MBR has been more effective. In case others might want to give it a try. I might also try the Iribiol on cheeks only after seeing your video. Loved how your conversation about pores widened my aperture. We can evidently think some other issues are pore-related when they're not. Also I'm wanting to try Auteur Renewal Cream but I'm also waiting to see if you review and compare it to your favorite Auteur Density Cream. I'm using both Auteur Restoration Cream and MBR Extraordinary Cream and yet I think Density Cream might be even better for benefits beyond moisturizing in a single cream. Sounds like a lot -- but I'm actually using fewer products now than I was before I started watching your videos approx three years ago! Fewer products with better results. Thanks, thanks, thanks!
I have been using Naturium Alpha Arbutin serum 2% as part of my night regimen. I've also been using it on some dark spots on my arms, but they're fading at a very slow rate. Thank you for sharing this. I'll be trying it.
Hello, beautiful. First and foremost, I would like to express how much I enjoy your content. I live in the United Kingdom, and we cannot buy Maelove products here. Could you please make a video about any great affordable peptides that are available here? I also purchased Dr. Rajani's LED mask from the United States, and my melasma and hyperpigmentation have worsened. I recently heard that LED masks are not good for people of colour, but I would like to hear it from an expert. Do you have any information, suggestions, or advice on this?
Hi! Thank you so much for the note and I appreciate you watching! 💛 There isn’t enough data to support that LED therapy is less or more beneficial for deeper skin tones. Some data suggests that deeper skin tones are more reactive to heat which to some extent LED therapy delivers but nothing conclusive. On its own, LED therapy is definitely not going to remove hyperpigmentation, melasma, etc. so if you’re noticing an adverse reaction, probably best to stop usage. Just go with old fashion retinol and niacinamide. 😄 I’ll do some more research on what’s available in Europe in affordable skincare as I’m not quite sure why Maelove doesn’t deliver there. I’ll send a note to inquire as it is the best inexpensive brand I’ve discovered so far. Either way, I’m sure I’ll find something just as good. 🌷🌷🌷💛💛💛
Hi Desi! Another informative video!!! This topic is very personal for me because I have hyperpigmentation and melasma. I am 48. I had melasma with my pregnancies and it went away. But it suddenly came back about three years ago. If I don’t wear foundation, you can see it. It’s definitely frustrating and just one ingredient will not help it. Since discovering your channel, I have subscribed to Curology. The tretinoin and niacinamide helps. I also use a toner with licorice extract, and many tyronase inhibitors. Recently, I started using Maelove’s fade away brightening serum which has licorice root extract, kojic acid, and alpha arbutin. I really love it and it is not expensive. I’ve also incorporated peptides and growth factors in my skincare routine. I think all of this has helped my melasma. Unfortunately, I don’t think it will completely go away, but I just try to have a very good skincare routine. LED lights make my melasma worse😞 Anyway. Thanks again for everything you do. I really appreciate the fact that you are not sponsored and that you use your channel to help others not only with beauty advice but by donating the proceeds from your channel to charity! 💕
Hi Desi have you tried other forms of vit c not are not l ascorbic acid? Also I use tretinoin at night. Was wondering how I could integrate remedy which already has retinol in it?
hi Desi! i have been using an 8% mandelic in the morning. If i purchased the Remedy, would it still be ok to use the mandelic in the AM and then the remedy pm? since mandelic isn't exfoliating?
You may be able to use Mandelic Acid twice a day especially since you’ve been using it for a while. But the Remedy provides a sufficient dosage and the morning application may become unnecessary.
There is good Kbeauty skincare, yes. It’s not the skincare that makes people of Asian descent have flawless and younger looking skin though. It’s genetics. The rate of melanin production differs with skin tone. Good question though! 🌷💛
I had to stop red light treatment. My spots came back after 2 uses. Then I did the Green light supposedly for pigment made is bad also. Bummed I can not use my mask. I think some skins especially olive skin like me just can not use these lights. They work on really fair skin. Color Science Flex Sunscreen and a hat are my best remedy.
LED alone will not help and yes, in rare cases may make it worse. Question: did you apply the mask on dry, cleansed skin? Morning or evening? Were you using any products with Vitamin C? Just trying to figure out if anything else could be the culprit…thank you!! 💛💛
Dear Desi, I absolutely love your videos, I have learned from you so so much! I have looked up the chebula serum you mentioned and I just wanted you to know that one of the ingredients in this serum is Neroli - it's an essential oil that is considered phototoxic and will cause your skin to be photosensitive over a certain concentration, so you might want to be weary of using this serum in the morning. All the best. Thank you for your wealth of knowlage, yours, Anna Donia
Dear Desi, I am looking further into the Chebula active serum. May I asked for your advice? I noticed one of the ingredients inside this serum is hyaluronic acid. ( I Do not have hyaluronic acid in any of my other skin care and have never used it before). I understand that you need to use hyaluronic acid carefully - i.e directly over wet skin followed by an occlusive to prevent dehydration of the skin. Can you tell me the correct way to incorporate this serum into my routine? My regimen right now is: Lavender hydrosol mist Then a lightweight mineral gel-cream. Lastly - a thicker healing cream-ointment. (Or sunscreen in the morning). Where would you place this chebula serum? Directly after mist and before gel? Or can I apply it after the gel and before the ointment? Many thanks ❤ AnnaDonia
Hi Anna, Anytime for advice! 🌷 HA doesn’t have to be placed on wet skin but you do need to use a moisturizer on top. In your routine, apply after the mist but before your cream.
