I am scrap happy all the time. I'm quite surprised Beth, that you have not done a scrap quilt previously. It was a pleasure to watch you work.
For those who might want some extra help as beginners, here are my top tips I used recently with a bag of donated scraps.
    Sort by shape first.
Anything not quite like a square, or a long rectangular shape, gets put aside for dealing with separately.
Sort by width next. Ignore colour and pattern until later.
Make a pile of square like items into dark and light.
Combining a dark and light piece into a 2 patch almost always ensures some balance.
I made long strings of 2 patches into 4 then 8 etc.
I next added strings together to go across the width I wanted to cover.
The other version is to take a piece of paper that is the size you want to aim for and keep joining until you get slightly bigger than the paper square, then trim to suit it.
Bigger widths work better on the outside of squares because they are easier to join. So aim for a wider piece so that even after trimming it will show on the outside and reduce bulk when joining to the next item.
If you are comfortable with seeing my comments and tips please let me know, as I love the world of sewing and the quilting community is so awesome.

I LOVE crumb piecing!! I do it when I just need to quilt but dont have a project. Or when im burnt out and need something mindless. I dont worry about what shape they are. I usually dont even worry if they "go together". I just sew straight sides together. If a side gets to wonky, I trim it straight. When I get around 8ish inches, I cut a 6.5 square from it. Then the trim offs become the start of the next piece. When I have enough squares, I add sashing and voila!
I have so much fun doing this! If its going to a child, I will even make an eye spy list to go with it. 😊

Yes Its addictive! I make my squares Big 12” and sew together. Because of all the seams, I tie them, making the quilt even more scrappy❤(KH)

    • @trinam2503
      @trinam2503 2 года назад +2

@@davidhatfield5714 ooo! I havent tied one yet! I bet that it's beautiful!!! The batting I use doesnt lend itsself to tying. But I might pick up some poly batting so that i can do one that day 😊
I have quite a stack ready for a quilt. My friend loves scrappy quilts, but can't bring herself to make them. So im making her one for cmas. Im alternating the scrappy blocks w her favorite themes, then doing simple corner to corner straight line quilting.

I enjoy using up scraps this way. I typically use a "log cabin" technique, starting in the middle and working around and out. When I get to about 10 inches ( sometimes larger) I trim and set aside. I've used the squares for bag fronts, quilt square swaps, potholders, hot pads...
Lately I found I don't have the mental energy to cut and piece a quilt top. It's very sad, since I have some nice projects waiting for me. But I do have the energy to sit and make a small tidbit.

During 20/21 lockdown, I saw about crumb quilting but didn’t have a scrap of fabric, so went on line and bought lots of scrap packs etc, then started making lots of squares, just kept on going, till eventually I thought I’d better see how many I had… it turned out to become a king size bed quilt… The hardest part was doing the batting and backing fabric it was so big, and all done on my small kitchen table… love from London uk 🇬🇧

This is such a good idea, when one runs into roadblocks w/quilt making or attempting to sew a sundress with shirring (and, on an industrial machine it's not as easy as it was on Mom's Singer) and feeling totally frustrated but needing something to calm the frustration, sewing up crumb blocks is a great idea!
It's amazing how just sewing bits and pieces together can sooth the storm and create beautiful blocks for future projects! Great idea!
    Thanks, Beth!

Beth, Good morning from NY! I love starting my day with a video you’ve put together. It doesn’t matter if it’s something I’m interested in or not. If you don’t have a new one up, I’ll go back to an old one, I always start my day with Beth! You’re laid back presentation and melodic voice soothes me and is like stretching before a marathon. I crumb quilt every morning, but then give my blocks to my quilting students to do with as they please, because, while it’s a good and freeing sewing activity, it is unpleasing to my eye and sense of organization. I’m more a “matchy matchy” kinda sewist. However, I do sew for Project Linus and as I look at your final picture of a finished crumb quilt, I’m thinking, hmmmm, maybe I’ve finally found a worthy project for the kids! Wondering, can I ask my students for the blocks back?!? 🤣 🥴 😂 Thank you for all the work you put in to your channel and the frequency with which you post! I love, love, love your channel❣️

I love crumb quilts- I’ve been building crumbs ( even tiny crumbs) for almost 3 years- it’s growing and is getting pretty larger. I never realized how much pink I actually use, until now! Maybe by the end of the year I will have a full size quilt of just crumbs!
An older gentleman who was here for a visit, saw my crumb project in my sewing room and mentioned that when he was growing up, most people had crumb quilts- they never let anything go to the trash- they didn’t call it “crumb” they just called it- bedding- a coat, britches, window covers, table cover etc-- I call it “bits and bobs”- never the less it is beautiful to see all of the tiny colors - 1/2 inch to 1 inch-

Wow Beth, These scrappy blocks are really beautiful. I love all the different colors and shapes together. I adore the solid sashing with a pretty corner stone in it, because it gives a place for the eye to rest. I have not seen the addition of sashing to a crumb quilt before. I absolutely love the results. I have tried to make a crumb quilt. I didn’t like what I came up with so i think I threw some of it away. That surprised me to as I have seen some other crumb quilts and really liked them. I wasn’t able to figure out why/what was wrong with mine. I’m about to have eye surgery and maybe that is part of the problem, as I am not seeing like I used too. If I attempt to work on crumb quilting again, if you don’t mind, I would love to follow suit with the sashing and corner stone like you have done. It’s truly beautiful. Thank you very much for sharing, 👍💖🥰 Chris

I’m like you, I can’t throw my crumbs away! It’s always fun to do some mindless sewing between projects. I have a room full of fabric and I get the most enjoyment playing with the scraps and crumbs. The sashing is almost a requirement to give the eye a rest. Thanks for sharing!

    I REALLY like crumb quilts!
I have gathered quite a stash by always grabbing up any scraps at whatever event I may attend.
My personal choice of fabrics is fairly eclectic, but always dark and bold.
Having others' scraps, my blocks have a life of their own.
I love quilt stores that sell grab bags of scraps - - so much scrapping, and so many ideas.
Watching your videos encourages me in my chosen reason for quilting - - to bring color and odds and ends to a useful destination.

I always enjoy watching people see with scraps especially crumbs but you seem to put more thought into the process and the results, I think, are worth the time. 😍

Love that you use tiny "crumbs." I have many of these, thought if they were worth keeping but each piece has value. Thank you for sharing.

I love the randomness of this method. It looks so happy and colourful. Will do one of these for sure.

My brain was starting to get very confused when you start sewing the four squares together and then there’s that middle section joining the other hat Omgosh, but it’s so easy, and oh, you are amazing and the video is so nice and slow said that it can be understood without pulling my hair out!! Lol. thank you so much.

I love this quilt block. So pretty and creative. When all the blocks and sashing were together is really pretty. Now I know what to do with all those little pieces of fabric. Thx Beth