Thanks for all the info! I have a prescription for tretinoin, but I am not sure my dermatologist will prescribe niacinamide. If she won't, do you have an over the counter niacinamide you could recommend, or are they all useless?
In some cases it may although the study shows otherwise. I have received a few comments especially if you have a deeper skin tone. So please, be careful or just skip it. 🌷
I bought that remedy brand and I used it for about 6 weeks on my dark spots on my hand and did not see any changes not sure if I'm doing it right are you supposed to just put it on the dark spots or are you supposed to put it on the whole entire hand on the top how many times a day just never really knew exactly how many times a day you're supposed to use it how long does it usually take to see results for something with a dark spot remover
Hi! I’m not certain that this product is designed for the hands but it should work based on the same principle. First we want to make sure that the spots on your hands are in fact sun spots. If they are, you should apply the product (top of hands all surface) only at night as it contains retinol. Apply moisturizer on top (preferably before you go to bed so you don’t wash your hands after). Also, a must is sunscreen daily reapplied every 2-3 hours or after you wash your hands. Otherwise it defies the purpose as the sun will continue if not make the spots worse. 🌷
Yes, unfortunately I hear that a lot. As I mentioned in the video, quality grade is more important than concentration when it comes to Niacinamide and ingredients are not all the same. What brand is your product from? Also, are you combining with a retinoid?
I listened twice through but didn’t get if you had mentioned that the curology formula you use is the prescription niaciamide you use or if you use a separate prescription niacoamide. Ok actually I heard you said you use a separste one, why not just rely on the one from curology?
When you start with Curology the formula is Tret 0.01% and Nia 2% (minimal dosage). I was on this for over year and it wasn’t doing anything until I got a separate Nia at 4% + Retinol. Now, 3-4 years later, I use Curology only as I’ve increased my % Tret. They have pre-set formulas that are proportionally increased with time.
Hi Desi-I think it would be helpful to provide your audience with affordable options that are also good quality. I use the ordinary niacinamide 10%, 1% zinc. It's only $8 & is great. I also think providing more details about the masks would be helpful--irradiance, number of bulbs, difference between red and nir light & other specs. Also, there are red light panels, which are actually much more effective than a mask. Hooga is a terrific company, great quality & prices are affordable. The masks are overrated and overpriced esp Dennis Gross. I use HQ (hydroquinone) but you need to be very careful with it. You can onmy use it for 8-12 weeks and when you are not on it you need to use something else like azelaic acid. I have sun spots & freckles and aome wil just not go away. I am very careful with sunscreen, wear a wide brim hat & use other products to help with the HP (along with peels) but it is very difficult. I will never have sunspot free skin like you have. You're very lucky your HP faded. Thank you for the info here
Hm, forgive my ignorance but can somebody please explain - why 4% niacin amide (by prescription) if there're so many 10% serums (Paula's Choice comes to mind) available without any prescription? Isn't 10% more effective than 4%?
It’s the purity grade of ingredients. Ingredients are not sourced the same. Also, Nia products OTC are formulated to include other ingredients which may deem Nia less effective and thus diminish the concentration.
@@desistark What is the actual name of this Rx Niacinamide 4%? Nicomide T cream? I have been searching but nothing is coming up. Did you fill at a local pharmacy? I already use Retin A. I have tried various OTC Niacinamide but most are 10%, but 3-5% is best.
Rx is an abbreviation for prescription. You will need one by an MD. Mine prescribed Niacinamide + Azelaic acid and it can be filled at a pharmacy. There are also online services that provide prescriptions like Musely, Nurx, etc.
I just realized that vitamin C is the cause of the new brown blotches on my face. I began using products from a newish dermatologist trending line targeting hyperpigmentation. They contain vitamin C, and soon after that, I noticed large brown blotches. Oh my, that's crazy. It makes sense. And I want to point out that I have very fair skin, and it still happened to me. Thank you for calling that out.
Please don't tell me we are talking about the SAME thing? Is it Dr. Idris purple line w syringe? No lie I just woke up his morning and noticed what one would call 'malasma?' on the sides of eyes and cheek. And I've been using her products for 1 month now. And originally started to use it for 'prevention' wth
It is acceptable to refer to Retinoids in a specific formula as 1% as long as the other ingredients in the equation are equitably converted. There are very few variables and the designation of 1% is intentional to prevent confusion with a lower number. The presumption is easier to deduce. Easier for most people…

Oh please don’t, I already spend too much time online
Hello, beautiful. First and foremost, I would like to express how much I enjoy your content. I live in the United Kingdom, and we cannot buy Maelove products here. Could you please make a video about any great affordable peptides that are available here? I also purchased Dr. Rajani's LED mask from the United States, and my melasma and hyperpigmentation have worsened. I recently heard that LED masks are not good for people of colour, but I would like to hear it from an expert. Do you have any information, suggestions, or advice on this?
Hi! Thank you so much for the note and I appreciate you watching! 💛
There isn’t enough data to support that LED therapy is less or more beneficial for deeper skin tones.
I’ll do some more research on what’s available in Europe in affordable skincare as I’m not quite sure why Maelove doesn’t deliver there. I’ll send a note to inquire as it is the best inexpensive brand I’ve discovered so far. Either way, I’m sure I’ll find something just as good.

@@desistark You're a star! Thank you 😊

What do you think of mandelic acid 8 percent and skin better even tone for hyperpigmentation?
It may lighten dark spots. You can add Niacinamide. That would be a great combo.
Hi Desi have you tried other forms of vit c not are not l ascorbic acid? Also I use tretinoin at night. Was wondering how I could integrate remedy which already has retinol in it?
Hi! Yes, I have. The antioxidant properties are not equal in a non Ascorbic acid product. Either way, I find that Vit C is not the best for me.
hi Desi! i have been using an 8% mandelic in the morning.
@@desistark thank you so much! you are so helpful
Would you recommend Korean skin care products for face pigmentation? A lot of people talk about Koreans having the best flawless skin.
There is good Kbeauty skincare, yes. It’s not the skincare that makes people of Asian descent have flawless and younger looking skin though. It’s genetics. The rate of melanin production differs with skin tone.
Good question though!

@@desistark that's interesting.. thanks for sharing 🙏
Is there a link to the $38 product?
All links are in Description Box below the video. But here it is: go.shopmy.us/p-6882272
Thank you for this video. I have tried using red light Omnilux mask but my hyperpigmentation seems to get worse.
@@leelastoma5809 Yeah I’m bummed about not being able to use my mask as well. I use the same sunscreen.
LED alone will not help and yes, in rare cases may make it worse. Question: did you apply the mask on dry, cleansed skin? Morning or evening? Were you using any products with Vitamin C? Just trying to figure out if anything else could be the culprit…thank you!! 💛💛
@@desistark I used it in the morning after washing my face. I use several Tyrosinase Inhibitors, not vitamin c. I just started using Chebula serum.
Dear Desi,
I absolutely love your videos, I have learned from you so so much!
🌷💛
Dear Desi,
I am looking further into the Chebula active serum.
My regimen right now is:
Lavender hydrosol mist
Then a lightweight mineral gel-cream.
Lastly - a thicker healing cream-ointment. (Or sunscreen in the morning).
Where would you place this chebula serum?
Directly after mist and before gel? Or can I apply it after the gel and before the ointment?
Many thanks ❤ AnnaDonia
Hi Anna,
Anytime for advice! 🌷
HA doesn’t have to be placed on wet skin but you do need to use a moisturizer on top. In your routine, apply after the mist but before your cream.
Thank you my dear ❤
Thanks for all the info! I have a prescription for tretinoin, but I am not sure my dermatologist will prescribe niacinamide. If she won't, do you have an over the counter niacinamide you could recommend, or are they all useless?
Hi! The only one that Id recommend is Maelove Nia10 go.shopmy.us/p-6773508
It’s a simple Niacinamide product without any other ingredients. 🌷
Isn’t red light therapy going to aggravate melasma?
In some cases it may although the study shows otherwise. I have received a few comments especially if you have a deeper skin tone. So please, be careful or just skip it. 🌷
Close NIR. Use only red light
How old are you? Really important to know considering your contents.
48. It’s mentioned quite often in other videos.
i have 10% niacinamide and it haent done anything with my dark spots doc :( should i switch to 4%
Yes, unfortunately I hear that a lot.
Did you not see the beginning of the video? It addresses these questions very clearly. Please, let me know if further explanation is required. 🌷
I think she is saying that less is more when it comes to the concentration. Stronger doesn’t mean more effective.
Estrogen helps keep the spots away. HRT
I am saying I got dark spots on side of face after I started using the product.
If that’s the only thing you’ve changed in your routine, yes, it is most probably what’s causing the issue.
You look much younger without makeup. So do I. I think once any woman hits 35 ish makup is aging. It makes us look older.
That’s very true. 🌷
You know youre rich when you have 2 pair of the exaxt same Louboutin pumps.
😂😂😂They are all slightly different. But you’re right; not by much. I’m in Finance. Boring shoes are a mandate.
Remedy is only .1% retinol, not 1%.
It is acceptable to refer to Retinoids in a specific formula as 1% as long as the other ingredients in the equation are equitably converted. There are very few variables and the designation of 1% is intentional to prevent confusion with a lower number. The presumption is easier to deduce. Easier for most people…
Hi Desi, You are so good in explaining everything..💗
